Yeah ! This just didn't work for me. It started pretty interesting. We get to meet Clara who works as a psychologist at day and stripper at night. Intriguing eh ?

So, we see that she really enjoys all the attention, the power she has over the men-folk fawning all over her when she gives them lap dances. Enter Lucas. He's being a little secretive. He's been eyeing her all this time and when she asks him if he would be interested in a lap dance, he accepts. Right! So, now Zefy aka Clara is giving Lucas a lap dance of his lifetime and?? She's hot and horny.. not that he isn't. But apparently there's something about him that makes her crazy. Yah, I didn't feel this part. And guess what.. soon they are in a somewhat relationship (which obviously means she's fallen in love) !! And when it doesn't work out, to keep emotions out of her relations she chooses a sugar daddy..

What Really ?? Can she even be a psychologist ?? She has unresolved issues !!

In the middle of all this, we get to read some guy called Aaron's depressing notes, about how he is obsessed with Dr.Black, how lonely he is and how there is nothing more in life for him. While reading the notes, you get a sense that the man is on the edge of suicide. I had initially thought this would be an amazing twist to the plot. But it ended on such a flat note.

I mean, I understand why Clara wanted to be in control and wanted all the attention, but I didn't like how the story proceeded. I didn't like that Clara gets often attracted to her night job clients, which she vehemently denies. Don't take me wrong, I have tried to be considerate of Clara's dark inevitable side, but something between Lucas and Clara didn't seem right to me. Even their love scenes seemed very unemotional to me. But maybe that's just me. But I didn't feel their chemistry.

So, the plot in this book was pretty good, but there was no synergy or chemistry between the characters. They were all marred by lies and omissions, and even if I accept this to be a part of the story, everything seemed to be happy happy in the end. I didn't see these people working or getting a closure on their issues. Somehow, it felt very rushed and incomplete.

Every book has a purpose, to affect the readers to bring out emotions. And this one didn't do that for me.

Thank you NetGalley and Kaleido Text Media for generously providing me the ARC in exchange of my honest review.

Close was a compelling story that really hooked me in with the suspense element that was entwined throughout the story. I enjoyed the storyline of the story and found that it wasn’t similar to anything I have previously read before, making it that much more interesting. I found once I started I couldn’t put it down.

I really enjoyed Clara and the way that she went for the things that she wanted in life and she didn’t care what she had to do to get them.

I enjoyed Lucas very much in the story and I enjoyed the way that he was immediately attracted to Clara. I found Lucas to be highly charismatic and charming throughout the story making him that much more enjoyable to read about.

Close is about two people who are completely different to each other being drawn to each other by the attraction they both feel for each other.

I really enjoyed the two characters in the story and the way that they both don’t know a lot of love and reading how they muddle through their feelings for each other. I enjoy this psychological romance story that many twists and turns throughout it.

My first read by this author and what a great introduction.
Suspenseful, and sultry, this a story of going after the truth despite the odds. The plot was intriguing and the story of Clara and Lucas prove that things are not what they appear.
She's a therapist by day and a stripper at night.
Frankly, that seemed like a stretch, but Clara was inventive in how to keep her lives separate. Lucas is a wealthy entrepreneur, seeking answers to his brother's mysterious circumstances, no matter what the cost.
Their insta-connection was crazy hot and sometimes just plain crazy. Theirs was a sexually charged and volatile relation that kept me wondering whether or not I liked them together. Suspicions and misinformation kept things interesting throughout the story.
The story unfolded slowly with enough unexpected twists and turns that kept me wondering WTF was going on.

6 dark stars- WOW- How simply intriguing, twisted, dark, romantic, and suspenseful this book was. This book takes you deep into the mind and makes you question the intense scenes that you just read. The entire premise of this book was so fascinating to me as someone that has a degree in Psychology. If I was so inclined a job as a stripper would be something that I would find fascinating to explore. The character development and the attraction between the two main characters was so intense and so obvious even when they were trying to fight it. Thank you for allowing me a chance to read this book by a newly discovered author and letting me write about it honestly.

What a compelling and gripping contemporary read. I was thoroughly drawn to the observation of the human psyche that was written flawlessly in this dark yet twisted romance. This was my first book of Fen Wilde’s and I definitely wasn’t disappointed.

How do you conquer your fears of love, taking that chance, feeling desirable or good enough in your other halves eye? Well, that’s what Clara Black goes through with her emotions against seductive businessman Lucas Evans. His highly charismatic, charming and very clever but when it comes to knowing love, both are very insecure and secretive.

Drawn together by their sex-charged imaginations they start on a journey of discovery, seduction and lies. I absolutely loved this journey and what seems to be unfolding is a psychological roller coaster.

I liked this romance :) It had a lot going for it. It was smart, sexy, and a little dark. I liked the therapist character as well. Sometimes they're written completely wrong and it frustrates me. I do think it could do with a few tweaks, but overall solid story.

I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily reviewing.

This book is definitely a psychoanalytic thriller...you are kept guessing the entire book. The beginning is slightly confusing trying to figure it out but it is worth it once the story starts to come together!

The chemistry and sexual attraction are on point and heats of an already thrilling storyline!

This review is short and sweet because you need to figure it out for yourself...so just delve into your dark side and take a risk!

"I received the ARC in exchange for a honest review.

In the beginning of this book, I didn’t quite understand it. I felt like it was all over the place. That’s the reason for the four stars. But as I continued on, things became a bit clearer. I actually ended up enjoying the story more than I thought. I didn’t like that Lucas kept jumping to conclusions but I really loved Clara. She came full circle. Overall, great story! "

Wow! I could not put this one down. One of the best-written books I've read recently. Not exactly your typical romance, the unusual leads, situation, and writing style made this book stand out. The author's background in psychology helps ground the story and make Clara's work as a psychologist seem realistic.

So far, this is the best fiction I've read in 2018, and even though it's early in the year, I'm predicting it'll be in my top 10 at the end of it.

Eagerly looking forward to the author's next release!

Fen Wilde has brilliant insight into the human mind and the ways people construct walls and break them down to accept love. Close is a tantalizing exploration of the human psyche and overcoming obstacles to find that elusive perfect match.

Close by Fen Wilde

I am voluntarily reviewing this ARC.

Close is a compelling book. For me, this was a psychological sort of romance. It was dark and gritty. Some of it was very hard for me to read. I hate cheating in a story most of the time, and in this story, there were moments that I was yelling, out loud at some d/ bag move. The story felt believable and real. It was deep and reflective. I feel very conflicted about whether I loved this book or hated it. I guess there were parts that made me mad, but I also loved it.

Great read, and surprisingly relatable!

I have never left a review on a book EVER until now. Only because it spoke to me like a punch to the stomach I didn't see coming. I wasn't expecting it, but the themes and Clara's thoughts and beliefs were almost like they were my own, it was scary. And the author also offered so many great insights about things I'm working on in my own mind. I was not expecting that and I'm pleasantly surprised. Definitely a great read. And the steamy scenes were certainly hooooottt. Can't wait to read more by this author!

One of the things that surprised me about this book was how deep into the human psyche this book seemed willing to dive. Each and every one of these characters was deeply flawed, each without their own reasoning and beliefs. After finding out the author is a mental health clinician, I now understand why she decided to pursue it to the levels that she did. This story certainly forces you to take a step back and reevaluate some of the people you may encounter on a regular basis. One line that really stands out to me from this story is told from Clara's point of view. She thinks,

**** How hard that is for some of us. To believe that we are worthy, just as we are. That our need's are just as valid as the next person's. And the opposite of that: the things that we'll do to feel lovable. The masks we'll wear to convince others, as well as ourselves. ****

It was moments such as that that were just so utterly raw and human that kept me reading. That exploration of the lengths and depths some people are willing to go to just to feel worthy.

And then, for me at least, it just started coming unraveled. Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that no matter how much back and forth there was between Clara and Lucas it always seemed to go the same way. One of them would say or do something to anger or upset the other. They would argue and one would walk away. A few days later one of them (usually Lucas) would come back. One or both would begin to apologize. They would have sex. And nothing would change. Sometimes after the sex a different problem would rear its head and send them running away from each other again. I'm sorry, but when you write a book as deep as this one, it deserves better. Even if the characters are using sex as a quick fix, there needs to be as much depth to their relationship with each other as there is their feelings towards themselves.

Then there was the side-story of Aaron. Which to me both helped and hurt this novel. When he was an unknown element, it added a layer of mystery. When his identity was revealed, there was some shock value to it. And then as we neared the end, it seemed the author regretted certain choices and did a complete 180 - leading to confusion and irritation on my part. I felt her story stood enough on its own merit as it was that it did not need that last minute "plot twist".

Based on the four and five star reviews this book has gotten it is obvious that I am in the minority, and that's ok. Books aren't meant to be for everyone . I do think that those who enjoy a darker look at human emotion will enjoy this. And if this author comes across my feed again with a new book and the synopsis catches my eye, I would give her another chance.

DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review. This has not affected my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.

This is one heck of a story. It is fascinating, intriguing, suspenseful and eye opening. This book kept me glued to each page from beginning to the end. There is so much drama, pain, shock, fear, abuse, self-forgiveness and the finding of love of self and of others. There are three major players in this story. Aaron: whose pain filled life is being written about from his journals because his mother, Maureen, told his older brother Lucas, that he was dead. Lucas: he has buried his pain, disappointments, abuse under a façade he shows everyone. He has never had a serious relationship. He hits it and quits it. He has never connected to anyone until Clara. He is a successful businessman. He owns his own security company and has thirty acres prime land in the country that he uses for training horses for competition. He has buyers from all over the world who see the horses during a race. While reading Aaron's journals, he hires a P.I. to track down the therapist that Aaron writes to. He needs to blame someone for what happened to his brother and he wants to blame his therapist, Clara Black. Clara: She is a very interesting character. She is a psychotherapist by day and a successful stripper by night. She had a painful abusive childhood and she never told anyone what was happening during the time that it happened and never told anyone later in her life. She fears intimacy and relationships in general. She keeps her two worlds separated. This book delves into the lives of Aaron, Lucas and Clara and to a small extend Maureen, Aaron and Lucas' mother. It goes into their relationships with each other and their relationship with themselves. This is a must read and I highly recommend it.

‘Close’, by Fen Wilde.

As an ARC reader I received this book for free. I promised an honest review. Here it is.

English is not my first language. Sorry for errors.

Rating: 5 (of 5) stars.

In general: Well written psychological erotic novel.

Main characters:

- Clara Black, stripper and lap dancer in a club by night and psychotherapist by day. After ending her lucrative nightclub career she is - for a short time - a luxury escort.

- Lucas Evans, good looking night club client. Owns a successful security firm and , in the country, a horse training centre. Is fascinated by Clara.

- Aaron Cooper. Lucas’s half-brother. Claimed to be one of Clara’s patients.

Clara and Lucas meet in the nightclub. They are interested in each other, but afraid that falling in love will make a person too vulnerable. But trusting and loving nobody makes a person lonely. So Clara and Lucas - by trial and error - try to trust each other so their relationship can develop.
Aaron has the same dificulties as his brother and writes a diary about his feelings and loneliness. Then he disappears suddenly.
The three main characters had a bad youth that influenced their life when they became adults. Clara, being a psychotherapist, analizes their attitude to life, so they can overcome feelings of uselessness or explain why she’s working in a nightclub or an escort-service.
Fen Wilde does much more than describing hot sex scenes. She gives deeply thought and credible explanations for the behaviour of the main characters. The book is in a style that’s easy to read. And the story has a suspenseful ‘building’. So it’s a page turner.

This novel provides such insight into mental illnesses, trauma, suicide and the effect of child abuse (be it sexual or psychological). The author does a great job weaving the complexities of the mind and the impact left from one's traumatic childhood while also developing romance between the characters with unexpected twists to the plot.
While it was a heavy read with all the complex mental health issues it was also a sweet read about how love conquers all even internal conflicts.

This is a book! I was totally hooked by this semi-dark tale. I don't do spoilers but the characters (so real) the twist (wasn't expecting one) I read in one sitting because I wanted to read what came next. The book was just right at the sex. I recommend this book to all.

Woah just woah! I feel thoroughly psychoanalyzed with every page. I got a great therapy session, and keen insight to alot of mental health disorders. But most of all I was glad that this story was well dramatic, suspenseful, and full of allegory and contradictions. The right mix fiction and facts theoretically speaking. Not everybody's issues are the same, but getting help in anyway is better than doing nothing and sabotaging yourself. It's a process to clarity and revolution. The characters are a mystery, and the author gives you foresight and backstory in the right timeframes and in precise and informative details.
