She’s the one woman I should stay away from, but I can’t help myself...
They say being a billionaire has its perks, but I hardly notice. After being widowed, my beautiful little girl is the most important thing to me. Esme hasn’t spoken to anyone but me since her mother’s death. When she goes missing, I’m thisclose to losing it.
When Esme turns up safe and sound with a cute waitress, I’m ready to give the lady a reward and be on our way, but then Esme speaks to her. It’s simple, a mere “thank you”, but I know I can’t let the waitress get away.
Melanie is nothing like the women who throw themselves at me. Her big brown eyes take my breath away from the minute I lay eyes on her. She fills out her pink waitress uniform with curves I can’t wait to get my hands on. I can’t get her out of my head.
Melanie’s bringing my little girl out of her shell, which means she’s strictly off limits. But having her under my roof and close enough to touch is too much of a temptation. My legendary control is beginning to slip and I don’t know how much longer I can resist breaking every rule I have.
Mr. Control is a HOT romance with heart that will tug at your heartstrings, melt your panties, and leave you begging for more. HEA included! This single dad romance is approximately 62,000 words!
I enjoyed this one for the most part. I thought after reading the synopsis that this was going to be a light, sexy insta-love type read, but it was a rather slow burn with mildly hot sex scenes. So I was a little bummed by the lack of heat, but like I said I still enjoyed it.
The deets...I found it to be well written and well paced. The plot (although a little heavier than I anticipated) was engaging and kept me turning the pages. I wouldn't say I found it to be overly angsty and there was no OW/OM drama. Like I mentioned above it was a pretty slow burn with no sex until 60% and the sex scenes were more on the mild side. There weren't very many secondary characters, but I loved both Esme and Derrick. Both main characters were relatively likable. I quite liked Melanie. I loved her interactions with Esme. She was sweet and had a big heart. Rhys was a bit more complicated for me. I loved how he was with his daughter (Esme), and at times he was charming with Mel. But I felt we were promised a hero with this "darkness" that scared women away and had them signing nondisclosure agreements, but except for losing his temper a couple of times, there was nothing dark about him. I'll be honest with all the talk about his "darkness" and him letting it out and wondering if she would be the woman who could handle it, I was expecting some kink. But no kink, nothing. *shrug*
I also had a couple of other issues that kept me from rating this one higher. There were a few loose ends (the heroines mother for example) that are just kind of left hanging, and the ending was incredibly rushed. From the big fight until the end it felt underdeveloped. Part of the problem is that we don't get enough of Rhys's POV about the aftermath of the big blowup. One minute he is a colossal asshole and the next we I needed a scene where he realizes that he made a HUGE mistake and it has cost him it all. Lastly, there wasn't enough groveling. He should have been crawling over broken glass and begging for forgiveness from both Mel AND Esme.
So a little bit of a mixed bag with this one. Some good. Some that could have better. But overall this one gets a solid thumbs up from yours truly.
Sounded cute, but had to DNF when the poor billionaire threatens to spank the chick he's met twice because she would rather spend the night at a women's shelter than with someone she doesn't know and does creepy things like threatening to spank her.
This is normally an arc that I like: single-dad falls in love with his nanny. The thing is, I felt like this story tried to do too much and yet didn't really go deep enough for me to cheer for the MC's to get their HEA. I felt no connection to either character because at times, they stayed too much in their heads (whining about the same thing over and over again). And I really don't like whiners and characters who are forever like woe-is-me-my-life-sucks-and-no-one-will-ever-love-me.
Then there were the somewhat predictable and convenient plot "problems" that seemed, at least to me, to have been thrown in for the sake of building angst and drama. They made me roll my eyes. Sorry to the fans of this book.
Like what things? Well, let's see:
Furthermore, I wanted scenes where the MC's would banter and flirt with each other. There really wasn't much interaction between them. So for the life of me, I couldn't understand how they fell in love with each other. In lust, I understand but in love?? Nope. Didn't buy it.
Also, why do they even need Derek (the body guard) and a full security detail? It's not even explained. 😕 Can you tell I'm frustrated? Sigh.
Deleting this book and will read an oldie-but-goodie to rekindle my book happiness.
DNF at 50% I was hoping for something deeper and more wholesome but this book is a shallow pool of desperate writing. Heroine is pathetic and can't stop licking her lips around the hero. Hero is a former manwhore who thinks about all the women he's slept with and is stopping himself from "getting the h out of his system by fucking her."
It had potential but it was so shallow. I would've loved this story -it was cliché good and I was surprised because I have enjoyed two books from the author so much one of them is one of my favorite books of this year. So yeah, it was a let down but I will continue reading her books and see what clicks and what doesn't.
This is so up to my alley. (Un)fortunately this review happened. Thank God, because it seems all the drama, cliche possible was thrown in there. And no smexy?? No interaction and too much time in their heads. Big no for me.
Mr. Control isn’t a bad book, it just wasn’t for me. I can see why people would like this kind of writing. I was under the impression this was a smut book, but it’s not, it’s a NA. Anyhow, putting that aside, at the end of the day Maya Hughes writes really descriptively. There are actual CHAPTERS of just inner monologue and descriptive writing. If anyone knows anything about me is that I can’t stand that.
Props to the author for not having a half naked man on the cover, because if she did, I would have been disappointed that there was two mild steamy scenes.
I think with this book I felt like everything but the kitchen sink was thrown into the plot. Too much went on with too much repetitiveness. The Heroine kept on mentioning her abandonment issues and it felt like a broken record.
The idea of the book is good, I just didn’t care for the execution. At the end of the day this author’s writing style isn’t for me.
I know I can be a pretty picky reader, but I swear I'm not at fault here. This had me so extremely bored.
Now, I could've put this on my DNF bookshelf which I almost did after I skipped some pages but I'm just so fucking persistent.
Let me just say somethings: there was no chemistry, whatsoever, between the characters (despite what the author wanted you to believe in); the ending was rushed AF and the plot was so weirdly predictive - my God.
Anyways, this was a bad choice for me, but if you'd like to give it a go
Even though it stared good it quickly go sideways for me. Everything was rushed and I couldn't stand Rhys and him Mel had no chemistry. Only thing I like was Esme and her interaction with Mel.
... i saved 0 quotes because honestly this was just... bad. the characters had no chemistry. no development, the male mc irritated me to no end, the story was all over the place and felt so unnatural... literally the only good thing about this was esme.
In the vein of transparency, I didn't look at the blurb, reviews, or anything associated with this series. I literally picked this book out as I was determined to binge read on this author's entire backlist.
DUDE! I DIDN'T KNOW I WAS MISSING THIS! - Alpha Billionaire who has jerk like tendencies? Check Single Dad? Check HAWT sexy times? Check
Rhys has secrets. And for good reasons, as he wants to protect his family. A darling little girl who scene steals she is in. Mel is looking to stop the cycle she is in and finds an unexpected connection to Esme. Rhys and Mel try to keep this strictly professional but fail spectacularly at keeping their hands off each other.
This book falls in my guilty pleasures romance. Those stories that offer this reader's heart a bit of Cinderella with a perfect alpha male who is flawed. If you enjoy alpha-holes from W. Winters, LJ Shen but looking for something not so dark and twisted like me, you'll get your happy romance heart binge on with this series.
Now, off to book 2 with a potentially even bigger flawed hero *swoon*
I did enjoy this one, but I feel like the author just needs to flush out her scenes more. There were times where it felt like I was coming in mid-scene and like I’d missed something. I’ll definitely try something else from this author though.
Rhys and Mel really captivated me with this slow burn romance. Right from the blurb, I knew I'd like this book since I'm such a sucker for single dads. I loved Mel and how strong she was in a life where she was always waiting for the other shoe to drop. I loved Rhys' protectiveness and love for his daughter Esme. Esme who you just can't help fall in love with when she's able to make a big strong man have tea parties while wearing colorful boas.
This is more than just a nanny and Billionaire romance. I loved the storyline of two people who share a bad past, each in their own way, and become better with the other in their lives. Most of all I really loved the message behind Rhys, Mel, and Esme's story. Mr Control touches on the problems of how broken our system can be that kids fall through the cracks when it comes to child services. It breaks my heart to hear of cases like Mel's happen in real life. Really made me think more on my foster goal.
Mr Control is a standalone with its own HEA and even extended epilogue. As much as I did love the storyline and message behind it, my expectations did fall a little short. I was left with alot of questions regarding most of the other characters in the story. While I do love an extended epilogue because I'm just nosey when it comes to characters, I think it should have been labeled more of a deleted scene instead. I really truly enjoyed it nonetheless.
I'm sorry. I couldn't do it. That's manipulation. That's gaslighting. That's inciting terror. If they fall in love (which they will because this is a romance novel), I won't be able to forgive this initial behavior. Rhys does not seem to be a good person at all. And I'm not sure how I feel about Melanie right now, but if she ends up falling in love with him, I won't like her much then either. It's best to stop now.
The writing style is pretty weak. At the end of the chapter there is always a really abrupt line that does not transition very well into the next chapter. I wasn't overjoyed at the other Maya Hughes' book I read yesterday, The Proposal, but it was all right enough that I thought I might like a different book by her. Sadly this turned out to be a disappointment. I'm not sure if Maya Hughes is the author for me.
It was my first book by this author and it was really good.
Some things were unanswered, but it was ok.
Mel and Rhys are world's apart, but they are brought together by adorable Esme, Rhys's daughter. All the three of them had some dark parts in their pasts, but together they start to let that go to start new memories, new love, new family.
Mel, actually, starts as the nanny. But being together and loving the same little girl made closer and closer, even if they try to avoid it. And they realize, their feelings are all over the place, but the world outside wont give them a break.
When they least expect it, their love and their new family are in jeopardy. Good thing is that their love will break everything ahead of them and put the world down if needed.
I guess some things are better when they are out of control.
Blurb: She’s the one woman I should stay away from, but I can’t help myself...

I'm giving it three stars because it did suck me in but this book needs some serious editing. The male protagonist controlling ways gives a very Christian Grey vibe to him.
Dnf this book was just weird. I felt no connection between the characters, and found them both to be very bland. Aside from that H weird insta obsession and someone saw her as his saviour and insta falling in love with her emotionally made me stop reading. It was so over the top and cringey that he basically states he wants to spend the rest of his life with her after interacting with her for like less than 2 hours.
When it came to the Manhattan Misters I did it all in the wrong way. What I mean is that I first read Mr. Ruin and then Mr. Control. It's ok, though since they're standalones!
Back to the book, I don't think there was something I didn't enjoy, and it's surprising considering that Rhys is not all that brooding (that I usually go for), and Mel is more feisty than I thought it would be possible. But the thing is that I found their combination explosive and sexy!
Rhys' little daughter, Esme, really melted my heart. And ok who actually cares about my heart. The thing is that he managed to have Mel, a seemingly unsuitable and far from being a motherly person, lower all her guards.
3.85 Stars I Voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book
To the world Rhys was a billionaire who had everything he wanted, I mean he was giving money away all the time to different charities. But Rhys has a secret that nobody knows and he can't let anyone find out. He is a widower raising his daughter who hasn't said a word since her mother died. She only speaks to him. But then she meets Melanie. And for some reason Esme has connected to Melanie, and now Rhys will do anything to have Melanie come work for him
Melanie has not had an easy life and she doesn't expect things to work out for her ever. Her dad ran off and her mother was a junkie who would do anything to ruin her life. So when she sees Esme offering to help her she does everything she can to protect his little girl. And when Rhys offers her a job she declines because she isn't a nanny and what does she know about kids. But from the moment she met Esme she knew they had a connection. And her life was falling apart, so she didn't actually have another way out. So she accepts his offer. And she can't deny the attraction she has to Rhys either.
And even though Rhys tells himself to stay away from Melanie he can't help but want to be with her. But at the first sign of trouble he assumes the worst of her. And from there it just goes downhill. Can Melanie forgive him for thinking that she is betraying him and how can Rhys trust her when he can't trust anyone but himself.
A sweet, little drama romance that will keep you entertained. Felt that the ending was a bit rushed and that some questions were left hanging for me. And for some reason I think that Rhys didn't live up to his 'dark hero persona'. But all in all a good read
Melanie's life has been one struggle after another. Her mother is a druggie that just takes from her. Her friend believes her nasty boyfriend instead of Melanie and throws her out for something she didn't even do. So when a little girl offers her hankie to fix Melanie's boo boo she doesn't know what to think. Not seeing a parents searching for her she takes her back to the diner where she works until they can find her parents. Rhys is frantic when he learns his daughter is missing and is angry when he finds her thinking someone is trying to scam money from him. Melanie can't believe he sends a nondisclosure agreement for her to sign but signs it any way. Esme won't stop talking about Melanie so Rhys has the idea to hire her to look after his daughter. When he learns Melanie is basically homeless he refuses to take no for an answer. Melanie and Esme hit it off and Rhys is even surprised by the change in his daughter. The attraction both Rhys and Melanie have been fighting heats up to where they give in and have sex. With the trust issues both of them have will they be able to make their relationship something permanent?
I loved this book its was well written and an amazing story. The chemistry between the characters just about melted my kindle it was so hot. If you haven't picked up this book yet you really should its a must read.
I received a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.
This story was good but not great. I really felt like this had great potential. But what really set me apart from loving it was the way the hero was. One minute he was sweet and understanding, the next he was going off on the heroine for one thing or another because of HIS trust issues. I didn't really feel he apologized to her and made her really feel how...sorry he was for jumping down her throat for stuff that another person did, to set her up. And it bugged me that the heroine didn't really tell him how hurt or angry she was over his actions. I think she forgave him WAY to quickly.
I really liked the plot. It has AMAZING potential. I liked that the heroine was down on her luck and the idea of having a sexy billionaire come swooping in to save her and give her an amazing job with great pay made me want to swoon. But the trust issues that our hero had going was a real turn off for me.
I give Mr. Control TWO STARS! I think if the hero had less anger and jealousy and trust issues this story could EASILY have been a four or five stars. I still think its worth giving a read though because there were parts that were pretty good and the sex...DEFINITELY worth it!
Quick Info Standalone/Cliffhanger?: Standalone Part of a Series?: Yes ---------------------------------- Meeting the Characters Rhys Melanie Esme ---------------------------------- What happens? Melanie is kicked out of her apartment after her flat mate's boyfriend comes onto her and she defends herself. When Rhys shows up wanting to offer her a live in position to be a nanny for his child she is hesitant to accept it. Rhys is hiding a big secret from the world. He has a few months left of maintaining the normal he has no love for in order to get his hands on his late parent's estate without strings. Meeting Melanie could help him with his daughter but ends up risking his goal more. Final thoughts This was weird. It was rocky from the get go and I nearly put it down never to be picked up again but I thought I'd give it a good chance and see how it went. It didn't get better but I did finish it. I can't put my finger on how its weird completely but; the sex scene felt very much a surprise it didn't build up to it entirely it was like the author went "ah I need something" and it was wedged in there, its built up a little by having her go with him to some gala but aside from that its not enough. The kid who is a main focus becomes a back burner. I thought you'd see more but instead its a little part of her with mainly Melanie. Would I read again?: No Would I read this author again?: Maybe?
The title of this book couldn't have been more fitting. Mr. Control & billionaire, Rhys Thayer, wants things done his way and on his time with one exception, his daughter Esme. Esme has daddy wrapped around her little finger but has struggled emotionally since her mothers death. Rhys is a totally smitten daddy which makes his character that much more sexy. But then Esme meets Mel when she accidentally becomes lost and brings Esme out of her cocoon just enough to make Rhys take notice in that chance encounter. I mean, Mel's just a waitress and Rhys is the billionaire. Esme turns out to be the glue between the two and pulls two people from totally different social standings together in a true definition of love, blind to everything except the heart. This is a nice feel good story about becoming a family even when you think your turn was lost.
Mr. Control by Maya Hughes is the story of Mel and Rhys. Wow...I really loved this story! Mel is a hard working but down on her luck but then she happens upon a little girl named Esme. Mel tries to help locate her parents and but doesn't have to much luck so she takes her to the dinner she is working at. Mel soon learns Esme father is a well off single man named Rhys, who does like to take no for an answer. I will be looking for more books by this author!
Nothing like a sexy domineering alpha male to make these quiet days steamy and interesting! Rhys and Mel’s story was very intriguing and full of so much heart and devotion! Loved every word and can’t wait for the redemption of Killian!
