The Second We Met: An enemies-to-lovers romance (Fulton U) Kindle Edition
Dear Jerk Across the Street, sorry for accidentally walking in on you and catching an eyeful of your—equipment. And hard pass on the open invitation to join you in the shower “anytime”, A-hole.
That’s the note I should’ve written. Instead I sent a pleasant and apologetic version.
Had I known Phoenix “Nix” Russo would’ve been the neighbor from hell, I’d have told him right where he could shove my words.
Nix is the big man on campus with everyone lined up at his games to make sure he knows it. Sure, he’s got piercing blue eyes, abs that don’t quit and a smile that could set fire to a set of panties from a hundred yards away, but he’s also the biggest pain in my ass.
Dear Pink-Haired Menace, learn how to take a joke and stop being such a kill-joy...
Elle Masterson called the cops on one of my parties—again. My sweet talking usually gets me out of trouble, but this time it got me into a nice pair of silver handcuffs. Now I’m on a reputation rehab tour with a stop at a spring break community service project.
Guess who’s my new boss?
Now we’re shoulder to shoulder, sweaty, tired and…she’s not anything like I expected. There might just be a heart under that hardass exterior. She’s invading my dreams and I can’t shake the feeling she’s the key to unlocking a piece of me that I’ve hidden away.
It’s only a matter of time until she finds out why I’m really here.
Maybe I can break through her walls and into her heart before that happens...one screw at a time.
***The Second We Met is a standalone new adult romance***

About the author

Maya Hughes, that's me!, can often be found sneaking in another chapter while hiding in the bathroom from her kids! :-) I’m a romance writer who loves taking inspiration from everyday life, namely my husband and biggest fan. Inspiration also strikes when I hear a song, meet someone new or daydream while at soccer practice.
I’m the mom of three little ones, the wife to an amazing husband and also work full time. Some of my favorite things are cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, white wine, laughing until I can’t breathe, traveling with my family and Jeff Goldblum.

- Reviewed in Australia on 18 March 2020Verified PurchaseLoved this book about Nix and Elle . He's the star QB she's the girl across the road with a big hate for footballers or popular guys in general cause she was burned by them more than once. These 2 never a dull moment. The bantering between the is hilarious. I loved seeing the boys and girls from the perfect first . I love the relationship between the guys they're like brothers and I loved their nerf fights. Now these 2 have alot to overcome she needs to see past his footballer status cause Nix is a great man who was trying to get closer to his dad and football was his way till he realized that it's not his dream. She has a lot of trust issues will she be able to trust him so that they can find their happy ending or is it just a dead end for these two?
- Reviewed in Australia on 24 March 2020Verified PurchaseFour stars for a good story. What do you do if the hot naked guy you stumbled upon is a painful reminder of the first person who broke your heart?? Hate them of course and this begins this enemies to lovers journey. I loved the nerf gun war, excited to read about the other characters in their own books.
- Reviewed in Australia on 12 November 2020Verified PurchaseThe story wasn’t as well written as her last, l still read it but the characters didn’t do it for me in this one. However the hints of Berks letter writing admirer in the next book has me intrigued.
- Reviewed in Australia on 4 November 2019Verified PurchaseWell written lovely story. It’s a real enemies to lovers story with Elle and Nix getting off on the wrong foot and both continuing t escalate. However when Nix, the QB is forced on to a charity building project with Elle, they slowly get past their prejudice and realise how much they have in common. It’s a really enjoyable lovely romance with many funny moments and endearing characters. I am looking forward to Jules and Berk’s story.
I wasn’t so keen on Nix’s Dad and personally I think he still needed to make it up Elle at the end. She deserved better. He should have spoken to the Dean and got things fixed and I personally think Nix should have rejected it publicly.
This was a great read. I loved Nix and Elle and so pleased to see them get their HEA.
- Reviewed in Australia on 17 October 2019The Second we Met is a enemies to lovers story and book 2 in the Fulton U series and can be read as a standalone which is what I have done; but now I might just have to keep reading because I am hooked.
Elle has her eye on the prize and she will not be distracted by the partying ways of the hot Jock from across the road, when her latest complaint put him in the firing line, she never thought she would have to spend time with him. Granted Nix puts in the work and they become closer, both holding onto secrets that could break them, their relationship can either make or break them.
Having read Hughes before I knew that this book would be jam packed with drama and emotion. There were times when I wanted to shake both of them and tell them to pull their heads in but in the end it all evened out and they got to a place where they were working on their own dreams.
I cannot wait to read book 3, the minor characters throughout this book are a great addition.

- Reviewed in Australia on 6 February 2020Verified PurchaseElle and Nix are the very best kind of opposites attract. Studious college girl falls for party boy hot jock - they shouldn’t work so well - but this time the author gives them both a back story that draws you in so you’re just as invested in their HEA as they are. Thus author is winning herself a new fangirl with her style of storytelling. Loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nix & Elle’s Story.
Verified PurchaseThis was a great read. I enjoyed the animosity that became something sweeter as they both realized they had misjudged the other and needed to reevaluate who they thought the other was. I thought Elle was such a great character to read and see how much strength it takes to move past being hurt in prior relationships in order to open yourself up to the potential of being hurt again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love!
Verified PurchaseI love me a sports story and this didn’t disappoint. I read Reece & Seph’s story awhile ago and loved it. This book is just as wonderful. Phoenix is perfect. Truly. (Sorry I can’t get on board with the nickname, Nix 😞) Elle has been broken. Too often and even Phoenix’s love can’t seem to hold her together for long. Can’t wait for Jules and Berk’s story next!!

3.0 out of 5 stars "Nothing in life was permanent. We have to soak up what we can when we can."
Verified PurchaseThis book is about Pheonix (Nix) Russo a football player and the best friend of Reece (from book 1). And then there's Ella Masterson- his next door neighbour who called the cops on him when him and his friends were having a party with loud music at their house. (multiple times)
"One second we’re cool and the next you’re biting my dam head off. It’s been like this since the second we met.”
Elle had a bad past because she got cheated on by both her ex-boyfriends. One of them was a football player so, she has major trust issues and when she met Nix, she instantly judged him to be an entitled rich kid who got away with everything when he flashed someone a smile. She also did some volunteering activities and it seemed that she genuinely cared about that. (But I can't overlook the fact that she did all that to get an award . The same award for which one of her ex-boyfriends was competing too.)
"I’d hefted a championship trophy over my head, but this felt like a win I’d never forget. My first completely unprompted smile from her lit me up like a dam Christmas tree."
But, Nix was instantly captivated by her since the moment they met. He seemed to be determined to get under her skin. His dad was a former professional football player and he wanted Nix to get drafted and play professionally even though he was always interested in cooking and helping out at his grandfather's restaurant. When Elle calls the cops on him, that leads his dad to enroll him in some community work and there he crosses paths with Elle again.
"You call me a liar, but you’re lying to yourself. You know who I am. You’re one of the few people who do."
Elle was a bit too rude and judgemental for my liking. At times I felt that she was a bit selfish and didn't deserve Nix at all. But, ingnoring all these flaws, she was a really good friend to Jules. Their dynamic was just adorable.
"You’re so worried about being hurt that you can’t even see that you’re hurting the people around you. I love you and would never hurt you like this. No matter what you think, know that’s true.”
I'm so glad that Nix often called her out on her bs and double standards. I get that Elle had a bad past relationship history but that didn't give her a right to act rudely and judge some people around her without reading knowing them. These traits didn't make me like her character until the very end. Maybe if something more about her past had been revealed, I would've connected with her.
But, I'm definitely eager to read how Jules is going to tackle the note situation with Berk. So, I'm definitely excited to read the next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good follow on read.
Verified PurchaseNix is the handsome football player finishing off school and likely to be picked in the draft if his father has anything to do with it. Nix has been pushed to the limits all his life from a father who used to play football and now sees his son as a star only Nix truly doesnt think that's what he wants and how does he tell his father. Elle moves in to digs across from his and she immediately hates the noise and the parties the lads have reguarly. To clean his image his father pushes him into doing charity stuff and Elle is there. They do good and she starts to like him but has so much going on trying to win an award that will pay her fees that when she finds out Nix has won it she is devastated. Nix needs to make things right. Great second book
