New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Julia Kent writes romantic comedy with an edge. Since 2013, she has sold more than 2 million books, with 4 New York Times bestsellers and more than 21 appearances on the USA Today bestseller list. Her books have been translated into French and German, with more titles releasing in the future.
From billionaires to BBWs to new adult rock stars, Julia finds a sensual, goofy joy in every contemporary romance she writes. Unlike Shannon from Shopping for a Billionaire, she did not meet her husband after dropping her phone in a men's room toilet (and he isn't a billionaire she met in a romantic comedy).
She lives in New England with her husband and three children where she is the only person in the household with the gene required to change empty toilet paper rolls.

Read this originally as chapters. The release of a novella is a pleasant surprise. This story is background for the newest series starting with Fluffy. These stories are fun and the humor is outstanding. The best part this novella is free at the moment. Grab it
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2024Mallory is very much out of her element when put in proximity to her long-time crush, Will Lotham. This is cute, awkward, and really funny.
I was disappointed at the lack of heat, I mean, not even a kiss, but I'm hoping that this prequel is showing her innocence and not a predictor of things to come. That said, the bit with the purple... personal massager 🍆... is definitely worth reading this novella.
I read and listened to the audio book. The narrator is Erin Mallon. I think she was great. The snark, innocence, and envying else sounded through.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2019On the fence about starting this series? Give Little Miss Perfect a try - it’s a great example of what to expect from the rest of the series, and sets up the story for Fluffy (and beyond) perfectly.
Short, light, and so funny, this novella introduces readers to the couple featured in Fluffy. It’s set during their senior year of high school, as the smart girl and the athletic guy run into each other before finals. While they’ve been in each other’s orbits for a long time (and there may be some major crushing going on from one side), they’ve never spent any time together actually breaking past the superficial things everyone sees. One chance encounter causes them to delve a little deeper, and what they see has some serious potential... it’s only too bad they didn’t get to know each other sooner.
This isn’t the full story; you’ll have to read Fluffy to find out how this love story ends, but it’s a great example of Julia Kent’s skill as an author and showcases the humor and nuanced connections you’ll see in future books. I loved getting a feel for who these two are deep down, and I can’t wait for more from this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2019This tasty little prequel is the setup for the novel Fluffy, and introduces Mallory and Will in high school. Will is the whole package … the kind of drool-worthy guy that quirky Mallory knows is out of her league. I mean what do they have in common? He’s rich, one of the cool kids, a star athlete, Homecoming King, yada yada yada. She’s hardly modelesque, has untamable frizzy hair, LOVES to talk, hangs with eccentric friends and drives a bomb car. These polar opposites have barely spoken all the way through school to the last day of finals before heading off to separate Ivy League colleges. Oh yeah. There’s that one thing they have in common. Both are whip smart and in head-to-head competition to be Valedictorian of the class. But, while Mallory is laidback about sliding home to victory in their 4-year rivalry race for the top spot, Will feels the constant pressure of his parents to succeed in every way. He needs to win and it’s wearing him down.
I admit not being familiar with this author, despite owning a few of her books that I have yet to read. She’s got a funny bone for sure, and a knack for colorful characters and easy dialogue. Mallory is a talkative charmer who seems to have caught Will’s eye, despite not fitting in with his crowd. For me, it actually works against Mallory that she talks too much. The novella turns out to be a single, long scene of the pair running into each other before their final exam and finally having a private chit chat. There were laughs, and silly bits, and conversation where they dig deeper into each other than either might have ever imagined. Although attention hog Mallory was the focal point, I was more drawn to Will. But, deep down this author isn’t the kind of funny that gets to me. The scene was overextended for my taste, and milked too far with jokey treatment of a prank pulled on Mallory with endless innuendoes. There’s a rule in comedy about knowing where the “sweet spot” is, and this author seems to go way beyond that point until it’s overworked by the end of the scene. I have a huge background in comedy and this fell short. She had me, until she lost me. Like a guest staying at the party too long. I thought I would like the story more initially, but truly lost interest by the end.
Clearly, the author has many fans and me not being one of them is no small loss. And, I wouldn’t want to dissuade anyone from reading the prequel or the follow-up novel, but you can only milk a joke or setup so far before it’s overdone, and I was expecting a bit more substance to the story leading into Fluffy. My overall bland reaction was further borne out by the teaser chapter to Fluffy at the end of the prequel. Again, with the dragging out of another jokey setup and innuendoes in a comedy of errors mistake, which BTW, as is the title, was just a means to hook interest and nothing more. Fluffy may be 10 years down the road, but Mallory came off like she was still 18 and too dumb for me to be such a smart girl. I didn’t laugh once. So that means I won’t be reading it.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2020I decided to revisit the rest of this series since Hasty came out last week.
This is the prequel to the series. It not only introduces us to Mallory and her best friends but it also sets things up for the first novel in the series, Fluffy.
OMG, it is hilarious!!! But then that is part of what Julia does best.
Erin is one of my favorite narrators and this was an awesome listen. Now I'm chomping at the bit to continue on to Fluffy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prequel Novella for the book Fluffy
Another hilarious story from Julia Kent's Do-Over series. This novella is the prequel to the book 'Fluffy' and is the early high school days for the characters Mallory and Will.
Like the main novel - Fluffy - this book is absolutely hilarious, and really ads some depth and background to the action that follows on in that book.
Although only a short story, there was some laugh-out-loud moments for me, with some very witty banter between these two characters. I thought it was an excellent addition to this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining prequel …
This is a quick read and a great lead-in to ‘Fluffy’. There are several laugh-out-loud moments along with the drama and angst associated with an unrequited crush. This depiction of high school with its social hierarchy – the jocks, the brains, the goths etc., was very realistic and brought back many memories of days gone by. It’s well written with well-developed and engaging characters. I’m looking forward to reading Fluffy, to see how these characters have fared post high school.

4.0 out of 5 stars This was the calm before a storm
Interesting backstory can't wait to read the full book. Would be a riot when Mallory gets what exactly a fluffer is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome intro tale
A fun and banter-filled short introductory tale to a potential romance.
A series of misconceptions and miscommunication leads to laughter and a whole lot more.
Can’t wait for the follow up in Fluffy.
