Housewife Chronicles, by Jennifer Snow, is a stand alone story. This is a book with a bit of mystery, a bit of romance, and a whole lot of friendship.
Beth Cartwright is a middle aged housewife, mother of two teenagers, and now a widow. Two weeks before her husband’s sudden death, she had discovered he had been cheating on her, with her neighbor no less, a much younger yoga instructor. HER yoga instructor. Now she is forced to figure out a new reality, two angry kids, find a way to make a living, and how to move on with her life.
Gina Thompson never had much growing up. She worked hard for her dream of owning her own home and yoga studio. She craved security. She never meant to fall in love with her very married next door neighbor, Howard. But she did, they loved each other. She felt they were soul mates. Being found out was really a blessing, she finally had Howard to herself, but for only two weeks. Now she is grieving and alone.
Howard’s death was ruled a heart attack at first, until suspicions arose. And of course, the first suspect is always the jilted wife. The second suspect is always the mistress. Beth’s unlikely allies come from her group of housewife friends with whom she never quite felt she belonged. They band together to prove their friend’s innocence and do a little investigating of their own. Add to this mix, Gina’s very sexy twin brother, Gino, and a very sexy cop, Detective Ken Banks, and Beth’s life is turned upside down.
This was such a good book. I always love Jennifer’s way of telling a story and this kept me turning the pages all the way through. I’m not sure how I feel about Gina. She was very naïve in her thinking at times. But, she was also loyal if that makes sense being that she was the mistress. Beth’s friends were amazing in their dedication to their friend. And Beth, I loved this woman. Her kids, especially her daughter, would have made me crazy by itself. Add to it being a suspect in a murder, having to live next door to Gina, and everything else she was dealing with. But, she also sort of had a reawakening you could call it. Revisiting passions she had long left behind to be a wife and mother. And also, experiencing attraction again after all these years, the possibility of romance.
I admit that I am a romance junkie, and might not have picked up this book if I didn’t already love the author. But I really did enjoy it. Beth was so strong, so resilient, and I loved her group of friends. This was entertaining, fun and real. I can’t wait to see what Jennifer does next.
This is a Women's Fiction with a little bit of Romance and Mystery mixed in. This book is told by Beth (widowed and single mom) and Gina (next door neighbor to Beth and Beth's died husband's mistress). This book is I fill about women that are not normally friends become friends and stands by each other. I love this book so much. It is written very well, and the characters are so well done. I also feel the character change and grow during this book, and I love when that happens in book. There is so much put into this book, but it is written so well it takes no time to get though this book. The pacing was great is was not to fast or to slow, and there was enough going on that you did not want to put it down at all. The romance was not very big in this book, so do not pick this book up looking for a romance book because you will be disappointed. The mystery was a little big part of this book then the romance parts, but I would say the mystery is like a cozy mystery book not a thriller or a regular mystery book. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher or author (Jennifer Snow) via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review about how I feel about this book, and I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my digital copy in exchange for an honest review. It has been awhile since I requested this book and knowing myself, I requested it based on the cover and the title alone... sometimes that bites me in the butt but this time, I really was happy with my choice. The story is tole by two narrators...Beth and Gina. Gina is the woman who was having an affair with Beth's husband until he died suddenly...they live next door to each other and have the same group of neighborhood friends so life is fairly interesting since the two were outed. When a police officer shows up at Beth's door one day telling Beth her husband was actually poisoned, things get even more interesting...BOTH women are forced to get out of their comfort zones and evolve into different people and do things that massively scare them...and I love that stuff. I would say I am more like Beth who lives a safe life, not doing anything that scares her and trying the best she can to raise two kids not to be an asshole... but I would LIKE to be more like Gina in that she is healthy and zen. The book goes on to show what happened to the cheating husband and how you can possibly come back from something like that, maybe even with a new friend or two...and more faith and hope in yourself than ever before. I loved it, all in all.
"You can't avoid grandma forever, mom," Alana says. Watch me. "I'm not avoiding her. I'm a little busy ruining breakfast at the moment." I grab the pan and toss the mess into the garbage and then put it in the sink. "She deserves to know why you killed dad."
Beth's husband of fifteen years leaves her for Gina, the younger, attractive yoga instructor who lives next door. Two weeks after moving in with her, he has a heart attack and dies. But...it turns out it wasn't just a heart attack--he was poisoned. And now Beth is the prime suspect.
Beth's coffee klatch of fellow housewives convene and decide to solve the crime and clear Beth's name. But her biggest ally turns out to be Gina, the other woman.
A la "Desperate Housewives," Housewife Chronicles is part cozy mystery and part women's friendship story with a healthy dash of sarcastic wit and a sprinkle of romance. The story is well-written and well-crafted, with many great lines that are funny or that resonate, or both.
All the characters are believable and relatable, even the other woman, Gina. It's a story of personal growth, forgiveness and redemption. I've preordered book two!
Thank you so much to everyone reading and reviewing early! This had to be the most fun book to write:) It is definitely a dark comedy with a murder mystery twist and domestic suspense vibe, but it also centers around an unlikely female friendship. Hope you enjoy it! xo
Her husband's affair coming to light two weeks before his death should have been the worst thing to happen to Beth Cartwright that year. But being a widowed, single mom in a community of upper-class housewives is proving to be far more difficult. Living next door to her husband's mistress and her former yoga instructor - Gina Thompson, has Beth wanting to go pack up her teenage kids and get the hell out of the neighbourhood. But when she becomes a suspect in her husband's death, she needs to rely on her husband's mistress and the rest of her quirky neighbourhood friends to keep her out of jail.
Housewife Chronicles is a dark comedy with a hint of mystery and a focus on unlikely female friendships.
I cannot tell you how much I was taken in by that cover, by the promise of a dark comedy, a lil murder mystery, and female friendships. I was genuinely excited to read this one, and unfortunately it fell flat on its face (or my face, seeing as I've wasted three hours of my life reading it). I would absolutely not have finished this book if it hadn't been an arc, or if I hadn't been at least a tiny bit hopeful that I'd eventually see some of these 'unlikely female friendships' (hint: we don't). It was a quick, mostly-easy read and that's legitimately the best thing I can say about it because I had some problems.
1) All the women in this book are horrible. Genuinely awful people. So are basically all of the men, for that matter. Speaking of the men - I don't know how you can sell your book as having a 'focus on female friendships' when SO SO much of this book revolves around men. And often ENTIRELY unnecessary men. There was several (and I do mean several) romances shoehorned in, and of course every single man was Greek God Attractive. The female friendships were almost entirely unexplored, very shallow, or just not friendships that any person would enjoy having. At this point I am genuinely concerned as to what the author thinks friendship means.
2) This is honestly one of the bitterest books towards women I have ever read in my life. I think the author was trying to go for some sort of candid humour? But never, and I mean never, have I ever read so many descriptions of breasts. Or so many body comparisons. From the MC saying she's not surprised her husband cheated on her with the ~perfect-bodied yoga instructor, to the yoga instructor saying that the cheating was probably due to the wife's insecurities, and adding in a healthy dose of 'it's always surprising when someone is intelligent and large-breasted' (this is not about the mistress by the way, who is written to be SO naïve). Here's some choice quotes to demonstrate this:
"That's right ladies, this middle-aged, single, divorced/widowed woman without the gel nails, fake tits, and tattooed eyebrows has caught the attention of the hottest man on the planet."
"Everyone always forgot [she] was a triple b threat - boobs, butt, and brains - because she only ever used two of them to her advantage."
"Right, because who expects the stay at home mom with the triple d boobs to save the day?"
3) I do not like infidelity in books - but from the description it was obvious that infidelity had occurred and I knew this going in. What I didn't expect, however, was literally half of the book to be from the mistress' perspective - whining about how nobody offered her sympathy for losing her lover, nobody brought her casseroles, how what the MC + the husband had wasn't real and meaningful like what SHE had with him, how well she got on with the kids of the MC. It was gross. I don't need to spend that much time inside the mind of a naïve 'homewrecker' - no matter how badly she's written.
4) THIS BIT'S A SPOILER AND I DON'T CARE. At one point the mistress is staring at the husband and spontaneously orgasms. This is literally written into the book. And even if I was willing to suspend my disbelief (I am not) - she then wonders if the wife is capable of spontaneously orgasming upon staring at her husband, as if she's special for being able to? Or as if the wife doesn't love him enough to? IT WAS VERY WEIRD.
5) There are multiple romances shoehorned in for, as far as I can see, no good reason. I'm gonna put the next bit behind a spoiler wall but I'd recommend you spoil it for yourself anyway: I just can't, esp in 2020, see why you would write such pro-cop, abuse-of-power shit. Including the following quote, when the MC quips to the cop that he must be well paid:
"Nope. We're still overworked and underpaid, dealing with assholes on a daily basis." Grim.
6) The mystery was unfortunately very predictable. And the mystery portion also featured some magic, extremely long-range, spyware pen. Like, I can suspend my disbelief for a spy movie maybe? But for some random lawyer, absolutely not.
Overall, I hated this. I just did. There was so so much wrong with it throughout. The dialogue was extremely unrealistic in places, they had an evil-MIL trope, the brattiest kids you can imagine, and just awful people being awful about each other. I think it was going for some sort of vulgar comedy (ft. murder), but it was a weirdly sexist, anti-woman, looks-obsessed, flimsy romance (ft. murder). At this point, if you told me Jennifer Snow was the pen-name for a horny, male cop I'd believe you.
Thanks to netgalley for the arc in exchange for my honest opinion, and bravo to whoever designed that cover and wrote that blurb cause I feel wholly swizzed out of a good read. This is out on kindle on the 12/1/21, or apparently available to buy as a physical copy now. Enjoy.
A fun and easy to read book. It's not a genre I normally read but I had fun reading it since it was a good breather for me in between all the crime thrillers I was reading at the time. The book deals with serious issues like spousal infidelity, bullying, teen pregnancy, gaslighting but I loved how the author managed to spin all these issues into a story that is fun, funny and quirky. I loved Beth and personally I felt she was a bit nice, understanding and forgiving towards Gina in the end because no matter how hard I tried I just could not like Gina! The three friends- Grace, Holly and Sophia- owned their own space and I can't wait to see what the author has in store for them. Beth's two teenage children deserved a good shaking/talking down for treating their mother the way they did. I was pretty glad that Howard decided to off himself 🤐 (even if unknowingly) because it made way for Detective Banks ❤️🔥-- but how I wish we could have had a scene with ghost Howard and him finding out that both his wife and girlfriend had already moved on to greener pastures 😉.
All in all I liked the book and I look forward to seeing what's next for the characters.
My thanks to NetGalley and the author Jennifer Snow for the e-Arc of the book. I have read two of her thriller books which she writes as J. M. Winchester but this is the first romance book I have read by her.
Beth and Gina are neighbors who happen to love the same man, Beth's husband. Beth thought she had a happy marriage and family with two teenagers until she discovered the affair. Two weeks later when Beth's husband is found dead, she, of course, is the number one suspect! Beth leans on her neighbors, including Gina, while trying to clear her name. This book has it all! Friendship, it is funny at time, and thrilling at others. I am already recommending friends pick it up as soon as it goes on sale, January 12, 2021. Thank you NetGalley, and Jennifer Snow for the advance copy in exchange for a fair review.
I read Housewife Chronicles in ONE day, I LOVED it! After reading the summary, I assumed this was going to be a light, fluffy, “chic lit” type of read, but it was not what I expected at all! There was so much more substance to it than that, and though there were certainly some humorous scenes between the housewife friends, there was also some sophisticated mystery, romance, and drama to round it all out. Aside from the author’s talent with her writing prose, the characters are what truly made this a great book. They were so eclectic, unique, and enjoyable and I found myself entertained and intrigued page after page, especially by Beth. I love her! Great book!
Housewife Chronicles was a bizarre read. It was so twisted, convoluted, and messed up. Beth’s husband was having an affair with the next door neighbor, who was also her yoga instructor. Then the husband died. There are suspects and arrests with the neighborhood becoming involved. I just found the attitude of Beth toward Gina at the beginning implausible, along with the easy acceptance of the kids concerning their father’s affair. I didn’t like any of the characters except for the detective. The interaction between the characters was just not believable. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the early read.
It was really hard to believe the plot of this book. Some of the character's reactions were very weird (like for example the kids were ok with their dad's affair, weren't particularly sad for their dad's death, and were almost willing their mother was acused of murdering their dad). Beth was an ok character but I couldn't put up with Gina at all and didn't like reading her chapters, even if the reader is suposed to empathize with her. I expected so much more for the cover and the blurb.
** Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. **
I sure wanted to like HOUSEWIFE CHRONICLES, billed as a “dark comedy with a hint of mystery.” But the crazy characters, preposterous plot and insipid mystery did not engage me. Got to 60% and DNF. Still grateful to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the review copy. Opinions are mine.
This is women's fiction at it's best. Two weeks after Beth learns of her husband's affair with the young, sexy yoga instructor living next door, he's dead. With an erection. Beth is trying to keep it together- her kids are lying; her creativity is dead. Thank goodness for her coffee club- neighborhood women meeting weekly to gossip. Gina is utterly devastated. As the other woman, obviously she lacks the community's support- she's adrift. Her twin brother, Gino, stays for a few weeks to lend support and guidance. Then Howard's death is ruled a homicide. Told from both Beth and Gina's point of view helped not only define both characters but also add suspense to the mystery of Howard's death. Women uplifting women, providing support and humor. Great read. Highly recommend.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my advanced copy!
Beth finds out her husband is having an affair with their next door neighbor Gina ....two weeks later he is dead. Beth or Gina? Who did it??
I enjoyed the read but dear heavens no way the story was believable. I rolled my eyes a lot during this book and had a hard time liking any of the characters. I really thought it would be a little more serious than it was and the who done it just wasn’t shocking, funny and ironic but nothing to brag about. This one would be good for a book club that doesn’t really discuss the book .
This story is more of a spoof, so ridiculously implausible that I really just trudged through until the end. I was hoping to enjoy this story but it wasn’t for me. I thank Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
4.25 stars / This review will be posted at BookwormishMe.com on 30 December 2020.
Beth never expected to find out her husband was having an affair. After all, they had been together nearly forever. They have two kids and Beth is a devoted mom and wife. But there you have it. Her husband died with a smile on his face in his mistress’s house. Next door to Beth. Oh, and by the way, the mistress is also Beth’s yoga instructor.
If all that isn’t enough, things are definitely going to get worse for Beth and Gina, the mistress. Allies are found in unlikely places, though, and perhaps the chaos about to rain down on Beth will prove to be the change she needs to move on with her life. If Beth doesn’t kill Gina first.
This is an undeniably fun novel about adultery and love and friendship and family. There’s an old saying that everything happens for a reason, but when Beth’s life spins out of control, you almost have to question what the reason is. Jennifer Snow’s ability to write with humor and wit in a heartwarming way makes this novel special. It put a smile on my face even in the worst of the times for Beth and Gina. Though somewhat implausible, it is still quite an enjoyable read. Quick, fun, entertaining.
This is such a mind twisting, head spinning romantic mystery/dark comedy that I really devoured!
I enjoyed the collage of characters! Women who were all up in everyone’s business, an evasive mouse, an over-worked cop, a sexy brother, a couple of opinionated children, and a (dead) cheating husband.
Is it realistic…no, not really…it is a women’s fiction after all! There are so many laugh-out-loud moments, jaw dropping moments, and the twisted end. This was definitely a different sort of read for me…but one that I completely enjoyed! 4.5 stars!
This is a standalone book, though the title sounds like part of a series, and well it could be the beginning of one, going by the small group of friendly upper class housewives with various tones to their personality.
A mild romance with an added mystery element, this book made for a quick read. The writing style is good, and the narration is presented from the perspective of both Beth (the cheated housewife), and Gina (the homewrecker next door), and sounds balanced. Witty at places, the story emphasizes on a supportive sisterhood, and also brushes on guilt parenting and manipulative children.
Her husband's affair, with their next door neighbor, coming to light two weeks before his death should have been the worst thing to happen to Beth Cartwright that year.
This novel was very entertaining,, and sometime just plain hilarious, Choosing to tell the story from both the widow’s and mistress’s point of view was a great choice. I love Beth, and could identify with her struggles. Gina is incredible naive and I found my self saying, “seriously” out loud more than once. Her relationship with Beth’s teenagers was a little out there for my taste, but it did not take away from the story itself.
Engaging and entertaining read. Thank you Jennifer Snow and Netgalley for the ARC.
Say it with me, y'all...𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝙣𝙤𝙩 👏🏼 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙤𝙣𝙚 👏🏼 𝙚𝙡𝙨𝙚'𝙨 👏🏼 𝙨𝙥𝙤𝙪𝙨𝙚!
Oh, MAN. Let me start by saying I loved reading this book. But these characters...love to 𝘩𝘢𝘵𝘦 them! Synopsis says "Housewife Chronicles is a dark comedy with a hint of mystery and a focus on unlikely female friendships." Well, it's definitely a dark comedy and there's a hint of mystery but female friendships?! More like frenemies! The story is told from the POV of Beth, recent widow, and Gina, her husband's mistress. Gina is abhorrent and my BP spiked while reading her chapters! You don't get to have an affair with a married man, take over raising his ex wife's children, and become one big happy family. This girl was so delusional it was almost unbelievable. We do see a friendship of sorts evolve between Beth and the other neighborhood wives, but it never seems genuine. Either way, this was a fun, engrossing read. I'm here for the drama, but so very thankful it's not 𝗺𝘆 life falling apart 😬 Thank you @netgalley and @jensnowauthor for this addictive read! Y'all can grab your copy January 12 🌴🌴🌴🌴🌴 5/5
I call this book “messy fabulous.” It brings out the messy parts of a marriage, yet the fabulous ways a life can turn out, even after tragedy.
There’s Beth - the devoted housewife who’s in a marriage she “never knew” was headed south. She’s at times a woman defeated, trying to revive the spark in herself. The author is good at expressing the feelings, both good and bad, a mother of a teenage daughter would have.
Then, there’s Gina - the stereotypical peace and love yoga instructor who thinks she’s done nothing wrong. Is she involving herself in others lives for good or for bad reasons?
The revelations in the book are somewhat predictable, but did not deter from my enjoyment of the book. It’s lighthearted with humorous parts, as well. I look forward to reading more by Ms. Snow.
This book is enthralling! Written from both the wife and mistress’s point of view, It is filled with healing and unlikely friendship.
Beth is a stay at home mom of 2, insecure in her body and struggling to make ends meet after her cheating husband dies.
Gina lost the love of her life, her neighbor’s husband. She thinks well of Beth and is just trying to help her and the kids out.
Are they both crazy?
The reason this was not a 5 star read was because the wrap up at the end of the book felt a little too easy. Jennifer did a great job of keeping the reader on their toes and developing her plotline. I wish we’d seen a little more of that in the last couple chapters. However, I am still in love with this book and will be buying it when available
I found Jennifer Snow's romance books just this year. I immediately fell in love and tried to read as many as I could. When she asked for reviewers of this women's fiction/mystery book, I knew I had to give it a try. It was amazing. I could not stop reading from start to finish. It was like being dropped into the best season of Desperate housewives. This book was told from the POV of Beth (the widow) and Gina (the woman who cheated with Beth's husband). Right off the bat, I loved Beth's snarky personality. She's been wronged, and we definitely see this. She also has really great character growth throughout the book. Throw in attempting to solve the mystery of her husband's death and add in having to work with her husband's mistress to do so is the recipe for a really fun book. Gina was great too! She sees the good in everyone, and you couldn't help but like her--even Beth. The author did a fabulous job of writing the uniqueness of each housewife, too. Yes, there's more characters than just Beth and Gina. Everything about this book's fun, intriguing nature had me devouring it!
Housewife Chronicles is a highly addictive read! Jennifer Snow is in top form with this murder mystery thriller novel, with some dark comedy mixed in as well. The story revolves around a 30 something woman whose husband has left her for a younger woman. And that pretty little mistress just happens to live right next door. And both women travel in the same women’s social circle. They’re even in the same yoga class. Can you just imagine how that might go?
Housewife Chronicles is a delicious mix of murder-mystery, thriller and romance. This captivating, genre bending story checks off my reading preferences. The fascinating plot with all the twists and turns kept me on my toes. I finished reading Housewife Chronicles in record time.
You'd think that finding out about your husband's affair, (with your neighbor and yoga instructor), just two weeks before he died would flip your world upside down, right?
Well, wait until you discover that the police thinks you're the one who murdered him.
Passion. Deception. Lies. Truth.
Housewife Chronicles is a great book with a hint of mystery, lots of self-discovery and many, many questions about life and how to let yourself trust other people - even the ones you never expected you would.
I totally loved the characters and the writing style, going from Beth's to Gina's point of view on each chapter. Seeing everything that happened from their perspective makes you realize how many different lives people around us actually live, and it was very interesting to be a part of this particular messed-up and confusing reality.
"I'd known what every day was going to look like. No surprises. No drama. No heartache.
Now, everything is uncertain, confusing and spinning out of my control."
All of the housewives personalities, struggles and perfect-looking lives were crucial to the story and I can definitely imagine these women existing anywhere. Secrets and all.
This book gave me a major "Little Fires Everywhere" vibe, considering where they live, the fact that Beth is an artist, the motherhood feelings and the melancholic-dramatic children in the background. Also, if you're a Taylor Swift fan, you'll probably think about the love-triangle story that she wrote on her latest album, "Folklore", which was kind of (totally) incredible for me.
Huge thanks to NetGalley for approving my request! This is my first experience and I seriously couldn't be more excited. #HousewifeChronicles #NetGalley
While the blurb intrigued me, Jennifer Snow hit a home run with Housewife Chronicles! I was hooked on this who-done-it and it's cast of wacky characters from beginning to end. That said, this review will have to be vague to protect the storyline.
The book is everything the blurb says and more. Beth, our lead character is the most honest character I have read in awhile. Along with her attitude-filled kids, her gaggle of neighborhood girlfriends, the cop, the whore's brother and the whore herself, Beth really doesn't know which way is up at the moment. What she does know, is that she didn't kill her husband. Or at least she doesn't think she did. Now the craziest assembly of women is gathering to help her figure out the death of her husband and the beginning of her new life all at once.
I feel bad I can't give this book a more detailed review, but I really don't want to give anything away. Housewife Chronicles is full of humor, angst, sexy and mystery all rolled into one very entertaining read!
Fun Tale Told In A Possibly Unique Way. In some ways, this was a typical light-ish, women's fiction level mystery involving a dead husband, a separated wife, and the mistress who caused the separation. It ultimately becomes a feel-good tale of friendship and bonding between female neighbors with a bit of a dark undertone, which was very well executed - darker than the Hallmark Romance level romances Snow typically writes under this name, but nowhere *near* as dark (and *far* funnier) than the depths Snow plumbs as JM Winchester. But what truly makes this book so rare and possibly unique is the decision to tell the tale from the perspectives of both the wife... *and* the mistress. Excellently told story that will ultimately have you guessing until very nearly the last word. Very much recommended.
