I’m Laura Kincaid. The last year of my life has been what dreams are made of, but I think I’ve forgotten my own dreams. My best friend and I traveled across the country with no responsibilities. However, the lack of structure and routine got to me, and now I’m a little lost and I can’t figure out why. I’m a planner, a doer, and a lover of all things sparkly. My quarter life crisis started one night when I realized I was in love. Don’t worry, reading about my hot mess will make you feel better about yours.

About the author

R.L. Griffin published her first book in 2004. After that she focused on practicing law. A few years ago she began writing the By A Thread series, which is out now. Her goal is to keep readers on their toes, whether it's the plot twist or the book itself, her books are outside any box. There is a little bit of grit in most of her books and a ton of cussing. Most books are enjoyed better with a glass of wine, or whiskey, whatever your poison may be.
She lives in Atlanta with her husband, kid and dog. She loves to travel and meeting readers.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2019Laura, or Lo, has it all, or so it seems. Underneath it all, she is just like the rest of us with flaws, insecurities and scars on her heart. After a yearlong vacation with her BFF Megan, the Lottery Lolita, the girls settle in Napa to run their new business. Megan gets engaged to her dream man, and Lo thinks she will be the fun, single friend forever- the one who holds everyone at a distance.
Even though she's living the dream in Napa (who wouldn't kill for those views!!), Lo still has a huge hole in her heart from her past and she struggles to accept happiness. Enter Max, an equally struggling individual with whom she shares the first spark in forever. They both have so much to work through, it seems impossible. Little by little, Lo reveals herself and her inner demons, and works so hard to conquer them. Can that be enough? Can love be enough to save her relationship with Max, who turns out to be everything she ever wanted? Is she worthy?
As a person with flaws, scars, and quirks, I teared up quite a few times and felt like Lo needed a big hug, even though she is NOT a hugger. At times, I identified with her so much, that she could be telling parts of my story.
The sarcasm, the witty banter, the pace- it was all on point. Through reading this series, the characters have become like real people that I could imagine seeing out somewhere. They are so crafted that they're believable. This is definitely NOT your average romance and definitely worth the read.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2019This is the story of a woman who seemingly has the perfect life but struggles personally with whether she is worthy of a second chance.
If you read book one in this series, you already know the fun vibe of the two main characters. While book one was about Megan Walker and she path to love, this one is about her BFF, Laura Kincaid.
On the surface, Laura has it all.
An awesome job working with her BFF.
That same BFF is a millionaire, which affords the two to have a lot of fun, including riding a private plane. Jealous!!
And she has a number of suitors who would love to spend more time with her.
However, Laura has not fully recovered from her past. Without getting this book covers a lot of heavy themes.
Death
Suicide
PTSD
Cheating
But the author tones them down, weaving the difficult parts within a mostly happy story of two BFFs and their daily antics.
I really enjoy the banter between Laura, Megan and their mutual friend, Justin. They insult each other left and right, but it is clear they all care deeply about one another. Laura internalizes a lot of the heartache and pain she feels about her past, believing that she isn’t worthy of a second chance in love. And her friends try their best to pull her out of that slump with a series of LOL outings.
It wasn’t clear what direction Laura’s love life would lead. She clearly has a deep connection with Maximilian “Max” Faulk, the BFF of Megan’s fiancé. But she seems to push away from that connection, not feeling worthy of his attention. On top of that, it is unclear as to whether Max is involved with Delaney, and new co-worker and friend. Not sure why the uncertainty of this relationship was dragged out. Add that potential drama to Max’s own personal issues, and you have a recipe for some angst. Which I didn’t expect.
With all of the angst/drama mentioned above, does take time for the romance to fully develop in this story, but the author does a great job of keeping the reader entertained along with way. Laura, Megan and Justin are a riot and total a group I’d want to hang around. If you are looking for a story that has a mixture of laughs and tough inner reflection, this is worth checking out.
“Lo, nothing is going to change in reality. You already filled in all my cracks.”
“That’s a weird way of putting it.”
“Why? Without you, I’d fall apart.”
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2019WOW! Laura & Max’s love blew me away! The friendship between Laura & Megan is a beautiful thing full of love and laughs. Add Justin and you’ll be laughing out loud. I couldn’t put this book down and was up way too late. Great story!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2019A fun, quirky book from Griffin.
I tried to read this as a stand-alone and I would not recommend it. I think there is a lot of information that is pulled from Megan’s book.
Laura was fun and she had a lot to work through. I enjoyed her personality throughout the book.
Though the book wasn’t my favorite, I still enjoyed it and wanted the best for Laura!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2019This is the second book in this series. Laura seems to be living her dream and working with her BFF as well, but inside the insecurities as hidden, and many obstacles have to be overcome for her and Max before they can move forward into a relationship. This is a good story which is humorous, but to be honest this was not my favourite story as I felt like the story seemed to jump all over the place. I look forward to reading more of her work in the future.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2019There are so many parts of this story and of the characters that I can relate to. Griffin took some deep subjects such as the death of a loved one and PTSD, while still incorporating humor, to craft a great book.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2019I have been waiting for a new R.L. Griffin book and I can say that she 100% delivered! I loved Laura’s story with all my heart, yes I loved her in Sunshine & Whiskey but I have a whole new take on her now! She wasn’t what I expected, her story wasn’t what I expected but damn, I love her.
This is Laura’s journey and as with any book from R.L. Griffin it took me on an emotional ride. Sure she is sarcastic and funny but she’s got some real pain in there too and as it all unfolded it broke my heart at times. I laughed, and hurt and got a little mad, but I loved it. I loved the realness and the rawness I felt from her, and the strength she has, even if she thinks she’s broken. And then there’s Max, and their complicated situation. I understood it, I could see where it was all supposed to be casual fun, and then the heart gets involved and for Laura, what do you do when you don’t think it’s supposed to happen?! And what happens when you find out that the other person is just as broken?
So yeah, she’s part hot mess, part amazeballs and when you add in Max, Megan and the rest of the crew it’s an amazing ride! I love that R.L. Griffin can make me laugh and cry and feel in every book! This is a must read!
