The Anti-Boyfriend Kindle Edition
At first, my neighbor Deacon frustrated me.
Sure, he was great-looking and friendly.
But our walls were thin, and on occasion, he’d bring women to his place and keep me awake while he “entertained” them.
As a single mother to an infant, I didn’t appreciate it.
So, finally it was my turn.
When my daughter wouldn’t stop wailing one night, Mr. Manwhore came knocking on my door.
Miraculously, at the sound of his voice, Sunny stopped crying. And when he held her…she eventually fell asleep in his arms.
Deacon was rough on the exterior, but apparently on the inside? Mr. Single-and-Ready-to-Mingle was a baby whisperer.
After that night, we became friends.
He’d go for coffee runs. Come over to chat. Normal friend stuff.
But over time, our conversations ran deeper. We got closer.
Until one night we crossed the line.
Our friendship turned into a complicated mess.
I’d gone and fallen for a guy who’d sworn off commitment and kids.
I knew Deacon was starting to care for me too, even though Sunny and I didn’t fit into any plan he’d ever imagined for himself.
He was wrong for me—so wrong that I’d dubbed him the “anti-boyfriend.”
Then why did I wish more than anything that I could be the one woman to change him?

- Reviewed in Australia on 10 February 2022Verified PurchaseGreat read, with a slow build that had me in the edge. I think it’s the first book I’ve read with a special need child and it was beautifully written story. The understanding in the authors words resonated with me as a reader. Sunny was totally normal in my eyes, god just made her a little bit more special.
Cary’s age was just a number, the maturity she conveyed was exceptional. It was refreshing to be honest and I don’t put it down to her being a mother it’s her DNA.
Declan I was on the fence at first, uncomfortably so in his bachelorhood, I understood he’s a single guy and he’s a free agent but I wasn’t interested in experiencing it. But he grew on me, his unconditional love for Sunny and his protective instincts did the trick.
It’s a yes from me.
- Reviewed in Australia on 18 October 2020Verified PurchaseI never quite knew how this book was going to end and I loved that. The characters are complex and rich with detail. The story is heartfelt and will make you laugh and cry. I felt the story is realistic in that the events that occurred were painful at times but led to a happier ending than it would have been without the trials.
I listened to the audible version and loved the voice actors. They brought so much life to the story.
- Reviewed in Australia on 17 June 2021Verified PurchaseI am a BIG fan of Penelope Ward, I almost have her whole collection sitting in my bookshelf. She was one of the very first authors I stumbled upon when I ventured into the world of romance books. Now, when I saw that she released a new book I just had to have it. So without even reading the reviews, I purchased my very own paperback copy. Upon reading the blurb I was super excited to begin reading as I absolutely love the next-door neighbour/ single mother trope.
The story is centred around our two main characters Carys - like Paris, her 6-month-old daughter Sunny and Deacon, the very handsome next-door neighbour.
Both Carys and Deacon are kindred spirits with tragic pasts, who when they first meet have no idea how much they share in common. But despite all the heartache and troubles, they managed to turn a beautiful life-affirming friendship into love.
I want to note that I absolutely adored the fact that this book featured diversity. You don’t find too many books these days straying from stock standard characters. This was a major win in my book. It also contained a powerful message about love and acceptance and re-enforced the saying that the only disability in life is a bad attitude.
I absolutely adore the characters and especially the relationship between Deacon and Sunny. That man had the ability to bring me to my knees with his kind heart and sexy smirk.
If you are familiar with any of Penelope’s previous works you know to expect the unexpected as we are well aware she loves to throw in a twist, so be warned.

- Reviewed in Australia on 9 November 2020Verified PurchaseCarys as in Paris, is a 24yr old, ex-ballet dancer and single mother. Her daughter Sunny has down syndrome. Her next door neighbour Deacon, is a hot single 29yr, who Carys becomes friends with. He has relationship issues and other issues after having a car accident when he was in college.

Everyone needs to read this book, immediately.
I binged it in one day, I couldn’t put it down.
Happy reading 😉
- Reviewed in Australia on 19 December 2020Verified PurchaseThe internal dialogue became irritatingly drawn out, I found myself skimming and just reading the actual dialogue between the characters. Enjoyed the beginning but just too much obvious and repetitive waffle after the halfway mark.

5.0 out of 5 stars Coup de coeur !

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing
Verified PurchaseThis was such an amazing, realistic read! Loveable characters, brilliant, believable pacing and such maturity. I adored the characters' behaviour and attitude towards Sunny. That might sound weird, but once you read the book you'll understand. I think it's right that people go into it with no expectation and discover what's what for themselves as it reaffirms that the general assumptions we make about characters (and people in general!) aren't needed and don't actually matter. It's such a pleasant and realistic representation. I loved the characters and even found myself respecting one particular character later on in the book, who at first I didn't think was worth it. Again, this just added so much pleasant realness to these characters and it was beautiful! Usually, everything and everyone is about constant drama or the plot only being the way it is to fuel hate or add shock value, but this was so so enjoyable and mature. The romance and slow burn of Deacon and Carys' relationship was hot! This has definitely been one of my favourite reads of 2020 and I know for sure I'll be re-reading it many times. Penelope Ward is such a talented author and I know she'll always bring her A game to her novels. Simply amazing! 💜

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful story with laughs and tears
Verified PurchaseCarys is a single Mom, a former ballerina who lives across from Deacon who works from home and entertains the ladies often and loudly. When Carys confronts him about the noise they strike up a quick and easy friendship. But both of them are hiding their intense attraction to the other. Deacon is also something of a baby whisperer able to get Sunny, Carys's daughter to stop crying by holding her. One night they cross the line and things get complicated. This is a book with a lot of depth beyond the hot and steamy love story. It's about second chances in life and recognizing that they might be better than where you originally planned for.
