They say opposites attract, but in this case, they might just combust . . .
HEATHER
Hermosa Beach seems to be the place for throwing together unlikely opposites.
My rooster Rowdy and his new crush, Pixy the goat.
Me and the obnoxiously cocky cowboy from Texas . . .
But unlike Rowdy and Pixy, there’s no way I’m going to fall for David Strickland.
Nope. Not gonna happen. I could never be with a man so completely opposed to everything I believe . . . no matter how hot he is.
DAVID
There couldn’t be two people more different than the beautiful little tree hugger and rooster rescuer Heather and me.
We can’t agree on anything, except that we disagree on everything—at some times more heatedly than other times. And believe me, things are starting to heat up between us, in more ways than one.
She's the last thing I expected to find at an animal shelter in California. But now I found her, I have no intention of letting her go.
I just have to get her on board with that plan.

It all started in first grade when Cat Johnson won the essay contest at Hawthorne Elementary School and got to ride in the Chief of Police's car in the Memorial Day Parade...and the rest, as they say, is history. As an adult, Cat generally tries to stay out of police cars and is thrilled to be writing for a living. She has been published under a different name in the Young Adult genre, but released her first romance in 2006.
Today, she is a NY Times & USA Today best-selling, award-winning author of contemporary romance. A promo ho, she's sponsored real live bull riding cowboys and promoted romance using bologna.
A girl house-sitting for one of her bosses finds a rooster on the beach and rescues him.
A pet-food-making chicken farmer from Texas takes him off her hands.
Not to turn him into dog food, but to live happily ever after on his buddy's farm!
That's our hilarious start to this great romance!
I just adored reading this.
Heather and David first meet and argue-flirt at a gas station and then they meet again at the animal shelter. Where we also meet our favorite fictional goat again. Pixie from Cocky Bastard! LOL!
From there it's more flirting and arguing and Heather helping David with marketing for his farm and then there's reality televison ... and so much more.
Just read it. I loved it!
Such a sweet and sexy and funny and beautiful romance!
I wouldn't mind finding this on Netflix one day soon!
MOTHER CLUCKER was such an adorable & funny chicken-farmer-meets-Hollywood-ish love story! Run to your nearest amazon for your own David - this one is MINE!
Cocka-doodle-doooo mother cluckers! Whilst this is part of the Cocky Hero Club world, it is totally a standalone - and a fund and enjoyable one at that.
Heather and David butt heads (but aren't buttheads) from the minute they met,and it is a sure fire sign that opposites do attract.
And who would have guessed that a rooster could bring true love lol.
David is kinda grumpy when it comes to Heather. Heater is full on hate for David. But beneath all that, you can feel the attraction between them, that push/pull that is going to not just create sparks, but a full on fire.
I loved seeing my favourite fictional goat again - it's been a while since I read Cocky Bastard, and Pixy is the best. I have wanted a goat ever since reading that book lol.
Mother Clucker is a rom-com that had me turning each page, needing to know what our lovelies were up to next.
OH, and now, to go with the goat I have wanted for years, I also want a rooster to be its best friend.
Mother Clucker by Cat Johnson is the story of David and Heather. This book is a part of the Cocky Hero Club, but it can be a standalone book. Heather is a PR consultant who is house sitting in California for one of her well off bosses. David is a true Texan who has come to California for business along with vising his friend. Heather and David first meeting isn't so great when they both have a head butting contest. Fate steps in and they end up meeting again which David already knows that he isn't letting this women go now that he found something he didn't even knew he wanted. Heather has to work through some issue of prejudgement with David. Of course Rowdy the Rooster has his part in this book and does some scene stealing. This was a fun, hot read and cute for us animal lovers!
I am loving these books so far. Not sure how I went through life not knowing that the Cocky Hero Club existed.. but I'm in it for life now.
Mother Clucker was filled with joy, laughter, and some rooster love. Enter Rowdy - my favorite rooster ever. Heck, might be the only rooster I've met in a book but Rowdy made things a bit more interesting and dare I say - fun? Cocky little shit.
Oh, and this book is filled with actual romance as well. It all started with a little run in at the gas station. Sparks flew and so did the bantering between Heather and David. I definitely enjoyed everything that they we went through romantically because it just made me smile.
Of course they did have their little drama issues but it quickly passed by them. In the end, I'm glad that everything worked out and now I can't wait for my next book from this series.
A feel-good romantic comedy, featuring my favourites from COCKY BASTARD - Chance and Aubrey, and Pixie the goat!!! Heather and David’s story was an easy and enjoyable read with plenty of fun moments. Great addition to the CHC world.
Mother Clucker is one of those reads where I was unsure about my rating. On the one hand, it was super addictive. On the other hand, it didn’t quite have the depth I would have liked. Things were fun, but they played out quickly. I enjoyed it, but I had hoped for a wee bit more. Hence, a three-star rating.
I think my mixed feelings come largely from the fact this was a short read, and I much prefer longer stories. It was perfect for something quick and enjoyable, but I very much believe this could have been much more had it been a longer story.
All in all, an addictive read, if not quite enough for me
This is my third read in the Cocky Hero Club and I have to say, so far this was one of my favourite stories which is impressive as I am normally not a fan of animal stories per se but this one had me laughing at parts and I thought the use of "chicken language" throughout the story was very clever. Mother Clucker starts off with our female Heather who is having a crazy day and running late for work when she stops to fill up her car at the petrol station , of course it's one of those please pre-pay which we all hate and find a nuisance. While at the petrol station , she sees a hunky cowboy who looks out of place in his big truck and cowboy boots in LA. They have a quick encounter and go their separate ways. The cowboy is our "cocky" character David Strickland who is in town to try and get some good publicity by doing good deeds for his family business Strickland Feed. He has approached an animal shelter run by Aubrey and her husband Chance. Heather ends up house-sitting for her boss's friend when she spots a loose rooster whom she later names Rowdy. Heather takes it to the animal shelter where she runs into the cowboy David. The pair have this fiery banter going on and eventually we have sparks flying when Heather visits David where he is staying at his friend Drew's chicken farm for playdates with Rowdy. As Heather is in PR , she decides to help David when she starts to fall in love with him and learns the truth about what happened with his family's business. What happens though when David has to rush back for an emergency and Heather believes he has ghosted her and moved on ? Was her possible dream for a romance over before it even properly began as they are from two different cities - LA and Texas ? Give Mother Clucker by Cat Johnson a read to find out more and who knows , this might just be a book you crow about to all your friends. If you loved the Cocky series by Penelope Ward and Vi Keeland, then don't forget to check out the wonderful array of titles published in the Cocky Hero Club World.
This is the first book that I've read by this author and I really didn't know what to expect, I enjoyed this book. This book is a real opposites attract and is a Rom Com romance.
Heather and David are so different, they don't get along and there banter is non stop hilarious. David wasn't looking for anything like what he found in Heather and now he has found her he isn't going to let her go. David is so different from what Heather wants and his views are different but inside she is also determined not to fall for a cocky man.
This two are brought together by the animals and it's so funny to read. The characters we're so great that the author did a fantastic job writing them that I couldn't get enough. They don't seem to get along on anything but the connection between them both and the back and forth is so strong that the heat gets hotter between them.
I always love books that have epilogue as I feel like it always adds that something extra special to the story. This author has written this book great and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.
This book is another great addition in the Cocky Hero Club Series and I cant wait to read the next installment.
Thank you to the author and publishers for allowing me to read an early copy of this book. ARC provided in exchange for an honest review. This book is expected to be released 17th May 2020
4 star review Mother Clucker (Cocky Hero Club) by Cat Johnson
Mother Clucker is part of The Cocky Hero Club inspired by Cocky Bastard from Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward. Having loved that book, I was intrigued by the blurb and could not wait to read and review, particularly since Cat Johnson is a new author to me.
Set in Hermosa Beach, a rooster named Rowdy and Pixie the goat, what more could you need to want to dive in? This is Heather and David’s story and it was an such a good read. Heather and David could not be more opposite if they tried and I loved that angle of their relationship. This story although it had a little angst, also had humour and romance, particularly thanks to Rowdy the rooster which just added an extra layer to the story.
It was an entertaining fun read that left me with a smile on my face
Reading Mother Clucker by Cat Johnson was just what I needed! 5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!
This story was just adorable! Any story that can incorporate cute animals in to it is a win for me! Plus, we get the story of David and Heather; definite opposites with immediate attraction. The best part, though, is the fact that they were brought together by a stray rooster, that Heather found on the side of the road and names Rowdy 💜.
Best line from ANY book I’ve ever read.....’A man and a cock walk into a shelter...’. Does it get any funnier??
I can’t say enough about Mother Clucker. It had me laughing aloud and drawn in to the romance from page one. It was a quick and easy read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I 100% recommend reading this book immediately.
If just that line doesn't make you want to download this book then you will miss out on the best romantic comedy's I have read so far this year! Who wouldn't fall in love with Rowdy the rooster all ruffled big red feathers who likes to get down and dirty with the chickens or the fact that the loveable Rowdy has taken a shine to Pixy the goat!
In fact David Strickland could in fact be the human form of Rowdy he has some of the same attributes - hunky cowboy who loves getting a raise out of Heather the woman who rescued good ole Rowdy from the beach. But David is only California for a short time trying to turn around some very bad publicised that his family business endured by donating a large amount of money and animal feed to a animal rescue shelter and spending some time with his best friend Drew who happens to run a chicken farm that David uses! What he wasn't expecting was meeting Heather the girl who drives a hybrid and is intend on saving the environment and chickens!
Heather works for a marketing and pr firm which she loves and the added bonus is that for a month she gets to house sit for one of her bosses right on the beach life couldn't be better. But from the moment she meets David he just drives her up the wall - if only he hadn't opened his mouth or got into that big gas guzzling truck she could have lived with the dream she had built around the hot cowboy she first saw at a gas station from his cowboy hat to his cowboy belt to his cowboys he was just the fantasy Heather needed to keep her happy at night. But know when she rescued Rowdy and took him to the animal shelter good old David was there and from then on it went down hill!
Follow this wonderful couple as their navigate they were through animals, friends, family misunderstands to get their HEA! You truly will love this book!
"A man and a cock walk into a shelter... Hell of a beginning already, if you asked me"
This book was funny and I really enjoyed reading it. This series is giving me the chance to read so many new authors it's wonderful. These two characters are so opposite to each other one drives diesel Gussler truck and the other a hybrid little thing. Ones in the business of killing animals and then another one only wants to save all the animals.
HEATHER is currently staying at Hermosa Beach in a house that is way beyond her pay rate housesitting when she comes across a runaway rooster. This rooster will lead her life down a new path with some changes to both her work and personal life.
David Strickland as driven from El Paso Texas to California to do some business and catch up with a very good friend when he meets this good looking lady at the service station. She is feisty and sexy and he would love to tame her.
The two end up running into each other again and the sparks will fly as there two different views fuss to give a some very funny and enjoyable reading pleasure.
I think Rowdy the rooster stills the show on this one and his harem of many lovely ladies. There were also many secondary characters that took my interest during this great read.
"Until then.....pucker up, buttercup."
"David Strickland was a lot of thing-obnoxious, dense, misguided, self-centred - but ill-tempered was not one of them. At least not until now. Something had set him off."
I enjoyed this one from beginning to end. Absolutely loved the chicken. Because after all that is what brings these two together. Heather first runs into David at a gas station , he is driving a huge truck she is driving a little car. She insults his truck and drives away. Heather is in town to house sit. She ends up finding a chicken. She takes it to the local animal shelter where she ends up running into David again. He takes the chicken out to his buddies out where he will be able to be happy. These two don't immediately hit it off. But that is what makes this storyline freaking amazing. Watching these two get together was not only funny during some parts but melted the heart. I absolutely loved this storyline and Heather and David. This was a great addition to this series. Cat Johnson is a great writer and this book shows that off.
David tends to have a little jealousy issue, “he’s sure,” I answered for him, getting tired of her being all nice-nice with Drew and not me." I liked this book, I loved David.
Heather is a California girl who tries to reduce her footprint on the environment and has a soft heart when it comes to animals. While housesitting a home on the beach she comes across Rowdy, a rooster, and since she can’t look after him she takes him to the animal shelter.
David is managing the family pet food business due to the health of his father. As a way to help his company’s image he is donating food and funds to the animal shelter when he runs into Heather who he had met earlier that day in a humorous encounter.
He arranges for Rowdy to stay at his friend’s chicken farm and things take off from there. The only thing they have in common is the chemistry between them and they have a talent for knowing exactly how to get a rise out of the other. Let the fun begin!
The interactions between them were both fiery and funny. Their journey wasn’t without its setback but there is no denying they belong together.
I can say with a giggle lingering in the air that Mother Clucker is a must read. The abusrd and yet absolutely believable hilarity is a gold mine. Cat Johnson definitely had fun writing this book!
I had never even heard of Ms. Johnson prior to this book. I saw the title and burst out laughing. From then on, I knew it was going to be fun. Let's just say Mother Clucker has it all.
Sexy, jean wearing cowboys. Everyone's favorite Aussie goat lover. A rowdy rooster. Opposites attract with the Cali girl and Texan farmer. The best part though...the sass. These two are out to get each other. From the first meet, they can't seem to watch their mouths. It only gets better!
I'm still giggling as I type this. Cat Johnson, I look forward to more of your novels. I hope they are all this much fun!
I am so loving these books! I have been introduced to so many wonderful authors, and this is one of them!
This book is so unique, yet so believable at the same time. Heather and David meet at a gas station as Heather comes across a runaway rooster. As you can imagine, these two are opposites in every way possible, but they complete each other so well. There are definitely some over the top, hilarious moments, but they didn't detract at all from the adorable romance between our two main characters!
I do have to say though, Rowdy the rooster stole the show for me! You all will just adore this little fella! ;)
This is definitely a hilarious book that I loved reading! Make sure you pick up your copy on release day!
**I received an ARC of this book and these are my honest opinions!**
When you pair a rooster and a goat together, excitement is about to ensue!
This book is a definite must read, especially if you are a fan of the Cocky World series, originally started by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward. Cat Johnson was a new to me author, but if the rest of her books are anything like this one, I may have found my next new author to read!
Pair a Cali Girl and a Texan Farmer and you somehow get a fabulous opposites attract novel that will have you turning the page quickly to continue reading the story, cursing when you see "the end" and loving the heck out of these two characters who bring life to their words and make this blogger one happy girl.
Aaah I loved this story, animals just give a tale icing on the tip. Rowdy was the main character from the start, this Rooster knew how to.rule the roost and the humans around him. This was a match made in heaven for all involved not just the two main characters, each had strengths and weaknesses that blended well with what the others needed, it was a win, win. I liked that this wasn't to heavy, even the angsty parts were more light hearted, there wasn't really a lot in the way of drama so it was relaxing and a fairly chilled read. Well written with a fast pace, something to just sink into and enjoy.
This is the first book for me from this author, but I really enjoyed it. It's part of the Cocky Hero Club, but read amazing as a stand alone....with a glimpse of one of my favorite cocky heroes - Chance (from Cocky Bastard) and his pet goat Pixy.
Heather and David were the perfect couple. They were antagonists and really had nothing in common in the beginning, but as they got to know each other, they found the perfect common ground and their relationship bloomed from there.
The story moved at a realistic pace making me yearn for things to go faster and yet loving the slow pace they were getting to know each other at. I can't think of a passage of this story I didn't like and I"m so thankful for the chance to get to know a new author through a book series!
*** I voluntarily read a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ***
MotherC by Cat Johnson is a CHCNovel and while part of the CHCworld, can easily be read as a stand-alone. Meet Heather and David. Opposites attract, they say. But these two can't agree on anything , except they disagree on everything. Put a rooster and a goat in the mix, and you have a rom/com of it's finest, with great writing and characters that gave me all the feels.
" MotherC is a standalone story inspired by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward’s CB. It's published as part of the CHClub world, a series of original works, written by various authors, and inspired by Keeland and Ward's New York Times bestselling series."
This is the first book I've read by Cat Johnson and she did not disappoint. David Strickland is trying hard to recoup his companies business after some bad publicity and animals dying and becoming sick from some feed sold by his company. He has traveled out of state to meet up with a company he donated money to and had given free food to as well. On his way he bumps into Heather, who is a spit fire and certainly speaks her mind. She had caught a gorgeous rooster and took it to the same place David had donated funds to. David takes the rooster from her so he can take it to his buddies house. Heather finds out what his business is all about and wants to protect Rowdy (she named the rooster). Let's just say feathers fly and it's a wild ride between Heather and David as they go back and forth throughout the book. You will laugh so much your belly will hurt. This was a perfect story for the Cocky Heros Club. Bravo Cat
This book was absolutely adorable! It was funny, sweet and heartfelt and I loved the underlying story with it too! I was laughing my butt off with it and loved all of the secondary characters. I definitely want to check out more books by Cat Johnson after this!
All in all, Mother Clucker is funny and sweet and highly recommend it! I give it a 4.5 outta 5 stars. CHECK IT OUT!!
PS: Thank you to Cat Johnson, Cock Hero Club, and Give Me Books PR for allowing me an advanced copy of the book to read and review honestly!
This is a fun and flirty book where the main characters David and Heather first meet at a gas station and it’s on with the banter. These 2 then meet again thanks to a rooster where David stakes his claim and Heather just needs to catch up. We then follow them on their journey of falling in love while tied to a cheeky rooster. I thoroughly enjoyed this book from The Cocky Hero Collection but it can be read as a standalone. I received this book as an arc for my honest opinion.
