description~WRITING - PLOT - PACE~
I must say I am enjoying the books this author has been putting out. They are quick super sexy reads. The writing in this one was very well done. The pace was perfect. Like I mentioned it is a fairly quick read, but the story was quite well developed despite the short number of pages. The plot was engaging and kept me turning the pages. The mystery aspect was OK. I figured out who the baddie was right from the start but that didn't take away any of my enjoyment. Last, it was all wrapped up in a sweet ending.

~HERO~
MICHAEL...I loved him. He was smokin' hot. He was super alpha. He knew his way around a belt. He was commanding. He wanted Phoebe right from the start. He did have a bit of a shit for brains moment near the end that had me wondering about his intelligence <--

~HEROINE~
PHOEBE...She was an equally enjoyable character. She was smart. She was feisty. She was all about Michael's brand of kink. Yea, nothing much more to say about her. She was a good heroine.

description

~FAVORITE QUOTE~
“That’s it, baby, come for me. Come for your commander.”

~SECONDARY CHARACTERS~
This one is super light on secondary characters. There are a few here and there that help move the story along but the story is mostly focused on the hero and heroine.

~HEAT LEVEL~
Medium. Depends on what type of books you read regularly. I felt this one was maybe a bit less steamy than a few of this author's other books. That said, we still get some hot sex scenes. Spanking (hand and belt). Rough sex. The couple had good on page chemistry.

~ANGST LEVEL~
Low. As in there was basically none (IMO). There is a murder targeting Phoebe. So that adds a bit of angst. And Phoebe isn't the best at following Michael's directions. There was no OW or OM drama and neither characters sexual past is mentioned at all.

~IN THE END~
I enjoyed this one a lot. This author has quickly become a MUST READ for me. Good writing. Sexy plots. Likable characters. It was a great way to spend a couple hours. Therefore yours truly is giving this one two thumbs up.description

ARC-BOOK REVIEW
Release Date-27/2/18.

So Zoe Blake Is fast becoming a go-to author for me.
Her reads may be quick but I find they deliver every time.
And Defying Him for me was no different.
So this book has a little bit of everything and though low on angst and lacking major secondary characters it still packed a mega punch.
The mystery and atmospheric unease throughout more than making up for the short length here and I really did enjoy this tale.
So Phoebe is an investigative journalist working undercover as an English professor at the military academy at Buzzards Bay.
lieutenant Colonel Michael Lawson / The Commander is the marine brought in by the Navy to act as head and flush out the murderer that is using the academy as a camouflage for there criminal actions.
Sparks fly straight from the get-go between these two and their chemistry together was certainly sizzling hot.
I can always rely on a Zoe Blake story to get my pulse raised, Defying him was no exception perhaps maybe a little less graphic than some of her other works but it was by no means low on the heat factor.
I loved the overall mystery conveyed here and this was such an easy and at times, creepy read.
Both Phoebe and Michael were extremely likeable individuals that were easy to relate to.
My only major criticism here was an action of Michaels near the end.

 photo download_zpsazbbgjw5.jpg

Shaking my head in utter disbelief here.

disbelief-dean-happy-head-shake (1)

That was definitely a bit of a brain fart moment.
So despite that one issue, I did enjoy The rest of this book it was an enthralling quick read that I am happy to recommend.
I was provided with an ARC of "Defying Him" By the author of which I have reviewed voluntary.
All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

Once again this author delivers another fantastic thriller that is also a very steamy read! I'm so grateful that I got to read this book early. I always look forward to read what Zoe comes up with next. I highly recommend this author.

This is short story about Phoebe, and Michael. The chemistry between the characters are so hot! Michael is definitely an alpha male. I was totally swooning over his dominance.

Steamy, erotic and spellbinding, Ms. Blake delivers a tightly written tale with engaging characters. Full disclosure, I did not read the blurb. Since I am familiar with this author's writing, I went in cold. I enjoy it better not knowing what is going on. This book starts out with a heart pumping scene with filled with danger. I thought at first, Phoebe Wilson was a ninny of a female running and hiding from her stalker. I was so wrong. As the story unfolds, Ms. Blake takes us on a suspense ride punctuated with panty moistening erotic scenes.

Phoebe is an investigative reporter who is determine to make it to the top. Working at a small newspaper, she's completely a few dangerous assignments. When a request comes down from the top to determine what is going on in a military academy, Phoebe jumps for this big break. What she doesn't realize is, how much danger she places herself in due to her looks.

From an erotic perspective, I really enjoyed this book. Michael Lawson is a commanding male who exudes a dominant nature. His brash direct talk is surprising given today's sensitive PC environment. But what he says, because he is handsome and a good man... is so bloody hawt. The naughty things he wants to do with the mischievous Phoebe are right up my kink alley. Ms. Blake does an excellent job of building up the sexual tension and then letting it burst over with a fiery climax. Love it.

From a plot perspective, the story is cohesive and well done. It may have been a bit heavy handed in identifying the villain. What I liked is how Phoebe dived into the role of being a teacher. The nod to Dead Poet's Society touched me. The way the characters interacted felt so real. The descriptions of the academy is clear, down to the uniforms the students wear. Entwining the story with a local legend helped add another layer of intrigue to the tale. It is nicely done.

The ending threw me just a little because of how Phoebe was captured. I was a bit incredulous as what Commander Michael did. I had to re-read it a couple times. Totally rookie mistake and I just can't reconcile this with Michael's careful character. This did throw me out of the story a bit. Still, this plot device seemed to be needed to tie of loose ends and bring the story into a happy conclusion.

This erotic novel is recommended to readers who enjoy a commanding male, a bit of intrigue and happily ever after.

* I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Defying Him by Zoe Blake is a full length, stand alone romance novel.
Meet Phoebe Wilson. She´s a journalist and investigates who terrorizes the military academy of Buzzards Bay.
Michael Lawson, Lieutenant Colonel with a dark deep voice ´ll never accept defiance. The harder Phoebe fights him, the more determined he becomes to bend her to his will. Fore- and backwards.
Michael is atypical alpha male, rude, blunt and crude.
The story is well written and contains many twists and unexpected turns. I enjoyed reading Phoebe and Michale´s story and give 4 stars.

Defying him was a quick and sexy story with an underlying suspense/mystery theme. I enjoyed Michael and Phoebe's spirited banter, fiery chemistry and back and forth push and pull.

When a murder takes place at an elite naval academy school investigative reporter Phoebe Wilson goes undercover to get the story. But what happens when she makes a connection with the dominant and sexy Lieutenant Colonel Michael Lawson and he becomes suspicious of her true intentions.

I love that Phoebe gave as good as she got and she was a sassy and strong heroine. Michael likewise was alpha to a Tee. I love that he was sexy and dominant but also caring. While this story was insta-as all heck it was still a good palette cleanser and in-between story. 3.5 stars! ~Ratula

OH, BABY, I’M A MARINE. WE DON’T DO—NICE.

Once again, the talented wordsmith, Ms. Zoe Blake, has spun a tale that takes us, her readers, on a spine-tingling murder mystery with a three hundred and fifty-year-old legend that has come to life in present day. The story has mystery, suspense, murder, superstitions, legends, terror, angst, secrets, and yes, a romance that is down and dirty, hot and heavy, with raw, edgy panty ripping passion. He may be an officer, but don’t mistake him for a gentleman.

Two young women have been murdered near the Puller Military Academy in Buzzard Bay, Massachusetts, a building that had once been an old monastery and for the last, nearly one hundred years has served as a training school for the Navy and Marine officer program. Phoebe Wilson will be assigned by her newspaper, The Ledger, to enter the campus as a literary professor and try and investigate if the Navy is responsible for covering up the deaths.

The plot will have Phoebe arriving in Buzzard Bay under the name of Eustace Pringle to gain admittance, claiming it is an old family name, but request to go by Phoebe. What she did not know until she arrives is how closely she resembles the two murder victims, one a teacher, the other a midshipman’s girlfriend.

The story has many twists and turns and will keep the reader on the edge-of-their-seat as harrowing events unfold. The legend of two monks to who became lost in the woods while searching for the Algonquin Indians and when finally found, one was dead, and the other was mad and had resorted to cannibalism. Legend has it that then the Mad Monk was burned alive and his ashes scattered. Now on October 25th each year, they have a bond fire and burn an effigy of the Mad Monk.

Phoebe is in danger, so many strange things have happened, that she hasn’t shared with Commander Lawson. Is her story worth her life? Who is chanting that horrible nursery rhyme? “Hush now, Phoebe, do not fear. Never mind, Phoebe, the Mad Monk is near.”

There is an underlying chemistry between Lieutenant Colonel Michael Lawson and Phoebe; even if she wants to deny it, he won’t let her. When he catches her where she doesn’t belong, he will use that to his advantage.

“A gentleman would retreat from the room or at least turn around until a lady could cover herself. “ “I’m no gentleman. I’m a Marine. We only know how to advance.” “No more games, princess. I’ve won the battle, and I want my prize.”

“The minute you walked through my office door you became mine, which means you’re mine to protect. I don’t care if I have to toss you over my shoulder and drag you back to my place kicking and screaming, but rest assured, baby, you are spending the night with me—in my bed—under my protection. You got that?” “There will be no turning back. Once I take what’s mine, I keep it.”

“In the span of a heartbeat, she was quite possibly falling in love with an arrogant, overbearing, poetry-reciting, passionate, amazing man.”

Has Phoebe’s presence at the academy placed her life in jeopardy to uncover a story? Is it someone on staff, a midshipman, or was it a drifter that committed the two heinous murders? Will the Commander be able to keep her safe and will they catch the murderer?

I have never been disappointed in any story by Ms. Blake. There are bits and pieces of this tale that really do revolve around legend and parts that are fictitious. One thing that is true, the story is full of steamy erotic scenes, a few spankings, a dominant Marine, and a feisty woman, that when they get together, there is plenty of raw passion within the explicit sex scenes.

Outstanding dark romance with mystery and chills! Loved the main male character Lt. Colonel Michael Lawson, aka the Commander.. He's so perfectly alpha, bossy, sexy, protective, and maddeningly arrogant! Phoebe is awesome, she's fiesty, smart, modern, and unshakable. She's out to track down and uncover a murderer, and heaven help Michael if he gets in her way, even if he needs to tie her down to save her from herself!

Engaging and intriguing,,,

Wow..the opening chapter of this book was about as menacing and creepy as a murder mystery can be....I was immediately drawn into the plot....

Phoebe and Michael are convincing and interesting main characters....their sexual attraction to each other is instantaneous and as the plot develops so does their hot, passionate affair...he is all alpha; demanding obedience from a very smart, independant and sassy young woman..the sparks were destined to fly right from the start...although I really liked this couple I would say their attraction and relationship was mostly physical, and I would like to have felt more of an emotional connection between them...

I really liked the premise of the story; particularly the fact that both the main characters are fundamentally on the same mission but with very different approaches and methods....the author has a refreshingly easy-to-read style of writing which made the whole experience so much more enjoyable..

This is a whodunnit with ritual murders and a race to uncover the culprit before anymore lives are lost.. the plot twists and turns its way to a satisfying and satisfactory conclusion...in summary this was a well written, suspenseful and sexy read that kept me engaged and intrigued throughout.. Zoey Blake has done it again and delivered another solid suspenseful read that is also a sizzling romance. The chemistry between Michael and Phoebe is intense, delightful and darkly romantic. I found myself re-reading this romantic suspense read.
When a murder takes place at an elite naval academy school , reporter Phoebe Wilson is sent undercover to get the scoop on whats going on and to see what the Navy is hiding. But will she be able to get past the dominant and hot Lieutenant Colonel Michael Lawson ? He is suspicious of her and what she is really up to , at the Naval Academy.
All I can say is, get ready for some seriously steamy and sexy times ahead. There is action, intrigue, murder, sexual tension and passionate interludes. You don’t want to miss one single second of a thrilling, romantic read by Ms. Blake. I enjoyed every moment and didn’t want Michael and Phoebe’s story to end.

I have a feeling that my definition of dark is much darker than others. There is no dubious or non-consent in this book, nor is the hero an anti-hero, dangerous or in any way truly threatening. Michael is one super sexy, alpha male but if Phoebe had ever said 'no' he would have respected that.

I enjoyed Phoebe and Michael's story, this is a well written romantic suspense with an engaging plot. The pace was good and held my attention throughout the book and the style of writing made this really easy to read. Any shorter and I would have classed this as a novella as it took me just over 2 hours to read.

I liked both main characters, Phoebe and Michael certainly had some amazing chemistry and the book sizzles nicely. Michael is very dominant and whilst it appears that he pushes Phoebe, she can't get her legs open fast enough at times. Had she wanted to leave or stop Michael's actions in anyway she could easily have walked out, phoned for help etc. Again this is why I can't label this book as dark - Phoebe is a very happy and willing participant in all events that occur. Well that and the fact that this is quite a 'light' read for me, personally I felt it didn't have a lot of emotional intensity. That doesn't mean it wasn't a good read or that I didn't enjoy it, just that it didn't leave me with a book hangover and my feelings pummelled.

This is the first book I have read by this author and it is enough that I would definitely read more work by her in future.

I picked this one up because its short and tomorrow is release day. I have read another book by this author and I didn't like it. So I was pleasantly surprised that I really enjoyed this. I liked the first half*ish part better - that part I couldn't put it down. The second half wasn't as quite as good for me. I loved Michael he was freaking hot! Even with his stupid ass mistake at the end.... Who would do that in that situation?

As for the warning on this book in the description:
Warning: This book is edgy, dark and dirty. If the possibility of having your boundaries tested does not appeal to you, then please do not purchase.

I didn't find it dark or edgy and I'm not really sure what boundaries would be tested. I dunno maybe I'm jaded from reading so many books. Maybe a little tiny bit of dub con and some rough sex is the boundaries thing? It was dirty but I so wanted it to be dirtier and that's saying something because my tastes these day tend to be for less sex.

Fast pace. Easy to read. Sexy with dash of suspense and action. Super sexy with too hot marine officer!
Didn't read the blurb for this book, i was super excited to read this book, i read it in one sitting.
A reporter, investigation journalist, Phoebe land on a murder case in a naval academy. Going undercover as a professor, she didn't just find a new case. She meet the commander.
Michael is a man use to man following his orders. He is the commander. And when this suspicious looking too gorgeus supposed to be a professor stand in front of him, he know he wants her bend over on his desk.
With the murderer still looming, they have to catch who ever that is before Phoebe become the next victim.
I love Zoe Blake books. But something in 50% ish and 80% ish just bugging me. What did he heard? Why oh why did he leave her?

This was weird. I mean extra weird, but not sexually just odd. So essentially Phoebe is an journalist who goes undercover as an English professor at a military academy. You have to over look the references and how easily she got the job because lets be honest that would never happen in real life and just focus on the story lol I know what the hell is the point right?? But after the books I had tried to read before this I was damn determined to finish this one. The sex is hot, but the characters didn't do it for me... it just wasn't believable. And I have read books with big blue aliens if that tells you anything lol.

Oh my holy goodness....this book is dark and edgy and filled with passion. Defying him is the story of Michael and Phoebe. She is a journalist who specializes in going undercover and discovering the truth of some of the toughest stories ever written. Michael is a Marine and the new Commander of the Naval Academy at Buzzards Bay. Here at the Naval Academy there have been two murders of women in the woods surrounding the academy. There is also the legend of the Mad Monk to deal with too but I am going to let you discover this one for yourself. This book is a quick read and will have you on the edge of your seat at times either from the explosive attraction between Phoebe and Michael and there is also the question of who is committing these murders and is Phoebe next??

You do not want to miss the escape into the world of a hotter than sin Marine, a journalist and a mystery. You will not be disappointed.

This is a dark and mysterious book with some hot romance in between. Investigative journalist Phoebe Wilson loves her job and she is determined to get to the bottom of the murders at the military college in Buzzards Bay. She goes undercover as an assistant English professor to get more information on the murders. She encounters Lieutenant Colonel Michael Lawson the new head master and there is an instant attraction. Michael is a dominating person and the more Phoebe defies him the more determined he is to pursue her. He knows Phoebe is hiding something and will stop at nothing to reveal the truth.

Ms Blake held my attention from the very first chapter. I couldn't put this book down.

Yes, yes, f**king yes! FINALLY, Zoe, you delivered the story I wanted to read.

Michael was the perfect mix of sexy as hell Marine, possessive as hell alpha, and demanding commander--in and out of the "bedroom"--not that they had sex in the bedroom all that often.

Phoebe was intelligent, ballsy, and wasn't all wishy-washy like some of the Zoe Blake characters I've read before.

I also enjoyed the suspense in this one; it added depth to the story, which only made the emotion and attraction between the H/h all the more believable.

Another aspect I enjoyed was that this book didn't have the weird UGH of daddy kink (Papa's Prey or Daddy's Home), and it had more chemistry than Dark Deception.

Well done, Zoe. You've got a winner here!

I was given a ARC of this book to read for my honest review. I would have given it 5 stars, but spanking is NOT my thing.

This book was more than romance. It was definitely suspenseful and I loved it! I couldn't put this book down and often found myself talking to Phoebe, saying "Girl, that's not a smart idea..."

By not listening to the sexy man in a Marine's uniform... that's how people get killed. And that's not a spoiler, I promise. That's just in general.

The sex was smoking. HOT. The chemistry between Phoebe and Commander Lieutenant Colonel Michael (I've forgotten the last name) is palpable. Such a great connection between the two.

This book is on the shorter side, it took me a couple hours to read it. I had to force myself to put it down last night, though, because I had to get up early to go to work. This is the second book of hers that I have read and I absolutely loved it.

What made it four stars instead of five is that it just didn't pack that emotional punch that I absolutely love. The one that has me feeling right along with the characters. I feel that if Zoe Blake tried, she could totally make that happen.

I can't wait to read the next book of hers!

Zoe Blake has written some really hot and steamy romance reads. This is just another one in her large repertoire. But this one has something different. She has added in a suspenseful murder mystery on top of her normal hot and steamy sexy, sexy stuff. It makes for an incredibly hot, twisted, and thrilling ride.

Puller Academy has had 2 young women who have been ritually murdered. Journalist Phoebe Wilson's boss asks her to go undercover at the academy because he thinks that the Navy is hiding something. So she shows up as the new assistant professor in English, under the name Eustace Pringle.

When she gets there, she meets Marine Lieutenant Colonel Michael Lawson, who tells her to call him Commander. He was sent there by the board of directors so that he could get to the bottom of the murders and fix any security issues. When Pheobe gets there and he sees that she's a beautiful young woman who strongly resembles the murder victims, he does what he can to scare her away. The problem is that Phoebe is stubborn and she can smell a story from a mile away. She's done other undercover work and she knows that she can do this.

Michael and Phoebe have a strong attraction to each other immediately, and that's pretty hot. It's not an instalove situation, but a definite instalust. Frankly, a hot Marine in uniform? Especially if he's in dress blues? Yeah, I can't blame Pheobe at allllll for being all hot and bothered for him.

The first chapter of this book is spooky and creepy, and oh holy f@^&k, did it really set the mood for this whole book. I wasn't sure where it was going to go after that chapter, but it was awesome, and definitely, the best way to start out this book. I wish I could give this 100 stars, because that's how many it needs.

Defying Him was my first book by author Zoe Blake, this sexy story was a quick and exciting read with tons of sexual chemistry and witty banter from both the main characters. There’s a hint of suspense thrown in for good measure to and makes the story quite enthralling.
I loved the back and forth between Phoebe and Michael, allowing both to show their true depths. Phoebe wasn’t scared to stand up to Michael, she didn’t let him intimidate her and that just made her more attractive to him.
Hot, sexy, and full of witty humor, I enjoyed every bit of this book.

Investigative journalist Phoebe Wilson finds herself undercover at a military academy after two women were murdered. Lieutenant Colonel Michael Lawson is sent into the academy to see if he can find the murderer. There’s only one obstacle in his way...the gorgeous feisty Phoebe.

This has a great storyline. I absolutely loved every word of it. The hot scenes were oh so hot. These two characters were fabulous together. Awesome read. Can’t wait to read more from this author.

As usual, Zoe brings a great book to life. The commander Michael is a hot alpha male that makes you fall for him from the very first page he is on.

Phoebe is a journalist that is sent in undercover to try to find out who is killing women at the Academy but when she meets Michael the chemistry comes off the pages.

This story has mystery, suspense, secrets, scary moments, and finally romance. Really enjoyed it. I voluntarily read an advance reader copy for my honest review.

This was a pretty solid erotic read with a suspense story line. Honestly, I really think this should've been full-length.

It had a good plot line and the MCs had off-the-charts chemistry. But since it was a good read, nothing really dug it's heels in and a lot of development was sacrificed and the love happened in a blink.

Still a quick and hot read though.
