Alta Hensley is a USA Today bestselling author of dark romance where the villain always gets the happily ever after.

Twisted, clever, and occasionally unhinged, her books deliver morally gray anti-heroes, sharp-tongued heroines, and happily ever afters that taste even sweeter after a little ruin. With a signature blend of grit, wit, and heat, Alta’s stories prove one thing: villains deserve love too.

Alta lives on the foggy coast of Oregon with her husband, two daughters, and a pair of dogs who think they’re in charge. When she’s not writing redemption for the irredeemable, she’s walking the coastline or sipping craft beer in eccentric little bars that feel like they belong in her books.

Once again, Ms. Alta Hensley has penned a story that is spine-tingling, on-the-edge-of-your-seat, I can’t look, but I can’t look away page-turning tale. There is a unique cast of characters, some you will hate, some will have you hot and bothered, and some, you just aren’t sure about. The characters and situations are explicated detailed. The story is not for those who want wine and roses with a sweet storyline. The story is raw, edgy, dirty, painful, intense, explicit and erotic.

Her grandparents raised Anita Kyle in a rundown mobile home behind a closed gas station in a hole-in-the-wall desert town in Nevada. She is all alone now and looks out for an elderly lady, Virgie, the only person she can even call a friend. The only color in her life is the colorful tattoos running down the right side of her body. Virgie decides to send Anita to New Orleans, giving her a chance to find something new in her life. With the help of a housemate, she will be hired to work at Spiked Roses.

The Spiked Roses is an exclusive private gentleman’s club with a very wealthy clientele. Men who enjoy the best in alcohol, cigars, and indulging in various proclivities and taboos, the club has private venues in an area called The Tasting Room, where private contracts are made between the men and women. The deals are contracts, spelled out in agreed upon terms, proclivities, time frame and payments, signed and seals with a drop of blood. It definitely isn’t for everyone. It is dark, depraved, humiliating, and the girls are giving consent to a set timeframe at the mercy of the men buying them.

The plot will have Anita leaving Nevada and arriving in New Orleans, and getting a job immediately at the Spiked Roses, a very exclusive private gentlemen’s club. But these men are no real gentlemen when it comes to their various proclivities. Kenneth Saxon, an attorney, and one of the club owners is impressed with the blunt honesty when Anita applies. “Who was this woman? She was very cool and collected, and yet so very naïve. Parts of her were hard, and I could easily see parts of her were soft. She was a jagged edge that I wanted to touch, even if it made me bleed.”

The Tasting Room will be hosting a very dark opening, with very few girls willing to participate, and newbie Anita is refusing to back down. When Marco Nunez purchases her by consensual contract, it will be out of Kenneth’s hands. She has been warned by Tennessee to read and understand the contract thoroughly. “You will read the contract carefully. And I mean carefully. If you feel you can't do something, you need to negotiate it out of the contract right away. When I allow you to leave with the buyer, I need to be sure that you are going into the situation with your eyes completely wide open and consensually entering the darkness.”

Anita negotiates the deal, but the cruelty of Marco is more than she can take and she will escape after only hours in his home. Kenneth’s reputation and the club are on the line and rather than let Marco’s henchmen catch up with her; he will retrieve her himself. It will be a battle of wills as he finds her and takes her back to New Orleans. She has two choices, to return the one hundred thousand dollars, or continue for two weeks with Marco. She refuses to give back the money, and Kenneth has no choice but to turn her back over to Marco.

The story is full of angst, depression, desperation, depravity, and determination. There is a love-hate status between Kenneth and Anita. Things will turn volatile and physical during their return trip to New Orleans, including spankings, non-consensual and consensual sex. “I craved his control over my body that willingly surrendered. “ “Sometimes you have to stare the devil in the eyes to be able to conquer him. I’ll get past this. I’m going to see it as a nightmare that I have woken from. I’m awake now. It was all a really bad dream.” This is the first book in this series and I look forward to the next one.

This book involves some kink aspects that are a little hard to take. The whole book is based off the premise of a gentleman’s club that contracts out some of their girls to extremely wealthy men with sick and twisted kinks - some of them bordering on the extreme of torture and abuse. While that on its own is hard to read about, it’s not a deal breaker when I read a book. I can continue to read through that knowing something good might be coming at the end. Even the idea that one of these professed “bastards” could fall in love at the end of all this could be believable, but the idea that the abused party can fall in love is a little far fetched. Still, the book was well written and the heroine had a lot of fight in her which fun to read. It’s when she gave up and accepted her fate that I had a problem with. All and all, I’m still giving it 4 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book will definitely not be for everyone as it contains possible triggers. It is steamy & kinky and has a bit of a dark edge.

The book starts off with an introduction to the men who own and run the Spiked Roses club - a club where the members are all men, all very rich and all expect to not hear the word "no". Kenneth is the hero of this book and one of the owners of the club. He is also the lawyer in the group and after one too many law suites against the club, decides that it would be in everyone's best interest to start implementing contracts between couples.

Anita is the heroine who has become stuck in a routine and is in desperate need of a change in her life. But with no money her options are few until someone lends a hand. When she tries to return the favour, Anita agrees to something she didn't fully understand the consequences of.

The road to happiness for Kenneth and Anita is not all sunshine and rainbows and mistakes are made along the way.

Again, I must warn that although this book ends with a hea, it will not be for everyone. Written from a dual pov, it can be read as a standalone.

I love all Hensley's books. This book had just the right amount of edge and sweetness. It borders the noncon line but doesn't go over. Probably not for everyone. Good for those who like Kitty Thomas, Skye Warren, Aleatha Romig etc.

4.0 out of 5 stars Anita and Kenneth’s story .
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 19, 2023
Anita who was brought up by her grandparents in a trailer behind a disused petrol station in the wilds in a place called Muckaluk . Sadly now she’s living there on her own since her grandparents have passed away, Virgie Peterson is her only friend and her employer Anita started looking after her a few years ago as Virgie was elderly and needed help around her home . They had a good relationship and after some advice and a few phone calls made by her Virgie Anita moved to New Orleans …… The Spiked Roses gentleman’s club is a club unlike any other in New Orleans. It’s run by a group of very wealthy influential men and the only way you can get in is through your linage or if you happen to be extremely wealthy . The only females there are the staff who know exactly what goes on, there are rules that the staff must adhere to and they know that the word No is never used . One of the owners is Kenneth Saxon who’s a hot shot wealthy lawyer and is hiring new staff, when Anita arrives at the club for an interview he’s very much attracted to her, he realises that she may be well out her depth in the club but he still hires her . Within the club there’s The Tasting Room , where events are held frequently , the girls who work there know that they can earn life changing money by attending the events there . Sexually anything and everything is on the table in The Tasting Room room but the men must get the consent of their chosen partner in writing which is sealed with blood before any contact is made . When Anita says she wants to attend the event, Kenneth is not happy and although he strongly advises her not too he is powerless to stop her attending , something tells me this is going to end badly ………… In my personal opinion I felt that this had the potential to be a very good story but I felt that it was lacking a bit lacking in the body of the story I couldn’t quite make out Anita. I’ve read a fare few books in this genre but even for me there was one scene in particular between Anita and the man who bought her contract, that even for me was really hard core .

Started out ok but lost it's way somehow. I thought both characters changed their personalities too quickly. There was not enough explanation of why they were the way they were and really Anita was not in a desperate enough situation to warrant her decisions. We kept being told Kenneth was a cold hearted bastard but in fact he was internally struggling with everything he did and the man who did not believe in love was declaring just that in no time. I feel the rest of the books will be the same.
