When my best friend Aubrey asked me to tag along to an event with her, I never could have imagined that it would be the day that my life changed forever.
He’s arrogant and demanding and doesn’t take a hint. Landon Barker, the quarterback for the Hermosa Beach Trojans, is a player on and off of the field. He’s got his sights set on me as his next play, but I see right through him. Aubrey says I’m overreacting, that I should give him a chance. What she doesn’t realize is men like Landon don’t fall for the girl next door. That’s not reality. She got her fairytale, although it was a long road. Not all of us are that lucky.
Landon
She’s a friend of our new kicking coach’s wife. When I ask Chance for her number, he tells me I have to find a way to get it myself.
Nothing when it comes to Emma has been easy. She’s the first woman ever to turn me down, and that won’t do. However, as time passes, it’s about more than that. It’s about her smile, her laugh, and just spending time with her. She thinks I’m a player, and she’s right. What she doesn’t know is that I play to win, and her heart is the ultimate trophy.
New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author Kaylee Ryan has been crowned the Queen of Swoon by her readers. With nearly fifty romance books under her belt, she’s known for penning happily ever afters with heart. When she's not writing, you can find her with a book in her hand or hanging out with her family where she resides in her home state of Ohio.
Hero started chasing the heroine because she was the first woman that told him no when he asked her on a date. At first he just wanted to get her out of his head. I liked the heroine. She was judgy but who wouldn’t judge when a man who is seen all over the tv with different women? and although he said that he didn’t have sex with all the women that were seen with him. Heck I would judge him too. She fought hard but lost. At least she wasn’t wetting herself. I also like how she worked for an animal shelter she won big points just for that alone. They started as friends but of course that still didn’t stopped him from chasing her.
The drama in the end was just ridiculous and up to that point I was going to rated 3 stars but because it was so damn stupid I’m taking 1 star.
It was hard to read the hero. I don’t like cocky men at all. I hate when the men think they are god gift to women and this one just needed to say those words because he thought he was all that. I also got tired of hearing how different the heroine was from all the cleat chasers. I hate how OWs are portrayed in books. I hated the heroine’s best friend. I guess she wanted her friend to end up with a sexually experienced man just like she did. Her book is Cocky Bastard I did not read it nor will I ever.
~Jealous/Possessive hero. 🤦🏻♀️ ~Likeable heroine. ~Ridiculous drama towards the end.
~Unlikeable friends. From both hero and heroine’s side. I hated the hero’s friends who refers to women as “pussies” ~Minor OW/OM drama. ~Faithful after meeting each other. ~Slow burn.
LUCKY BASTARD is a Cocky Hero Club novel and follows Landon, who is QB for the Trojans, and Emma who runs an animal shelter. I absolutely adored their story and Landon had me swooning so many times. I’m loving this Cocky Hero world and look forward to seeing characters that we love from Keeland and Wards books - in this case, it was Chance and Aubrey from Cocky Bastard. Kaylee Ryan is a fabulous author and I’m kicking myself that I’ve never read any of her books before; I’ll definitely be rectifying that situation soon.
What you need to know about Lucky Bastard: ✔ Complete stand-alone ✔ Sassy Heroine ✔ Sexy football player Hero ✔ If you loved Cocky Bastard by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward, you will love Lucky Bastard. You will also get to catch up with Aubrey, Chance, and CJ.
⭐️ 5 "It's Not A Date" Stars ⭐️ Awww, Lucky Bastard was so freaking good! I read it in one sitting and from the first few lines I was totally charmed by Emma and Landon's dynamic! The banter between them was just everything! Ever scene between them, I was entrance by the magnetism they ooze and it had me swooning so hard.
Landon is a star quarterback with a cocky attitude that I couldn’t get enough of. He always has it easy with the girls, but Emma is different. She’s not easily won over by the man, even if their attraction is undeniable. I enjoyed how he works hard to prove her wrong; that he’s more than just a smug athlete wanting a good time. He realizes early on that she’s special and for the first time in his life wants more than an insignificant relationship.
The courtship was so beautiful. The slow progression of their relationship from somewhat animosity to friendship to lovers was so exquisite! I had my heart full of sweet feelings witnessing their lovely romance.
This novel is set in the Cocky Hero World and features Chance and Aubrey from Cocky Bastard by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward. I didn’t have the chance to read their own love story, but Lucky Bastard only made me more intrigued about them.
It had been quite some times since my last read by Kaylee Ryan and I realized pretty early in my read that I missed her stories! She always achieves to create the most amazing romances, balancing humor, sweetness and sexiness! Lucky Bastard was a truly magnificent romance that I highly recommend! You’ll fall for Emma and Landon’s story for sure!!!

When Emma meets Landon (number 18) she shuts him down straight away and Landon can't believe that. Emma is a down to earth sweet women who loved animals and for one she can't have her heart broken and she can't take the chance. Hence why she's turning him down. Landon is the famous hot sexy sports player and could have his pick of women. So meeting Emma at the family outing he can't keep his eyes off her, but she wants none of that. But getting her attention isn't as easy as he thought it would be. Emma is really going to make him work for her attention and he is looking forward to every minute of it.
This was a good story. I think i'm getting the hang of the whole sports romance books. And I have to say I loved the little twists in there too. I loved that even though Emma didn't want to get involved with Landon she couldn't deny she was had some attraction to him. Definitely a story that I really enjoyed ❤ 😊
TOUCHDOWN!!!!! Kaylee Ryan brought the heat and her A-Game with Lucky Bastard!!!
Lucky Bastard is one of many books coming to the Cocky Hero Club (Cocky Hero Club is an all new world inspired by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward's blockbuster New York Times bestselling series of standalones that all began with the smash hit Cocky Bastard.)
About Lucky Bastard:
Swoony and slightly egotistical quarterback, Landon Barker, is about to face the fight of his life, getting the reluctant Emma to go on a date with him.
Emma is the girl next door. When she gives herself to a man, she expects to give herself fully, heart and soul, and she expects her future man to give himself fully to her. She isn’t about to fall to the charm that is Landon barker. Falling for the Trojan’s QB will result in nothing but a broken heart for her and a notch on his bedpost. The ball is in her court. She’s going to make Landon work for her, and she’s going to make it a fight he’s never fought before.
My Thoughts:
Oh my lord!!! Landon is everything I love about a Kaylee Ryan hero! He’s swoony and sexy, but underneath all that ego is a sweet and sensitive side. I loved the fact that this hero puts all his cards on the table and fights for what he wants. In this case he wants Emma and he’s willing to go to battle for her. My god, how is it possible to fall for a fictional character! Every damn time I find myself swoony and swept off my feet. This man may just be my favorite hero of Kaylee’s! I couldn’t get enough!
Emma may have also stolen a piece of my heart! This woman is fierce when it comes to protecting her heart. But some battles are meant to be fought and are meant to be lost. That’s how fate works. Emma puts up one hell of a fight, but it’s nothing compared to Landon’s swoon factor.
Overall, I loved EVERYTHING about Lucky Bastard. I loved these two together. I loved the chemistry and the connection these two share and in the end my heart felt every single moment. I was sad to see this story end, but what a way to go!! I need more heroes like Landon and more heroine’s like Emma in my life!! You all are in for a treat!!! Lucky Bastard by Kaylee Ryan was everything I thought it would be… and so much more! Landon brings the swoon and Emma brings the feisty girl next door vibes in this novel. A definite MUST READ!
Disclaimer: I received an Advance Reader Copy at no cost from the publisher/author. All opinions in my review are my own.
This was such a great story. This is the second book that I have read in the Cocky Hero Club world and so far I am greatly impressed.
This is my first time reading something from this author but I was blown away by Kaylee Ryan's storytelling. I felt so at home in her prose. The writing style was very smooth and inviting. I really loved the plot for this book. The foreshadowing was great and I love how everything connected in the end. I admit that the book started out a little slow for me, but once things got going I was all in.
I loved Emma and Landon. They were both great characters that were so very relatable. It took me a little bit to warm up to Landon. I think that he could have used a bit more depth, at least in the beginning. Emma was such a darling. I really connected with her character. I felt that both Emma and Landon had wonderful character development. I very much liked all the secondary characters in the book. They added some depth to the story.
I really loved this slow-burn romance. Emma wanted nothing to do with Landon in the beginning. I loved how he didn't give up on her though and kept wearing her down. Their banter and interactions were riveting. They really had such intense chemistry that was undeniable.
Overall, this was such a compelling story with likable characters, a compelling storyline, and impeccable storytelling. This book is an outstanding addition to the Cocky Hero Club series and I can't wait for more from this series and from this author!
This book, this one book called, ' Lucky Bastard ' is by far my favorite book this author has written. I didn't realize how badly I needed this book, and this storyline in my life until I read it. Kaylee Ryan is the epitome of what I call a talented author. Her writing in general is something I wish every person on this planet experience, but the writing for ' Lucky Bastard ' is mind boggling. I was so invested into Emma and Landon's story, that I've neglected things I normally wouldn't have. Kids? Left for the hubby to deal with. Housework? That can wait til tomorrow. ' Lucky Bastard had me wrapped around it's pages, without a second thought.
The pace and flow that followed Emma and Landon's story was so easy to follow along to. There was a staggering amount of development that was made with the most fine tuned depth. The storyline was extraordinary. It held a light heartedness to it that made for a plot that wasn't over the top. The dialogue was the best I have ever seen this author do. It was done with the perfect amount of witty banter and maturity that confirms it's a Kaylee Ryan book. The chemistry and connection was done with the perfect amount of heat and concentration. It was loaded with passion and respect of one's heart.
The main characters are what continuously makes me an avid romance reader. They were everything I dreamed of and more. Kind and passionate, loyal to a fault. They are givers without wanting in return. The side characters also played an imperative roll within the storyline, and they only added more bonus points to this story.
I think I have used every positive adjective known in Websters Dictionary, and if that does not tell you how much I recommend this book, I don't know what does. I can not wait to read more from this author because she truly makes my heart sing.
Oh Landon! I absolutely loved this story. The chemistry between Landon and Emma was off the charts and although one of them...I won't say who, tries to deny it they burned up the pages of my Kindle. This story was sweet, fun, and smokin' hot!!!!! I absolutely loved seeing Chance, Aubrey, and CJ (Chance Jr.) Kaylee always knows how to write a story that sucks you in and has you dying to know how it's all going to play out.
If you loved Cocky Bastard by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward then you're going to love Lucky Bastard.
5 LUCKY STARS!! Another great story in this Cocky world. Landon and Emma were so fun to watch....they had me feeling all the feels. These two were perfect and I loved everything about them. This author is an amazing storyteller.....you must read this book.
I know I can always rely on Kaylee Ryan to write a book that immediately sucks me in and hook me in until the end. She never disappoints and this latest offering is no exception. I loved this story and once I started reading it, I could not put it down. The story, the characters and their journey captivates from the start.
I adored Emma and Landon, and I loved everything about their story. It was sweet, funny and hot. This book had all the feels and is a fantastic addition to the Cocky Hero Club.
These characters are incredibly endearing and the witty banter throughout the book is thoroughly entertaining. This is a beautifully written story, with humorous and heart-warming elements that had me totally captivated with this addictive page turner, and I cannot wait to read more from Kaylee Ryan.
Lucky Bastard hooked me right away, ensuring I was more than happy to devour this one in a single sitting. Although it was a wee bit slow in places, it certainly had me hooked and desperate to see how everything came together.
From the start, the characters grabbed me, and I was invested in their lives. The story went against what I expected, and I loved watching the way things developed between the characters. Although I saw some of the details coming, it was not enough to lessen my enjoyment. I was invested, and every detail had me wanting more.
All in all, an addictive read that left me wanting to read spin-off stories for many of the characters.
Lucky Bastard was the last of my Cocky Hero Club arcs and I saved it for last for a reason. I knew that I wanted the last book I read from the list to be good, and having read Kaylee Ryan's books before, I knew I couldn't go wrong with her and I wanted to end my first multi-arc venture on a high note. And she DID NOT disappoint! This has got to be Ryan's best work yet.
It was such a sweet, heartfelt story without unnecessary drama. I seriously can't find fault with this book except that now I want more! Emma and Landon were so precious and honest and raw with each other, they didn't play games and the development of their relationship seemed so organic to me. I felt their connection deeply.
Emma was cautious at first, not wanting to get involved with a famous football player of Logan's caliber and certainly not wanting to put her heart on the line for someone that the media portrayed as a manwhore that "dated" exclusively models, actresses and high society girls that were a far cry from Emma. A woman who was working on an animal shelter and had a lowkey lifestyle. But who could resist Landon freaking Barker?
When Emma shoots him down again and again and again, Landon doesn't know what to do with himself. Never had a woman say no to him before and that rattled our Lucky Bastard! At first, it was the chase. For once in his life, he had to actually put in the work, and I mean hard, hard work off the field to get what he wanted.
I loved how independent, outspoken, strong-willed and forward Emma was. She stuck to her beliefs and defended her worth until she was certain that Landon was genuine in his pursuit of her. And I loved how determined, genuine, raw and honest Landon was. He was the perfect leading man and I wish I could stumble across a Landon one day myself.
I loved loved loooooved seeing Chase, the ORIGINAL Cocky hero, and Aubrey again. I would have loved for Pixy to have shown up and promptly faint but the new characters were so perfectly integrated in the Cocky Bastard setting, I can't complain. And even though Chase and Aubrey were written by a completely different author, I couldn't tell the difference, which is a testament to Ryan's writing. And I would know, with how many times I've read Cocky Bastard over the years.
Lucky Bastard was a worthy addition to the Cocky Hero Club series and now all I want is for Emma and Landon to have a daughter at some point and have her fall in love with CJ while running around with Pixy. Cue the cuteness overload.
I loveKaylee Ryan's work so much I don’t even have words … she has exceptional storytelling skills. Every time I pick up a book by her I devour it in mere hours. Yeah, this book was no different!!!
I adored this story because it’s like the beginning of a roller-coaster ride. You’re slooooowly and steadily climbing up and up and up and then BAM, you’re free-falling … That’s how the journey of Landon and Emma read for me and it was perfect for them. She was guarded and he was determined so he had no choice but to push/nudge ever so carefully until she let herself go and then we were off! Sexy, swoony and full of heart! GAH, I loved this two so much!!
Oh I love Landon and Emma! Lucky Bastard had me feeling all sorts of emotions and I loved every single second of it.
Landon is a professional football player. Emma works at a pet shelter. These two are from different worlds, however, from the moment they met Landon was drawn to her. Emma, not so much. Will Landon be able to win over Emma?
I LOVED Landon. Seriously, he is swoony! He isn’t the typical professional football player. He isn’t overly cocky or arrogant. He is caring, loving and super sweet. He definitely proved he is willing to work hard to get what he wants, especially where Emma is concerned. I loved that Emma doesn’t just instantly swoon and fall all over Landon from the moment they met. She made him work. Their chemistry was great from the start there. I loved their banter and all the sweet little moments they shared.
This story was a sweet sports romance but there is also a few twists mixed in along with a brief moment of drama. I loved getting more glimpses of the OG Cocky Bastard, Chance and of course, Aubrey.
Another MUST READ by Kaylee and a great addition to the Cocky Hero world.
5 stars Recommend!!! I have to say I enjoy reading the book more than I think. Landon Barker is so cocky at first and Emma deserves better than that. But when he woos her, I am Team Landon at all costs. Damn, I think every women deserve to meet Landon of their own. The book is well written and so sweet. Anyway, I also want to know more about Emma's parents though. I love second chance romance and I am intrigued by them :)
Lucky Bastard was such a great read! I really loved it. This is about Landon Barker, Quarterback for the Trojans and Emma Deaton, who runs an animal shelter with Audrey from Cocky Bastard!! Landon was really swoony and sexy! Emma was sweet and sassy. I really loved them together! They were perfect for each other! Definitely recommend!
Oh my goodness I LOVED Landon & Emma. Lucky Bastard has been my favourite book in the Cocky Hero Series so far! It is a sweet, and steamy sports romance and I devoured it. I could not stop listening from start to finish. I loved getting to see Aubrey & Chance (from Cocky Bastard) again. Emma is Aubrey’s bestie and they are working together on an event for the animal shelter they work at. Emma has a heart of gold and has a bit of hesitation at first in getting involved with Landon. Landon is a professional football player and is the perfect man for Emma. He meets her and he turns on the charm immediately. He is confident and relentless in his pursuit of her. She made him work for it and of course it was so worth it! Their passion and chemistry was amazing! There is a little twist at the end I never saw coming and I loved it. Fantastic writing! Savannah Peachwood and Teddy Hamilton were the perfect choice in narrators. I love them. Their voices really bring these characters to life.
The man does not give up, “I picked you up, literally.” He smirks. “We had dinner, and now we’re watching a movie. I qualify that as a date.” I liked this book, I loved Landon.
Emma and Landon captured my heart so dang hard! I loved these two characters and their story. Both so real, so down to earth and perfect for each other. And the tiny little surprising twist towards the end was absolutely delightful!
I was struggling with this book at the beginning. I didn’t like the heroine and it wasn’t keeping my attention at all. There were few times when I thought about leaving it but now I’m glad that I didn’t give up on it. I ended up liking Emma and I really enjoyed this book. It was so sweet and I loved Landon. He was so kind, caring and funny. His constant attempts to woo Emma and to get her to go out on a date with him were adorable. I love that we get to see Chance and Aubrey from Cocky Bastard and their son CJ.
Cocky? Yes! Does he have a right to be? Yes....BUT...Landon Barker is also one the swooniest, sweetest heros, Kaylee's written. Emma meets Landon at a family day at her best friend's husbands football family day. There is something about Emma he wants to know more of.
I loved this story, Landon's character is larger than life, and his heart is even bigger. These two mesh well together once she let those walls down. I don't want to say too much, but this is a good addition to the Cocky Hero's series spin off. Landon and Emma are intertwined with Chance and Aubrey from Cocky Bastard by Penelope Ward/Vi Keeland's Cocky world. I'm hoping Kaylee writes Landon's teammates stories!!!
I can't say I loved this book. For me it was okay. It's a slow burn story and maybe I just wasn'tmood for a slow burn so I just had a hard time connecting with the characters and a hard time connecting with the story. There was a lot of build up and by the time the story reached the peak the story was almost over. There was so much that happened at the very end. It just felt like everything was thrown in there and then done. I really enjoyed the twist the author gave us I just wish it would have happened a little earlier in the story so as a reader I could digest what was happening. I think then I would have been a little more emotionally invest in the story. Overall, there were parts I enjoyed and parts I would have liked to see written differently.
I was really looking forward to this story. I had heard a lot about this author and was really looking forward to falling in love with what she creates! I think I had too high of expectations going into this book, while it wasn’t a bad read, it wasn’t anything overly amazing either.... The characters were interesting and I liked how the premise of the story was set up, then it just became like every other story out there only it kept dragging on. I would say the best part of this story was the last 10% where everything was coming together, did it feel rushed? Absolutely, but the twist was entertaining to read! I did enjoy this story overall, I just was hoping for something more to come from Lucky Bastard
I was kindly sent a copy of this book for review from Give Me Books in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
A cute and swoony sports romance that'll have you booking a flight to visit the Hermosa Beach Trojans!
Emma Deaton tags along with bestie Aubrey as they attended the Trojan's family training day, going along to support Aubrey's husband and new kicking coach Chance. Naturally, she turns some heads when she eventually makes it on the field, QB Landon Barker being one of them. As much as Emma knows that a night in the sheets with the star Quarterback would be an amazing experience, she's not a random hook-ups kind of girl, so immediately turns Landon down when he asks her out. Landon sees the spark of interest in her eye and won't take no for an answer. But it's not just about getting the girl for one night - Landon is soon just enjoying spending time with Emma and making her laugh. He just has to prove to her that he's not the player the tabloids make him out to be and that she's everything he hadn't wanted until now.
I'm apparently now a sucker for a good sports romance! I've mentioned this before, but I don't know what it is that just sucks me into these stories - I literally just start reading and then suddenly I'm three-quarters of the way through the book! Emma and Landon's relationship with so swoon-worthy and cute and I really enjoyed following the build-up throughout the story. While I wouldn't call it a slow build, the pacing was a nice change from the 'it's chapter three and we're in a relationship' thing you get with a lot of romances (not that that's a bad thing though!) It was the perfect amount of cute, sweet and steamy!
The one thing that was a little bummed about was the ending. Not that the ending of the book wasn't great (I love a good epilogue!), but I felt like everything in the last few chapters was wrapped up a bit too quickly. And since there wasn't a great deal of relationship conflict in the story (you know, one of those big misunderstandings that breaks them up for like three chapters), it felt like it was just missing a little something to really push it over the edge. But overall, it was super enjoyable and now I need some more Hermosa Beach Trojan romances to binge!
Speaking of more Trojan romances, I really loved seeing glimpses of Aubrey and Chance's relationship - their story in Penelope Ward & Vi Keeland's Cocky Bastard is part of the foundation of the world for the Cocky Hero Club novels being released over the next couple of months. I've not read it yet, but you can bet I'm chomping at the bit to dive in!
Sports romance fans and fans of Penelope and Vi's novels will LOVE diving into Kaylee's story. No doubt you'll be left wanting to book a flight to LA to find your own Hermosa Beach Trojan to fall madly in love with!
I've read books by this author before and I always look forward to her new releases. This book is part of the cocky hero club collection and this is a beautiful slow burn romance book that you wont be able to put down, this is the perfect romance book and you will not be disappointed. This is Emma and Landon's story and you will love it right from page one.
Emma is a strong, lovely sweet woman a real down to earth sort of person and she is really love-able who works in the animal shelter. When Emma first meets Landon 'number 18' she is not convinced by him and shuts him down straight away. Emma does not want to get her heart broken and she is not willing to take that chance. They are so different and have completely different lives so much so that she doesn't know what he will see in a woman like her.
Landon is a famous, hot, sexy sports player and a man who could have any woman he sets his eyes on and he always gets what he wants. So when he sees Emma at the family day he literally cant take his eyes of of her. But it isn't as easy as he first thought getting Emma's attention and Landon isn't used to having to really work at what he wants in a woman and that is just what Emma does, makes him work. But he is determined to make her see that actually he's not like she thinks and he is worth a shot, they both are. Will love conquer all for these two? Can they both find there happily ever after? (NO SPOILERS)
I loved the story and the little twists too that you really don't see coming and this book is a complete page turner that you wont be able to stop reading. The chemistry that these two have is undeniably strong, they are connected right from the off and this slow burn romance that these two have is beautiful to see. These two as a couple are relatable in who they are as people and I loved the banter that they shared. As the reader you can really feel them and you have a real connection with them both. I loved these characters how protective and how much he loves her and how she is an independent gorgeous woman who really knows her own mind. This author has written this story and these characters fantastic and as usual captures your heart with her writing too.
This book is a real must read and I highly recommend that everyone read it when it gets released. This book is another great addition to the Cocky Hero Club.
I cant wait to read more from this author in the future. Thank you to the author and the publishers for allowing me to read an early copy of this book.
ARC provided in exchange for an honest review. This book is expected to be released 17th May 2020.
