“You’re the big boss.” She looked up at me and smiled. She was dressed in a cheap cotton shirt and jeans that should be on the burn pile, but that smile was pure gold. This girl had guts.

“I told José he was a fool to try and cheat you,” she said. “I wasn’t part of it, and I don’t work for you. I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

She’d heard about our policy protecting bystanders. Of course it doesn’t apply to anyone whose eyewitness testimony can put me in a courtroom. Well, try to put me in a courtroom. In Mexico nobody would dare accuse me, and I’ve enough resources in England to guarantee a police investigation would come to nothing, but it’s not my style to take chances. Solitaire would be going into the ground along with Escamilla.

“Mr Vazquez,” Solitaire gave me her best smile. “I don’t expect something for nothing.” She dropped her voice. “You’d like me,” she whispered. “I’ve heard about you. We’re the same.”

“Are we?”

“Yes, I can make you very happy.” She brushed my hand over her cheek and then kissed my palm. “I’m a very good girl,” she said quietly. “Unless you prefer a naughty one?”

She sucked my thumb, and I was instantly rock hard.

----------------------------

When cartel boss Arturo Vazquez discovers his girlfriend Gina is a DEA rat and his deputy Escamilla is staging a take-over, Arturo fixes his problems by killing everyone - except for Solitaire, Escamilla’s unwilling mistress. Solitaire is intelligent, tough, and shares Arturo’s interest in BDSM. Arturo falls head over heels but someone is leaking information - and the evidence point at Solitaire.

Songbird is a complete and self standing novel. Warning: This book contains explicit scenes of dubious consent, graphic violence and sex.

Songbird was reread for me and I have only read this 1 book in the series but this can definitely be read as a standalone read no issues whatsoever.
So this had a very distinctive writing style almost conversational at times which I really did like.
It’s dual POV and dark mafia romance.

Arturo Vazquez is the big boss of the Mexican cartel, cleaning house after a betrayal close to home Solitaire is the only surviving witness.
Solitaire manages to lose her memory in this same clean-up after being accidentally electrocuted.
Originally Intending to off her as they don’t leave witnesses behind to tell tales instead Arturo decides to takes Solitaire home with him as his personal companion and mistress.

So this had some very dark themes running through it, like in the first chapter the hero feeds his rat girlfriend to the sharks for betraying him.
But though this was quite graphic and brutal in terms of the content I didn’t find the romance itself especially dark.
Also, the BDSM angle here is relatively minor rather this relies on the mystery that is Songbird, an unknown entity leaking secrets and sabotaging business.
There’s another rat and everyone’s pointing fingers especially at Solitaire herself.

I liked how pragmatic our girl was she has a cool head and a massive dose of self-preservation.
She’s also no innocent and is more than a match for Arturo, I found her super refreshing compared to all the hysterical drama queens heroines we are usually given, She also has a very shady past herself so was more than a match for Arturo.

Arturo is definitely prepared to make the hard choices and still manages to sleep at night.
He loves his family, in fact, there his only weak spot until Solitaire and he’s prepared to do whatever needs doing to keep them safe.
He not afraid of getting his hands dirty and has done some pretty horrific things he rules his enemies and associates alike with the terror of what will happen if they dare to cross him.
But he does have standards and his own sort of warped moral code that I could totally get on board with here.
I liked that when the chips fell he gave Solitaire a choice not lying about what this lifestyle entails.

This mainly revolves around the mystery of just who the rat is and Solitaires recent memory issues.
It was an easy enjoyable read and I’m definitely planning to read more in this series as I enjoyed this one a lot.

Wow, this book blew me away! What a suspenseful, captivating look at love, and life in general, in the Mexican cartel. I loved the gutsy, super sharp heroine too! A.J. Adams shows her great talent for dark, suspenseful romantic writing in Songbird, which amazingly is only her third book. Not only was the book well written, but it was witty and erotic and the elaborate well thought out plot kept me guessing every step of the way. I will definitely be looking for more of Ms. Adams’ works in the future!

When everyone is out to get you, can the one person who could possibly save you be one of the most evil and darkest drug lords ever to exist? That’s the question that Solitaire is faced with as she finds herself smack dab in the middle of a Mexican cartel war over drug territory rights in England.
Having been kidnapped, held against her will and repeatedly raped by Escamilla, the leader of the Los Zetas’ operations in England, she has nothing left to lose when the head of the entire Los Zetas, Arturo Vazquez, comes knocking on their door to take Escamilla out. Apparently Escamilla had been a very, bad boy and was looking to go independent.

Arturo is instantly attracted to Solitaire and impressed by her gutsy nature and apparent bravery in the hopeless situation she finds herself in. An attraction that Solitaire clearly shares. Rather than fall apart as most women (in fact, most men) would have done in a similar situation, she maintains her composure and tries her best to find a way to make herself useful to Arturo.
Still she’s a witness to murder, and a traitor’s “girlfriend”, so can she be trusted? In the cartel world, loyalty means more than blood, and is the one thing you can’t live without. Even if Arturo where somehow convinced, he also has to think of the optics, after all cartels rule by terror. Can there possibly be a HEA in store for this couple?

Solitaire is one of the ingenious, tough heroines I’ve encountered in a very long time. I was glued to my Kindle throughout the entire read, just waiting to see what she would do next. I was convinced a number of times that the plot was going one way, and then Ms. Adams would shock and astound me with yet another unexpected twist and turn.

Additionally, the BDSM erotic nature of this novel was well done and added a whole other dimension to this fantastic read. I also enjoyed learning both Solitaire’s and Arturo’s point of views throughout the whole novel as this greatly added depth to the story.

If you enjoy erotic, suspenseful romances with bad boy heroes, and even more impressive heroines, then I can’t recommend Songbird highly enough!

This is the second book I've read by AJ Adams and I have to say that she is definitely one of my favorite authors. I love her unique take on situations that normally are seen in black and white.

For example, the 'hero' in this book, Arturo, is not normally someone you'd think of as a hero. He's a ruthless cartel boss and, at first I thought, how on earth can I come to like this guy. But you get into his head, you understand how his mind works, and a few chapters in, you're in love.

This book hooked me very quickly and kept me reading. I had to find out who Songbird was. I had to find out the end of the story.

The sex was hot! The story unique and compelling. Now I need to read The Bonus, too, to find out Chloe's story.

AJ, you are a fantastic author and I cannot wait to see what you come up with next in that head of yours!

“Every man has an Achilles heel, and I knew Solitaire was mine.”

With “Songbird” we visit once again the dark world of the zeta cartel but this time we see it through the eyes of its own creator and leader: Arturo. Having all eyes on him all the time, waiting for him to show weakness has made him a very harsh character who doesn’t hesitate to hand out punishment to those who aren’t loyal to him. Arturo was quite different from the other members in the sense that he might use some violence when necessary but usually, he had to use his brains in order to handle business with the rest of the criminal world.

A hero like him needed a heroine who would be equally strong and smart as him and I think Solitaire manages to do that quite well. She always fought back and didn’t hesitate to throw a punch and a kick when it was needed but the thing I admired in her the most was the way she was able to support Arturo and his business by helping him organize and manage his clubs, seeing her actively participate in his activities rather than standing back and watch was refreshing.

I really enjoyed their relationship and the way they kept protecting each other and I had so much fun seeing Solitaire messing with Arturo.
“You know you’ll have a heart attack if you don’t say something, right?”

The suspense in this book was also pretty interesting as we try to discover who the person that has being giving information to the police with the code name “Songbird” is. That task was extremely difficult due to the fact that Solitaire, who had the necessary information, suffers from memory loss but I think the way she got it felt a little bit weird to me.

I am also not sure about the BDSM elements of the story, Arturo has never talked about safety or limits and has never used safe words, plus I don’t think BDSM can go hand in hand with dubious consent. Rather than saying Arturo was practicing BDSM I would say that him and Solitaire were using some kinky toys in the bed.

I voluntarily reviewed the free copy of this book that I received.

I did generally enjoy this story minus a few misgivings. All in all there weren’t really any terrible spelling or grammar errors, and I like the author’s style.

In this story we meet Solitaire who has been being held as a toy by a higher ranking man in the cartel. When going in to clean up a mess, cartel boss Arturo happens across the two not so love birds. After telling Solitaire he’ll let her leave if she gives up the info he’s after, she quite conveniently loses her memory via electrocution. The remainder of the story is Solitaire’s kind of relationship with Arturo, and her trying to remember who she is and details of her life. All the while the cartel is being threatened by a mole names “Songbird”. Solitaire has a suspicion that if she could just remember some more information, she might be able to help them figure out who Songbird is. After all, she had spent weeks overhearing conversations and seeing the comings and goings of the many people associated with this specific cartel.

Overall I actually really enjoyed this story as a suspenseful mystery/thriller. I did not, however, enjoy it as a BDSM read. Only because there was hardly any BDSM things going on. There are a few sex scenes but nothing that would really lean me towards classifying this as BDSM or erotica. But I did enjoy nonetheless.

The only other slight irritation is that the entire story rides on Solitaire not having her memory. There really wouldn’t be any story if this didn’t happen, so obviously I can forgive the author for it. Even if it is a plot element I don’t really enjoy too much. It always just seems too convenient.

I also really enjoyed Solitaire as a character overall. She is feisty and determined and extremely street smart. Things that have stayed with her as a natural part of her personality so the losing memories didn’t affect that. I also really enjoyed the dual POV in this story because it wasn’t just rehashing of the same chapter over and over again from different views.

I would definitely read this author again but would probably be more cautious as to the mood I’m in when I do since this definitely wasn’t what I expected.

This story was a mixed bag for me. I enjoyed it for the most part, however I found it extremely drawn out. There’s a truck load of violence, one scene of a woman being hit, which almost made me put it down and not finish the story. However, for the most part the men in this story took care of ‘their’ women.

So yeah the violence, while no newbie to such dialogue, there were a number of scenes which in my humble opinion were concocted for the sole purpose of showing how badass these members of the Cartel were, and did little to drive the bigger story.

Solitaire has a memory block, and the events of what happened to her prior to being with Arturo pop into her mind randomly as they try to uncover who Songbird is. Something that doesn’t really come to anything worthy of chewing up the pages until the 89% mark.

Given I received this story to read via the BDSM Group TPE bar, and the blurb states Solitaire is intelligent, tough, and shares Arturo’s interest in BDSM I guess I expected more on that front too. There’s one flogging scene, then a tease of Arturo taking Solitaire to the Dungeon… to sleep! Yeah I groaned feeling a tad ripped off there. Oh and talk about the sex swing being fun…nothing on page though.

On a personal level, I hate being talked to by characters! I find it jarring. Yes, I want to be able to feel and see what’s going on, BUT I am not in your story! I end up looking around the room going, “Huh, you talking to me?”

On the positive, the story is well edited, only a couple of typos most won’t even see, and I enjoyed the mix of UK and US dialogue. If you're not familiar of the term 'bonk' you will be by the end of Songbird.

If you’re looking for a story with a tonne of violence, the backstory of a conspiracy and a little bit of slap and tickle this might be just the ticket.

So,to celebrate,i decided to re-read it.
After all,i did enjoy the heck out of it the first time....

And guess what? It was just as great this time!
I really love the level-headedness of Solitaire, the way she accepted losing her memory....and the way she embraced her new life.
And Arturo....that man may be the jefe of the Zeta cartel,he will do anything for his loved ones!
Once he trusted Solitaire,he gave her control of part the business....a legitimate part at first, but still.

This is a story of surviving hardship, and coming up stronger.
About getting a second chance, and grabbing it with both hands.
About how criminals still have morals.....and a heart that is só generous,só big.
In spite of all the ugliness they see....and deal with.

This second installment of the series tells us the story of Solitaire and how she hooks up with the big boss of the Zeta’s. He’s been betrayed by his girlfriend and by the man she was with. He doesn’t trust Solitaire, but she persuades him to keep her, telling him she likes his kink....Is it a good decision,or...? Find out what happens in this dark beauty and hold onto your seat, you’ll need the support....

Talk about an unconventional romance! Songbird is not your typical love story but there is definitely something beautiful about seeing these two criminals, both with hearts of gold, find happiness with each other.

Arturo is a mob boss, as head of a Mexican cartel he has a reputation that is well deserved! Dealing in everything from drugs and prostitution to textiles and the stock market means that he and his crew have to run a tight ship and Arturo is not a man you want to come up against!

Solitaire has been held captive by one of Arturo’s men and has been subjected to rape and other abuse during her stay. Not inexperience with the crime world herself, when Arturo and his men come to her abductors house once they learn of his betrayal, Solitaire sees this as an opportunity to save herself and makes a deal with Arturo for her life.

These two have an instant attraction and chemistry that is off the charts! The more time Arturo spends with Solitaire the more he realizes he may want to keep her around long term. But can she be trusted? With an informant somewhere on the inside can anyone really be trusted?

I really enjoyed this story and despite all of the criminal activity I found myself falling in love with these characters. There was a really good element of mystery throughout the book that kept me guessing all the way to the very end! This story does have some elements of BDSM in this story but it’s nothing to extreme. Actually there wasn’t that many sex scenes in the book but the ones that were there were very sexy.

OMG! I cannot believe how long I let this book sit on my Kindle before starting it because it is AMAZING!! Songbird completely and utterly blew me away. It captured my attention, challenged my mind, and kept me guessing. I hated whenever I had to tear myself away from it. I didn't even want to go to sleep, that's how awesome it was! I totally, one-hundred percent, LOVED this book!!!

Songbird is not all sunshine and rainbows, but it is not as dark as I thought it was going to be. Honestly, except for the beginning and one or two other parts in the story, it is actually easy and fun to read. I will definitely pick it up again and I can't wait to read the rest of A.J. Adams' books!!!

I loved Arturo! It's true that he is the boss of a cartel and he can be violent, but he's actually a good guy far more than he is a bad one. He is fiercely loyal and protective of his family and Solitaire. In fact, he's downright sweet and so cute sometimes. Arturo is strong, possessive, faithful, and you can't question his love for Solitaire. He is just a wonderful hero and I adored him!

Man, Solitaire, is a total bada*s! She's so strong and is just as loyal as Arturo. She's smart, honest, and cool under pressure. They are so much alike and truly are a perfect match.

Songbird is a book about loyalty, family, and protecting what you love. It is suspenseful, will keep you on your toes, and just when you think you figure out the mystery, A.J. Adams will throw you a curveball that has you doubting and questioning whether you really have it all figured it out; it's awesome!

The only issue that I had with this book was that it took me a few seconds to realize when a flashback started and when it ended. It wasn't a major problem though and it didn't stop me from enjoying the book.

I can't tell you how much I loved this book. It made me laugh, smile and feel really happy. I loved the relationship, from how hot it was to how in love they were. I hope A.J. Adams writes about the other men in the book because I'd enjoy reading about all these wonderful characters again!

Songbird is told from both Arturo and Solitaire's point of view, it does have a HEA, and it is a standalone.

This is one amazing book, everything I've come to expect from AJ Adams. If you've read The Bonus, or The Degas Girl, then you'll know what Songbird is going to be like.

Songbird is full of Mexican drug cartels, danger, intrigue, and hot steamy sex. What's not to love about that? Fair warning, there are scenes of violence against women, especially the very first chapter, but if you can stick it out, you will be rewarded with an amazing romance between Solitaire and Arturo.

Arturo is the head of a very powerful Mexican drug and organized crime group. Arturo can have just about any woman he wants, but it is all hollow. He is lonely, and feeling trapped by his gilded cage. But all that changes when he comes across a fiery woman kept in an actual cage by a traitorous business associate. The associate is dealt with promptly, but now Arturo is faced with what to do with the woman.

The woman is Solitaire, a strong intelligent woman who grabs his attention right away. Normally, Arturo would have taken out Solitaire as a potential witness, but there is something about her that made him want to learn more. So, instead of snuffing her, he packs her up and takes her along with him.

Solitaire is a great character, strong enough to stand up to a powerful man like Arturo, but woman enough to light his fires. She finds herself being drawn to him like a moth to a flame. The hot sexy scenes of them together are plentiful, but not enough that they became boring. The story is meaty enough to stand up on it's own.

The one part of the book that bothered me a little bit was the artifice of amnesia. Solitaire conveniently looses part of her memory early on. This eventually becomes a major point in the plot. However, I'm willing to overlook it because the characters and the rest of the plot more than make up for it.

It was great seeing Kyle and Chloe from The Bonus again, but you don't have to read The Bonus first. This is a standalone novel. If you don't mind a little darkness mixed in with your erotic romance, then this book should be perfect for you. And don't forget to check out AJ's other novels. They are all amazing!

The head of Los Zetas, brutal, eye for an eye, multi millionaire... Arturo runs it all.

Going after a traitor, he will find someone he never imagined... Solitaire. She showed him her loyalty and dark side.

One night with her wouldn't be enough. He had to have her in whatever way he could.

Solitaire has been tortured, raped and can't remember her past.

Arturo saved her, gave her a second chance.
Seriously, he didn't have to. He's brutal remember.

"You're mine forever."- Arturo

While their relationship grows, word of a Songbird, who's leaking information is unearthed. Could it be Solitaire? Could she be the Songbird? Hell, she can't even remember her past.

"I have no.idea what I've been doing. I guess I'll have to find out at some point."- Solitaire

If so, she'll lose everything, including her life at the hands of a man she has fallen for. What kind of luck, seriously!

"You're worried I'll run screaming from th he reality of Cartel life?"- Solitaire

Solitaire has to find out the truth, one way or another. But will she out her own self in the process?

Songbird was a different kind of read for me. Having the backdrop of Cartel life, crime boss, I hardly read book's like this, but I enjoyed SongBird and open to a broder range of book's. Arturo is a character you wouldn't want to cross paths with on the street. That's for sure! He's scary, a ring leader, but Solitaire brings out a new side of him. I loved seeing that transformation... believe me, he's still scary though. Lol! Solitaire doesn't truly know who she is, the life she led be for Arturo. She can't remember. Arturo saved her, when he could have killed her. Being with him opens up a new world, one that she's kind of familiar with. She's a bitch when she needs to be. She's feisty, stands her ground and grows so much during this book. It's amazing. Their such great characters. Songbird is a book about finding love when you weren't looking, but also a mystery. It takes you on a hardcore journey. One you'll never want to take yourself. The author, that mind. I would love to go inside it for just a few minutes, but I think I would be traumatized by it. Lol. 4 STARS!!!

I rated this book five star, this is my time reading one of A.J.Adams book, quite frank it's awesome, I read this story without going to sleep it was just that good. Solitaire and Arturo love story was exciting. It has drugs, Killings Mafia style and not to mention the sex is hot. I really like how the story was told, Warning there are some Violence against women that some may not like but justs adds to the story. Solitaire has beauty and brains, when she meets Arturo he had come to head up a operation to get back at someone who has tried to take over his business but he is going to sent a message to others who make want to try to take over his business, Solitaire is there arguing with the man that Arturo intends to kill, he also has the mind to kill her too, she offers her body for life but Arturo is not really listening until she saves his life that he decides to may her his girl. Just reading this teaser will have you wanting to read this book. I recommend this book to anyone who loves Mafia romance, it's a Must Read on your Book list.

I wont bother you with a precis of tbe book because you can read the synopsis. I want you to know how this book makes the reader feel. This book is absolutely amazing. It had me gripped by the first paragraph. It was gripping and exciting and I found I could not put the book down until I finished it. It most definitely packed a punch! Arturo typical alpha male and Solitaire a bad ass female had a relationship so hot it burned the pages. This isn't an atypical romance but it is a beautiful love story where love triumphs over tragedy torture and betrayal. This is a story about the dark side of life murder prostitution drug and gun running. But you know this is one of the best books I have read in a while. This is definitely an author to watch out for. If you don't read it you won't know what you are missing out on. This is a very well written book and I cannot rate it high enough. Brilliant absolutely brilliant!

Arturo Zeta is a horrible person - a brutal drug lord who rules through terror. He first shows up in The Bonus and is thoroughly unlikeable. He starts out Songbird the same way. So why 5-stars? Because in the end, I liked him. Even knowing it was ridiculous - real cartel drug lords are nasty.

Too old and mature to be a 'bad boy', he is definitely a bad man, but not completely irredeemable. His relationship with Solitaire is believable from page one and the chemistry is intense. There is also an excellent suspense/mystery plot that kept me turning the pages. The sexy bits are every bit as hot as I've come to expect from the author. If you like dangerous crime-lords with hearts of gold and the woman they possess stories, this one's for you.

Thanks so much for a free book in exchange for a review. I begged for this book because....it screams read me. Not to mention the story line is along the line of books I love to read. No disappointment here. I loved it...I devoured it. I recommend to anyone who loves mafia books with dubious consent, graphic violence, and sex. Dark romance seems to be the flavor lately, and this book follows the synopsis perfectly. I enjoyed reading this book, and I definitely recommend it. Overall entertainment at its best Five stars!

Loved the first half (4stars), then it all went downhill from there (2stars). It was boring, and was a chore to finish. Lots of telling instead of showing.
The H became too weak and I missed the crazy psycho we met in book 1. Giving this 2 stars because it was boring and I didn’t believe in their love.

No cheating
No big jealous or possessive moments. Boring.
No virgins.

What I appreciate the most about this author is how she writes her heroines. They’re broken, tortured, and she doesn’t hold back with the tough scenes.
And she doesn’t have ridiculous 30 yr old, whiny virgins.🙄

Its so refreshing to read a book, where the stories are different. Where you can't guess what is to come next. This is that book for me! I'll be honest and say I have never even heard of this book or author, but wow!! I can't wait for more. I was asked to read and review this book and I am so glad to have done so. Songbird is something different from your average love story. There is mystery and gore. Love and hate.

"She sucked my thumb, and I was instantly rock hard. I gazed at that lovely face and decided I might take her on a joyride if there was time. Afterwards she'd have to go, but seeing as she'd been helpful, I'd simply shoot her. The message the other bodies would send would be enough to concentrate everyone's thoughts on the evil consequences of pissing me off. I'd be generous and give her an easy out."

Solitaire isn't your average bombshell. She has looks and the brains. She book smart and street smart. She had a rough life growing up and uses every situation to make her stronger. Harder. But she has to e dealing with the guys she hangs around with. Its a world of All for themselves. And the weak get left behind. But when she's at her lowest and opportunity comes barging in with guns and bombs, she is willing to do whatever she can to walk away free.

Arturo is all male. He runs a multi-billion dollar business. And runs a tight ship. He is a man of respect and authority. If you don't give him either, then your as good as dead. He doesn't trust easily and for good reason too, there are too many people out to put him to ground. Both men and women want a piece of him. Finding out one of his own is double-crossing him, its an instantaneous decision. Take them out. Cleaning house and taking back what is his, he would never have thought to find the one thing in his life that he doesn't have, but craves.

Paths are crosses. Danger is everywhere. And everyone is a suspect. I am in love with this book and will definitely tell others to read this treasure!!! 5 Jaw-Dropping Stars!!!

I have come to really like this Author. This is the follow up book to The Bonus. With the story revolving around the head honcho Arturo.

Arturo is the head of the "family". Known for his cruelness and cold heart, he finds himself drawn to Solitaire when he finds her in the house of a man he is gunning after. Solitaire is a strong leading lady. Not one to take too much crap and is determined to fight the pull she feels towards Arturo. As she plays her part until she can find her way out, she discovers she actually likes the new life she has been drug into.

The is a mole in the house. Solitaire ends up with amnesia, but it comes into question, as well as her loyalty. And as secrets get leaked, and the competition gets a leg up, all suspicion lands on Solitaire. She finds herself fighting to save herself.

Arturo is a cold hearted man. I really think he would kill his own momma if it meant saving himself. But, he finds himself wanting to protect Serenity, even at the cost of his reputation. He is on a mission to discover who the real "Songbird" is before it is too late and Solitaire looses her life.

This book kept me on my toes. I was never really sure where it was going to go. And I have to admit, although I thought I had finally figured it out, the ending threw me. And you know me, I LOVE it when that happens.

I don't think it is necessary to read The Bonus prior to reading Songbird. But I recommend it, just because you will get more background information. And Kyle, the lead from The Bonus, is prominent in this one as well. But, you could read Songbird as a stand alone and not feel lost.

When I started reading the second installment, I was beyond frustrated by how similar this and the 1st book in this series are. The premise in THE SONGBIRD is essentially the same as THE BONUS except for this one is about Arturo instead of Kyle and Arturo’s bonus is a woman named Solitaire instead of Chloe. Luckily, there did end up being enough differences between the books to prevent me from quitting yet overall, this book was much slower and far less gripping. What I liked about this book was the, “Songbird” aspect of the storyline. I was often impressed by the way Adams dove into the minds of the characters, creating some very unique yet believable scenarios I had never previously considered. There was a lot of extraneous detail and information that should have been omitted, again adding to the prolonged feel of this installment.

This book starts with Arturo discovering his girlfriend is working for the DEA. He immediately and brutally kills her. Cut to Arturo and his crew pretty much killing everyone and anyone in their path, Arturo meets Solitaire. Is she genuine or is she a rat too? As the story unfolds Arturo finds himself falling for Solitaire despite the threat of Songbird out there closing in on him and his crew.

Overall, I enjoyed the story. There was not as much BDSM as I would have thought considering I received this book in a BDSM group. I enjoyed the beginning and the end. The middle seemed a bit long. I just wanted to find out who Songbird was.

A. J. Adams has written another book that had me rooting for the bad guys. A cartel Jefe and how he finds his perfect mate while carrying out a raid and execution cartel style had me from the first scene. I know that Arturo is not “nice” and does some wicked things and his business is not legal but his heart is huge, he loves his family and he loves Solitaire, too. I loved the dynamics of this love story. I really enjoyed Solitaire’s strength of character and ability to survive. I don’t know how this author manages to create characters I should hate but thoroughly enjoy instead!

~RECEIVED FOR HONEST REVIEW~

Excuse me here, while I clear my head. This book has left me with a WOW out look. This characters are so real like and the plot even more. You don't feel like you're reading a story, you feel like it's you, you are the character and you are doing the deeds. The steaminess and the excitement of a thrill will keep you plotted on the couch and gripping your reader!

Re read in 2016, I read all the Zetas books in order and now it makes sense.
I am also surprise how not BDSM this read has been. I enjoyed the thriller, the story although at the beginning I did not quite get it. I think there were too many details in the book and a good editor might get rid of it, but overall I did see the growth in the author writing. I think Mrs Adams has a new fan :)

I started reading this book because I had already read the first book in the series, The Bonus and I was curious to know what would happen next. I didn't particularly like that one, but it had a nice story and I was plain curious. Plus, I have this OCD to read every book in a series. (Sucks to be me!)

And that is why, I got on with Songbird and believe me, you have no idea how much better this was than the previous one. Heck, Solitaire was a far less irritating character than Chloe could ever be! Sure, both of them were strong and I adored that about both of them, but Solitaire rocked! Her self-control to not rat out anyone was marvellous!
(Besides, she wasn't attracted to puns, you know?)

This book was a nice thriller. (Yes, not just contemporary mafia fiction, but thriller as well! How cool is that?) There was so much suspense and mystery filled into the pages of this book that ah, I found myself totally hooked. Arturo and Solitaire's improved narration helped a lot. Of course, it was still so much like a soliloquy but somehow, I didn't mind this time. I guess, I liked the characters a lot more here.

I'll be honest though, half the time I thought Solitaire was Songbird and she had forgotten. But then when things began to happen even after she was with Arturo, I figured she had a really strong case of multiple personality disorder. Believe it or not, had there been scenes from Songbird's personality, I would have just believed it alright. But I won't say the identity surprised me. I had guessed it a little but man, that was only half of it! The other half was so strange, I could never have even imagined it.

Songbird was a great addition to the Zeta Cartel novel. Filled with drama, mystery and romance, this was the perfect read for New Year's. I just can't believe I didn't come across Adams' works earlier. She rocks! Of course, there were a few things that bothered me but I guess that is just something that happens every single time I read a book out of my comfort zone so yeah, I won't say much on that.

There were things that confused me though. I mean, if everyone was receiving texts from Songbird, shouldn't they have those numbers checked? Sure, it wouldn't have yielded any result, but just to have that information out there, it would have consoled my terrified heart that well, at least, Arturo and Kyle are taking steps in the right direction.

Other than that, I found Arturo and Solitaire's relationship a perfect hit. They weren't perfect. Each of them had their past, both of them did things they were ashamed of, but at least they understood each other and in the end, it was all worth it.

I wish we had seen the weddings that were talked about so much in the second half of the book but eh, well, maybe better luck next time!

I was given this book as part of the BDSM r2r read for an honest review.

I enjoyed the book, but felt the sexual chemistry for me was missing. The sexual side of the book was lacking, I just couldn't feel the passion. Cartel boss Arturo meets Solitaire under unusual circumstances, when her lover/ boss is taken out by the Cartel. They hit it off from the start and their love blossoms. She manages to loose her memory because of a taser incident, and only snippets of this returns, but she's has a business mind that he puts to good use.
The book is written from the two characters perspectives, which I enjoyed, and it has a lovely story line despite the darker subject matter. But apart from some limited torture scenes and death, I personally didn't find the book dark, or hard to read.
It's an enjoyable read, light hearted and an easy read. It's a total story, no continuation, no cliff hangers which is a refreshing change, and it has some amusing moments, how a strong minded lady takes on the cartel and wins their hearts.
Good read

I was amazed how not BDSM or erotic this book is even if it is considered one.

This story is about Arturo Rodriguez and his life being a cartel boss. He lives a very sheltered life but don't be fooled by it because he can do very disturbing things when you get on his bad side. For him, trust and loyalty is hard to see in other people which is why he only trusts so little people that you can count it with your fingers. But business aside, he is a family man and he cares for women and children and the less unfortunate. His image is the one thing that makes him well known and if that's been compromised then all hell will break lose. It was not in his plan to meet Solitaire, a girl who was good in hiding and has more secrets than you ever imagine. Arturo was amazed by Solitaire's beauty and brains but was reluctant to have her with his life being so complicated. Then comes the Songbird which ruffled a lot of feathers in the life of both people.

Secrets are revealed and trusts are earned but will it be enough for Arturo to accept what he feels towards Solitaire?

This book got me gripped from the beginning! I was confused at first because I have no experience reading a story such as this where its about businesses, mobs and cartels. I just drew the conclusion that apart from the things between Arturo and Solitaire, it was all business and finding out who Songbird is.

I like the approach of this story, although it is narrated in the first person, it somehow feels that your not the one experiencing it but rather they tell you what to experience; especially on Arturo's point of view. He admits to every flaw he has and although he is an ass for it, you can't resist not to love him. Solitaires' is more dark and murky because of what had happened to her which made the story more interesting! Overall I like it, it made me laugh, made me gasp, made me shiver at the gory things and made me fall in love with how Arturo and Solitaire came to be.

This a four stars for me.

HERE ARE THE THINGS THAT MADE THIS BOOK MEMORABLE FOR ME.

"I'm not a poster boy for Mr. Sensitive, but I felt for her"

"Sí jefa!"
"My name is Solitaire"
"Sí jefa Solitaire!"
"Just Solitaire."
"Sí jefa!"

"...he name drops like hell, so he sounds good --if you have the street smarts of a newborn kitten."

"When shit happens, you follow the rules: deny, deny, deny.""

"After that they got on better, and I'm thinking they might be friends -- by the time we celebrate our silver wedding anniversary maybe."

These books are really unusual for mafia romances but also very intriguing and captivating.

So far I've read read Jorge's book (Twisted, #5) and then this. Whilst the characters, and timeline, overlap slightly I've not found it difficult to pick up the story and read it as a stand alone. The stories are cleverly written to avoid (too many) spoilers for other books. It barely took any time to be drawn into Songbird and I soon find myself totally engaged by both the unpredictable plot and the fantastic characters.

Whilst there are some very dark events in the book they never feel too gruesome, with either much of the detail skimmed over or the specifics given in retrospect. This always felt like a mafia story, but one that very much breaks the mould, giving the genre a whole new perspective and feel. And definitely in a good way. It definitely has moments of a 'British' feel to it, but not overly so, at least to my mind. Though as a Brit I'm not sure if I'm the best judge of that or not.

I adore how the inner thoughts of the main characters often had an air of narration about them. Not only did it lend a wonderful humour to the story but made both Arturo and Solitaire into very engaging, likeable and warm characters. The plot ducks, dives and weaves it's way along whilst providing ample opportunity for Arturo and Solitaire to fall for each other, along with plenty of reasons for us, the reader, to fall for them too.

This author just writes in a way that speaks to my heart and soul and I very much recommend this book to all romance readers.
