Layover Lover

Flying the friendly skies has been more than just a job to me. It’s my home.

Ten years ago I ran away from everything I’ve known and vowed never to return. That is until my flight is canceled due to weather, and I’m stuck in San Francisco.

Fate is not on my side when I end up in an Uber rideshare with the one man I thought I’d never see again.

Zack Hunt was my high school sweetheart, and the boy I walked away from without a note saying goodbye. Except, he’s no longer a boy. No, this man is gorgeous, intense, and heated at the sight of me.

The anger searing off him is nothing compared to the way my heart pounds from seeing him again. Words are said. Feelings are crushed. But when he invites me into his bar to hash out our past, I find myself following him in, desperate for more.

The line between past and present is blurred when Zack challenges me to a dare—come back home with him to see what I walked away from.

Call me a glutton for punishment, but I do.

Then I challenge him right back to live a day in my shoes.

We drive home to rediscover the past
We fly abroad to live in the present.
When we stop moving, we realize we may never have a future.

Layover Lover is a second chance romance, aligned by fate. Can two lost souls really find love again on a layover? Or do they need to keep flying?

When I was little, my mom was part of the Double Day book club. She had piles and piles of books lying around the house; most of them with Fabio-esque men and a scantily clad woman set in a different century. I made up stories in my head just from looking at the covers.

When I as 9, I wrote stories using my best friend as a muse. They were romances...but for the 9-year-old. She was the only one who read them.

When I was 14, another friend gave me a Marian Keyes novel. I fell in-love with her wit, and humor with a dark side. This was my first experience with realistic fiction.

When I was 19, Nicholas Sparks forever changed my views on relationships. I learned what true love could be beautiful and difficult at the same time. I wanted it.

When I was 22, Jeannette Wells made me feel more emotion from an autobiographical novel than I thought possible. I wanted to be her.

When I was 30, Jamie McGuire and Colleen Hoover introduced me to the world of self-publishing. For the first time I thought: I could give this a try someday.

When I was 32, my someday came.

Layover Lover is part of the Cocky Hero Club series and is by Jeannine Colette and Lauren Runow. This is my first time reading anything by Jeannine and only my second from Lauren. I previously read her book Day One and I fell in love with her writing.

Jolene Davies is a flight attendant. Ten years ago, she fled from her small town and from the boy she loved, to live a life of travel and adventure. She had succeeded in doing this. She’d traveled all over the world and seen and done wonderful things. Now she’s in San Francisco, her flight canceled, and stranded. One Uber rideshare gone wrong and Jo finds herself face to face with the boy, now a man, whose heart she broke all those years ago. And he doesn’t seem too happy to see her either.

broody male bartender - Google Search

Ten years ago, Zack Hunt lost the love of his life. He struggled for a long time after Jo left him. But now he has a busy and successful life in San Francisco running his bar and going home to help his dad a couple of days a week. But when Zack hopped into that Uber and saw her, he was both furious and thrilled. Finally, after ten long years, he was going to get some answers.

“This is the Zack I remember. The guy who never gave up on me, stood by my side until I got it right.”

I loved these two. They were each other’s first everything. I have to admit that at first, I wanted to dislike Jolene. I thought, how selfish she must have been to leave Zack like that. But then I got to know her better, and her story slowly unfolded, and I fell in love with her. And oh my, then there is Zack. All swoony and tough and sweet and sexy and just amazing.

These two had chemistry that never waned, even after all the years that passed. The more time they spend together, the more their previous bond strengthened. They are living in the moment, getting to know each other as adults, not as the kids they previously were.

No matter how much they love each other, though, their lives are polar opposites. Zack lives in San Francisco. And Jo spends the biggest part of her life in the air. Zack’s life is tied to his family, his responsibilities, his bar. Jolene’s life is her work, her freedom, her travels. How can these two lives ever merge?

air bus

There isn’t much I didn’t love about this book. There was no unnecessary angst. Just two people who accepted the life they were living, not really realizing what was missing until they found it again. Two people clearly meant to be together. I loved everything about this. It was sexy, sweet and swoony. I have to mention the amazing epilogue as well. I am an epilogue junkie and this one was just perfect! I most definitely look forward to reading more by either of these authors.

Drawn in by the sizzling chemistry, palpable personalities, and relatable struggles, Jeannine Colette and Lauren Runow deliver a lovely second chance love story that simply warmed our hearts. A past grounded in heartbreak, Jolene and Zack’ s fateful reunion exposes both their harbored deep seated feelings. Though tragedy and fear broke them, forgiveness and love will heal them. Such a perfectly light feel good read!

Oooooooh, I adored this book so much!! This writing duo have created a brilliant storyline and characters that I truly fell in love with. Jolene and Zacks story was emotional, steamy and it had me hooked from the get-go. Tenuously linked to PLAYBOY PILOT (featuring a “blink and you’ll miss him” appearance from Carter) this was a perfect addition to the CHC world.

LAYOVER LOVER, by the talented duet authors Jeannine Colette & Lauren Runow, is a delightful second-chance romance. There is a lot of heartache and missed time in the ten years they were apart. But fate puts them together in the backseat of a shared Uber car. Maybe finally giving them a chance to get answers and closure.

Jolene Davies and Zack Hunt were high school sweethearts that were deeply in love. They thought they would be together forever. They grew up in the small town of Dixon. It is over an hour drive from San Francisco. In Dixon everyone knows everybody else. And gossip is the main entertainment. When unforeseen tragedy hits this young couple, it is Jolene that runs away, without even a goodbye. This leaves Zack as a stoic hero who was badly wronged. Jolene was the hated town villain. After ten years pass by, they both thought they would never see each other again.

Fate can be fickle. When they both need a Uber ride home from the San Francisco airport, after ten years they come face to face. Their mutual shock and Zach's anger made this reunion a difficult one. They are different adult people. She is a flight attendant who has traveled the world and he is a bar owner. He also helps his dad in his auto shop, and still calls Dixon home. Dixon is a place Jolene swore she would never return to. Never say never! This makes for quite a story. One thing hasn't changed and that is their attraction and feelings for each other.

This would be a good story to read if you need a break from our present quarantined world. Today you wouldn't even be able to share an Uber car to begin with. You could not travel the way Jolene had done: “I've seen almost every major city in the United States. Been to Paris, Rome, Munich and London. I walked the Great Wall of China and rode an elephant in Thailand. Scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef and the sunset in Fiji was heavenly.” They both looked forward to seeing the Northern Lights. Zach's busy bar would now be closed. If you want to enjoy a story without the Coronavirus, then here is a getaway book for you. I enjoyed it!

Another one for my liked it but didn't love it shelf.

This was a sweet enough read. Jolene and Zack was nice enough. Their story was interesting enough. I liked it.

The blurb pretty much tells you what you will get in the story so I won't go on about it.

I will say....

That I think I am to old to be reading about the love lives of 28 year old characters. Seeing as I have a 28 year old daughter myself. :) I'm not THAT old!!!! But you know what I mean. LOL

Do I dare say there was a too much sex? I sure thought so. They would argue then have sex. They would meet for drinks then have sex. They would visit with the parents then have sex. They would go for a drive in the truck then have sex. You get the picture right!!! And believe me I know that works for a lot of people. I get it. It worked for me at one time. But I realize that it doesn't work for me now.

You are probably thinking I should have set it aside and move on. But there was a part of me that had to find out if these two got their second chance. So I read on.

Like I said. A nice enough read and I thought the epilogue was the best part!

Ten years apart have changed Jolene and Zack…
…so was it bad timing or fate that put them back in each other’s paths?

When 18 year old Jolene left the small town of Dixon abruptly, she felt she HAD to go. It was no longer her home, and she felt she had to spread her wings. Unfortunately, when she left town and pursued her dream as a flight attendant, she left heartbreak in her wake.

“…no matter where you go or turn, you’ll always end up at home…”
“You just need to know where home is.”

Zack tried to move on. He tried to forget about what he and Jolene had and the future they might have had, but she never left his thoughts…

“A hummingbird is not only beautiful, but it is the symbol of the pursuit of our dreams. It can travel up to two thousand miles to reach its destination. That is you. My hummingbird.”

I loved all of the characters that were written into this storyline! The secrets, the family, friends, extras…GAH! Everything about this book was absolutely fantastic! I whole-heartedly LOVED the storyline of this second-chance romance written by the duo of Jeannine Colette and Lauren Runow! I felt this book SO deeply and OMG … I had tears!

"When you think with your heart, you're only loving someone for the way they make you feel inside. To live for someone means you exist for everything that life throws your way."

This book gave me ALL THE FEELS! This was such an incredible read and I would give it more than 5 stars if I could!

**Also...I loved the Sexton brothers's mentions in this! Lauren and Jeannine...thank you for your amazing writing!!!

For the last ten years, she has flown the friendly skies and he kept the home fires burning.

I can't even remember when I've last read a book with a flight attendant as the main female character. So I was a bit excited to find that to be the case here. A decade apart and not a lot of back story, there's enough to get the gist of where this story's going. The San Francisco airport and a shared Uber ride gives Zack and Jolene a big jolt packed with harsh memories. And the turbulence continues as their story takes flight.

Lots of extra-special secondary characters give this one so many additional warm and cuddly feel-goods. From take-off to landing, this is a really fun-to-read second chance at love story. One that is certain to leave readers smiling ear-to-ear.

It's fast-paced and an ending that's a little bit rushed, but overall it warmed my heart and put a smile on my face. It does have a nice Epilogue to wrap it up nicely.

This was ADORABLE. Ok, I thought that this was going to be fun and sexy, but this had plenty of heavy emotions too! I really love second chance romances, especially one that ended with a lot of hurt and unresolved feelings. Jolene and Zach's second chance story was non traditional, fun and sexy at the same time. I will definitely be reading more by Jeannine.

Some people say that you can never go back home again. Those same people may say lightening doesn’t strike the same place twice.

Those people have not read this story and have not met Jolene or Zack.

Their story is a second chance at Love and a story of healing and forgiveness but it is also a story of Fate and how things guide you to where you were meant to be.

These talented Authors together again wrote another fun to read adventure -Five Flying Stars!

Layover Lover by Jeannine Colette & Lauren Runow is the story of Zack Hunt and Jolene 'Jo' Davies. Layover Lover is a part of the Cock Hero Club Series but can be read as a standalone book. Zack and Jolene at one time were young and in love but Jolene left him. Jolene life has been full of travel and adventure since become a flight attendant but has always lacked something in her life. When she is forced to stay back in her old stumping ground she happens to meet Zack again. Zack is no longer the young boy she left but is a successful man who has struggled getting past the hurt Jolene gave him. Neither are excited to see each other at first but then they both want to show each the life they have and ones they could of had. Will this be their second chance at love? Enjoyed their story.

Layover Lover is one of the stories in the Cocky Hero Club inspired by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward's Cocky Bastard series. This second chance romance was a sweet, easy read and you will love the characters Jolene and Zach. After not seeing each other for 10 years, the chemistry between them was still evident when they did meet again and it only strengthen the more time they spent together. This is a story about letting go of the past and looking forward to the future, about second chances and about realizing everyone has dreams and sometimes those dreams change. The story was a quick read and I enjoyed it. It was a good addition to the Cocky hero Club and I would recommend it to all lovers of second chance romance.

I could not get enough of Jolene and Zack’s story. This is a sweet second chance romance that will have you swooning over these characters non stop. I can completely understand both reasonings behind Jolene and Zack’s decisions for the choices they have both taken but at the same time I want to ask them why at times too. These two authors have collaborated so seamlessly and have created a strong storyline from beginning until the very end.

ARC received for an honest review

Layover Lover was a wonderful second chance tale, and a perfect read to get me through the iso-blues.

Zack and Jolene (♯ Jolene, Jolene Joleeeeene - sorry, had to do that) are a couple that the universe is trying to tell them that they need to be together, yet they have to fight for their second chance.

The fates intervene and they are back in each others worlds after a decade their hearts are back, wildly beating for each other

I liked that there was nothing too OTT about their getting back together. Their is spark and attraction out the wazoo, yet even though they have their issues and differences, in the end the act like adults, no matter how painful things are at times.

One thing though - I was jealous that our lovelies got to go on trip - I had to cancel my trip for later in the year, and that bummed me out a bit lol.

Layover Lover left me with a smile on my face - something that I need these days.

I have never read this duo before and so I am enjoying reading these Cocky Heroes that are giving me the opportunity to meet new authors. Some time you can enjoy a small town where everyone knows you but some time you can hate them. Zack and Jolene were highschool sweethearts til something happens that Jolene runs without even giving Zack a deserved goodbye. This town hates her and she was determined to never return, however things change and you have to believe in fate when these two come to be at the same airport and sharing the same Uber ten years later, and now it is time for mending broken hearts and coming to a conclusion since both of them never got over the other.

rcvd and ARC at no cost to author...voluntarily reviewed with my own thoughts and opinions.

I loved the duo of Jeannine Colette and Lauren Runow so was excited to see they had another co-write together. I loved Playboy Pilot but didn't know what to expect from writing into the Cocky Hero World. Well it was fantastic! I just loved this book so much and was smiling many times in the book.
The story is a second chance, small town, single dad romance all rolled into one. Jolene left Zach at Eighteen without another word. Zach was heartbroken and never got over her. Filled with sad memories of her family and what once was, Jolene leaves their small town and follows her dreams to travel the world. Neither has gotten over the other, and when fate steps in and they have a layover together, sparks fly, chemistry ignites and feelings resurface.
Can these two former high school sweethearts find the courage to fight for what they want, and give each other a second chance?
What I love so much in a book is when I care and connect with the characters. I loved Jolene and Zach and really wanted them to get their happy ending.
For fans of them, there is a surprise cameo thrown into the book.
For fans of Penelope Ward and Vi Keeland, you will love Layover Lover! It has what you would expect from them and you will become fans of Jeannine and Lauren if you are not yet.
5 starts for this writing duo!

As soon as I saw this book was available for purchase, I bought it! Jeannine knows I am a HUGE fan of hers and I couldn't wait for this book and her collaboration with Lauren Runow.

This is a second chance romance, single (hot) dad, with some small town charm, and a lot of miscommunication.

Zach and Jolene were high school sweethearts, sharing their dreams and goals, with plans for their future. But when Jolene's life is ripped apart, she does the only thing she thinks is possible. She runs. She becomes a flight attendant and begins traveling the world with no thoughts of returning home after leaving under the worst circumstances without a word to anyone. I got it. But she was actually searching for something that had been right in front of her all along.

Ten years later (yes, ten years!), fate intercedes and she finds herself in a shared Uber with none other than Zach. I think he handled it better than I would have. They find themselves spending some time together and there is no denying the connection between them is still there! But, their lifestyles were definitely not the same, with Jolene travelling up to 20 days a month. She felt there was no way things could work for them.

Loved the book - such a great, feel good read! That Epilogue - YAY!!! And many of the secondary characters played a huge part in their lives...Luke, Nonna, Zach's father, and even Stella.

I highly recommend you read this one!

Jolene left the small town of Dixon, CA, as soon as she turned 18, without a backward glance. She had lost everything she held dear except her high school lover, Zach, who refused to leave. His parents needed him and he didn't feel the wanderlust pull Jolene did. So, without a note or a goodbye, she took off. Figured she'd never see him again.

Ten years later, Jolene is a Flight Attendant, whose flight is grounded in San Francisco. What are the odds that she would end up in an Uber share with an all grown up more handsome than ever Zack? An angry but still beautiful Zack. And when he asks her to get off at the bar he owns to give each other the answers to questions each may have, she does. There is still this tremendous amount of chemistry between them and as they find out more about the years apart and the reasons behind Jolene leaving, they gain more peace and understanding.

Zack takes care of her with a medical problem and she has more time off. As they are together, going back to Dixon, talking, memories return and and they feel what they were to each other and why they could never find anyone else to measure up. The sexual tension is off the charts and and I was cheering for them to get their act together! They belonged together like no one's business!! Bringing Austin into the book was cool, too! And also Zack's surprise, I wasn't real happy at first but I warned up. The Hummingbird *sigh* I love the reference! Them getting their HEA was everything! This book had all the feels!!!

This is such a great book by this amazing duo, I love everything they write. I loved the Sexton Brothers, but I have to say, I think this one is my new favorite! The Epilogue was great, and especially the Bonus Epilogue! I am such a lover of Epilogues! Ten Amazing Stars!

OKAY … This is my absolute favorite of favorites and it can never be matched! Seriously, there is absolutely nothing not to like and days later I am still smiling from the sheer enjoyment of it all! I felt so at ease reading this duo that I had to double check to make sure I had not read either of them before because who is this comfortable with a new author from the first words on a page?!?! ME, THAT’S WHO! *swoon* If you’re a lover of second chances, this story is for YOU. If you love small town vibes and/or single parent tropes, this story is for YOU. If you like well written story that develop perfectly and make your heart soar with likeable characters in relatable situations, this story is for YOU. So yeah, this story is for everyone! Read it now. DO IT!

Layover Lover was another fun addition to the Cocky Hero Club, and it’s one I was happy to devour. In truth, this was more of a three-point-five-star rating, and I had a debate as to whether I rounded up or down. In the end, I went with down simply because things happened too fast for me and I wanted a wee bit more depth.

Although this didn’t quite have the depth I would have liked, I fell quickly for the characters in this one and was hooked on the way things developed. Each chapter kept you hooked, with everything ensuring you fell deeper and deeper for the characters. It was fun and addictive, and it will certainly work for anyone looking for a quick read.

Although not quite enough to be rounded up, it was still well worth the read.

I love these two authors when they write a book on their own but together, I just fall in love even more! This second chance romance between first love/high school sweethearts is definitely a great addition to your TBR!

Jolene and Zack had an abrupt ending to their relationship at the end of their teen years. Fast forward years later, Jo is a busy flight attendant and on a layover and the last thing she expected was to see her ex sharing an Uber together. Resentment, anger comes with their reunion but it sets waves of them being around each other’s orbit again. Their chemistry and memories come flooding back. Is this just a layover fling or will this ground Jolene home permanently?

I loved these two and their connection. They were so 🔥🔥 together and Zack was so swoony as heck😍. We get to see a little bit of Carter from Playboy Pilot, still cute as ever!

It’s been a decade since Jolene left her hometown and the man she loved behind to pursue her dreams of travelling and new experiences which her job as a flight attendant allows her to do. Although she has never forgotten her first and only love the last thing she expected was to find herself sharing a Uber with him or the feelings and memories that would resurface.

Zack was devastated when Jolene left him and the life they were planning in the dust. He is a successful business owner, a loyal son and a great guy but seeing Jolene again brings up not only the pain but also the what ifs.

As they spend time together the chemistry and connection between them is stronger than ever but will this be their chance to right the wrongs of the past or will the pain and their different visions for the future be too much to overcome?

This is a heartwarming and emotional story about two people whose lives took them in different directions but when they reunite they realize that their destiny has always been with each other and it is finally their time.

Layover Lover is a cute second chance romance. It had me swooning over its characters from the beginning to the very end. My heart felt every heart break and the healing all along the way.

The reasons behind Jolene and Zack’s decisions/choices in the past are absolutely believable. Sure, you'd always love to ask "WHY?" though, but don't we always? It's always easier to see things from a different perspective, if you are not in the very same situation and are just an observer.

Jolene and Zack are intriguing and caring characters which makes it very easy to love them right from the beginning. They pull you into their world right away. I just couldn't stop reading until they got their so well deserved happy ending.

Jeannine Colette and Lauren Runow did it again. They showed off their talent for collaborated stories. After the Sexton Brothers Series I was addicted to them. So it made my heart jump with joy reading reverences to the first book "Austin". I would have loved to see Austin for real in this story, but sometimes a girl can only wish.

This was just the type of book I like...enough angst to keep you turning pages, but not enough that you want to throw it across the room :) Zack and Jolene were both hesitant to start over and answer questions as to what happened in the past, but thankfully they realized they were better off together and that there wasn't another person for them. I think Zack was the more mature of the two, and rightly so ;)

This was my first read by this author duo and I will be looking for some more by them!
