The nurses call me Dr. Heartbreaker. They say I put the hot in hot-shot cardiologist.
Not that it matters. I never stick my tongue depressor in my co-workers.
What can I say? I play by a set of personal rules.
Even if those rules eliminate 99.9% of the woman I come in contact with from my dating-pool.
Even if those rules land me on a blind date with Emily, my childhood sweetheart, a woman I hadn’t seen since I broke her heart freshmen year of college.
Let’s just say the evening was a disaster. She took one look at me, and it was…
Date over. Do not pass go. Do not collect your two-hundred dollars.
The thing is, I can’t stop thinking about her. She was my first kiss, and every other first that two people can share.
She’s the only woman I’ve ever loved.
How can I make her understand what really happened between us when she wants nothing to do with me?
How can I let her walk away again, when it could mean another ten years wondering…what if?
The answer’s simple. I can’t.
Unfortunately, the solution to my dilemma is a five-year-old Colombian girl with a deadly heart condition. The same little girl Emily’s non-profit organization brought to the United States to receive life-saving surgery.
When the chief of staff informs me, I need to improve my public image because my bedside manner sucks--not THAT bedside manner. I’m just fine between the sheets, thank you very much—I agree to perform the girl’s operation…
Because spending more time with Emily is worth the risk. Even if it means I have to break every rule in my playbook.
Even if it means destroying myself in the process.
I may be a sap, but I’ll do anything for a second chance with the woman who’s owned my heart since the fourth-grade.
Kathryn M. Hearst is a southern girl with a love of the dark and strange. She has been a story teller her entire life, as a child she took people watching to new heights by creating back stories of complete strangers. Kate lives in North Carolina with her chocolate lab, Jolene; and two rescue pups, Jagger and Roxanne. She is a self-proclaimed nerd, raising a nerdling.
And on I go with my challenge of reading every single one of the CHC books...
DOCTOR HEARTBREAKER is Rhett and Emily’s story, and it features Simon and Bridget from BRITISH BEDMATE. I thoroughly enjoyed this story but had one little issue that really grated on me...as we all know, the character of Simon from the original book by Vi & Penelope, is British. I completely understand that every time an author recreates this character in their book he is going to be slightly different, and I fully admit that the way us Brits speak isn’t always easy to get right - but it drove me a little batty when Simon kept calling Rhett “Bloke”, as in “She’s not the waitress, Bloke. She’s a friend of ours.” - we don’t use the work like that, it’s not really a substitute for “mate”, we would say “Look at that bloke over that” as in “guy”...anyway, moving on... I loved the second chance romance/childhood sweethearts aspects of this story and felt it was really well written. I can’t even begin to imagine what a logistical nightmare it was trying to get so many authors coordinated enough to write all these brand new characters, while making sure they stayed true to the originals that would appear in each book - but, I think they’ve done an incredible job and am thoroughly enjoying meeting all these new members of the CHC world.
Doctor Heartbreaker started well: the second chance romance of childhood sweethearts. But there was SO MUCH GOING ON for a book barely over 200 pgs!! 1. Childhood sweethearts that break up a in a very painful/traumatic way 2. Tragedy on BOTH SIDES 3. A child fighting for her life 4. An evil ex-wife 5. An obstinate colleague who doesn't take no for an answer 6. Panic attacks 7. Work issues
The book could have worked well if you only had to deal with issue #1. There was enough baggage for them both after the way they broke up. But that's completely glossed over - there isn't even a discussion about it - and about 65% of the way, you discover there was no reason for him to destroy his life by tying himself to the albatross that was the ex-wife. He was a DOCTOR and this isn't the 50s!!! There was NO REASON whatsoever for him to There was no explanation as to why he made that stupid decision and the fact is, nobody is that nice that they would give up the love of their life to try to be gentlemanly. Note to the author: there's something called "characterization"...when characters behave in strange ways, you have to find a way for the reader to believe it. But the author didn't even try and just expect us to go with it.
And then, the drama at the end was just drama for the sake of it. I was rolling my eyes so hard that I wonder how they didn't come off.
The best part of the story was the narration. Christian Fox rocks. The female narrator is good too, but you know I have a thing for the guys. :)
So far this one also wasn't my favorite.. Rhett and Emily were childhood friends then lovers then nothing. Thru a break, yup Ross and Rachel, did we learn nothing.on a break Rhett goes to party wakes up with Lila who claims baby is hiss and poor Emily is broken and leaves, I probably would have too. Years later they are thrown together, will their be forgiveness. I appreciated the work with children and honestly that is what pushed me thru but at times it killed me.
Rcvd and ARC at no cost to author. Voluntarily reviewed with my own thoughts and opinions.
This was a sweet second chance romance for Emily and Rhett who were childhood best friends that became much more only for Rhett only to break Emilys heart now fast forward several years later they see each other again when they are set up on a blind date only when Emily sees its Rhett she wants nothing to do with it.
Doctor Heartbreaker ended up giving me more than I’d initially anticipated. In fact, the more I read the more I got from it. Not only did I fall deeper and deeper for the characters, but the emotion of this one hit hard.
In truth, I expected this to be a rather predictable second chance romance. Although it had all the elements you would expect from such a story, it also contained plenty to make it stand out. It was packed with details that had me falling for the characters and the story, with the details ensuring I could not put this one down. It wrapped around me, and I did not want to let go.
All in all, there was so much more to this one than I’d thought, and I loved it.
I enjoyed this second chance romance, the story line was interesting, the characters were likable the only thing that bugged me was at the beginning Emily had spent 10 years avoiding him and within a couple of days she was living with him and in love seemed a little fast after living without him for 10 years. All over this was a sweet read.
4.5 Stars for Doctor Heartbreaker (A Cocky Hero Club Novel) This is Rhett and Emily’s story and that means catching up with Bridget and Simon from British Bedmate. Kathryn M Hearst is a new author to me but after reading Doctor Heartbreaker that’s going to change because I’m really left wondering why she hasn’t crossed my radar before now... Rhett and Emily have a history, they grew up together, their mums were best friends and they enjoyed many firsts as boyfriend and girlfriend but the timing wasn’t right and when Rhett made a big mistake they went their seperate ways, fate works in mysterious ways and now 10 years later they find themselves thrown together helping a sick child with life saving surgery, will the timing be right this time around or will the pain from the past be just to much to overcome..... I loved the characters in this book and I loved the feels I got from this great read. It’s a story that captivated me from the first page to the last line and it’s a book I highly recommend to all romance lovers. Looking forward to reading more from this author.
As children Rhett and Emily were friends and neighbors and over time their feelings for each evolved into love. They were planning a future together until one night ended everything and for the last ten years their lives ventured down different paths until fate has brought them together once again.
Emily works for a company who has transported Paolo to the US for life saving heart surgery and Rhett happens to be the doctor who will be performing the surgery. Not only do they find themselves having to work together to save her life they also find themselves as roommates. Neither of them have forgotten the love they shared but will this be their second chance or are they destined to end in heartbreak for the second time?
The time that Rhett and Emily have been apart hasn’t been easy for either one of them but sometimes things happen for a reason. They have come back into each other’s lives at the perfect time where they can appreciate what they have and are willing to do whatever is necessary to protect it.
I am a romantic can't help it and I love a good romance story and for me 'Doctor Heartbreaker' was that a very good romance book and a great addition to the 'Cocky Hero Club'!
This is my first story by Kathryn M. Hearst but it won't be my last delve in fact I went straight on to Kindle Unlimited and downloaded 'Absinthe Minded' another of her books.
"The people you love the most can cause you the greatest amount of pain"
Never a truer word said for background to this book - Rhett and Emily were child friends; lived next to each other and their moms were best friends. As they got older they became boyfriend and girlfriend and were each other firsts. But all the planning and what they were going to do together went out the window when they were on a break and Rhett got Lila pregnant (sounds a bit like a Rachel and Ross plot). Emily left broken heart and joined the Army and Rhett married and divorced Lila within 2 years of being married.
Rhett and Emily are about to reunite again after 10 years - both with battle scars and old hurts that still run deep. Emily jobs see's her bring sick children to the US for life saving medical care and her new case 5 year old Paola from Colombia is very sick and her only hope is life saving surgery; one that Rhett does not want to it - he removed himself from looking after children a long time ago. Em won't give up without a fight and she knows under the wall that Rhett has built is still the man she feel in love with all those years ago.
Rhett has not only missed Em the girlfriend he had more importantly missed Em his best friend. Can Rhett and Emily find their way back together and become the two halves of the whole that they were always meant to be and at the same time save the life of one very special little girl!
I was given this book as an arc for an honest review
Rhett and Emily have more baggage than a 747 has cargo and after not seeing each others for years are thrust together pretty darn closely in a heartbreaking and heartwarming tale. I liked the characters together, though I did feel they were a bit wishy washy in a couple of situations. BUT the two were BFFs since they were in preschool and then were each others' firsts and I definitely have never been in that situation before, so it could be extremely justified. The doctor aspect and reasons why the two were pushed back together was FASCINATING. All in all, I enjoyed the book and reading about Rhett and Emily, these two definitely have complicated pasts and things are not easy for them, but it is clear that they have something special. 4 outta 5 stars from me!
PS: Thank you to Kathryn M. Hearts, Cocky Hero Club, and Give Me Books for allowing me an advanced copy of the book to read and review honestly.
Great read from a new-to-me author in the Cocky Hero Club. Doctor Heartbreaker was a wonderfully crafted second chance romance between childhood best friends.
Emily and Rhett grew up next door to each other and fell in love in the sweetness of youth. As they grew older, life and drama split them apart but you never forget your first love. Years have past but they're thrust together again when Rhett is chosen to perform a potentially life saving surgery on a young child in Emily's care. While in close proximity, they get to know each other again and remember all they loved about each other.
Fascinating story about a young child's medical condition, two friends who are so much more than friends and all the things trying to keep them apart. Great read. This was my first book by this author but it won't be my last.. I have already purchased the book found in the preview in the back of the book!

This was a great second chance romance. Rhett and Emily were so young when they met and were friends that turned into high school sweethearts. Then while in college and they were on a break, Rhett was stupid and met someone else who took advantage of him. This ended his relationship with Emily for a decade.
Then by chance they are set up as each other’s blind dates by our amazing Simon and Bridget. It takes a while for Emily to let down her walls she built around her heart when it comes to Rhett. But she has to let him in since he will be the surgeon for the little girl her company has brought to the states for heart repair.
I loved the way Emily spoke up to Rhett’s ex-wife. The way that woman still controlled him after 8 years apart infuriated me. I wish things were handled a bit harsher towards the ex than what they were.
Really really enjoyed this book. Was able to read it in one sitting.
Doctor Heartbreaker by Kathryn M. Hearst is the story of Rhett and Emily. This book is a part of the Cocky Hero Club Series but can be a standalone book if you wish to do so. Rhett and Emily had one time been friends that turned into more but during their college days Rhett ended up being a part of something that hurt Emily which in turned broke them up. Now in their present day, Rhett is called a Heart breaker but is a successful doctor. Emily is a part of the organization that helps needed kids get the surgeries that they need. They end up meeting up again which allows them to clear the air and maybe to get back together.
Another new author for me, I really enjoyed this story of second chances. Rhett and Emily knew each as kids and were even boyfriend and girlfriend but things happen that drive them apart and they each move on with their lives. Now, set up on a blind date by friends, they meet again. This was a quick read and while there is a bit of OW drama, it doesn't take away from the story of the two main characters getting back together, but can they make it work? Loved it!
A really great second chance romance between two child hood friends. It features my favorite of the original Cocky Hero Club couples with Simon and Bridget. I am very much enjoying all of these great authors and their additions to the amazing world that Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward have created.
**I was provided with an advanced readers copy of this book in exchange for my fair and honest review**
I love stories that have a kismet quality to them. That’s what endeared me to this story. A woman who works to find ways to save children who need life saving surgeries and a man with a means and capability to accomplish that … kismet! Throw in the two have known each other since they were children and a whole lot of other history between them and you have a poignant story that will make your heart sing!
An apple a day keeps the doctor away but honestly I don't know anyone that wouldn't want to climb Rhett like a tree. Rhett and Emily were childhood best friends that became more only to be torn apart. 10 years later they run into each other again and the sparks are still there. I love second chance romances and thoroughly enjoyed Doctor Heartbreaker.
Wowser. This story had me hooked. I couldn't put it down, the story pulled me in right from the beginning and I honestly loved everything about it. I found that the characters were brilliant and easy to read about. I can't recommend this book enough.
This is the first book I've read from this author. With that said, I am a huge fan now. I loved this second chance romance. Emily and Rhett grew up together and loved each other at a young age. Due to circumstances and heartbreak they went separate directions. Emily works for Caring Hearts which is a non profit organization that helps those in need of medical attention get the help they need. Rhett is a cardiologist who is amazing at his job. The situation with the little girl Emily is helping needs a life changing heart surgery that Rhett is forced to perform. Let's just say these two end up spending lots of time together and the old sparks are shooting off like rockets again. This book brought out so many emotions. It felt real to me. I was rooting for the little girl. Kathryn M Hearst you certainly know how to pull at the heart strings.
Second chance romance give us all hope that a once broken heart can always be mended and brought right. For Emily and Rhett, Love was cut short and hearts were broken, now after 5 years and a bit of fate they have a chance to mend their broken hearts and be together again. Passion and chemistry fill the pages of this romance that will live for ever in your mind begging to be read over and over again. An amazing read worthy of the CHC.
I loved that Emily and Rhett received a second chance. Both have experienced heartbreak and loss. I loved witnessing them rediscover the love they once shared. This was the first book I've had the pleasure of reading, one of the benefits of the cocky hero club. It won't be the last, Kathryn had me captivated in this sweet, swoony, little angsty read.
This was a second chance romance of Rhett and Emily. They meet again after many years from him breaking her heart. They come together again for a little girl. This book was amazing in every way. These two were made for eachother and it just took a little bit longer.
Holy this was an intense emotional read forsure. This is my first read from this author and won't be the last. Loved every page. Rhett and Emily have loved each other since forever, but I don't think they had the timing was quite right. After a chance meeting and possibly a miracle, they reunited. Damn this book pulled all the feels out of me.
First book by Kathryn M. Hearst and it was a sweet story. The story definitely took you on an emotional ride with a child with a heart condition that has low percentage rates of surviving a surgery, and then Rhett and Emily’s past break-up that still haunts them to this day. But you will also get a lot of laugh out loud moments, romance and steam. Overall, I definitely recommend this book and look forward to reading more from this author.
This was such a sweet second chance romance. Rhett and Emily grew up as BFFs that turned to more. But then things changed and they were driven apart. Years later their paths cross on a blind date and they end up getting a second chance. That is a very oversimplified plot summary. There is so much else going on with Paola and her heart condition (the child Emily brought from Colombia that needs a lifesaving surgery performed by Rhett) all kind is drainage/ trouble from Rhetts Ex and a set of meddling mothers pushing them together. And that ending was perfect, So sweet I couldn’t ask for more.
