Beauty and the Beefcake (Copper Valley Thrusters Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 6,710 ratings

Ares Berger is completely, totally, and in all other ways off-limits.

He’s my brother’s teammate. He speaks even less than his pet monkey. (Yes, I mean
monkey. That’s not a euphemism.) He’s stubborn, injured, silent, broody, and unfortunately, my new roommate.

Yes, yes, it’s lovely to have another person in the house when my ex-boyfriend starts making threats. And fine, the monkey is amusing. But my real problem with having Ares Berger right down the hall?

He’s intriguing. And undeniably attractive. And the more time we spend together, the more I realize this silent giant has more to say than anyone gives him credit for.

And his sense of humor?

Someone catch me.

I’m falling.

I’m falling
hard.

But how can I convince a man who’s never truly been seen that I’m the one who wants to not only know him, but also love him?

Beauty and the Beefcake is a vegan-friendly standalone romantic comedy featuring an athlete whose vocabulary is the only thing smaller than a hockey puck, a book smart but aimless hockey lover, a dilapidated old house that may or may not be haunted, and no cheating or cliffhangers.

Pippa Grant wanted to write books, so she did.

Before she became a USA Today and #1 Amazon bestselling romantic comedy author, she was a young military spouse who got into writing as self-therapy. That happened around the time she discovered reading romance novels, and the two eventually merged into a career. Today, she has more than 30 knee-slapping Pippa Grant titles and nine published under the name Jamie Farrell.

When she’s not writing romantic comedies, she’s fumbling through being a mom, wife, and mountain woman, and sometimes tries to find hobbies. Her crowning achievement? Having impeccable timing for telling stories that will make people snort beverages out of their noses. Consider yourself warned.

Felicity is hilarious with different voices. She is such a great special person and it was sad to see she was treated badly for this. It was wonderful the connection she developed with Ares and how they could both learn to appreciate how being unique is a strength together. Ares is such a big misunderstood protective softy. I loved how Felicity took the time to see him. Good read as always with heaps of laughs.

Goes to show that this couple were oddballs but saw though to each others heart. A perfect couple with a perfect ending. Loved the puppets.

Before starting this I wasn't sure the author was going to make Ares charismatic, but now all I can say is, "Wow".

The sense of 2 people who really see each other, and have a genuine connection came through so strongly that I just fell in.love with both characters.

Can definitely be read as a standalone, but I found it really enjoyable to have a bit more of the backstory , so recommend reading Zeus and Joey's story first.

I'm not only enjoying getting to know all the characters as the series goes on, the comedy lines from the "beauty" made me genuinely laugh out loud.

I enjoy Pippa Grant for her funny writing and quirky characters, but I enjoyed Beauty and the Beefcake more than most because of its emotional depth.

Ares is a wonderful character, slowly revealing his big heart and kindness, as he struggles with learning he has more than hockey to offer the world.

As Felicity also tries to work out how to navigate a world which is less than welcoming to her intelligence and talent; Ares learns to see past her extrovert personality to the capable person underneath.

I particularly appreciated man-mountain Ares realising that possessiveness and over-protection are not the hallmarks of a healthy relationship.

I always appreciate a hero who is all-in without having to defend his alpha status for chapters. As always, the girl pals and their loyalty, a feature of Pippa Grant’s books, add a to the appeal of the story. Add a devious monkey and a donkey and you have more than enough enjoyment.

The companion book about Ares brother Zeus and hell-for-leather pilot Joey is a great read as well, but the warmth of Ares book makes it a favourite of mine.

Great book with great depth of character development. A monosyllabic brute and a motormouth ventriloquist? Add a prepubescent monkey and three argumentative puppets, an overprotective brother and a grandmother who won’t let death get in the way of making her opinions known... This book delves into a lot more than the obvious assumptions of what we see in people.

Pippa Grant brings us another fun and laugh filled story in Beauty and the Beefcake. There is so much I liked about this book. Loki, the emotional support monkey is back, Felicity’s friends are a hoot, the writing has plenty of funny quips, banter and dialogue. There’s also a serious vein running throughout as neither Ares or Felicity are taken seriously. Their exteriors may be silly and carefree but under the surface there are deep wells of emotion and thoughts.

I cannot pinpoint why but I admit I did struggle with this book. At times, I found Ares’ abruptness and lack of speech frustrating, but then I’d read his inner thoughts and be incredibly touched. Felicity was a great heroine but her ventriloquism act was a bit freaky, no matter how cute the characters are, and Felicity’s were sweet. It’s not overly long in comparison to Pippa’s other books, so I can’t say it dragged. The writing style is similar, so it’s not that either.

There was so much that I liked. Yet there is that pesky ‘but’ that stops me from liking it as much as Pippa Grant’s other books. I am chalking this one up as an “It’s not you, it’s me” situation and will look forward to the next Pippa Grant book.

Another great book from Pippa Grant. She knows how to put romance, caring and all other feelings in her books. On top of that is her great sense of humour... She makes me tear up, melt and laugh my head off with every book I read. Keep them coming Pippa!

E me surpreendi e me emocionei como em nenhum outro. Os dois são únicos e diferentes e se complementam. Um enxerga o outro verdadeiramente e valorizam. Foi muito lindo de se ver!

I love how Pippa Grant can have you laughing one moment and choked up the next. You can get completely lost in the story, so believable. Anyone who loves a sassy heroine and strong silent type this book is for you. Can’t wait to read the next book.

With a hero who articulates in grunts and single words and a heroine who talks enough for six people, you wouldn’t think this book would be so enchanting, hilarious and holy-hades-hot, but that is the mastery and magic of Pippa Grant. Ares easily already had a place in my heart from the previous books, that whole still waters thing really piquing my curiosity, making me eager to learn more about him, but Felicity was a virtual unknown. Yeah, her throwing her voice at Manning's dinner party was a hilarious scene in “Royally Pucked,” but her being the sister of the Thrusters’ goalie, Nick Murphy, and a talented ventriloquist was about all we knew of her before this book.

One of the things that makes this book so great is the dual POV. The Ares chapters are the most concise I’ve seen, but he says a lot with a few words. Felicity more than makes up for it with her multiple puppet voices. Actually, that’s not really fair. Even without the puppets, the characters are omnipresent with Felicity and never hesitate to interject themselves in conversations or just talk among themselves. Okay, I know that sounds schizophrenic because the characters exist only in Felicity's mind which she then manifests through ventriloquist puppets, but they're actually strong, secondary characters in the book, and it's fascinating to watch Felicity use them to sort through puzzlements, argue with herself, provide comic relief, and express herself (and sometimes Ares) through these characters.

It makes me wonder if this isn’t another glimpse behind the curtain of Pippa Grant. If the characters of her books are as alive to Ms. Grant as Felicity's are to her, it explains why Grant's characters are so realistic for the reader. It's not only as vivid as watching a movie play out on the big screen, but it's like sitting in the same room with them. But it’s even more than that because I never laugh so hard or read such creative cursing and other made up expressions as when I read one of Grant's books. She puts the “com" in rom-com, but there's still plenty of heart, emotion and tender moments, so reading her work is an all-consuming, fully engaged, visceral experience. Somehow, she manages the perfect push and pull between snarky and tender, and humor and heart. She leaves her readers hung over on these amazing characters, with a stitch in their sides and a huge happy sigh.

If this book does nothing else, it gives hope that there’s someone for everyone. Not someone perfect, but someone whose quirks and crazy are the perfect complement for that one person. Ares and Felicity are that person for each other. Felicity is a super smart genius with four college degrees but still looking for the place she fits in life. Ares personifies a scary, dumb brute but Felicity sees deeper, clear down to his soul. Felicity says it best, that being with Ares “isn’t about power. Strength. Ritual. It’s about a magnetic force of connection. It’s about butterfly wings in my belly. It’s about craving, but also about fitting.” And with Felicity, Ares finds a place he fits, saying “I’m finally where I’m supposed to be. Where I never thought I’d find. A home. For my heart.” “Everything. She’s my everything. The last piece to my puzzle.” For a man of few words, he makes every one count.

It's always bittersweet when I finish reading a Grant book. It's supremely satisfying to get more of these incredible characters, but I’m always sad to get to the last page. I don’t know how long this series will continue, but into infinity would suit me. If there are a hundred books in this series, it won’t be enough for me. If you’ve read any books in this series, you certainly don’t need my encouragement to buy this one since you're probably already reading it. If you've not familiar with this author or series, grab this one today. It sounds corny to say a romance novel has the potential to be life altering, but Grant's work does. The tenderness will heal heartaches, the happily ever after journey will inspire hope, and the humor will brighten a dreary day.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely, funny, sexy story.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The story of Ares and Felicity is by turns witty, funny and moving. Ares is the twin brother of Zeus, another hockey star but whereas Zeus is confident and outgoing, Ares is quiet and rather introverted. Ares doesn’t say much - as a young child he was deaf. It was only after he had grommets fitted that he could hear & had to learn to communicate in a whole new way. His twin brother is one of the few people who knows him well and understands that he’s far from stupid. This gentle giant is smart and has learned to read people well. When he meets Felicity, he feels he’s not good enough for her but she disagrees. She sees beyond the terse sentences to the real man. He may be terrifying on the ice but there is far more to him than that. She learns to love this complex, wonderful, sexy man with the quirky sense of humour just as much as he loves her.
