Shameless King (Kings of Rittenhouse) Kindle Edition
After a blow out in our past, Makenna Halstead and I were happy to never have to cross paths again. Except life has a way of knocking you in the teeth with a puck when you least expect it.
She hasn’t just returned to my life, she crashed into it like a wrecking ball...into my college kingdom, into my class, and smack dab into the seat next to mine. My new lab partner to be exact.
For years we hated each other... I may be King on the ice, but she is the Ice Queen. She has no problem calling me out, doesn’t back down, and her piercing blue eyes have me picturing more than than just my arms wrapped around her. Now we’re stuck with each other and there’s no getting around that fact that we have to work together.
My hockey career hangs in the balance. Problem? Oh, yeah. but I can’t deny it. I want her. More than I ever thought I could want a woman.
I’ve got one semester–only four months–to convince her everything she thought about me was wrong. Will my queen let me prove to her I’m the King she can’t live without? Only one way to find out...
Shameless King is a steamy, enemies to lovers college sports romance.

About the author

Maya Hughes, that's me!, can often be found sneaking in another chapter while hiding in the bathroom from her kids! :-) I’m a romance writer who loves taking inspiration from everyday life, namely my husband and biggest fan. Inspiration also strikes when I hear a song, meet someone new or daydream while at soccer practice.
I’m the mom of three little ones, the wife to an amazing husband and also work full time. Some of my favorite things are cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, white wine, laughing until I can’t breathe, traveling with my family and Jeff Goldblum.

- Reviewed in Australia on 30 June 2018Verified PurchaseThis is my first full length novel by Maya Hughes and I thoroughly enjoyed it! The prequel gave us background into the characters and what I really liked is that it wasn’t repeated in the book which I find some authors do, in order to make the book appear longer which just makes me upset as I’m not getting a full length story. Anywho, I loved Declan and Mak together! Their rivalry started in High School and now Mak has transferred to a University closer to home, to be closer to her parents, and worried she’s going to bump into Declan again after all this time. Declan is playing University level Hockey and is now a senior so he doesn’t have much time left before he graduates. But life spins out of control when he’s suspended from the team due to a course he didn’t pass when he first started and of all people he is paired up with Mak, for all future assignments:( They make it work, but their relationship slowly transitions from enemies to friends to more!
I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good romance:) I’m also praying that we get more stories as I’d love to know more about all the boys that were Kings at school that played Hockey together, especially Emmett and Avery!
- Reviewed in Australia on 27 January 2020Verified PurchaseI did enjoy reading this book . Mak and Declan were great characters to get to know and love and I enjoyed the world maya created . I even liked the supporting characters mostly being Declan’s hockey team, and some glimpses of makes friends including Avery - and I am looking forward to reading the rest of the books .
Shameless king is an enemies to lovers type sports romance, that I found was a light and easy to read book.
- Reviewed in Australia on 7 August 2021Verified PurchaseI enjoyed how opposite these two and the bickering flirting thing they had going on. You could tell they were perfect for each other but it just took them awhile to figure that out. Great start to this series.
- Reviewed in Australia on 15 October 2019Verified PurchaseIf you like college, friends to lovers romances then this knee's for you. Enjoyed reading this book, no cliffhanger but I look forward to reading the next books in the series.

I love love loved this book.
Makenna and Declan were amazing together, the banter between them was fun, their chemistry was off the charts and their sexy scenes were H-O-T.
I definitely could not put this down and I devoured it!
I loved seeing all the banter between the secondary characters as well and I can't wait to continue on with this series.
- Reviewed in Australia on 26 July 2018Really enjoyed reading this book and the prequel. It was my first book by this author and I will be reading more. Loved Mak and Declan as a couple, they really helped each other be better. It was great to see them overcome the things holding them both back and find their happiness. Can’t wait to read about the next King.
- Reviewed in Australia on 28 June 2018I have read several books by Maya Hughes and enjoyed them all and Shameless King certainly didn’t disappoint. We meet Declan McAcoy, he’s hot, he’s sexy, he’s an Ice Hockey hero, he’s the highest goal scorer in Kings of Rittenhouse Prep history and he was voted the Biggest Flirt, every girl wants him, everyone is impressed with him - well not everyone one. We also meet Makenna Halstead her and Declan have never been friends, infact they had a big fight in high school and if they never saw each other ever again it would be too soon. Makenna has had a bit of a tough life and after spending some time away at home from school, where she’s studying to be a doctor, she returns home and to the school closer. Things don’t go well, Declan has to take a special class and is not allowed to train with the hockey team until his grades improve and as Makenna has transferred back to this school she’s also forced to take the same class and Declan. What makes it even worse is they are team together as study partners and have to complete their work together. Now this is where the story gets real interesting. These two hate the sight of each other, or do they???? Declan is known as the King on the Ice, whereas Mackenna is known as the Ice Queen. Can the King thoar the Ice Queen??? Can the Ice Queen bring the King back to reality??? Spark literally fly off the pages when these two spend time together. This book was a great read that I thoroughly enjoyed.
- Reviewed in Australia on 28 June 2018Declan is on the fast track to being the next big thing in the NFL, finishing college is a priority. When he got benched for a bad grade he never expects to find himself paired up with his high school nemesis. Makenna has goals and making it through this class together is just another step in her very planned out future, letting Declan in could destroy everything she worked for.
I liked the plot of this book, who doesn’t love a sport romance. It felt like it was drawn out longer than necessary. For me personally, I didn’t understand why it took so long to get to the obvious point, but that’s just my opinion. With that being said, I did really enjoy the book.
Declan is the love-able jock, I really enjoyed his character, he has so many layers that I wanted to peel back, he was amazing throughout this book. Makenna is so headstrong that she does come across as the Ice Princess, not letting anyone in and putting up walls that nobody even bothers to try and break down. She certainly had the ‘do not approach me’ vibe going and that was a put off for me.
The heat between these two was off the charts, I might have thought that it took too long to get to that point but once it did, boy was it on fire. The intimate moments between them showed a whole different personality to Makenna, one that I absolutely loved.
This was my first Maya book and I really liked the characters and loved the minor characters throughout. I cannot wait to continue the series with Heath and Emmett’s stories.
Shameless King had a good plot and characters, I personally felt the pace of this book was too slow for and I hope that the Author picks up the pace in the future books in the series as I can see so much potential in them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long Live the Kings!

This book took me by surprise. This series is my first experience with Maya Hughes, so I didn’t know what to expect, but since I am a big hockey romance fan, I was definitely willing to give it a chance. I am so glad I did! This book was the best surprise! It has amazing characters who grow and develop in the best of ways throughout the story, a fantastic storyline that brings all the feels, and it left me longing for more! What more could you want?
Declan and Mak are my favorite kinds of characters. They are flawed and real and relatable. They make mistakes and have struggles, but they grow and learn and develop throughout the story. They have a fantastic backstory as high school enemies who love to get under each other’s skin, but all that tension and banter morphs into so much more when they are forced to work together as partners in college. And once they start to really get to know each other, that banter quickly morphs into sparks that can’t be contained or ignored.
I like that this story took place over a longer period of time. They knew each other in high school, but they really don’t meet back up until their senior year in college. It wasn’t like things completely changed overnight. They had time to change and grow on their own before they began changing and growing together. This definitely has some elements of opposites attract, but really they aren’t completely different beneath the surface. Both of these characters have heartbreaking things from their past they are trying to deal with, and they are both determined to take care of their problems themselves. Once they are finally able to open up to one another, I love that they are able to love and support one another without having one character jump in to “fix” the other.
Not only did they have a fantastic backstory, the build to their romance was delicious. There were so many will they/ won’t they moments along the way that I was dying for them to get together by the time it happened. The tension and sparks of passion between them were undeniable, but it was clear to everyone except them that it was leading to so much more. I truly liked them both individually and wanted so much for them to embrace what could be between them, and when they finally did, it was completely worth the wait! Watching their walls come down in a way they didn’t with anyone else was perfect.
I truly loved this book. My only complaint is that I have to wait to read the next book. I fell in love with the whole crew in Kings of Rittenhouse, and my love only grew through Shameless King! I am completely interested in all of their stories, but am on the edge of my seat for Emmett and Avery in particular!! Please tell me they have a second chance coming soon! I definitely recommend starting with Kings of Rittenhouse because it is truly the perfect introduction to this series, but you won’t be lost without it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved Them!
Verified PurchaseThese two characters are beautifully written. Their enemies to lovers relationship feels so natural. Both can stand on their own two feet but together are perfect and stronger; which is what we all want from a partner.
Can't wait to read the in the series!

4.0 out of 5 stars .
Verified PurchaseMack and Declan didn't get along in highschool. They see each other in collegue because Mack transferred and ends up paired with Declan in a class. They developed a relationship but Mack gets angry because they couldn't deliver an assigment on time that caused Mack not to enter in med school. After a couple of weeks they go back together.
I gave 4 stars because it's a good story but I didn't like it. It was too long, and nothing exciting happens. I mean, I've read books about college people but this one was a bit boring, I've skipped paragraphs.
I started reading and I was already bored, till chapter 7 it turned a lit bit interesting but by chapter 12 I decided I was going to stop, but couldn't because I wanted to give it a chance and discover if it was something worthy. Unfortunately, I didn't find it.
I repeat it's not bad, but not for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Too Much Smex And Not Enough Heart
Verified Purchase⭐️⭐️⭐️.7️⃣5️⃣
I flew through the first 65% or so of this book at a rapid pace. The writing has an even tone that flows smoothly. The ansgt-filled banter was really great. There are quite a few laugh out loud moments. Then, it grew a bit boring. So, I flew through the remaining 35% just to be done with it.
There was too much sex and not enough meaningful moments between Mak and Declan. The sex overpowered the plot, making it difficult to care too much about the character's struggles. It was so overpowering that absolutely no room was left for Declan to have his moment to share with Mak anything pertaining to his 'dad'. I don't even know why the author bothered to write the dad into the story. He was basically this shadow character hovering in the background, causing grief for Declan just for appearances. There was no real point to having him there at all. He just shows up to practices and games, Declan takes notice of him while Declan thinks to himself what a shoddy presence his dad is and then nothing! The only resolution that comes from that situation is when Declan tells him off towards the end and just walks away. We don't learn what the dad was thinking because that is all there is to it. It was a big pointless nothingburger. Ridiculous!
Overall, it's a fast, fun-enough read. I'm going to give the next book a shot and see how I'm feeling about this series then. I'm on the fence with continuing. If it seems like it's going to keep on this same path of smex, smex, smex, and even more smex, I might be looking at my 1st dnf of the year. Not how I wanted to kick off 2025.
