Reese...
I made a mistake that might have ruined someone’s life. I’ve moved to Sydney to avoid the glares and the questions from the people back home, but there’s one thing I can’t run from—the guilt and pain that follows me relentlessly. All I can do is dull it with alcohol and casual sex. But then my new boss, Mr Dark and Delicious, deserted me, mid kiss, with my skirt hiked up and my shirt discarded on the alley floor. I should hate him―him and the secrets he’s keeping. But I can’t stay away. Because the pain and guilt he’s hiding mirror my own.

Low...
All she wanted was one night. That, I could do. I’m the king of casual. Love them and leave them, before they leave me. With chemistry off the scale, we couldn’t even make it home, both of us too impatient, ripping each other’s clothes off in the alleyway outside the bar. Then my phone buzzed, and one text message stopped everything. I couldn’t think. Couldn’t breathe. All I could do was run. I’m toxic, but I can’t tell her why. I can’t bear the look of horror I know would cross her face. But I also don’t know how to keep something so life altering from the woman I’m falling for. Not when I need her just to survive it.

DNF at 10%

PLEASE DO NOT READ FURTHER IF YOU DON'T WANT TO LEARN A BIG SPOILER!

The hero is bi-sexual and it feels depressing and painful to know that he has got .

Not my ideal type of romance so DNF it is!

I'd like to say a well done to Elle for writing this book. It's unlike anything I've ever read and the topics tackled are very challenging. I didn't let the reviews phase me when I bought this one because I knew that no matter what, I would love it. I understand that the topics discussed and presented in this book aren't for everyone but I still don't understand some of the hateful things I've seen about this book. I absolutely loved this book and I am so glad I bought it, along with the other books in the series.

Kudos to Elle Thorpe for telling a story I have never read before. She makes some bold choices, and I’m not surprised all that often when I read these days. This is an important story to tell, too.

It was fun to visit Australia, even through the pages of a book. I learned some new expressions and got a break from all the standard settings I'm used to.

Fresh, different, and surprising.

This story was an emotional roller-coaster from page one and grabbed me so hard. Low is not a hero I would typically go for - smooth, slick, and snarky - but as the story progressed, I felt so much for him. And Reese is a fantastic heroine, dealing with guilt so deep, she doesn't know how to dig herself out of it again. Their love and their patience were seriously inspiring, and I rooted for them all the way through the end.
The setting for this love story is so unique - a horse racing track in Sydney! It fits the characters perfectly, and the little crew of friends that Low and Reese have are the best. So many interesting stories (and so many books, hopefully!).
I can't say much more without massive spoilers, but if you like punch-in-the-gut books with off-the-hook sexy scenes, this one will be perfect for you. Can't wait for the sequel!

ONLY THE POSITIVE is not your usual love story. It starts off with Reese at a very sad and lonely place in her life, looking forward to starting a new job. It was as a bartender at Lavender Fields Racecourse. She always loved being around horses and Lavender Fields reminded her of home. A flicker of excitement lit within her for the first time in so long, when she met Low the bar manager and her new boss. This is what she needed. A new job. A new beginning. A new guy to lose herself in for a while. The past year had been one mess after another. She had barely kept her head above water. It was time for a turning point.

It was one of the longest bars that Reese had ever seen. She worked the section right next to her delicious and sexy-looking boss. She had trouble paying attention to her job, and needed to stop staring at him. He was flirty and his section was the most popular with both the woman and the men. His tip jar was over-flowing, but Reese learned from the other female employee, that they shared tips at the end of the day. By the end of her first day, she was hoping that Low would want to go home with her. They had been flirting with each other all day. But he left with someone else, and he would eventually wish he would have done differently if he only could go back.

Low had always been a love them and leave them, before they leave you, kind of guy. Maybe because Low had messed up his chance with Reese, and now that he felt he couldn't have her, that he wanted her, and not as just a friend. Maybe it was because he couldn't have her now, or maybe it was just her. They both had issues, both seemed to need each other, and had learned to open-up to each other. She needed his sunshine to keep away her storms. She wanted her light to brighten his dark. But just one text message had changed his life, and he would never be the same. Low was not perfect, but she knew she was far from perfect, too! Maybe after climbing all the mountains they could be perfect for each other. Just maybe? Definitely a different kind of love story, but I couldn't but it down till “The End!”

I read an early draft of this novel and adore Reese and Low and the OTP world Thorpe has built. Neither our hero or heroine are looking for more than a one-night-stand when they hook up one night at a racetrack bar. But an untimely phone call mid-clinch has Low horrified and running.

Reese is disconcerted to say the least. She works with Low and when he doesn't show for his shifts, she starts to worry. Though they both agreed they weren't looking for love, their chemistry is off the scale. Feelings start to happen despite their intentions and Low's reticence to even be around others. He sees himself as toxic. Reese sees more. But she has her own issues that she's run from.

What I love about this book is that despite the full-drama nature of the plot, the characters are steady and chill. Moments of humour and absolute romance pepper the pages and I wanted to give the characters a big hug.

This isn't the easiest of subject matters but Thorpe handles it with intelligence and honesty. The story is HEA and kicks off a big series. Go read this new author. You won't regret it.

This was a sweet story about two people that have hard things happen to them, and not want to tell anybody because they feel ashamed.
The chemistry between them was off the charts, and every time they were near each other, sparks flew.
This was also a heartwrenching story, and I genuinely felt for the characters when things came to light, and I wished they would make it through.
The sneak peek at the end was great too, and I can't wait for the next book.

I'm honestly not sure how I feel about this one. One minute I'm in love and the next I'm just indifferent. It's probably the direction the story took. Not one of my favorite paths to go down.

Only the positive is the first in the Only You series and a powerful first debut by Elle Thorpe. Honestly, I’m surprised that this is her first as her writing feels so flawless
I really enjoyed it. The book starts out as your typical NA storyline but then turns into oh so much more. She did a fantastic job with this storyline. One I’m surprised no one really has touched on. I felt it made this more realistic and definitely brings awareness and education on such topics.
I loved Low and Reese. Their story was difficult at times but you could feel the love which made these two perfect for each other.

This was a phenomenal read and I can’t wait for the next one

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Elle Thorpe's debut novel, Only The Positive. This book tackles some serious topics with a sensitivity and a realness that was perfectly suited to this story.

Only the Positive follows Reese our heroine, who following a tragic accident with her little sister which she feels wholly responsible for, has left everyone and everything she knows behind and fled to start a new life. Reese is drawn to a horse racecourse where she gets a job working in a bar, here she meets her boss and our Hero Low.

When we first meet Low, he is a huge flirt, we quickly learn he is a man whore and takes home a different man or woman from the bar most nights, never going for a repeat performance. After sleeping with the last waitress and then her quitting, he has hired Reese and he is immediately drawn to her.

Reese and Low acknowledge the mutual attraction and I enjoyed their flirty banter. With both Reese and Low open and confident in the use of casual sex to satisfy a need and hide their pain, they seem perfectly matched for a no strings attached fling. However in the midst of a steamy hook up in an alley, Low's phone is incessantly buzzing, he stops to check it and what he see's shatters his world sending it all up in flames. He turns and runs, leaving Reese confused, dejected and pissed off.

Following on from the failed sexcapade the story builds a strong foundation of friendship amongst the co-workers at the bar. This establishes a strong secondary character base for (hopefully) more books to follow as a part of this universe. Elle Thorpe's secondary characters are likeable, interesting and people I would want in my circle of friends.

Low and Reese can't stay away from each other for long, Their connection is obvious and well written; yet Low is now showing a new restraint to taking things further with Reese and she can't figure out why. A beautiful friendship forms between our two main characters and this element is pivotal to the evolution of the story. When Low opens up to Reese, telling her why a friendship is all he can offer her right now, she reacts like anyone would; but it isn't what Low wanted to see. Reese tracks him down and opens up to him in return. She wants to stand by him, that what he told her doesn't matter - there are so many unknowns, that right now they should concentrate on only the positives.

The novel follows Reese and Low throughout this journey. With both characters hiding from the events in their lives that they can't see past, each pushing the other to face them head on and learn to overcome them. The main storyline is one I haven't come across in a romance book before and it was nice to have something new standing between the hero and heroine. I thought the author handled this with grace and realism. I loved how Reese and Low bonded and formed a friendship with each other, when typically all they partake in normally is casual one night relationships. This allowed me to get to know the characters more and see that Low especially is not what I expected from the start of the story. He has a huge heart, and a compassion, generosity and a level of romance I didn't expect from him.

Only the Positive captivated me with it's character development, original storylines, likeable secondary characters and a refreshing viewpoint on relationships and conquering life changing complications. I think Elle Thorpe has got off to a good start here for her debut novel and I hope she gains a following with this story, bringing something a little different to the table. I look forward to the next story in the series as the sneak peak certainly has me wanting more.

I received an ARC of Only the Positive from the author and I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed this emotional page-turning book. Thorpe beautifully paints each scene as she tackles a difficult subject matter, HIV, with honesty and sincerity.

Low and Reese are two broken souls who are drawn to each other upon first meeting. Both are dealing with issues; Low had a difficult childhood with his mother while Reese is running from her problems at home. Both also use alcohol and sex as a means to cope with their issues; never forming relationships for longer than one night. But one night of drunkenness for Low with another man has led him to a point in his life he is terrified of. The possibility of being HIV positive.

The chemistry between Low and Reese is electric and I loved reading each interaction between the two. Low and Reese are on the road to something when he discovers a past partner is HIV positive. Low struggles with his mistake and impending future by withdrawing from friends including Reese. He can't fight his connection to Reese though and finally opens up to her about his possible HIV and testing. Reese, although initially shocked at the news, stands by Low and offers him friendship, and more if he is willing, as they wait for his next test. She chooses to focus on "only the positive" as they face a life changing moment; his HIV test results.

I found it difficult to believe this was Thorpe's first book after finishing Only the Positive. I was immensely impressed with her storytelling and will be on the look out for all future Thorpe books. I am positive you must read this one when it is released!

Ok full disclosure I went into this book with stupid high expectations. It was a love of two of my biggest bookish recommenders and I trust them so much I just knew I would love it. And I was right! Guys this was everything.

We have two very broken people hiding is Sydney and trying to just survive. Their issues are each very complex and personal but still they have so much in common and share so many traits that it’s impossible for them not to gravitate toward one another.

We are faced with grief, guilt, resentment, fear, love and loss and friendships that shape these people and make their journey into healing so much better. This was such a moving and compelling story.

Oh oh and I almost forgot, Aussie Cowboys on the periphery. I didn’t know I needed that but here we are.

[I received a digital ARC for an honest review]

Only the Positive is a unique story line that I myself have never read before. It was realistic and believable. A story about learning to forgive yourself for things that are out of your control. A story about acceptance and personal growth.

When we first meet Low he is your typical carefree cocky man slut. He's Charming and flirty but his life quickly changes, and he becomes the opposite. Reese is running from her past and her guilt. She is all about carefree Low and his one-night stand motto. When she feels too much she loses herself in booze and sex. It seems like every time they start to make a physical connection he puts on the brakes. This causes them to get to know each other on a personal level and slowly become friends. Eventually she wants more and so does he but he believes his current situation won't allow them to have a future.

Low and Reeses physical connection is real and intense. Whether they are ripping each others clothes off or taking their time you can feel the chemistry through the pages. To me this story is more about their emotional connection than the physical one. They become each other's best friends, they help each other move on from their past, let go of their guilt and accept their futures.

This was my first Elle Thorpe novel and it most definitely will not be my last. I really enjoyed her writing so much and can't wait for the next book in the series.

"I'd promised myself I'd be on my best behavior. Except her long dark hair, deep brown eyes, and curves in all the right places didn't make it easy."

Finally got to finish my fellow Australian’s first book. I was seriously rooting for Elle and her characters. But I was drawn to them immediately because she introduced them so well in the first chapter. Love Reese and Low.

For two people who were struggling to deal with issues plaguing their progress to something more... I was rooting for them to get the HEA they both wanted. I enjoyed reading this debut piece because I felt a real connection between the main characters. I felt the emotions when Low realised what he’s been hit. I felt the pain of Reese’s past because it’s got to be a heavy burden to carry.

This was a great debut for Ms Thorpe. Rooting for you always my fellow Australian. Can’t wait to read Jam’s story xX

Only the Positive is the first book in the Only You stand alone series and a first Elle Thorpe. This book was an emotional one throughout and kept me hanging on where the book was going, 2 characters both broken by incidents coming together to make themselves whole again.

Low and Reece are both young and have no expectations past a one-night stands, working together will make it harder but they both know the score and use sex as a crutch which leads to Low finding out that he has been exposed to a life altering health issue. When Low and Reece start to realise that their attraction and feelings towards each other are growing they lean on each other, they can only avoid their problems for so long and when it gets tough will they cut and run or stay and believe in the positives.

Low is a young gorgeous playboy, he uses his role at the bar to help him satisfy his needs one night at a time, he hides himself from everyone, he doesn’t feel like he deserves good things to happen to him, deep down he just wants the love and support of his family and friends. Reece is independent and believes that punishing herself is the answer to her problems, believing she has ruined a life she deprives herself from what she loves Education, Horses and most of all Family.

Low and Reece had that insta attraction, they have playful flirting that heats up with just a look and a touch. Even with Low’s health situation the attraction towards each other never faulters, they find a balance and when they finally come together they explode.

Elle’s writing was great throughout this book, giving you both POV’s which is always a bonus for me, I love knowing what each character is thinking and feeling. The way she wrote Low’s health issues was fantastic, I felt that she gave his character the perfect voice and showed the range of emotions that one would feel finding out his situation.

I enjoyed the plot of the book there was a lot of dark and sad moments throughout, the fun and playfulness of the minor character shone and I cannot wait to read more about them in the following books.

I had to give this book 5 stars due to the different writing style and the different story this author takes you through. At first, I thought yes this is just another bar hopping love story with a man-whore and girl that didn't know what she wanted. But this book is sooo much more.

Reese is hiding from her past. She made a huge mistake and is running. When she gets a job at a bar and meets her new boss Low it is instant chemistry. But these two decide to be friends. I loved the banter between everyone in this story but these two are just wonderful.

Low is a man-whore and doesn't hide it. He is bi and will go with whatever is going on that night. But when he meets Reese something inside him just clicks and she is all he wants. But when he gets news that will/could change his life forever he decides that she is better off without him.

This story is NOT your usual love story. I loved that, it was so refreshing to read something new and with characters that took real-life problems and stuck with it. Reese may have run from her past life, but she was not running from her love for Low. And Low knew he would have a life of struggle and new that he needed help. And yes sometimes I did not like his choices BUT he always found his way back to Reese. That is love.

Great read!

Only the Positive takes two broken souls and heals them by bringing them together. Of course the story is just that easy. Reese is suffering from a lot of self hatred and guilt over and accident. People close to her react out of sadness and anger and make the situation even worse, so Reese runs. Low had a troubled life and doesn't feel like he belongs anywhere. Afraid the next person he lets into his life will also turn around and walk away, so he refuses to let anyone get close. When something catastrophic happens in Low's life will Reese stick around? Will Low allow his one true love to help him through one of the most difficult things he'll ever face?

Kudo's to Elle Thorpe for writing this book!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

So first it was interesting to read about a bisexual character, although that plot line basically left the building once got the news that he may have gotten HIV. I am glad the author made the hero HIV positive, because I’ve never seen that “conflict” in any other book. However, I wish we could have read more about the relationship between Reese and Low after learning Low is HIV positive and how they navigate that relationship. Condoms, obviously, but it would’ve been cool to learn things such as, what if they want to have a baby?, along with the characters.

Reese and Low meet at a time in their life when they both are in need of someone to lean on. They start off flirty and the sexual tension is palatable, but both of them are using each other as distractions. Low was used to being the cocky playboy who only was down for one night stands, but then he found himself continually pulling away whenever he and Reese would get close to developing a physical connection. His reluctance leads to them developing more of a emotional relationship instead of a physical one. What started out as a potential one night stand turns into a close friendship and then turns again into budding relationship. The physical tension that is present is electric and full of passion, but their quiet moments relying on each other emotionally is what really brings them together. Those moments become their most important moments together.

This story was quite the emotional roller coaster, but I was damn pleased to be able to experience all the twists and turns of it. At the beginning of the book they are two broken people trying to keep themselves afloat any way they can, even using sex and alcohol as a distraction to numb themselves. Elle's writing brought their heart wrenching stories to life and really pulled me into feeling everything that our main characters were feeling. The guilt. The confusion. The hurt. The shame. The emotional exhaustion. Everything was felt. It was the type of writing that makes you feel it all and revel in the vulnerability of it.

At the beginning of our story Reese and Low are dealing with so much brokenness that they are unsure if they will ever be able to piece themselves back together. They didn't want to find love. They didn't want to burden anyone with their darkness. Whether they wanted it or not, love found them. They learned that sometimes in sharing our darkness and our pain, we are able to piece ourselves back together with the love and hopeful pieces of the other person. They needed to feel in all so that they could move past it, and they needed to do it together. Not alone.

*** spoilers below, but a PSA regarding the subject matter is involved which is important ***

Hi!!!

I felt there was good tension and with the plot twists, the MC’s deserved their HEA, but legitimately felt that they got hardly any “HEA” after they resolved their issues. Ok, yes, they needed therapy… and since it was obvious the FMC never did that, I blame that on her and/or the mental health care system that may or may not be available in Australia. I don’t know the nuances based on the 6 months I lived there, so I am unsure of how it works.

I’m annoyed ESPECIALLY when the FMC had spent a full day, mid-book, writing post-it notes about ALL of the medical research she did about the MMC’s (potential at the time) diagnosis. She did ALL of this work trying to help him come to terms with the situation, perhaps with horny intent, but somehow her research went to waste? wtf?! That’s dumb for a smart woman.

Yet he floundered for weeks and she never tells him her info? And he’s too insecure or anxious to do his own research?!

Girl?!

This whole thing sounds like everyone needs a whole or of therapy and a whole lot of education. It’s odd to tell MC’s to “read a book” while I’m reading their book (very meta)… but I realize that most up to date medical journals are digital… so that’s my fault. 🤦‍♀️

******In case people are looking into relationships with high risk of HIV, please ask your primary care physician about PrEP. ❤️ HIV/AIDS isn’t a death sentence anymore. The medical advances are profoundly advancing and isn’t a matter of life or death. I’m sad the author didn’t go further into this information, but I know the U.S. Center of Disease Control will have medically backed information that will give you a clearer understanding of what to understand and to expect.

I should rate this lower but I won’t. I appreciate the awareness.

This seems to be the week for debut authors for me and what a debut Elle Thorpe has made. Only The Positive is the first in her ‘Only You’ series. It doesn’t feel like a newbie’s book. The writing is powerful, skilled and at times heart-wrenching in it’s poignancy.
Reese has moved away from home, running from a mistake she made and the devastation left in its wake. She’s drawn to the job as a bartender at Lavender Fields racecourse and it’s here she mets Low. Their attraction is instantaneous, and they have some sparky banter during her first day, but Low likes to play the field and someone else captures his eyes before they can take their interest in each other any further.
At least until the next night.
Things are going great until Low gets a phone call, and everything changes.
And these changes aren’t as simple as a crazy ex or not wanting a relationship. They are deep, and life-changing. I was pretty stunned when the author went with this topic, but she made a fantastic job of making it real. There were tears, and painful decisions for both of them while they worked through their growing desire to be together. The story was fairly slow burning as far as the sexual aspect went, but it worked for this particular topic. It allowed their love and true affection to shine through and take the reader with them. They had a small collection of friends that helped see them through the hard times and now one of those friends is about to get their own story.
And after this phenomenal start, I can’t wait to read it.

Horses have always been dear to my heart so this book was off to a great start as Reese turns up to her new job at the bar of a local racecourse.

Thoroughbreds are beautiful creatures and my heart galloped with joy as Reese shared a deep history full of love for them.

An instant reaction from her devestated family  brought her to where she is now. Alone, hurt, and isolated from the world.

Low the local one night wonder who swings whichever way the sun faces, is intent on furthering his career at the racetrack.

To achieve this he is working though all the department's of the racecourse to enrich his understanding before possibly taking over the reins.

Low and Reese are manager and employee with fireworks and sexual tension aplenty! smouldering looks and innuendos flying left right and centre.

One night, one heated moment, a text and the world crumbles as they know it.

A truly beautiful book of life, love, passion  shattered dreams and understanding.

There are subjects of a sensitive nature in this book, but the way they are written doesn't make you cringe or shy away, your heart fills with love and admiration for the characters and author.

Elle has me sat here counting down the weeks to the second book in the series releases. October isn't far away... right?!

This was a beautifully written book on healing and dealing with the unexpected that changes everything.

I thought Reese was a great character and I loved her post it notes! She was so positive for certain things, yet she also lived with so much guilt inside of her due to events in the past. The events of the past were devastating and my heart broke that she took all the blame and wouldn’t let herself be happy because of it.

Low was known for getting around and I liked the chemistry he had with Reese. I actually guessed everything ahead of time but I was sad that I was right. That being said the book was so informative and is so important for people to read. I hated how Low dealt with his own grief and how many times he would end up so drunk with cruel words coming out of his mouth.

I really liked how Reese was there for Low and was such a dedicated friend who concentrated on the positive through everything until he hits rock bottom and pushes everyone away. But before that Low was also there for Reese as well and he listened to her struggles with her own past and the two really found common ground.

I liked how whenever things mattered the most they were there for each other but they each had to deal with certain things on their own!

The ending was awesome and I loved how it all came together!

Woow! I really loved this book and characters, especially Reese and Low. It was not a typical love story and I loved it. I especially loved the moral of the story and sensitive topics that author handles with such care, character and intelligence; and setting - a horse racing track in Sydney. I really can't believe this is Elle's debut novel because it's so beautifully written with equally beautiful, loveable and engaging characters.

This was my first story by this author and I wouldn't object to reading more books from her. Such an enjoyable, emotional roller-coaster, passionate read and a page turner. The writing just flowed and had me engrossed to the story from start to finish wanting to find out what happens next. This is deep, soulful, emotional, heartfelt, angsty read with all the feels and second chances. I loved that it was written in dual POV. It was well developed, well written and thought out. It was sweet and steamy romance. The characters are amazing and so likeable. It’s easy to fall for them because they had depth, they are loveable and endearing, even though sometimes challenging. I cheered for these two to finally figure out that they are meant to be and to let themselves be loved by each other.

Both Low and Reese have a complicated past. They are also complex. I loved them from the moment they met. Loved their flirty banter, innuendos and interaction. Loved the fact that Reese could keep up with Low and call him out when he is wrong. I love that she can stand up for herself and knows what she really wants. Their love story isn't easy but it's so beautiful. I rooted for them to finally open their eyes and quit being so stubborn (especially Low) and see that they are meant to be.

Low and Reese have issues they need to overcome. I love that Reese sees the real Low and the way she wants to support him and make him believe they can be more. Low is so protective of her. I loved the dates he took her on. Their friendship is a real foundation for their relationship which I loved. I love how they started to heal each other, started to accept their future and started living.

The friendship between this group of people is amazing and I fell for them.

I really need Jam's book right now. The sneak peek at the end was great. I loved him in this book and can't wait to read his story.
Highly reommended. Read it. You won't be disappointed.
