* * *
King’s Horses picks up two months after the events of King’s Men. Snowy is slowly healing from her ordeal, but she is still struggling. Her family is still in ruin, her brothers are drinking themselves into oblivion and her past still continues to haunt her. But it isn’t just Blake Lorenz she has to worry about.
King’s Men pushed the boundaries of what I deem “dark romance.” It’s intense nature was disturbing at times, so I went into this book expecting the same intensity. I was disappointed. Part two of this sordid story is milder in comparison and while there are some upsetting scenes, it lacked the brutality of King’s Men that I enjoyed, for lack of a better word. The atmosphere wasn’t the same, and I left this book feeling underwhelmed.
However, I found myself hooked and I devoured this book, savouring every word.
While a majority is from Snowy’s point of view, there are snippets from Blake scattered throughout. These were my favourite chapters. Through Snowy’s eyes, we see Blake trying to make up for what he did. He tries to humanise himself, using his past as an excuse for the blatant abuse in inflicted upon Snowy. But he contradicts himself in his own chapters, showing us the true beast beneath the boy.
While he shows remorse to Snowy’s face, inside he still expresses interest in hurting her. He still wants to claim her, own her like she’s a prize that he’s won. He sees her as a possession instead of a woman, sometimes completely disregarding her feelings even though he tells her he wants to “start over” and “make things right.”
If he angered me in King’s Men, then he infuriated me in King’s Horses.
His constant manipulation of Snowy calls into question whether anything that comes out his mouth is genuine. He undermines her every chance he gets, using downright disgusting tactics to get what he wants from Snowy. I honestly can’t decide if he’s somehow worse in this book.
Blake is a clever man, too clever, and he knows it. He is one step ahead ahead at all times, anticipating what Snowy wants from him and twisting to his own advantage. I couldn’t believe the lengths he went to keep Snowy in hand, at his side and on his side. At one point, I considered DNF-ing this book because of his antics.
Then there’s Snowy.
Poor Snowy has been through the ringer and little does she know, she's about to go through it all again.
I hoped that the events of book one had woken her up a bit. I wished that she’d acquired some common sense when it came to Blake. Boy, I was wrong.
It was painful to watch her being constantly take advantage of, not just by Blake, but by her brothers and her so-called best friend too. I struggled to understand how she could still be so naive, considering what Blake put her through. As the book progressed, the blinders did begin to lift and she saw Blake for what he was. But all of a sudden, they slammed back down and she seemed to forget everything Blake had done to her. I hated watching her fall for Blake’s false words of remorse, and for him. Even though he has made it clear that he’s not, she even acknowledges that he’s not, she sees him as the sweet, caring boy she loved as a child.
It’s pitiful to watch her get suckered in, blinded by a mix of old love and guilt. In all honesty, I think the reason she keeps on going back to him is guilt. I think she blames herself for the monster Blake has become because of what her father made her do. Again, this is something Blake sees too, and he uses it against her.
Just like book one, he drills it into her, convincing her that it is her fault, that she should feel guilty.
But that’s what makes Blake a brilliant villain.
His cruel, callous nature is a stark contrast to the show he puts on for Snowy. The second she figures out what he really is, what his true intentions are, he turns to the broken boy persona to fix everything. And the cycle starts all over again.
While revenge was the theme of King’s Men, betrayal seems to be the theme for King’s Horses.
The ultimate betrayal, for me, came at the start of the book, by the two people Snowy cares about the most. This betrayal is the worst because it kicks off the events of the book, and puts Snowy in danger, and right back where she doesn’t want to be;
Blake Lorenz’s path.
All in all, I did really like this book. While I was underwhelmed and let down at times, the overall plot had me on the edge of my seat. I gripped from page one and I couldn’t stop until I finished.
If you’re in the market for a duet full of revenge, betrayal, secrets and many, many secrets, then Savage Falls is the duet for you.
4 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars When Light and Love Spring from the Darkness
Verified PurchaseFor readers who love the dark side of romance. Every time I think this author has reached the pinnacle of dark deliciousness, she sets the standard even higher. This book will grab you by the throat from the start and keep you on edge till the very end. Lark masterfully takes unabashedly dominating men of dubious character and makes you crave for more, including peripheral characters that will tweak your imagination as well. Great read that you will devour in one sitting simply because you won’t be able to put it down. This story twisted me and captivated me at the same time.
