Test (Gentry Generations Book 3) Kindle Edition
And I thought I knew his story.
I was wrong.”
PAIGE
People say Derek Gentry is a wild player who is good for only one thing.
Even from a distance he's like a neon sign that reads: 'I AM THE WORST IDEA YOU EVER HAD.'
And I'm not tempted, no matter how hot he is.
I've heard the rumors. I know his story.
But I've got my own scars. I don't need his, no matter how troubled his background might be.
Despite his muscled, blue-eyed good looks, he's definitely just heartbreak wrapped in a seductive package.
However, I didn't plan on falling into his arms on the worst night of my life.
I didn't plan on initiating a chain reaction of events that neither of us saw coming.
And I didn't plan on needing him so much I can hardly stand it.
I thought I knew who Derek was.
But it turned out I didn't know anything at all.
DEREK
Everyone has a history.
Mine's a little worse than most.
I've hurt my family. I've hurt people I never even knew. I've hurt myself.
And I've been hiding at the bottom of a bottle for so long I'm not sure how to do things differently.
At first Paige didn't seem like the type who would ever be able to handle a guy like me.
Little did I know what kind of mysteries she's been keeping inside.
Now I can't get her out of my head.
We could help each other.
Or we could destroy each other.
Right now it's anyone's guess.

- Reviewed in Australia on 3 October 2018Verified PurchaseCora, you have done it again. I have loved the Gentrys from the first book Draw, and they just keep getting better and better!
Following a few years after Keep, we get to know Derek Gentry and his struggle with alcoholism, and his ever present guilt for his stupid drunken decision to drive a car home after his cousins wedding which resulted in the death of his cousins brother-in-law. Derek is trying so hard to beat his demons and stay sober but there is always that struggle, which leads him to the closest convenience store to buy some liquor.
At the same store is Paige, shy, awkward and battling her own demons stemmed from abandonment issues by her mother. A drug addict high on his latest fix attacks Paige alongside the store clerk when Derek steps in and saves them. After the attacks, Derek and his brother Kellan visit Paige to check how she is. What starts out as an innocent friendship turns into so much more.
I loved how Cora took us on both of Derek & Paige’s separate struggling journeys. I felt each of their pain, guilt, shame and angst. It was also great to catch up with the rest of the Gentry clan with hints of future stories.
- Reviewed in Australia on 5 October 2018This is a great edition to the series. I have followed this series since the beginning and the author doesn’t shy away from tough subjects. This was a moving story that has a HEA.
- Reviewed in Australia on 27 September 2018Paige works at the Pizza shop while she was trying to work things out, her two friends Sam and Ric wanted her to go out and have fun, and at a party she sees two of the Gentry brothers, but remembers Derek who had an accident drink driving that killed someone
Paige had heard about Derek Gentry and what he did, he’s reputation, but when she went to the store and there was a junkie that started to attack people, even though she didn’t like being touched she felt safe in his arms.
Derek wasn’t anything like she’d heard, he made her feel safe, he made her feel. When see hears he’s a recovering alcoholic and feels like a drink and doesn’t have one, she knows he has battles like she does. Seeing Derek fight his battle to have a drink, Paige realises that it’s time to battle her own demons.
Derek knows there’s something special about Paige, she’s not another score for him, he wants to try harder battling his addiction to be a better man for her. Although Paige hasn’t told him, he knows she has her own demons she’s battling.
They both are what each other wants, but they are both battling demons from their past, can they help each other get past the demons to heal each other together to find their redemption.
- Reviewed in Australia on 27 September 2018I was ready for Derek’s story to break me a little, hell, I was even a little eager for it. And I was not disappointed. I absolutely loved the story, the way that everything isn’t cookie cutter perfect. It’s a story about making mistakes, more than once and still having the strength to pick yourself up and start again, about learning to lean on others but to also be strong and have faith in yourself.
I can’t wait for more stories in this series, especially Kellan’s, he is a total crack up!
- Reviewed in Australia on 7 October 2018Cora Brent writes amazing novels that touch on some tough themes at times but always finds a way to show you the journey is manageable with the love and support of the right partner and an inspirational family like the Gentrys. I was always so sad for Derek after what one decision led to with Hale. I am glad he found the strength in himself and a wonderful love in Paige. As always the Gentrys are a bundle of fun, laughs, support and love.
- Reviewed in Australia on 26 September 2018I love all the Gentry books and Test does not disappoint. I loved Derek and Paige’s story, could not put it down.
Derek and Paige both have some demons to overcome but they give each other something to fight them for, someone to be there for and that is beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book in the Whole Series
Verified PurchaseThis is the third book in the Gentry Generations series. It can be read as a standalone but would make more sense if read in order.
This book deals with some heavy themes, if you are easily triggered by addictions or addictive behaviors, be forewarned.
This book is by far the heaviest and most emotionally charged book written by Ms. Brent. It was, at times, difficult to read. The characters seemed so raw and so vulnerable that it felt intrusive to be reading about them. Ms. Brent did a fantastic job portraying the addictions in these two characters. It was an honest and brutal look into how addictions can fester, not only in the person suffering, but also the people surrounding them. It was intimate and intense, as well as being so beautifully flawed.
Derek has not had an easy life. Plagued by tragedy and unacceptable life choices, he still can’t seem to find his footing. Paige is an emotional character, driven by her compulsions. Her life, too, has been marred with tragedy. Together these two navigate the waters of addiction and deeply tragic personal histories. We see their relationship flourish over time, into this beautiful and hopeful thing, only to be ripped apart by one fateful decision. I think the beauty in this story is in its intricate flaws. Those moments when two people come together and try to work past their transgressions.
Test, is truly just that, a test of their willpower and relationship. This story is so exquisitely written. This is a story of hope and second chances. I have been along for the ride since Ms. Brent wrote the very first Gentry Brothers story and
I have been captivated by each and every story she has told. This story is by far, my favorite. I hope that reading this story will give other readers an inside look into addictions. I hope that they take away the heartbreakingly gorgeous story of hope these two characters bring to life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you for The Gentry’s... beautiful story 5+*
Verified PurchaseI absolutely loved Derek and Paige’s story, there was something really honest and pure about it even though the storyline touched on sensitive topics it flowed with comfortable ease all the way through... well except the slight slip up Derek suffered on Paige’s twenty first birthday, of all the times for it to happen it had to be then...you knew it was coming because things had been going a little too smoothly, it certainly wasn’t intentional it just happened.
Initially it’s a terrible time for all concerned and it doesn’t do Derek’s reputation much good he has some repairing to do that’s for sure and it becomes quite emotional as the Gentry Brothers hash things out.
You have to wonder where Derek and Paige go from here especially as Paige needs to come clean to Derek about her problems even though Derek knows it needs to come from her.
Thankfully with a little time to reflect and deal with certain issues at hand plus the fact that nobody understands more than Paige it isn’t long before they are back in each other’s company... where they are meant to be.!!
Beautifuly written and as I finished the last page with a big smile and turned to read Cora Brent’s notes, it all made sense.
Some of the topics throughout this storyline obviously rang true and are very personal to this brilliant author and it shows because it came across very real.
I feel there is so much more to come, isn’t someone going back to Emblem to teach.!!! That is going to be interesting for many reasons.
I can’t wait.!
Thank you.!

4.0 out of 5 stars Test Review
Verified PurchaseI am a big fan of the Gentry's and always glad when another book arrives from this family. Overall, I enjoyed Test. As I have come to find, these books can at times be really heavy as Cora does not shy away from heavy or emotional topics and Test, centres around addictions in a number of forms. While, this book really does pack a punch, without trivialising anything, I wished there had been more light and shade as I felt that the story just needed a little more light relief at times. All in all, though I loved catching up with the Gentry's and look forward to the next book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love the Gentry's!
Verified PurchaseDerek Gentry has an alcohol addiction and is fighting to stay sober on a daily basis and Paige Morrissey has an eating disorder, which she doesn’t really acknowledge.
I loved these two characters, really the whole Gentry clan to be honest.
With that being said Derek and Paige both have an uphill battle, individually and separately. I am not sure that Derek was totally committed to staying sober, he has a whole family trying to help him along with a sponsor and group support, but wanting the help needs to come from him first…and I just didn’t feel that he wanted it bad enough. Paige is really needing to acknowledge the fact that, she too, is needing help and support, but totally down plays her eating disorder and can do it on her own.
I loved that while they are both struggling with their own issues, they managed to find one another. Can they both be what each other needs? Can their love survive despite their issues? Their issues will put them both to the test!

5.0 out of 5 stars To Love A Gentry
Verified PurchaseI love Derek and Paige, and their story is so realistic and inspiring. Their two young adults who are trying to find their way. The actions of another addict will begin their journey to love, healing, & health. The scare of an addict yielding a knife and stabbing both Derek and a convenience store owner brought Paige into Derek's arms. Their attraction for each brought her into his heart. And while Paige knew of Derek, she had no idea that what people said about him wasn't all of who he was, and it didn't define who he was trying to become. Derek was an alcoholic who's drunk driving and killed another drunk driver. Who happened to be his cousin's brother in law. Paige is suffering from bulimia due to a history of issues. She sought therapy in high school. But because her reasons in her mind are now different, it's not as much as before. So she thinks she has it under control. But as these two begin to fall in love and they blend into each other's family circle, they will see and discover that their struggles are not being addressed and that love from each and their families are what will help them to make the changes necessary to get and keep themselves healthy. And to make their future together work.
