The Grumpy Player Next Door (Copper Valley Fireballs Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 8,119 ratings

I, Tillie Jean Rock, am not in love with my brother’s teammate. Sure, he might have those biceps and that “I am the grouchiest of grouchy bears” smolder, and he might shovel snow off his driveway next door wearing nothing but boxer shorts and rubber boots, and he might be running a side business feeding all the stray goats in town, but studliness is only skin-deep.

And I might flirt with him every chance I get, but I swear it’s only to annoy my brother.

And him.

Because Max Cole?

Under all of those glorious muscles and chiseled cheekbones and searing glares beats the heart of a heartless devil.
I could no sooner fall in love with a guy who treats me like a kid, and judges me at every opportunity, and sets an army of garden gnomes loose on my yard, than I could fall in love with my grandfather’s pet parrot.

But I can definitely annoy him. I can one hundred percent get on board with annoying him.

That’s what you do when you don’t like your neighbor, right?

But you know what they say about love and hate…

It’s a very thin line.

Especially when the
real reason I’m not in love with Max Cole—that he’s incapable of love—might not be true at all.

The Grumpy Player Next door is a fun-filled enemies-to-lovers romcom featuring a ray of sunshine on a mission, an athlete who’s only grouchy around her, and an epic prank gone wrong. It stands alone and comes complete with small-town shenanigans, a goat who’s not nearly as wise as his name suggests, and proof that sometimes, love is the best kind of vengeance.

Pippa Grant wanted to write books, so she did.

Before she became a USA Today and #1 Amazon bestselling romantic comedy author, she was a young military spouse who got into writing as self-therapy. That happened around the time she discovered reading romance novels, and the two eventually merged into a career. Today, she has more than 30 knee-slapping Pippa Grant titles and nine published under the name Jamie Farrell.

When she’s not writing romantic comedies, she’s fumbling through being a mom, wife, and mountain woman, and sometimes tries to find hobbies. Her crowning achievement? Having impeccable timing for telling stories that will make people snort beverages out of their noses. Consider yourself warned.

It’s another Fireballs book and this time it’s Max Coles turn. He’s a pitcher (no idea what that means, baseball is weird) and he’s been relentlessly flirted with by Tillie Jean Rock for the past five years. Now make no mistake, while this is Max and TJ’s story, her older brother Cooper is the third main character, as he has made it very clear TJ is off limits to his teammates.
Poor Max however is desperately trying not to be attracted to Tillie Jean cause he doesn’t want to lose his friendship with Cooper, and Tillie Jean just loves pranking her brother and flirting with Max is an easy way to do it.
It all comes to a head when TJ accidentally pranks Max instead of her brother and he moves in next door.
Now, I really struggled to like Tillie Jean for most of this book. There’s the idea that Max is grumpy and in reality he has serious mental health issues. Honestly it took me so long to warm to her and even then I still don’t really know how I feel about her. I felt for Max, he has such serious issues and is desperate to hold onto the connections that he does have, his teammates and specifically his friendship with Cooper, that he was really torn over Tillie. It’s for sure a slow burn kind of deal but it didn’t have the payoff something in this trope normally would.

In the end this book just wasn’t for me which makes me really sad cause I love Pippa Grants books, but this just wasn’t it.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC copy of this book.

Pirate obsessed town, growly hero, prank wars. Over protective brother, obnoxious parrot, loud unapologetically open small town who call it like they see it. I adore shipwreck and am so excited to revisit the quirky town. I had to stop reading because I was laughing too much to focus several times. Pippa has a knack for creating unique towns and characters and putting them through hilarious scenes. If you want to be cheered up when you don't think you are capable of smiling. Pick up Max and Tillie Jean. The character arcs were brilliantly executed. Heat, heart and laughter.

Another laugh out loud swoony home run from Pippa! Max and Tillie Jean are goals. I love that they are just so themselves with each other. As someone who has suffered with anxiety before I liked that Max had his own struggle but was able to work through it. Tillie Jean is just so good. She’s also freakin hilarious. Her and Coopers prank wars are so awesome and her addiction to coffee is relatable. Growly Bear and Trouble Jean is one of my new favourites and you need to go read it!

There's a particular element that makes a good rom-com sparkle, and I didn’t realize I had been missing it. Glitter! Glitter makes everything sparkly. For. Ev. Er. And what's a Graņt book without glitter?

It can’t be easy being basebąll superstar Cooper Rock's sister. But Tillie Jean gives as good as she gets while still being the kind of girl we all want to be BFFs with. Or at least exist somewhere in her orbit so we can bask in her warmth and joie de vivre. She may be a master prankster, but she loves wholly and completely and gives her love freely to everyone in her life. Although this nuisance attraction to her brother's teammate and best friend, Max Cole, seems to make her a bit irritable at times.

I couldn’t help but feel a little sorry for Max while wanting to simultaneously shake him. Then I wanted to wrap my arms around him. Then shaķe him. And maybe knock him upside the head. The poor guy wants to fit in so badly, but he can’t seem to figure out that there’s only one thing he needs to do for that to happen. Choose it.

His teammates are there. The Rock family is there. The entire freaking pirate town of Shipwreck is there, all with their arms open wide. But Max has to summon some courage, stop hiding behind his protective wall, and walk towards the love and acceptance he's needed and wanted his entire life. He may think he has a million reasons to hate Tillie Jean, but possibly he has his own nuisance attraction he's dealing with.

A Pıppa book is always great fun, with things like cursing parrots, prank upmanship and goatus interruptus. But the heart and emotion in this one? I felt it to my soul. The pranks and shenanigans and the quirky, colorful characters breathe life into the story, but TJ and Max are the air I need to breathe. Every step of their road to forever is so real and vivid that these two will always own permanent real estate in my heart.

How any wrıter canwhiįp me from laughter to tears to anxiety to unbridled happiness from one page to the next, I’ll never understand. But that is the magic this crafty penner of prose weaves into her stories, and reading them is an unparalleled, exhilarating, bewitching experience. Do yourself a favor and be sure not to miss this one. It deserves all the glittering stars, and your romantic heart will be eternally grateful.

I love how Pippa Grant tackles big issues with such compassion, depth and humour.
Talking about mental health in macho sportsmen shouldn’t bring the tears- but oh my gods reading about Max and how love saves him has me sniffling and reaching for the Kleenex. I love all these characters and the things they overcome. And I love Pippa Grant’s writing and humour and heart!

I honestly can’t remember the last time I laughed so much reading a book! If you’ve read it then you know Long Beak Silver is a comedy genius, seriously GENIUS. I fell in love with both of the lead characters, I thought at the very beginning I may fine TJ slightly annoying but she has a heart of pure gold, and the hero Max is everything we love: sexy, grumpy, damaged, funny, sporty and down right swoon worthy. One of my top book boyfriends for sure. I defy anyone to not want to move to the charming town of Shipwreck IMMEDIATELY after reading this 10/10 of a story. The supporting characters and the culture of a small town absolutely make this book.
This was my first read by this author but I’m definitely looking up her other books, Pippa Grant has potential to become one of my favourites if her other books are as fabulous as this one.

Pappa Grant writes a beautiful love story, of trust, and family love. I’m not sure if I’ve read any other books by this author, but I truly loved this book.
Max is the star pitcher for the Fireballs team, he is handsome, single, and sadly has had a sad upbringing, with an alcoholic father. His self esteem is low, he feels like he doesn’t deserve love, and has frequent anxiety attacks. He is best friends with Cooper, another member of the team, and he treasures that friendship.
Tillie Jean is Cooper’s sister, and she has had a bad previous relationship. The whole town loves her, because she is outgoing, and helpful. She has been flirting with Max for four years, while he keeps being a growly bear.
There is an attraction between them, but Max keeps fighting, because he feels unworthy of love.
The constant pranking between Tillie Jean and her brother, is an ongoing town joke. They are constantly trying to one-up each other, and this ends up getting Max involved. Max and Tillie Jean slowly begin to show their true feelings towards each other, and a hidden relationship begins. A doomed relationship, because of all the insecurities, that Max has. They split from each other after a massive glitter bomb explosion in Tillie Jean’s bedroom.
While at spring training, Max realizes that he cant live without Tillie Jean, and comes home to apologize, and the couple admit their true feelings and finally obtain their HEA.
This book was well written, entertaining, and delves into some emotional facts, but the constant pranking adds a lightness to the story.
