There are three things to know about Tilly Mahoney:

1. She's a liar.

2. She thinks she's in love with her best friend.

3. She's got a plan to ruin his wedding.

Tilly and her best friend have been through it all. For decades, he has been her support system, and she's been his right hand gal, and now he's engaged to someone else? Not on her watch.

"Hey, want to help me break up a wedding?" is a dubious start to an unlikely friendship, but the bride's ex-boyfriend, Zack, is the perfect partner in crime for Tilly's misguided plan to spoil the nuptials. The bearded and brooding man is clearly desperate to win back the love of his life, and she's all too willing to help if it'll break up the happy couple.

But the more she tries to interfere with the wedding and the closer she gets to Zack, the more confusing Tilly's feelings become. About a decades-long friendship, about what she thought was love, and most terrifyingly, about the way Zack saves all of his smiles for her.

Sad but oh so sweet, it’s best friends to lovers gone awry. Loved this premise and how Zack was all in and showed Tilly what love was all about, despite her reluctance to give up on her idea of her best friend Tyler not being the man for her. All the feels for Tilly finding her place in the world and the right man with it.

Tilly is in love with her best friend Tyler. When she finds out that he is getting married, she gets this crazy idea to break up the couple.

    What possible go wrong?

A lovely book that does just what the author wanted. It was fun to watch Tilly's machinations to keep Tyler from getting married. It was easy to recognize who she'd finally love however.

A few times she used the wrong word, like sunk for sank or the wrong pronoun. Using God, Jesus and Christ as profanity was unnecessary.

Following Tilly's journey to discover what she really wanted in life and setting out to achieve that made for good reading.

Tilly and Tyler have been best friends for decades. Every important moment in their lives featured the other person. No one would have been surprised if they'd one day get married...

...except for Tyler. He breaks Tilly's heart when he gets engaged to another woman, so Tilly does what any sane woman would do: she plots to ruin her best friend's wedding.

Tilly enlists the bride-to-be's ex-boyfriend, Zack, in her evil plan. If she can get Zack and Sarah back together, Tyler will come crawling back to her.

Unless, of course, Tilly realizes how amazing Zack is and how maybe Tyler isn't as perfect for her as she thought.

How to Ruin a Wedding takes the promising premise of My Best Friend's Wedding and gives is more depth and a happy ending. I'm so glad Sophie didn't make Tilly a total lunatic. Instead, she's smart, caring, and scared. She'd been dealt several crap hands and just wants to hold onto a bit of normalcy.

The way Zack is written makes you instantly love him. He's witty, kind, and doesn't let Tilly get away with much. She needed someone to ground her, and Zack was just the man for the job. The way he reassures Tilly and practically begs her to let him take care of her will make you swoon for days even after you've finished the book!

I loved that Zack wasn't the stereotypical hero, too. He's a ginger for one (I have one of those at home!), he's build and sturdy due to manual labor, and he and the heroine argue over who's taller. She even tells him they can't date because of it. It cracked me up! And through it all, he remained the voice of reason. He was there to catch Tilly when she fell making him the perfect book boyfriend in my eyes.

    Favorite quote:

“Is there a word for when everything inside me feels like it’s trying to get to you, and it’s so painful the only thing that helps is for you to touch me. Then, at least, all my blood and muscles and bones don’t feel so out of place inside me. Is there a word for that?”

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing in every way
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 31, 2024
To begin, I disliked the explicit sex. Years ago, when I was in an English class, I elected to read the first pornographic novel ever written in English. The story was good, kind of like Moll Flanders, but the book was interlaced with porn. That book was nothing on this one. I ended up doing what I did with the first pornographic novel, I skipped the explicit sexual parts. This book may not be pornographic by today’s standards, but ugh. Not to my taste. Otherwise, I knew exactly how it would end. No surprises whatsoever. If this floats your boat, go with it. I think the author had to add the sex to sell the book, and she did it with gusto. Ugh again. I must be getting old . . .
