Julius (Darker Places Book 5) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 39 ratings

They say success is the best revenge.

I say it isn’t enough.

I’ve spent the last twenty years building my empire, but I’ll never forget the gutters I had to crawl through to get here. Or the enemy who made it that way. It isn’t enough to build my own empire if I can’t crush his.

Luckily, I’ve found his weak spot. The perfect lure in the form of a brown-eyed devil with chestnut hair and a deviant smile. The princess he never should’ve let leave the castle.

They say revenge makes people bitter.

I’ve never tasted anything so sweet.

Julius is a complete story with a guaranteed HEA and NO cliffhanger. This book is a dark romance, and thus contains dark subject matter. Reader discretion is advised.

Just when I think that the last book couldn't get any better, here I am blown away again!!! I was very happy with the man Julius became. Even the man he was before Laney was a good guy, but love changes him for the better!!! Thank you Nicole!

Just when I think that the last book couldn't get any better, here I am blown away again!!! I was very happy with the man Julius became. He was a decent guy before Laney, but love changes him for the better!!!
I loved the storyline, and ended up reading in one sitting.

“He’s the monster in my dreams, but he isn’t hiding under the bed. He’s turning on the light and showing me all the other creatures in my room. Dark and disgusting.”

    REVIEW OF STORY:
Julius has been planning his revenge for years. When he finally hires a man to kidnap the daughter of his victim, he’s given the wrong woman, causing Julius to completely revamp his plans. Not only is Julius forced to reconstruct his lifelong revenge plans, but of course, feelings develop between him and his captor, Laney.

Laney herself is an innovative character. Having grown up on the property of a women’s shelter in Italy, Julius exposes her to a life she doesn’t remember living. He also brings her sexual fantasies to life.

JULIUS is so so so much more than your typical abduction story!!!! Years of deception and corruption result in abuse and neglect for Julius and feelings of betrayal for Laney. When they join forces, nothing goes as predicted + their romance is off the charts hot!!! This is one of the most innovative books I’ve read in a long time! I was glued to the pages, often surprised and consistently entertained!!!

The only negative about this book is that there were gaps in the storyline, and it contained a lot of errors. For details on those issues, continue reading below! Otherwise, this is where my review ends!!!

    REVIEW OF PROOFREADING:
To start with, there were typos such as always using the word MIGHT when it should’ve been MAY, ONTO instead of ON TO, ABANDON when it should’ve been ABANDONED, INTO although it should’ve been IN TO, INFLAMES for FLAMES, ON instead of IN, IN instead of ON, WENT when it should’ve been GONE, and FURTHER when it should have been FARTHER.

Brand names weren’t always capitalized, and according to the CMOS, ellipses we’re not documented correctly. When in the middle of a sentence, ellipses should have spaces on BOTH sides. However, in this book, ellipses were followed by a space on the right side only (for example, “that… not”).

The most common mistakes were regarding COMMAS:
-The FANBOYS rule was followed quite often, but not all of the time.
-Commas were not always placed before pronouns (for example, “You aren’t a good actress Laney”).
-Introductory words and phrases were not always followed by commas.
-Rules for commas and the word OH we’re not followed (for example, “Oh my God” should have been, “Oh, my God”).
-OF COURSE was not always surrounded by commas when in the middle of a sentence.
-TOO was occasionally surrounded by commas when it was in the middle of the sentence and could be replaced by the word.
-TOO was occasionally preceded by a comma when it was The last word in a sentence, yet sometimes it was not. Either way is correct as long as it is consistent throughout the manuscript.
-THOUGH was occasionally surrounded by commas when it was in the middle of the sentence and could be replaced by the word.
-THOUGH was occasionally preceded by a comma when it was The last word in a sentence, yet sometimes it was not. Either way is correct as long as it is consistent throughout the manuscript.
-When EITHER was the last word in a sentence, it was occasionally preceded by a comma, sometimes not. Either way is correct as long as you’re consistent throughout the manuscript which was not the case here.

    REVIEW OF EDITING:
Unfortunately, there were quite a few inconsistencies and gaps in the storyline. For example, we are specifically told, “...there isn’t a mirror in the room”, yet literally five paragraphs later it says, “I bring the mirror down from my face and look at him.” Also, one of the characters is cut, then less than 10 minutes later we are told that he has, “fresh stitches” even though the character never got any stitches. Same with when they go to the kitchen to eat beans yet make pancakes...

***Fortunately, all of these are things most readers won’t even notice, are super easy to fix (I’d love to work with you, Nicole😉) and didn’t diminish how how much I enjoy this fabulous story!!!!

This book I couldn't stop reading til I finished. I totally was in love with this love story. I liked how there was some of the characters from the previous books in this series were brought in but it wasn't too much. Now I hope there can be a story for Emma.

Julius can’t see anything other than his revenge and the path to his revenge. His mind is set on how to get pay back for the tragedy that he lived through as a child. Unfortunately, it will include a woman he has never met, but knows will get the pay back he wants.

Laney has lived a sheltered life and at the age of 19 she is ready to get away from her family and live her life on her own terms. Little does she know that her whole life has been a lie. She will learn the dangers that lurk in the world when she tries to protect her cousin from a kidnapper only to become his victim.

This was a good story, it took me a bit to get into it at the beginning for some reason, but once I got into it, I enjoyed it. The secrets that Laney discovers about her family and her true life could ruin her innocence, and captive is determined to do that as well as make her see the truth about her family. If you enjoy suspense, mafia, revenge, or bully stories, you will enjoy Julius. I give the story a 3.5-star review.
