ABIGAIL
LA wasn’t home… just home for now.
Transplanted here to model I learned Hollywood isn’t where dreams survive the harsh reality of millions all sharing that same dream.
Executive assistant is who I am now.
Slave.
Hollywood’s darling took a liking to me. One not easily ignored when they give you a taste of the high life.
I was supposed to give up hope and give in to LA’s bad reputation but I had rules.
Well, just one: read the rules before you break them.
Unwilling to abandon all my morals, the filter came off my life to see the world I was one foot in was invitation only...

GRIMM
I’m not sure I was ever really Jason.
Whoever he was, was a distant memory now.
Grimm is who I am now.
Death.
I abandoned my birth name, companionship, happiness that wasn’t shaped like Xanax all because I was expected to be the kind of elite that pulls the strings.
Pull the strings but follow the rules.
No distractions.
No serious relationships.
Keep what we do secret.
Born into a rite I didn’t ask for, a society of puppeteers.

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Elena Monroe grew up in Florida scribbling down stories from a very young age. These stories were really just wavy lines filling the paper, but she knew each word, each emotion, each character's name, and there was no tricking her into forgetting what each line signified. Just like her unconventional way of writing as a toddler Elena is setting her own rules and just telling stories.

Much like her debut novel, The Best Years, life certainly imitated art. Transplanting from the South to the East Coast, Elena currently lives in Connecticut with her new husband, reformed bad boy.

This book was fantastic, dark and mysterious and I loved it. The grit, the suspense and the horsemen.
Abigail is an awesome main character, with a great back story.
This book is so well written, the fine detail is really amazing. Looking forward to reading more

Woah this book was intense !!
Definitely a dark read! With and element of forbidden love.
I’ve read all of Elana’s previous books and have enjoyed all of them ! She is so creative and different to what I normally read and she hooks me in every time !
This first book of the 4 horsemen is the introduction to the clave (a messed up crazy cult led by β€œZeus” himself ) , and our four leading men !

Grimm is messed up ! To put it lightly . And really a closet softy , though he’s had to squash that to fulfil his cult role - His role is death and he’s a real rule breaker. And he’s good at it.
Grimm is someone to be feared . And everyone does . Everyone But Abigail.

Abigail is a sassy control freak working as an assistant at the clave and she gets handed off to Grimm who instantly wants to protect her from certain death , though at first he’s not sure why .
Abigail isn’t afraid to say what she thinks and stands up to Grimm time and time again .

I loved that there was hints to link this series to the celestial bodies series and I hope that plays out more in the story line to come !

There is no cliffy at the end of this book ! Lots of questions and intrigue as to what will happen next but I was not left unsatisfied in terms of where Grimm and Abi stood to each other so tick to that !

I’m really looking forward to reading more of this series !!

Is it really surprising I loved this? Well no.
    .
I didn’t want this book to end. I have loved this! The world is really unique. I love Elenas twists on classic tropes but also what we all know when it comes to myths, legends and fantasy. She definitely takes you on a trip of a lifetime. Be prepared for an emotional roller coaster.
    .
Grimm, even though is your brooding rich bad boy, has been twisted and feels more tangible and relatable than others I have read. He’s definitely fascinating. I just want to dive deeper into his character and explore everything about him. Yes he’s a psychopath and at times he did shock me but it just made me want to peel back layers of him to learn more. Abigail, again another relatable character but for me I enjoyed her resilience and determination. Both have their demons and it’s incredible watching as they both navigate them.
    .
The contrast between the two characters is great to see. I did want the pace to pick up faster in the beginning. I started feeling like it started dragging and i often felt like I was coming to a standstill when it came to reading it. But the fascination with Grimm kept me going and I’m glad it did!
    .
I hope the pace picks up more as the series goes but otherwise I’m loving this. So much layers and interesting use of symbolism in the book. It’s kept my interest and I’m looking forward to how it unravels in the coming books.

Loved the blurb and the premise of the story. I found it disjointed however. Very conflicted on this one. It’s more of an introduction to the characters and not very much progressed until half way.

The writing style is one I’ve enjoyed previously, the characters reactions don’t quite fit the situations, so rather than feeling intrigued, I was irritated by them quite often and couldn’t connect. It was as almost a dnf until 60%

It’s a theme that’s been done before, so I’d hoped for something to really wow me. I think it was the hyped expectation, waiting to binge the books, that this would have more punch than it did for me. Lots of telling, not showing, and errors needing correction.

    Dark themes 3/5 Stars 3/5

The initiation is my first book by Elena and I must say I was blown away.

Grimm was such an interesting in complex character, however he was written so well that you immediately feel for him. Elena’s writing is so captivating and interesting that I’m now dying for the rest of this series.

The whole cult/clave concept was something quite new to me and I found it so interesting. It was dark and gritty which managed to pull me in within the first 3 chapters which is normally quite hard for me.

Abby was a strong heroine who never took crap from any of the horsemen. She was independent which made me admire her as a female lead.

Abby and Grimm were an excellent example of enemies to lovers but I loved every second of their banter and frustration of feelings. The way Grimm cares for Abigail made me swoon, even though he was a bit of an arrogant a** at times.

This will definitely not be my last book by Elena because she is an AMAZING writer. I’m also so grateful to have received an arc.

A fantastic opener to the series. We will learn more about the Clave as we delve deeper into the next books and I can't wait! Abigail and Grimm were perfect for each other, both suffering from past trauma, darkness, control issues, 2 little monsters entwined to perfection.

This book follows the developing relationship between Grimm (death) and Abigail as the form try’s to figure out why he’s acting this way. I was hook from the first page and the blurb pulled me right in before I received the book itself. I will definitely be recommending thins one to people

At first glance I thought this book was going to be dark cult story, while it wasn’t as dark as I aspected it was so much more.

This story had so many layers that had completely captured my heart. Elena has this ability to write her characters with so many layers that it’s like uncovering something new with each page.

Oh and the angst! If you read anything by Elena you know the angst be real, and of course she didn’t disappoint.

This is my first Elena Monroe book. She thought up an extremely unique plot for this story. I loved the idea of it. The initiation was a story that was mind numbingly twisted with so many turns and unpredictable moments that will have you saying WOW!
This book is based in Los Angeles and centers around a cult with an Illuminati feel. It has 4 horsemen, chaos, war, famine, and death. Each of the founding families has a son they have in their business doing their dirty work for them. This book (book 1 of 4) is based on Jason Rothschild. Jason or as he is known as Grimm is a monster. He is a trained killer. Having such a dark past Grimm does not let many in besides his three brothers. The complexity of Grimms character throughout the book is extraordinary. He is such an in-depth character and you learn so much about his personality and why he does things the way he does and functions certain ways. The growth and rawness you experience with him is some of my favorite for any character.
Abi is a LA transplant coming from Chicago with her own dark past. She works at Clave where the four horsemen run the business. She is abruptly removed from Victory’s desk as his assistant and moved to Grimms. The way these two start is almost like water and oil. Their love story is as warped as they are. But it has some incredibly adorable moments. They have to go through so many hurdles and hoops. This stirs up their past and peels layers upon layers of doubt, grief, and horrors to the surface. Bringing them closer causes risks especially when the family does not want impure blood in their cult. Do they have to accept their ultimate fate of always being alone due to the skeletons in their closet or can they find a way to make their love work? This was one heck of a rollercoaster.

I went into this one blind. Not really knowing what to expect. Then got totally lost in this new world this author created. I was hooked from beginning to end.

Can’t wait to find out more about these characters.
