Nightshade: A Dark Paranormal Gothic Romance (Nightshade Duology Book 1) Kindle Edition
My father called them messengers.
He once told me they walked among us, and that somewhere in this dark and godless city, there shined a faint sliver of hope. I had only to look for the signs.
Well, I’ve spent my whole life investigating the inexplicable, and all I've found are the unsettling vestiges of iniquity - the evidence of another world shrouded by the obscure. Purgatory to some, where depravity hides in shadows, and girls like me are little more than delicious bites of temptation.
Others call it Nightshade.
This peculiar place is where I first met the cold and callous recluse living in a decaying cliffside cathedral. Jericho Van Croix is the epitome of everything I’ve been told to fear. A raven-winged harbinger who wears intrigue like a warm black cloak. An enigma that I’m determined to unravel – even if it means getting closer than I should.
One touch is forbidden. Even so much as a kiss would be my demise. But the sin on his lips burns me up like a wild flame, and his growing infatuation weakens my resolve.
Giving him what he wants, though, will mean no chance for redemption, or escape. What's worse is, the signs I’ve followed yet failed to see all these years begin to unmask a terrifying reality:
That falling may be my only saving grace.

What an incredible mind Keri Lake has. I absolutely LOVE this book. Dark, haunting, romantic, sexy mysterious. Keri’s writing and storytelling is immaculate.
The pacing in this is Perfect. Good pacing is something that I really appreciate in a book and when there is a lot of world building that needs to be done and many facets to a story, I think some books can easily leave you feeling confused or things can drag and you’re just waiting for something to happen but with Nightshade every page from start to finish had me engaged.
Loved the characters, the plot is fantastic and how everything unfolded was just brilliant. I was hooked from the beginning and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.

Jericho 🥰🔥 How he loves her. How possessive he is. She is his and that’s the end of it, it’s not even up for discussion and I lived for it. He’s a man worth risking it all for.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 October 2023A strange story of past lives. This tells a story of a past life but Nighshade also reads like it is set in the Victorian era. She is trying to find her father who she believes is in Nighshade. He wants her to find a man who can help her. It's all a bit mysterious and strange.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 October 2021I was pulled in right from the very start. The story is dark and sexy, spanning hundreds of years. It brings its own mythology to angels, demons, man and the afterlife.
Farryn and Jericho have a love that defies death and even the beyond. It's hot, it's forbidden and it's unbreakable.
I loved the timeline back and forth, something I don't normally enjoy but it worked really well here in setting the scene.
I'm really looking forward to book 2 I'm interested to see where the author takes the story next. This book can be read as a stand alone, but if you fall in love with the characters the way I have you will definitely want more. I would like to have seen more banter with some secondary characters, but overall I loved the focus on the love story.
I am living for all the Baron and Lustina scenes. They had most of my favourite moments.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 February 2025Wow, an unbelievably beautiful book. This is one of the few books I’ve given 5 stars to. The backstory, amazing. The writing, chefs kiss. I will think about this book for a very long time. Fantastic.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 August 2024I stumbled across Keri Lake with Nocticadia, and needed more from this author, and now I've found a new obsession. She is a born story teller and you will be sucked into this word like a fleck of dust on the wind. All the tropes I usually don't care for mean nothing when reading this book. She will effortlessly leave you wanting more. I've bitten my nails down to raw skin.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 November 2021What sets this book apart is the history the love story hangs upon and the layered 3 dimensional characters that exist in the grey that lies between the light and the dark. I can't wait for the next instalment and am hoping for more of the same

5.0 out of 5 stars PRAISE FOR NIGHTSHADE
I am editing this review after reading Nightshade for the third time this year. I decided to re-read it before Infernium, and holy infernal lands, it was just as spectacular as the first time. This book gives me legitimate chills -- I am sitting here dumbfounded as to how Keri Lake created such a masterpiece. 5 stars could never be enough.
Keri Lake's writing is always incredible, and this book is no exception. The world-building is intricate and extensive, though not overwhelming. Nightshade is a genius landscape that is both chilling and enchanting. It's a place where suffering is pervasive and obscure and lost souls are not even aware that they are lost. Experiencing it through Farryn's eyes had me on the edge of my seat and so invested in her journey. The plot is brilliant and checks all the boxes for me: angels/demons, paranormal romance, enemies to lovers, fated lovers, commentary on religion and morality, multiple timelines and POVs, a quest for the truth and an ancient prophecy, as well as flawless smut (I must say... I will never look at a bell tower the same way). I mean, come on.
“I have crossed the endless void of time and space, over the centuries I've waited, with a yearning to see your face once more. If you think that I could just let you go now, when fate has gifted me the impossible, then you've not yet met the depths of my obsession. It has no bounds where you're concerned, Farryn. I would fight all the evils of hell for you, but I do not possess the strength to set you free.”
Jericho is the definition of morally grey. It is so refreshing, so satisfying, to come across a male main character with a monstrous reputation that is not a paragon of virtue in disguise. He is powerful beyond measure and reports having a proclivity for darkness and destruction since childhood -- this becomes a fate which he knowingly seals in an act of vengeance. Banished to Nightshade by the Heavens, Jericho lives as a pariah among lost souls with no clear path to redemption, and no real incentive to find one. That is, until Farryn Ravenshaw ends up at his cathedral.
Jericho says it best: “a villain is quite capable of love. It’s only the matter of what he’s willing to sacrifice for that love which separates him from a good man”. Centuries later, when Farryn questions his acts of evil, he asks her, “are the morals of man so black and white?.. I have killed in ways that would seem merciless, and I have loved just as ruthlessly”. He is possessive, unwavering, confident, vindictive, wounded, and powerful beyond measure. Oh, he also has wings and an eye patch. I can't be the only one twisted enough to find him infatuating.
I could go on and on about these characters but I don't want to spoil anything. If you like dark paranormal and/or gothic romance, read this book! You will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't even...
Keri Lake has quickly become one of my fave authors. Her captivating storytelling and well-developed characters have pulled me into her fictional worlds, leaving me eager for each new chapter and book. The way she crafts intricate plots and relatable characters has solidified her as a must-read for me. Keri's vivid and captivating descriptions really make the characters come alive on the page, allowing me to connect with them on an emotional level. Her writing transports me into the story, making me feel like I'm experiencing the events alongside the characters. The rich descriptions paint a vivid picture in my mind, drawing me deeper into the narrative and making the characters feel like real, relatable folks.
Keri really knows how to cook up some super imaginative stuff and stands out from the rest. The way she blends the everyday with the out-of-this-world makes for a reading experience that just sucks you right in.
Honestly, I'd totally give my 5-star reads from this year a do-over - Keri's stuff is the absolute best I've come across! Keri's books are a total must-buy, no doubt about it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Most gripping Gothic romance
I am a huge fan of Keri Lake writing. She creates parallel worlds with such ease, as if they're absolutely real. This book talks about angels, half demons, half angels, prophesied fates and what not!!
Loved this part, and now going to read part two.
