Nightshade: A Dark Paranormal Gothic Romance (Nightshade Duology Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 5,578 ratings

A love so forbidden, it would shake the heavens ...

My father called them messengers.
He once told me they walked among us, and that somewhere in this dark and godless city, there shined a faint sliver of hope. I had only to look for the signs.

Well, I’ve spent my whole life investigating the inexplicable, and all I've found are the unsettling vestiges of iniquity - the evidence of another world shrouded by the obscure. Purgatory to some, where depravity hides in shadows, and girls like me are little more than delicious bites of temptation.

Others call it Nightshade.

This peculiar place is where I first met the cold and callous recluse living in a decaying cliffside cathedral. Jericho Van Croix is the epitome of everything I’ve been told to fear. A raven-winged harbinger who wears intrigue like a warm black cloak. An enigma that I’m determined to unravel – even if it means getting closer than I should.

One touch is forbidden. Even so much as a kiss would be my demise. But the sin on his lips burns me up like a wild flame, and his growing infatuation weakens my resolve.

Giving him what he wants, though, will mean no chance for redemption, or escape. What's worse is, the signs I’ve followed yet failed to see all these years begin to unmask a terrifying reality:

That falling may be my only saving grace.

There’s nothing I don’t love about a Keri lake book. Everything is so intricate and well thought out. Great stories.

I'm always a suck for a bit of reincarnated magic love story add in Keri Lake, and it's a recipe for amazing. I'm kinda sad I left this on my tbr for so long which I will admit is due to the sheer size of this duet and my ability lately to stay focused long enough to even read a standalone. But I loved this book, and I zoomed through the pages as though it was half its size. I loved the back and forth time jumps. I also appreciated the fact that their connection a second time wasn't eyes met and instant because logically, it wouldn't be. Both characters were great, and I can't wait to continue their journey and see how it all plays out in the second book of this duology.

Farryn had somewhat of a loney childhood. After her mother passed away suddenly and unexpectedly, her father became engrossed in his work to the point of neglect to her. He was determined to find out what happened to his wife and wasn't convinced around the circumstances that led to her death. Farryn eventually followed in her father's footsteps studies wise more to try and understand what sent him essentially mad as his colleagues had called it when he then apparently took his own life. When her aunt died, who'd she'd spent the last years being raised, she began to question her father's disappearance as a body had never been found despite him supposedly jumping off a roof. Amongst his many journals, she began to unravel his work and memories unfurled alongside. Believing he was gone at all but on another plane through the veil she sought out a way to go there herself in search of him but once she found herself in nightshade there was a whole other world she uncovered. One that involved reincarnation and another life she had no recollection of. A life she lost and lifetime love as well.

    Read it!!!!

I have said this before but Keri Lake truly is a master story teller. This book only solidifies that opinion. Once again we are given a masterpiece and with her words Ms Lake transports you to another world and you become part of the story. Every word is carefully chosen to give you the ultimate effect of what the author visualises. There are not enough words of praise that I can use for this story. I cannot describe how I feel because I was totally entranced with Farryn and Jericho and their journey and forbidden love. Two very opposites who are destined to be together and are perfect for one another. Very haunting, intense and all consuming, this book will take hold of your soul and never let go. This would have to be the best book that I have ever read. Congratulations to Ms Lake on another masterpiece and thank you for the beautiful privilege to be a part of this journey. The next book is highly anticipated and I am dying to see where Ms Lake takes us. Amazing! Brilliant! Outstanding!

I received an arc copy from the author and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Great world building, beautiful romance development but minimal on the smut. All in all, i will be reading book 2 and believe this author shows promise!

"I will burn down this pathetic world for you. Only you. You are mine … Always"

I love a dark MMC who will torch the world for the FMC and Jericho doesn't disappoint. The author is brilliant at building a dark gothic setting though she also doesn't waste time describing excess things. The world she built was well developed and the story interweaving was well done. A couple of times I was waiting for things to move, or move a little faster but I can also understand why it was paced like it was.

The MMC seems deeper and more developed that the FMC overall and she's somewhat borderline frustrating at times - the balance between strong/victim is tough to get right. I did have a crazy moment where I was furious at a side character only to end up shattered with their outcome - I both love and hate when a book can bring our such strong emotions 🤣

Overall I'm invested enough to finish the duology.

How do you write a review for something so epic?
This story doesn’t traverse just one lifetime, nor does it live only within the earthly plane. No, this love story crosses centuries and into the Nightshade where the non believers reside.

The incredulity and depth with which Keri writes makes me believe that this could be real. That angels and demons and half breeds walk among us. That curses are real and require angels for them to be broken. That a pure soul can tame even the wildest of beasts. But also, that soulmates will sacrifice themselves to keep you safe.

This is an EPIC love story, that has a HFN ending. There are still many beings out to get Farryn and Jericho and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Not for me, he’s physically abusive to her multiple times in the book and she absolutely hates it but the next minute she can’t live without him. I could probably look past it but I felt like there wasn’t enough passion/love between them to make up for that fact.

This book is cleverly written going between two time periods, each with two points of view. This is a hard book to review without spoilers, but it essentially is a love story, so great that it transcends time and death.
This is a paranormal/fantasy gothic romance and Keri has created a whole world with a belief system, language, lore and beings.
Any fantasy readers will love this.

5.0 out of 5 stars PRAISE FOR NIGHTSHADE

I am editing this review after reading Nightshade for the third time this year. I decided to re-read it before Infernium, and holy infernal lands, it was just as spectacular as the first time. This book gives me legitimate chills -- I am sitting here dumbfounded as to how Keri Lake created such a masterpiece. 5 stars could never be enough.

Keri Lake's writing is always incredible, and this book is no exception. The world-building is intricate and extensive, though not overwhelming. Nightshade is a genius landscape that is both chilling and enchanting. It's a place where suffering is pervasive and obscure and lost souls are not even aware that they are lost. Experiencing it through Farryn's eyes had me on the edge of my seat and so invested in her journey. The plot is brilliant and checks all the boxes for me: angels/demons, paranormal romance, enemies to lovers, fated lovers, commentary on religion and morality, multiple timelines and POVs, a quest for the truth and an ancient prophecy, as well as flawless smut (I must say... I will never look at a bell tower the same way). I mean, come on.

“I have crossed the endless void of time and space, over the centuries I've waited, with a yearning to see your face once more. If you think that I could just let you go now, when fate has gifted me the impossible, then you've not yet met the depths of my obsession. It has no bounds where you're concerned, Farryn. I would fight all the evils of hell for you, but I do not possess the strength to set you free.”

Jericho is the definition of morally grey. It is so refreshing, so satisfying, to come across a male main character with a monstrous reputation that is not a paragon of virtue in disguise. He is powerful beyond measure and reports having a proclivity for darkness and destruction since childhood -- this becomes a fate which he knowingly seals in an act of vengeance. Banished to Nightshade by the Heavens, Jericho lives as a pariah among lost souls with no clear path to redemption, and no real incentive to find one. That is, until Farryn Ravenshaw ends up at his cathedral.

Jericho says it best: “a villain is quite capable of love. It’s only the matter of what he’s willing to sacrifice for that love which separates him from a good man”. Centuries later, when Farryn questions his acts of evil, he asks her, “are the morals of man so black and white?.. I have killed in ways that would seem merciless, and I have loved just as ruthlessly”. He is possessive, unwavering, confident, vindictive, wounded, and powerful beyond measure. Oh, he also has wings and an eye patch. I can't be the only one twisted enough to find him infatuating.

I could go on and on about these characters but I don't want to spoil anything. If you like dark paranormal and/or gothic romance, read this book! You will not be disappointed.

What an incredible mind Keri Lake has. I absolutely LOVE this book. Dark, haunting, romantic, sexy mysterious. Keri’s writing and storytelling is immaculate.
The pacing in this is Perfect. Good pacing is something that I really appreciate in a book and when there is a lot of world building that needs to be done and many facets to a story, I think some books can easily leave you feeling confused or things can drag and you’re just waiting for something to happen but with Nightshade every page from start to finish had me engaged.
Loved the characters, the plot is fantastic and how everything unfolded was just brilliant. I was hooked from the beginning and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.

Keri Lake has quickly become one of my fave authors. Her captivating storytelling and well-developed characters have pulled me into her fictional worlds, leaving me eager for each new chapter and book. The way she crafts intricate plots and relatable characters has solidified her as a must-read for me. Keri's vivid and captivating descriptions really make the characters come alive on the page, allowing me to connect with them on an emotional level. Her writing transports me into the story, making me feel like I'm experiencing the events alongside the characters. The rich descriptions paint a vivid picture in my mind, drawing me deeper into the narrative and making the characters feel like real, relatable folks.

Keri really knows how to cook up some super imaginative stuff and stands out from the rest. The way she blends the everyday with the out-of-this-world makes for a reading experience that just sucks you right in.

Honestly, I'd totally give my 5-star reads from this year a do-over - Keri's stuff is the absolute best I've come across! Keri's books are a total must-buy, no doubt about it!
