Our Song

Rate this book
After a devastating accident crushed my dreams, I ended up back in my hometown teaching kindergarten. I was trying to make the best of it. That is, until the world I had to leave behind, showed up in my classroom in the form of a five-year-old little girl. Her father living the exact life I almost had.

Adam Jacobson is known as the bad boy of rock. While he and his band tour the world, they leave a trail of mayhem. What no one knows is behind the music is a caring, straightedge man with a secret — a daughter who the world is about to discover.

When they move to my small town, their secret is blown. He needs my help to keep her out of the media, and with each exchange we grow closer. Only problem is I need to stay away from the memories he ignites, and the temptations he brings my way.

Secrets I’ve kept and thoughts of that fatal night come crashing back into my life. I have to wonder if it was more than fate that brought his little girl into my classroom.

I am a sucker for a sexy, hands-on, single dad, and then add in a sweet storyline with two characters whose chemistry is on fire and I’m hooked. I devoured this story in less than a day.

Our Song is not just another rockstar book. It’s a beautiful, heart-wrenching, story of second chances and now one of my TOP READS of 2019!

Lauren Runow didn’t just write another rockstar book. Nope! Our Song is a concert of words! Every beat, every line is filled with love, family and a breathtakingly beautiful happily ever after. Oh! And let’s not forget the single dad rockstar. Adam Jacobson is EVERYTHING!

Spoilers ahead

Sarah left her small town and her strictly reiligious family behind ostensibly to pursue a degree in education but she also worked hard on her secret dream of singing. Just as things are picking up for Sarah and her band a rival runs into them killing her band mates and causing serious damage to Sarah. With her father furious at her deception Sarah puts that dream behind and focuses on getting better. She moves back to her small-town hometown and becomes a preschool teacher. When Cailin joins her new class Sarah is stunned that she is the daughter of rockstar Adam. As Adam moves to town he and Sarah slowly get involved but the prejudice of the town runs very deep and Sarah's own father is one of their biggest obstacles.

Adam is the tattooed lead singer of his band. His daughter is the most important thing in his life aside from his music, when he settles down he's surprised by her sweet school teacher Sarah who he's attracted too. After a tough childhood in foster care and the death of his daughter's mother Adam isn't close to many people. With his daughter and Sarah he thinks things are finally going his way if only the religious folks would stop seeing hm as a devil

The good thing about this is that Adam was very different from a typical rockstar. He didn't drink, do drugs or have sex with random groupies. He was an amazing father and generally a good man for whom the music was the important part. I really appreciated that.

The bad is that the religious overtones and general prejudice of the town's people felt way way OTT. Sarah's father is a small town pastor but with his influence one world swear he was the president of the US. It was just a bit too much to make the plot believable.

I wanted to sympathize with Sarah but she kept stuff from Adam and acted like her father was the Lord Jesus Christ. She didn't stand up to him until near the very end. I can handle a sweet, kind h but I can't tolerate an h without a backbone

Nothing much happened in the book besides day to day life, Cailin's antics, random moments of nastiness from the town people and a very slow building relationship between Sarah and Adam. I don't like angst for the sake of drama but honestly this book could've done with something more.

While this didn't quite work for me I always appreciate a romance without a manwhore mc or the female equivalent, I liked that Cailin wasn't used as a prop but had a big role in the book though she did come across as quite mature for a preschooler nevertheless for these reasons I'm going with a higher rating than I would've actually rated this book. 1.5* rounded way up to 3 lol

I don’t remember how I came across this book. I just had it in my Bookfunnel library (among 300 books that I got for free in the past) and for some reason I chose to add this to my tbr. That’s probably an indication that I’m really lucky. Not because I got all these books for free (which of course is great, not gonna lie) but because I chose to add this to my tbr. Honestly, I think it’s amazing and it makes me so happy when I choose a random book that nobody else from my friends (who have similar taste to mine) has read and end up loving it.

This book put a smile on my face almost the whole time I was reading it, especially in the first 50%. It’s such a realistic story, with well-developed and likeable characters, with an adorable little kid that always made me smile even if the situation wasn’t the best for her or the main characters.

It’s not just a romantic story between the main characters. It has depth, something you don’t always find in contemporary romance books (at least not in those I have already read). This book deals with a great number of topics and issues that many people have to deal with in their everyday life. I still haven’t read the blurb but if you have any questions about these topics feel free to ask me.

I was in slump before reading this book but guess what, I’m not anymore. This book gave me all the feels but in the end I’m so happy that Sarah and Adam got their HEA.

I know this book is listed as a single parent romance (that I don’t usually go for) but believe me when I say it’s so much more than that. I’m so lucky I picked it and I gave it a chance and I’ll definitely check more books by this author. For the most part I wanted to give it 5 stars but to be completely honest I didn’t enjoy the second half as much as the first and thought about giving 4 stars. But you know what, sometimes I need to chill and congratulate the author for making me feel so many things with her story by giving it a higher rating so 5 stars for this amazing read.

*********************************************

The book starts with a Prologue in which a life-changing event is told… in the least effective way, unfortunately. I felt absolutely nothing! I couldn't feel Sarah’s pain.

*********************************************

Then, we start to read about Sarah’s new life that has changed dramatically after that horrible event. She is sad, having lost her dreams and hopes but I still felt nothing.

*********************************************

Then, by a twist of fate, she meets the man of her dreams – a rock star she has always admired.

Adam is not a rock star that we are used to. He is one with a beautiful soul. He has never been wild, going from one woman to another, never tried drugs etc. He is as straight as possible.

He also has a very lovely daughter, Cailin. I don’t like children much but Cailin was impossible not to love so I couldn’t help but adore her as much as I adored her father :)

The relationship between the father and the daughter was one I always wanted to have but never had :( So, Cailin was one lucky girl!

*********************************************

Unfortunately, the way Adam instantly falls for Sarah was not convincing. It was too insta and it didn't feel real.

I am not one who dislikes insta-love, I do like it when it feels real, passionate and unavoidable but here, it felt like he just liked a new food he tried - no passion whatsoever - just a calm feeling of liking someone and thinking she is the one.

*********************************************

Their first kiss was the worst kissing scene ever written, I guess. It was told by Adam and it was horrible.

Me? Well, still feeling nothing!

*********************************************

And after their badly-written first kiss that made me feel nothing, I seriously considered dropping the book. Then, I decided I could skim and scan to see if it gets any better.

*********************************************

Surprisingly, it gets a little bit better…

After they become a couple, I started to believe in their feelings and the way Adam helps Sarah to relive her dream was heart-warming and very sweet. I finally started to picture them as a couple.

I just wish I had felt their connection at the beginning, I just wish the first half of the book were written better, making me feel it all. Then, it might have been a much better reading experience…

*********************************************

So, to cut it short, I only liked the second half of the book.

And, if I had dropped the book, it would be 1 star only but now it is 2,5 stars.

And for the sake of the hope it gives me in my dark days, I am rounding it up and raising it to 3 stars.

"It’s hard to believe the path that led me here. I never gave up faith and knew God had a plan for me. In the end, it’s exactly what it should be.”

And I hope, all the misfortunes I am suffering from today will eventually lead me to a path that I deserve in the end... Amen!

The book also gives a Bible verse that I love so much:

Matthew 7: Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

And yes, many characters in the book judge Adam in a way he doesn't deserve just because he is a rock star and through that experience, the book also deals with the concepts of judgement, tolerance, faith, belief, forgiveness and hope.

*********************************************

The book ends in a sweet and happy tone but the actual Epilogue is only sent to you by e-mail if you subscribe to the writer's page.

I just wish it didn't follow the tradition of ending a couple's story with marriage and having a child. It's so cliché in my opinion but well, for the lovers of marriage and kids, it does end in the traditional way, giving us all. I just could have done without the pregnancy news, assuming they would have a child together eventually some time in the future; it didn't have to be right now, but that's the "weird me", I guess, because nearly everyone else likes the Epilogues with marriage and babies.

*********************************************

P.S. I would have liked it more if the songs Adam wrote for Sarah and Cailin were also written and included in the novel itself. I tried to imagine the words that affected them so much but the actual songs would have been so much better if Ms. Runow bothered to write them herself.

In a book about musicians where the main characters write songs for each other, we, the readers, would like to see them, read the words if not hear the melody... Well, just saying...

"How is the guy I thought was the ultimate bad boy turning out to be anything but?"

Lauren has a beautiful way with words and she proofed this yet again with this book. The story of Sarah and Adam plays every single emotional chord within your heart. This is one of those books I dreaded to end but couldn't read it fast enough at the same time.

"I allow her to catch me as I fall for her even more."

Adam is a dream come true. If I could bake my dream guy he would definitely be like Adam. I'm a sucker for rockstars and if it's one with a beautiful soul, a heart of gold and a daughter like Cailin I'm definitely a goner.

Sarah is also a captivating soul, beautiful inside out. I love how she cared for Cailin and later for Adam. I loved how she came back to her old self and how Adam was the reason for it. Their chemistry is off the charts and adorably addicting.

Cailin was definitely the highlight and sunshine through this whole book. I loved her to bits and pieces. And the way Adam was with his daughter was absolutely heart-melting.

"Magic. Nothing but pure magic fills the air as we sing in tune for the first time together."

Our Song is a reminder that we should remember our dreams and fight for them. I loved every note of it.

Single dad? ☑

Single dad is a rock star? ☑☑☑

Adam and Sarah's story is a slow burn of a story. After her dreams were shattered, she's been living, but not living life to the fullest.

Until Adam walks into her life.

I completely and utterly adore Adam. He is not what is expected of the rock star, and his daughter is the absolute bees knees. Shes a 30 year old in a 5 year old's body, but you cannot help but smile whenever she is on the page.

This whole story has the feel of Footloose, except with rock music instead of dancing being the worst thing in the world.

One thing though (this is my thing and won't bother anyone else) - I am an athiest and all the God and church stuff was just ugh. Sarah's dad being a Pastor and being such a judgemental ar$e frustrated me. Again, this is my issue, nothing to do with the story or anything.

I enjoyed falling in love along with our lovelies, and I am looking forward to what Ms Runow brings us in the future.

This story is an off the charts, non stop page turner. Adam is not your average single father, he’s also the lead singer for Devil’s Breed. Your heart will swoon over this man and the way he interacts with Cailin, it’s the way you’d want to see a dad bond with his child. Sarah’s living the life she’s been brought up to live after following her heart and being knocked down from her dreams. This story is heartfelt, heartbreaking and romantic all rolled together into a down to earth tale of what happens when you judge by what’s on the surface and not from within. There are a lot of rockstar romance’s out there and I’ve read my fair share of them but this book consumed me, I never wanted to put my kindle down. I found myself tearing up at times both from sadness as well as joy. Beautifully written with a guaranteed HEA. I feel this is a book I can read multiple times and never get tired of these characters.

I am a sucker for a small town romance and OUR SONG delivered the. I love a book that has a rock star as it's male protagonist and this had that too. A single father? Check! Forbidden romance? Check!
music? Check! Check! Check!

Our song was a beautiful emotional story.
There was honestly nothing mind-blowing about it but the almost seamless mundane flow of it was relaxing.

I'm a Christian and this story was about looking inside not the outside.... it's quite original and characters are very well developed. If they are a big rough around the edges (Pastor Russo) or cute as a bug's ear (the daughter) it's all a well paced story.

So it's not a Christian story exactly but almost every step of the way we see how paths cross and God guided them even through very tough times to each other.

We can see where foster kids can come through and be successes with a little help and also show hard hearts how love really is.

Great read.

I’ve always felt that the lyrics and melodies of songs speak to the musicians who create them and their listeners in all kinds of ways, and the power of music and words is definitely something explored in Lauren Runow’s newest release, Our Song. It’s made clear that music is not just a career that’s made the hero famous; it’s a way for him to express himself…to show the world who he is and what he thinks…and it’s a way for his fans to not only connect with him but also to absorb his words and apply them to their own lives.

Adam Jacobson may appear to be a typical out of control rock star, but there’s definitely more to him that the persona he created for his fans, and it’s the man and father he is beneath his rocker facade that will endear him to readers.
And I love how unexpected Adam’s character is…because while he and his band seem to live up to the outrageous life and antics that the media portrays them to have, Adam knows what truly matters in life and he does his best to put his daughter first, protecting her at all costs.

Sarah used to live her life and dream of her future, but now, since everything shattered around her, she’s merely existing, moving through each day without the same passion or thirst for life that she once had. And her pastor father is not a source of support for her; he’s one of recriminations and damnation, which is not what she needs in order to find happiness and peace again. But a sweet little girl changes things for Sarah and then once that little girl’s father comes into Sarah’s life, everything changes, giving her something that she hasn’t had in quite some time - hope.

Adam and Sarah’s respective pasts absolutely dictate their present, but they help one another to understand that they don’t have to be a constant force of pain and regret, and as they spend more time together, these two realize how things could be, if only they could let go and live in the moment.

The supporting cast of characters all add to the story line and to how readers view the main characters, but Cailin, for sure, steals the show, illustrating the innocence of childhood, the purity of love, and the reason adults can understand what joy is. She’s adorable and more grown up than she should be for somebody her age, but it’s her views on life and love that help both Adam and Sarah to believe again and to look forward to a potential future they can have together.

Our Song is a slow burn romance - one that allows the hero and heroine to truly get to know one another before they step into something bigger, and given who Adam is and what he does for a living, it was the right move to make. This was my first book by Lauren Runow and I’ll definitely be checking out more of her stories because the lessons she teaches through her storytelling and characters are easy to access and understand.

WOW! Our Song by romance author Lauren Runow is in-freaking-credible! There have been very few books lately that have made me feel the way I do right now after having finished reading this story! I really, really did not want this book to end, and am hoping we will see more beyond this in the future! It is everything!

The way the author incorporated the singing (at church, home, etc)…is so smoothly blended into the storyline! The characters are so well developed and just so perfectly written! From rock star Adam Jacobson, pastor’s daughter-singer-turned-kindergarten teacher Sarah Russo, Adam’s adorable 6 year old daughter Cailin, the band, Sarah’s judgmental pastor father and family, Maggie, to Linda….I am so in love with all the characters in Our Song! I love how Ms. Runow wrote both Adam and Sarah’s characters so, so, so much; I could feel them in my soul!

My heart is pounding out of control. I feel like I’ve taken my first hit of drugs, and I’m addicted—addicted so bad that I might not be able to breathe if I don’t get more.

This love story has several topics the author addressed…single parent, rock star, small town, religion, child neglect/abuse, foster children, drugs/alcohol abuse, death, dreams and aspirations. Lauren Runow did an absolutely amazing job wrapping all of these situations into this phenomenal story line that will have you heartbroken, cringing, swooning, and honestly thinking about your stance on some of these topics, and how you are with stereotypes.

This is one of those you-will-not-want-to-put-it-down books! It will give you “all the feels!” It is a solid 5 star read!

A different type of Rockstar romance -- one with a little bit of everything tossed into the mix. I loved the characters, who both have suffered from an abundance of hurt and broken spirits in their lives. Add in a precious little girl who gets five-stars all on her own for bringing her own sunshine into the story. "Our Song" is a really entertaining read, written with wonderful meaning, depth and plot.

The heroine's dad is a minister so expect a bit of "higher power" mentions -- but shares the limelight with a ton of bad language and heated chemistry as well.

Quick, easy and fun-to-read with a positive message and a delightful Epilogue and an extended one, too.

Hold my hand?

I’m a sucker for, the hands-on single-father romance book, add, in rock-star and I'm a-gonna!

To the point it caused me, to do that ugly-teary-smile, the one you try ever-so-hard to hide, from passing bystanders, but, you're too happy with the story, that you just can’t help, but let them flow freely down your face.

*red and splotchy face*

This story was swimming in emotion, self-growth, and a lovely dose of forgiveness; with a sprinkling of cuteness, second chances, and love.

It brought in so much pain and yet, so...much happiness; it was completely overwhelming, I fell off the cliff, and madly in love.

What a sublimely wonderful read! I absolutely love authors that can take a beloved romance trope and make it truly, uniquely, their own. Ms. Runow has done just that, and so much more, with this story, starting out with a rock star hero who "falls for teacher"--this time, his daughter's kindergarten instructor. But Sarah is the preacher's daughter fighting some bad baggage from her past, as well as the judgmental scrutiny of her family. The strong attention to detail with both character's back stories, along with some amazing secondary characters, sealed the deal on making this book a five-star read for me. Larger emotional issues came into play during the book's last act, ensuring I truly couldn't put it down until I sighed in bliss over the last words. Emotional, beautiful, intense and swoon-worthy..."Our Song" is a symphony of romantic mastery from the VERY talented Ms. Runow.

I am love this story!!! I am a suck for a love story but this story is so much more. It is about finding your dreams and then loosing everything just as quickly. A story about settling for less than what you want and not realizing that the fire for your dreams is still burning. Pick up this book and you won't be able to put it down because you need to know what will happen next!!

Our Song is another great story from Lauren!

Adam is a single father. He’s also a rock star. Sarah is a kindergarten teacher who has his daughter in his class. Adam and Sarah have undeniable chemistry but there is more to this story. Will they be together? Will her father be an issue?

I loved Adam- he was sweet and sincere and a great father. Sarah was so sweet and strong. And Cailin was adorable.

This story was beautifully written and emotional and some of the scenes gave me the chills. The use of music into the story was clever and totally added to it.

Our song is a sweet story with little drama you will fall in love with.

"Our Song by Lauren Runow was a unique and powerful read. This book transcends "tropes" as the author tells the reader a story.
Sarah and Adam’s story absolutely kept me glued to my kindle and heart wanting them to find a happy together.
Sarah's past has her returning home to her small town, the how her past is revealed is so perfect and the way in which Adam steps into her life is pure literacy genius
As Sarah and Adams navigate the pull they have for each other and the shared love of music the pure connection bleeds off the pages.
I adored how this is not a falling for the rockstar but a connection between two adults who want to make love work.
I am only saying this last part because the blurb hints at... the use of Cailin was masterful. I am not saying any more please read the book!"

Rock Star small town romance

A well written storyline beautifully put together by an author I have never read before. But being really honest in this my review, the book was an amazing read, but just not for me! The rock boy meets girl has never been a trope I would read. Although this is well worth reading! The main characters had a lot of depth to them and you could not help but love and like the adorable Cailin, Adam’s sweet daughter. When parent’s like Sarah’s Pastor father let her down with his own cold judgements in Adam’s and his own daughters life choices I was so angry! Which I suppose makes a good book as I had many emotions in this book, sadness, laughter, with the joy of love.

Sarah’s attempt to chart her own course and follow her dreams ended in a violent tragedy that finds her back in her hometown and living the life that her parents want for her. This is not the life she wants to live but she believes it is what she deserves until one of the kindergarten students and her father show her that she is destined for so much more.

Adam is a famous rock star who is also a single father to daughter Cailin who is the driving force of his life. He has a painful past and is so much more than the tattooed rocker he appears to be however convincing the townspeople has been a challenge.

There is no denying the chemistry and connection between them and Adam is determined to not only help Sarah heal from her past but give her the strength and support she needs to pursue her dreams. I received a complimentary copy of the audiobook and thought the narrators did a great job with all the voices and it was easy to differentiate the different characters.

This is the first book by Ms. Runow that I have had the pleasure of reading and I am not sure why I haven’t read any sooner. I will be changing that really soon. This story will hit you in the heart. I loved it so much. Adam and Sarah were an amazing couple. This book was amazing. The story was wonderfully written and you feel like you know them personally. What an epic love story for them. Past issues shaped each character into who they are in the present and you get to see how Sarah will overcome that issue to get what she has always wanted. I highly recommend this book.

I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars!! From the very first page I was locked into these characters and could not put the book down. It was completely filled with emotionally charged secrets and an accident that destroyed a future. Adam Jacobson and his adorable daughter Cailin not only show the reader that you cannot judge a book by it's cover but that everyone has crosses to bear. Throw in Sarah Russo and the plot just got better. Devastatingly beautiful is the only way I can describe it. Not only is this a must read but it will be one you will want to read again and again.

I really enjoyed this book. Sarah had been an aspiring musician when a tragedy changed her career path. Adam is a rock star, and a single father. While the rest of the town judges him based on his looks and music, Sarah actually understands him. I loved them together, and Adam was an amazing father. The interactions with his daughter are priceless.

I did think the situation with Sarah's father was resolved a bit quickly, and I had a hard time buying he would come around so quickly after just one talk with Adam, while Sarah had been trying to get him to support her dreams for years with no luck. Still, I was happy it was resolved.

I hope the other band members get their own books, because they seem like an interesting bunch!
