Something Unexpected Kindle Edition
When my grandmother found out she didn’t have long to live, she embarked on a crazy trip—jumping out of airplanes and scuba diving with sharks.
After I repeatedly voiced my concern, Gram blocked me—her own grandson—on text and social media, leaving me only her travel companion Eleanor’s number.
Eleanor started sending me pictures of Gram’s adventures. At first she seemed nice, but when I attempted to persuade her to talk some sense into her friend, she told me where I could stick my advice. After that, photos arrived with snarky comments, and Eleanor and I got into it on more than one occasion.
When I heard Gram’s upcoming plans were more dangerous than ever, I hopped on a plane.
Since I arrived late, I headed to the bar for a drink, figuring I’d surprise her in the morning.
To my delight, I met a gorgeous woman looking for a no-strings-attached night. Nora was just what I needed. She invited me back to her room, telling me to give her a ten-minute head start. But when I went to pay her bar tab, I realized how much she’d had to drink. As much as I wanted to ignore it, I couldn’t. So I stood Nora up.
I knew she’d be pissed, but I also knew I’d never see her again.
Except never came a little early. Namely, the next morning when I went to meet my grandmother and her evil-spinster friend. Because old Eleanor turned out to be young Nora from last night. And if I thought the woman disliked me before, that was nothing compared to how ticked-off she was now. Or how unhappy she was going to be that their party of two was about to become a party of three.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2025Every time I read a Vi Keeland or a Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward book, (and I’ve read them all) I know I’m in for a good time and this book did not disappoint. I laughed out loud so much. And I also cried so much and had all the feels. That’s what a good book does to you. It pulls you into that world and makes you part of the people in it. Such a wonderful story. Please read this book worth 1000 stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2023I love Vi Keeland and her books, the ones she writes solo and in collaboration with others are for the most part, fantastic. This was really well written but poorly researched in regards to the medical/health care details. I loved all of the characters and their development. They were very authentic and the dialogue was fantastic. This is where I think this author really shines, creating characters that are so engaging and emotionally authentic that you fall in love with them, even if they annoy the crap out of you. She could have done a lot more research around the medical details since they were really terribly depicted. She also could have named what healthcare services that would allow Louise to complete her bucket list, either hospice or palliative care as they both focus on quality of life in the face of serious illness.
I guessed the direction of the plot right away and it was a nice touch. I'm glad that there was a happily ever after, but how this came about is what I am really unhappy with. I would have rated this lower except that I'm grateful that she brought this topic out in the open and hopefully will have people reflecting on what they would want for themselves at end-of-life.
Making the choice to forgo treatment for a life limiting illness is not only personal but incredibly challenging to make, even with supportive people in your life. And the best way to do that is either with the support of palliative care or hospice. And this is what is disappointing. This is such a poorly understood area of healthcare that VK had the opportunity to highlight it as an option for quality care at end-of-life that focuses on how someone wants to engage in their life - how they want to live. You can continue treatment with palliative care.
Another way to have medical support to do this bucket list is by utilizing hospice. Another poorly understood service in healthcare. The support of hospice could have supported Louise in going after her bucket list. Louise would have called their agency when symptoms developed, even while they were out of the country at an time of the day, and they would have figured out the best thing to do. And even if Louise had a major medical event, she could still go to the hospital if she wanted to. You'd just unenroll in hospice. Honestly, hospice is one of the best ways to support someone at end-of-life in completing their bucket list, because you're no longer tied to appointments or to the hospital. A really missed opportunity to educate on services that more people should utilize and utilize earlier in their disease process, not just a few days before someone dies.
***Spoilers ***
And while this was well depicted, again a missed opportunity for VK: the use of "fighting" language when people decide to forgo treatment. Fighting language related to serious illness can be so damaging because sometimes it's completely unrealistic. Deck talking about Nora and Louise "quitting" or not fighting because they decided on no more treatments, although in Louise's case there weren't any treatment options that would change the course of the disease other than palliative radiation which would be for symptom control, is so undermining of the difficult choice they were making. Deck "begging" Nora to "try" is a big part of why some people do not make the choice to focus on their quality of life. The sad truth about cancer is that sometimes your body gets to a place where it can't do anymore, and it has nothing to do with a person's will or motivation. Fighting language often leaves a person feeling like a failure because they couldn't "overcome" their illness, that they did something wrong, when it was the nature of their disease that brought them to this point. And they're the only person living in their own bodies. There isn't a solution to every medical problem and that's a sad fact of life, and the person who is ill knows that better than anyone else. Sometimes when people chase those shot in the dark treatments it take away their opportunity to live their life on their own terms, in favor of an unlikely long tail outcome.
The way Deck approached the illnesses of his loved ones (basically in denial and not wanting to face it) creates a lot of the problems for advance care planning. When you have that attitude, there are so many missed opportunities to really SPEAK to your loved ones about what is important to them and what choices they would want a surrogate to make for them. This conversation is such a gift to the people you love because if they are ever in the position where they need to make decisions, they can truly understand what is important to that person.
To me this was a GIANT missed opportunity to address how awful fighting language can be when someone is facing a serious illness. This is also where the medical details falls apart. Someone with the advanced metastatic cancer that Louise had is extremely unlikely to be as functional as she was and she certainly wouldn't have been that way with such a large mass in her brain. That one thing alone would have affected a lot of things in her body. The romanticizing of end-of-life also creates unrealistic expectations for people really facing the illnesses described. The details post transplant were also poorly researched.
And medically, Louise and Nora were not in the same situation. Louise had no other treatment options that would have altered the course of her disease. Something that is poorly understood for a lot of patients with advanced cancer is that treatment offered at that point is largely palliative in nature, to hopefully control symptoms such as pain or discomfort. Since she wanted to focus on comfort, the best support for a normal person (not someone independently wealthy) would have been hospice.
Nora still had a shot in the dark treatment option that would have changed the course of her disease (as it was depicted as not having metastasized yet). She would have been a great candidate for palliative care while she was on the transplant list. The palliative care team would work with her cardiac team to help support her while not choosing anything invasive and still be eligible to get a transplant. But another sad truth is that many people die on the transplant list and again, if Nora's disease was that advanced, functionally she would have been more affected.
The resolution to Nora's story is what makes it difficult for a lot of people to have difficult conversations or to elect hospice. There are so few people who get the opportunity that Nora had. That's not to say that people shouldn't hope or try for it anyway, but everyone thinks that they will be the exception. There is absolutely a way to keep hope but also face the reality of numbers. A good palliative care provider would have been the best way for Nora to do this and that's what I wish could have been highlighted and explained.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2025This book was definitely an emotional rollercoaster, and I loved every minute of it. Nora and Beck's story was heartwarmingly beautiful. And Louise was so freaking funny, I wish I had a grandmother like her. Nora is wild and adventurous and just what Beck needed. This book was not what I expected it to be; It was so much more. This book was definitely a five-star read.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2025Nora and Beck's is one of the most sole-stirring stories ever! She was helping his grandmother fulfill her bucket list. He was divorced and only did one night stands, until he loved arguing with Nora so much, it touched his heart. Lots of satisfying twists and turns, and heartbreaking developments. Thank you Vi for telling it perfectly!

I’m struggling to review this book because one part of me wants to say that this was one of the funniest books I’ve ever read (which it was), but another part of me wants to say that it’s one of the saddest books I’ve ever read (which it also was.) It seems weird for these two things to so effortlessly go together, but Vi intertwined them just right to create such an impactful message in this book.
I normally include a section in my reviews dedicated to each of the main characters in the romance, but for this one I feel like I need to tell you about Louise, too. Louise is the friend of our Heroine and the grandmother of our Hero. Louise has cancer and has decided to live her life to the fullest by checking off her bucket list in her last months. She is such a hilarious and amazing character in this book. There were so many moments that left me in a fit of giggles from her antics. She brought life to this book and was so pivotal to the relationship between the Hero and Heroine. I don’t think I will ever forget about Louise.
Okay, now let's talk about the grump of the book. Beck is your typical bossy, office-type grump. But let me tell you about the soft side he has for the women in his life. WHEW. Watching this man's walls come down and seeing him come to Louise and Nora’s rescue time and time again had me swooning hard! He loves with his whole heart and when he falls he falls hard! Oh and did I mention he’s a single dad too?
Nora, Nora, Nora. She is such a fierce heroine who is there to live life right alongside Louise and make sure none of her grumpy grandsons stop her from enjoying the rest of the time she has left. She's Bonnie to Louise’s Clyde. I loved her to pieces and she continued to surprise me with her strength throughout this book.
Nora and Beck will forever be one of my favorite couples. They had off-the-charts chemistry, a funny dynamic, and an emotional connection that will make you teary-eyed. If any couple was a perfect pair it would be Nora and Beck.
This book is the type to stay with you forever. It’s a wonderfully well-rounded read. It truly was Something Unexpected.

5.0 out of 5 stars I laughed and I cried. Such an emotional roller coaster
I stayed up until really late reading this book. I loved it. I laughed at the antics of Louise. She cracked me up with the things she said. I loved her relationship with Nora. I laughed at the situations Louise and Nora got themselves into sometimes. I loved how much Beck loved his grandmother and tried so hard to respect her wishes, even if he hated them. I loved the chemistry between Nora and Beck. I cried when the truth came out, and part of me wondered why I hadn’t seen it coming. I loved that in the end, a massive chance was taken, even if it didn’t guarantee tomorrow. Loved this book. A real emotional roller coaster. I think this was one of my all time favourite reads by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars very emotional story of terminal illness
Excellent extremely emotional story
How does one cope and act when it’s been diagnosed with a terminal disorder? What when you know you’re going to die soon.. the clock is ticking … but how much time do you still have??
how does one treat the people you love , and they you?
There was a large section where I could hardly read the words due to the flood of tears
