New York Times bestselling author E.K. Blair delivers in this extraordinary coming-of-age novel.

"Poignant, realistic, and thick with emotion."

This wasn't supposed to happen.
But it did.
This wasn't supposed to be my life.
But it was.

I was just a typical girl, living a typical life. Nothing was out of the ordinary until tragedy threw me into a turnstile I couldn't see my way out of. That was, until him.

I never could've imagined my heart falling the way it did. Hard, fast, and with unbounding beauty.

The only problem?
He was off limits.
Forbidden.

But he became my everything, and I became his, so we risked it all. It was only a matter of time until I realized that our risk came with unimaginable consequences.

My name is Camellia Hale and his is David Andrews, and this is our love story.

This story begins on a lighthearted note, everybody’s upbeat and happy why shouldn’t they be... it’s the end of term.
Cam has a special bond with her father that is obvious almost immediately, they share a love and passion for swimming, he’s a swim coach at the school and he’s done just that... coached her to where she is now.
Now, we’ve been here before with E.K. Blair where everything changes in a blink of an eye early on... this is what happens here, there is no warning.
You are only a few pages in and already you are reeling at what has just happened. From this moment on nothing is the same for Cam, her life as she knew it is no more.
Utter greif and devastation is one way to describe what you are reading. It’s only the beginning and it carries on this way for the whole story just at varying degrees depending how it affects you and your own personal thoughts/veiws.
Cam loosing her father has a knock on affect to absolutely everything that involves Cam’s day to day life, she hasn’t just lost her father she lost everything.
David met Cam briefly as she was about to leave with her father and you don’t think too much of it... why should you he’s just the knew swim coach that’s all but you have no idea at this stage how important David will become to Cam and vice versa.
This fabulous author pulls out all the stops with this heartbreaking story. Cam and David’s love for each other is very real they know this but the problem is everybody else. For starters David is Cam’s teacher add to that about a fifteen year age gap and it doesn’t look good, everything is stacked against them, they will judge, we all judge it’s the natural thing to do and because of this very reason they keep their relationship a secret.
Secret Lucidity is 318 pages but seems way more simply because of the content. E.K.Blair pulls no punches with her writing skills, she goes above and beyond with putting us through everything that Cam is going through, you live day to day with her you feel all her pain and then there is a David.
Everything has broken down, Cam’s relationship with her mother is practically none existent and all her friends that were... are no more, .Cam is suffering in silence as well as trying to hold onto her home as her mother is incapable of doing so.
Amongst all the grief and sadness David is there at every turn he will not give up on Cam and it’s the only time Cam is happy... when they are together, but how long before something happens to spoil what they share.
Cam and David are so close but unfortunately the inevitable happens, thanks to a certain someone.
From about 70% this story has you absolutely hanging on for dear life, it’s full on and as we witness again everything fall apart for not only Cam but for David too, for the both of them, you can only try and guess what the outcome might be...either way it doesn’t look good.
I’m not saying anything else just that E.K. Blair is fantastic..!!
    Thank you.

Camellia appears to have it all, the family, the house, the perfect swim score and promising future. Well, until it’s all ripped away from her...

    Excerpt:

Cam slowly pulls away from everyone and everything she knows. Isolating herself in a bubble of her own personal pain. As she battles with grief, anger and loneliness, she finds herself leaning on someone she shouldn’t. The one person who can connect with her pain. Her coach.

As the forbidden romance unwinds, I couldn’t help but want it to be a little more forbidden. The love story and the sex scenes were phenomenal but I wanted more angst. But overall,I seriously adored this book. Given how different it is from the others I’ve read by E.K. Blair, it was a pleasant change, but certainly not unwelcomed.

My first E.K Blair book and one of my favourite genre; teacher/student. I thought this book was SO emotional and tragic in ways and I loved it so much. It was beautifully written, full of angst, emotion, and subjects that sometimes outshone the teacher/student ones.

This book was told in Cam's POV, so even though I loved David's character we didn't really get into his head space to feel what he was truly experiencing. Cam was a difficult character for me to get in to at first, she was too sulky and spoiled but when her circumstances change then we get to see a different side of her, what happens to her and her family changes her whole life and we the reader get taken along for the ride.
Somethings were difficult to read about, their whole situation was tragic and at times so sad. Cam's mother was someone who I struggled with and felt that the way her character was portrayed a little unbelievable at times and how she dealt with certain things were really "out there" and not acceptable for my liking, I appreciate that we all respond differently to grief but this woman was just unbelievable in my opinion.

The characters as a whole were well written and likable but the book would have come across better in alternate POV's from Cam and David.

A really good emotional book that I am glad to have experienced and certainly one I would recommend !!

Few trigger warnings for this one - suicide/self harm and student teacher romance.
I want to start with saying that I actually didn’t like the leading lady in this , Cam (Camellia) HOWEVER I still felt the passion between her and David was real and I totally bought into it so don’t be put off if you don’t like Cam either!
Cam is 17 and David is her English teacher and swimming coach, he’s 14 years older than Cam. Student teacher relationship stories are often controversial but I felt this was written really well and sensitively.
Plenty of angst and emotion which is always good for me. Just do be aware of the trigger warnings as in a few places it got me but I feel that shows the authors talent in her writing. Will definitely read more from EK Blair, hopefully I’ll like the leading lady next time.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best student/teacher books I have ever read

    Secret Lucidity by EK Blair
    5 stars!!!

“This is us – victims of love.”

Two five star reads on the bounce and EK Blair is back with a bang with Secret Lucidity. This is EK Blair at her very best and this book has earned its place on my EK Blair favourites list. I have always had an incredibly soft spot for Fading, Freeing & Falling, but this one is right up there with them.

“…if I’m going to give you the broken pieces of me, then I’m going to want yours too.”

EK Blair brings to the table a forbidden love book, student and professor and while I absolutely love this trope, the best bit about this book…EMOTION!! I literally spent the first 30 odd percent of this book in floods of tears as our heroine’s life is changed forever. I felt Camellia’s pain, I lived and breathed it, I experienced it and was in total awe as EK Blair made this character bleed on every page. This was raw and emotional and what an incredible start to a book. When an author nails a character like this I always sit back in admiration, my whole body was literally wrung out and if there is ever a character you will find yourself rooting for, it is our Camellia.

“I feel unlovable…I’m too far beyond lost, and I don’t know how to find my way back. I’m starting to wonder if there even is a way back.”

This book was beautifully crafted, perfectly paced and one of the most hauntingly emotional books I have ever had the pleasure of reading, but it is not all doom and gloom. Oh no, as I said, student/teacher and this one has all the feels. I loved the slow burn, at no point did I feel that David was a predator. Although Camellia was considered underage at seventeen, here in the UK, legal age is sixteen, so for me, age wasn’t a problem. But, for me, these two were believable. I felt their connection, the chemistry was off the charts and these two fell for each other hard, when the world wanted to keep them apart.

“…know that, no matter what they say, no matter how wrong we were for doing what we did, together all those wrongs created the most exquisite right. So, this is it. This is how our love story ends.”

The depth of these characters was flawless, sheer brilliance as EK Blair immerses the reader into the desperate lives of two people that are incredibly flawed and yet bring out the best in one and other. Each heals the other and while you would scream dependency, it wasn’t like that, these two just clicked, they worked, and they loved hard.

“This is wrong. But when the whole world is spitting its wrongs at me, what the hell is just one more?”

The angst level was way up there, but nothing superfluous. The twists and turns had my guts churning, my heart breaking, my eyes leaking and my emotions all over the place. Expertly crafted this book is one incredible roller coaster of emotions that will have you running the gamut of every single feeling you can muster. This is one of the most epic love stories I have ever had the pleasure of reading and is proof that age is just a number. The heart wants who the heart wants, you don’t choose who you love…love chooses you.

“Because that’s what love is; it’s the same as death – it’s a separation from reality. It’s a moment suspended in time, and when it’s over, that’s it – your moment is gone. All you’re left with is this – this right here – mourning memories of what will never be again.”

Seriously amazing, emotional, unputdownable and a love story I will never forget and will definitely be re-reading. My only gripe…I wanted more. Keeping my fingers for a very extended epilogue in the future.

This would have to be on of the hardest, saddest book that I have ever read. The raw emotional turmoil that Cam went through after the loss of a loved one and the depths in which she found herself. Her sorrow bleeds through the pages and I just wanted to reach in a give her a hug and tell her that , I See Her.
The storyline is gripping and the author did a fantastic job on giving us a story about real life problems.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unique, Emotional Rollercoaster Ride Read #SecretL
Reviewed in the United States on 26 February 2018
Forbidden romances are the best to read because they are enticing and exciting; its like you are living on the edge and may not be able to come back from whatever you are about to do . It gives you this high feeling but it’s also seductive and tempting. That is what makes forbidden romances my favorite and this story has taboo and forbidden all over it. This is a student / teacher story but it is so much more than that.
In "Secret Lucidity," EK Blair took the age old story of a forbidden student/ teacher romance and then put her own special spin with twist on it. This is a story of deep loss, grief, terrible pain and a forbidden tragic love story. Emphasis on the tragic and forbidden. I do not want to give too much of the story away but what I will say is that Camellia is a young girl in high school who had it all- she had a boyfriend who she cared about, was going into her senior year, was the top swimmer on her swimming team and life was good for her…until everything crashed and burned. She was left floundering , rudderless and aimless. Cam was in tremendous pain and didn’t know how to stop this pain. Into the picture comes David, the new English teacher and swimming coach. He left his past behind to try and start anew. He meets Cam and suddenly he knows he has to stay away from this beautiful girl with the sad eyes. He is older than her by 14 years but he knows if he lets it happen, those 14 years wont matter. Only thing is, David can see what others cant. How bad Cam is struggling—Can he let her wither away or can he be the person who reaches out and drags her back in? At what risk to him?
I seriously didn’t know what I was getting into when reading this story but OMG the emotions are raw, gritty, emotional, deep… I knew David and Cam were going to own me by the time this story ended and oh yes, they did. This isn’t a story that will leave you with warm fuzzies but it will make you think and it will have you falling in love with David many times over. This book was a roller-coaster ride full of emotions that once you get on, you better hang on for the full ride. I felt so bad for Cam. She and David made sense even though to many they probably didn’t. My heart ached and my tissue box got a work out when I read this story. I loved it but if I had anything that I wished could be changed then I would say--- I do wish the story showed what happened to them instead of ending as it did. When reading the book, you will understand. Overall this is one fantastic read and I look forward to reading what Ms. Blair has next.

    My Rating: 4.5 stars *****

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfectly written student/teacher romance
Reviewed in the United States on 4 March 2018
Secret Lucidity is unlike any student-teacher romance I have read before. The angst, the heartbreak, the emotional story we were taken on Cam and David's story is beautiful and so gripping that I was unable to put this book down!

Cam has the picture perfect life, she's about to enter her senior year of high school, and nothing could go wrong, until tragedy strikes and her world seem to spiral out of control. She loses herself, and the people who she should want to run to for help, she feels no connection to anymore, and the one person she should stay away from, is the one person whom she can open up to and really start to grieve over everything that has happened.

Cam and David's story is definitely taboo, he's her teacher, he's a lot older, and yet.. I couldn't help but want these two to be together. He was the only one who truly understood her when she needed someone, because he understood her pain. He pushed her away, and then they just couldn't stay away. They helped heal each other in some ways, and their love story is truly beautiful, but I knew it was going to have some sort of fall out, and I was hoping it wasn't, since Cam had been through enough, and when it did, UGH I wanted to scream and throw my kindle through the wall..

This book was beautifully written, the story.. my goodness, it was amazing. Cam is a beautiful character that is definitely strong, even when she is weak. She has gone through so much and yet continues to move forward. She fights for what she wants, and let's things happen on her own time, not when others think they should. She is a beautifully written character, and yes, I can see how some would want to hate her or may dislike her for some of the things she did, or how she acted at times in this book, but I think it was all a part of her grieving process. I actually despised most of the characters in this book EXCEPT David and Cam. I loved the two of them together and was rooting for them from the very beginning. I hope one day E.K. Blair will give us more of their story, as I really, really want to see what happens next, but I will say, this was an amazing story, and one you should definitely one-click if you're a lover of student-teacher romance, or just a lover of angsty new adult reads!
