Sombra (Love in Translation Book 2) Kindle Edition
"LUSH… Sombra is MY FAVORITE kind of read, unexpected and a total ROMANTIC ESCAPE." ~ Jay Crownover, New York Times bestselling author
My life had been unlived.
The safe major at the safe school. The safe boyfriend with his safe promises.
Then I stepped off the plane in Madrid and saw him. Of all the men in Spain, he has to be the very hottest.
That crooked smile. That devastating charm. Don’t even get me started on how he plays the Spanish guitar.
For the very first time, my life feels like my own.
But I’m not the only one who’s made promises.
Despite the heat between us, Tavo has his own bargain to keep, a marriage for the family’s honor.
All those delicious muscles and he’s a man of honor, too. It’s a real shame about his obnoxious fiancée.
Faster than you can pour the wine, my life’s become a Shakespearean comedy.
But you know what they say: Everything in moderation. Including virtue.
"This book is phenomenal! ME. TAVO. OLIVE OIL = HAPPINESS." ~ RC Boldt, author of Ditched
"Leslie McAdam has done it again... Sombra is COMPLEX, inspirational, and WELL-WRITTEN. A romance that truly delivers." ~ New York Times bestselling author Kim Karr
"This is THE MOST BEAUTIFUL STORY OF SELF-DISCOVERY AND LOVE that I have EVER READ. ... a must read." ~ Sultry Sirens Book Blog

- Reviewed in Australia on 30 April 2018Verified PurchaseI am mortified to admit this is only the second book of Leslie McAdam’s that I have read. I fell in love with her words when I found Sol last year and this book - second book in the Love in Translation series - is just as fabulous as that one. I really need to make time to read more of Leslie’s books as her writing is fabulous and her characters are just so captivating.
“I like it when you’re with me, whether it’s in the sun or the shadow. But I’m most interested in those parts of you that you don’t show anyone else.”
Sombra - Spainish for shadow - tells the story of Gustavo “Tavo” de la Guerra, a Spanish man living and working on his family’s olive farm just outside of the city of Grenada in Spain. Having met him in Sol, we know that he’s a charmer and a great friend to Trent and Dani. Tavo’s world is turned upside down when he picks up US student Kim Brown from the airport as she has hired out a spare room in his family home while she studies at the local university and immerses herself in all things Spanish. The attraction between these two is palpable and the chemistry undeniable, but with Kim promised to another back home and Tavo meant to marry the next door neighbour’s daughter to help save his farm ... are things over between these two before they get a chance to begin??
This story had me hooked from the first page and I devoured it in less than a day. I fell in love with the romantic, sexy and charming Tavo - even more so when we discover what he likes in the bedroom 😉😍 - and his connection with Kim was so genuine and never forced that even though their growing love could come across as “insta-love”, it never feels that way. And I loved Kim and the strength she displayed as she hopped on a plane for the very first time in her life and went to another country to live for a few months. Her desire to find herself away from her loved ones was so admirable and I respected her decision so very much.
Sombra is all about being true to oneself. Being able to accept the light and the dark parts and finding someone who you can truly trust and genuinely love to share all of yourself with. This resonated really deeply with me and gave me pause to think about my own life, my own shadows and I love a book that becomes more than just a story on the page, but something that has real impact and real influence on my life. Leslie is a master of creating stories that are about more than just the romance and I love the ideas, the characters, the setting...ok EVERYTHING... that she gives us in Sombra.
A definite must read book, Sombra is one I won’t be forgetting in a hurry!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh. My. Heart!!
Verified PurchaseKim heads to Spain for a year to learn and improve her Spanish. From the moment she meets Tavo at the airport, the heat between them radiates from the pages.
This story is full of love, growth and all that goes with a burgeoning relationship. It is amazingly written as always by Leslie McAdam and is absolutely recommended as are all her books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone has a shadow, how dark is yours?
Verified PurchaseThis book is set in Spain. Even though I've never been, I feel I've just returned from an exotic adventure where I've met the locals, had a meal in a cave, danced under the stars and strolled through endless orchards stretching as far as the eye can see. I've learned to cook, slow down and appreciate the little things while I was here. I may or may not have picked up a couple "dirty words" as well.
Leslie writes with such clarity and description.
You swear at times you can not only smell what she is smelling, taste what they are eating, and go through the motions of what the characters are feeling.
"I felt this book"
You will be taken on a journey of love, lust, denial, obligation, heartache, need, tradition, trust and family.
I forced myself to slow down and savor the moments while reading Sombra.
I truly enjoyed the appearance of quite a few familiar faces while reading, it was like catching up with old friends.
Sombra hit it on all notes for me.
I was a fan of the build up and tension and what appears to be obvious but really isn't.
A sign of a great book for me is if it plays like a movie....well it did and then some.
A movie that I would watch daily just to keep me lost in the world Leslie has given a glimpse of.
Do yourself a favor and go explore the many shadows around every corner in this book. You may even be brave enough to look back at your own one day and realise it's not so scarry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sensual, somehow decadent and incredibly romantic.
Verified PurchaseI’ve read Sombra so many times, and I couldn’t express at the moment how much I loved it. I guess my words got struck, I’ve been overwhelmed and transported into this journey.
A magnificent one when the main characters explored their own desires, filled with so much sensuality, somehow decadent and incredibly romantic. The scenery place took a huge part and in way brought some intensity to their story.
What I adored the most? To fall in love not only with the characters but also with the place. And when it happens, it’s just magical. The author managed to convey emotions so beautifully and made my heart burst with happiness.
Kim has been trapped into her planned life, I had to say a bit monotonous with a very predictable relationship where no sparks, just being in her comfort zone. When she decided to take a trip far from home, to a place she’s never been, the thrill of something new and experiences to come. I enjoyed watching her discovering a new world, interesting to see what different cultures have to offer, revealing her true self, without hiding.
Tavo, passionate, caring and intense. Tall, dark and handsome, wearing his heart on his sleeve, a friendly sociable personality with his ridiculous latin charm that would melt the ladies’ hearts. Like Kim, he was missing something as well, not wanting to fail his family and being the person they expected him to be.
From a simple glance, a little touch, I felt the intensity of their connection. I’ve been transported into Kim’s life changing journey. The chemistry was off the charts, and these two knew how to put a room in fire, it felt so natural and did belong together amazingly.
Anyway, I adored reading Sombra. Such a beautiful journey, soul-searching, heartfelt and incredibly magical. Something sensual, a place with passionate people. It was not only about the place, it’s about finding the pieces you missed and make you whole.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtakingly Beautiful and Superbly Well Written!!!
Verified Purchase5+++ stars!!!
“…our love blossomed in the dark.”
“…They had a sombra. Everyone Does. But they had spent their time pretending their shadow did not exist… If you face the sun, though, you will always have a shadow. That’s the way it works. We all cast shadows behind us. Better to take a look and see what’s in there than to be scared of it…”
As an avid reader, I love a lot of authors and a vast number extent of troupes. Leslie McAdam is certainly on that list of authors’ that I one-click before I even read the blurbs… She just writes stories that speak to your heart and leave you desperately in need of a cold shower 😉 and when you read romance, that’s the perfect combination. As much as I have loved previous work by Leslie McAdam, she has really, really outdone herself with her latest book Sombra. This sexy contemporary romance is the second book in the Love in Translation series and introduces readers to Tavo and Kim. Breathtakingly beautiful, this story is stunningly written. Readers couldn’t ask for a better plot or pace for this story. You will be drawn into the story from the first page and will be so enthralled that you will be reading the last sentence before you even know it. So, I knew going into Sombra that I would love it…I just didn’t realize that Leslie McAdam would mesmerize me so much with a story that I would be left truly utterly speechless and it would actually take two days for my thoughts on her work to possibly do justice to Sombra.
In addition to the superbly well written book, readers will feel the connection between Tavo and Kim from the start of Sombra. I actually got butterflies and goosebumps much like the heroines in romances do. The chemistry between Tavo and Kim is intense and pulls you in just as surely as the excellent writing. The story is told in duel perspectives and readers will love the insights this gives into both characters. Then there is the exotic location, the story is set in: Spain where Tavo’s family has owned an olive orchard for generations. For the first time in her life, Kim travels to experience life in a foreign country as an exchange student… only she never expected to find a man who complemented everything about her and who she could not live without. Sombra is exceedingly sexy, a cold shower will be an absolute must, and I personally would advise you to have a fresh pair of panties and batteries on hand 😉. As a hero, Tavo is simply h.a.w.t!!! He’s sensitive, extremely gifted and deeply sexual. He’s torn between his family and his dreams… He really is the idyllic combination for your next book boyfriend. And Kim…Oh I loved Kim! With her desire to truly experience life and to stop living in the shadows. Her rainbow-colored hair and the passion she finds in the simplicity of life in a foreign country. There is nothing, absolutely nothing about this book that you won’t love. You will be left deeply moved and completely enthralled by Leslie McAdam’s talents as an author. And I can guarantee those of you that are new to Leslie McAdam, after reading Sombra, you will absolutely go on to binge read everything else she has written!

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved the depth & imagery
Verified PurchaseThe scenery, love for the culture and intimacy between the characters. Kim never realized her life was incomplete and that she was seeking until Spain. Tavo spent his entire life seeking but not being able to find. These characters discovered life, love and each other. Great book again the imagery was compelling. I have a new appreciation for olive oil as well.
