He’s one of the last of a powerful but vanishing bloodline …
Grigori Barinov is the eldest in an ancient line of dragon shifters and the guardian of his family’s lands and fortune. Sworn to protect their history and magic, he won’t rest until he neutralizes any threat to their existence. When he discovers an ancient manuscript that exposes his family and their dragon lineage has fallen into a mortal woman’s hands, he knows he must get the book back by any means necessary. If that means seducing a nosy American woman with an intoxicating scent, he is more than willing to carry her off to his palatial home deep in the heart of Russia.

She’s the one woman who could expose him to the world…
Madelyn Haynes has never fit in. As an adopted child she grew up in a loving home but never felt as though she belonged. Plagued by mysterious dreams she’s had of a silver scaled beast ever since she was a little girl, she is convinced dragons are real. While in Russia working on her PhD in mythology in order to escape the ridicule from fellow professors, she unexpectedly crosses paths with the sexy and dominating Grigori, and after just one night with the man whose eyes seem to burn, she starts to change inside. Isolated in the Russian wilderness Grigori calls home, Madelyn can’t help but fall under his sensual spell, yet something deep inside her calls out that she can’t trust him. She has to show the world dragons are real to salvage academic reputation, even if it means costing her the heart of the dragon she’s falling in love with.

Overall I’m rating this book 4 stars. This book was slow paced but was a quicker read than expected. I liked all the characters and their individual personalities. I loved that there was some passion between this couple. I also liked the fact the heroine was into mythology, although she wasn’t the mythology type. I loved that this book took place in Russia and it had some Russian aspects. I also loved that the author had a thunderbird in this book. It’s original and made this book better. This book had dual P.O.V.’s. I liked but not loved this read. This diffidently isn’t my favorite or even in my top 3 dragon shifter books but I enjoyed it.

descriptionExcellent cover on this one. A fantastic representation of the story. Excellent composition (although "I" would have moved the series symbol more to the right. Great use of graphics and title work as well.description

descriptionI love dragon shifters. I think they may be tied with wolves as my favorite type of shifter in a romance. Although I am also partial to lions...in any case, dragons are center stage in this one, and we have the pleasure of meeting the first of the three Barinov brothers, Grigori and his mate Madelyn. Madelyn is in Russia (seriously this author kicked it up a notch and made the dragons Russian...swoon) to write a paper on dragons. When she requests a book from the royal library, she ends up getting more than she bargained for in the form of a 6 foot 4 smokin hot businessman/dragon who kidnaps her and demands answers. Soon answers are the least of Grigori's problem when he, Madelyn, and his brother are pulled into a dragon war with another clan.

description

I enjoyed this one a lot. It was well written and well paced. The plot was engaging and kept me turning the pages. The author does an excellent job of world-building without it taking over the story completely. Weaving it with actual history was a nice touch. This is a true mate story, and so the attraction is pretty instant. Therefore there is no OW/OM drama. The heroine was a virgin, and the hero hadn't been with anyone in a long while. It was a slow burn but here are a few sex scenes. I would have liked to have seen a few more spicier scenes. This one wasn't heavy on the secondary characters. The main one being Grigori's brother Rurik. Who I enjoyed very much and can't wait to read about. I have a feeling I know who his heroine is going to be. Both main characters were extremely likable. I adored Grigori. He was sweet and sexy. I would probably label him alpha-lite. I loved Madelyn equally as much. She was sweet and strong when she needed to be. Lastly, it was all wrapped up in a sweet epilogue that gives a hint of what is coming up in the next book.description

When it comes to PNR Lauren Smith delivers every time and the opener to her Brothers of Ash and Fire series couldn't have been any more perfect.

description

Dragon shifters are one of my guilty pleasures and the eldest of the three Barinov siblings, Grigori—every gorgeous, unassuming, protective, suit-wearing inch of him—quickly became very much of a guilty pleasure. As he did for Madelyn, who visits Russia to work on her PhD and whose theory that dragons aren't simply a myth, is about to be proven right.

“What does it mean when your eyes change colors?”
“It can mean many things. Excitement, anger, but...it mainly means arousal.”

Absolutely everything in this story worked for me: the fact that this story was very much Madelyn's as Grigor's, the intimate, tender and passionate connection between them, the perfectly timed humour, the overall atmosphere and I loved how Russian history was woven into the story. But it's when the Barinov's enemies, the Drakor's, discover Grigori has found his mate and she's human that this story really kicks into action as the tension levels begin to soar.

“All that matters is that I found you. After nearly two thousand years of being alone, I found you.”

These men have already stolen my heart and with youngest brother, Rurik bringing my kind of humour and Mikhail leaving me intrigued having being exiled by their father and away from his brothers for 200 years, I absolutely can't wait to get my hands on the rest of this series.

AUTHOR NOTE: Yes there are virgins! So a few people have pointed out they don't like the heroine being a virgin..well I played off dragon mythology quite a bit and they were always after maidens in the tales. Maidens of course is old speak for virgins lol. So yes, this trilogy has virgin heroines. If you don't like stories about virgins, please don't read on...LOL. And if you don't like insta-lust..this series isn't for you either. And I don't write bombsell perfect heroines either, so if you want heroines who are classically pretty supermodels...again, this series isn't for you.

Writing a dragonshifter romance was something completely different for me! And I admit it was challenging but completely rewarding!
Grigori was a a blast. I got to write this sexy, brooding hero and just really delve into dragon mythology. I researched how dragons loved jewels, hid in caves and were attracted to maidens which I made into "virgins" for my series.
I also wanted to give readers a lush setting and chose moscow as the backdrop for my dragons. While there was a grit to the city itself, I wanted to show the former, decayed and crumbling opulence of the Romanov empire as well even in just small ways. I wanted readers to get a glimpse of the past and history, while also experiencing a powerful love story!
For the heroine, Madelyn, I wanted there to be a part of a mystery to her, and I wanted her to have to learn to be brave when before she's been very frightened of living (with good reason once you learn of her secret past). For her the challenge wasn't just loving Grigori, but accepting herself and who she really is inside, which is something we, even as readers must do in our own lives.

I hope you enjoy the series and look forward to the next two books: Mikail and Rurik!

~Cheers,
Lauren

3.5 ~ You had me at dragon…~ Stars
Madelyn Haynes travels to Russia in a last ditch effort to find proof that dragons did once exist. Its that or she’ll have to kiss her teaching job goodbye. Ever since she was a child, Madelyn has been fascinated by the myths and legends that speak of dragons and she’s determined to follow any lead that can prove her right.

But when she browses a particular book, Madelyn rouses the curiosity of the Grigori Barinov and soon finds herself captive to a living breathing dragon of her own.

Grigori is the oldest Barinov and one of the last three Barinov dragons. He takes his responsibility to his family very seriously and finding Madelyn taking a special interest in the only book in existence that can reveal the secrets of their linage is too dangerous to risk. The more time he spends with Madelyn, the more drawn to her.

When a threat from another dragon family puts them in danger, Madelyn and Grigori find it easy to unite against a common enemy but also open their hearts to the possibility of true mates.

What I liked:
I loved the history of dragons that the author creates. The facts and magic elements that are woven into the story but also within the characters themselves will make this series stand out. I liked Grigori and Madelyn as the MCs and Mikail and Rurik are interesting secondary characters. The surprise truth behind the dreams and visions that Madelyn experiences was a bit easy to guess at the reason why but it was still a revelation how she would handle the truth of her own history.

I liked that this story was low on angst and didn’t create unnecessary drama between the MCs. It was surprisingly free of even the most minor case of push/pull. The chemistry was hot and the dragon action was pretty awesome!

What I didn't like:
There was one small fact that seemed to rub me the wrong way and that was the idea that a dragon’s mate and a virgin would have equal pull on a dragon to claim her.

If there was one thing besides a true mate that a dragon couldn’t deny himself, it was a virgin.

Which kept me asking if Grigori and Madelyn were in the same room with another virgin, would Grigori have been conflicted as to who he was more drawn too? Would their story have ended differently if Madelyn wasn’t a virgin? I’ve read plenty of shifter stories and mates are usually some way somehow made special and stand apart for his/her partner. I think the “equally strong” pull of a true mate and a virgin thing, would not have bothered me as much if from the get-go Grigori would have mentioned that Madelyn stood apart for him (aka more so than just because she was a virgin). In the end he falls in love with her and vice versa so it all works out but I wanted him to recognize right away that she was special. He was kind of slow on the uptake.

Favorite Lines:
“Evil men are never haunted by their dark deeds. It is those who tried to help who live with the ghosts.”

“I choose not to be a creature destined to destroy or be destroyed.”

“It doesn’t matter what you are. You are mine and I am yours. The fates brought us together for purpose, Madelyn, and I will not forsake you. You are the greatest gift in my life.”

“The Universe designed you among the stars and let you fall into my arms.”

Memorable Moments:
When Grigori makes it snow for Madelyn. That was sweet but also whimsical and romantic.

And for such a serious man, Grigori is a poet at heart. I loved how lyrical he was when it came to Madelyn and what she came to mean to him.

5 - Here there be dragons... Stars!

Lauren Smith turns her already talented hand to Dragon-Shifters with the first book in her new Brothers of Ash and Fire series introducing us to the Barinov brothers, with Grigori up first.

It’s no secret that I am a fan of this author, her Historical titles are like Catnip to me, but dragons… well she has pretty much written a series that sits front and center proudly on my reading Nirvana shelf.

"I always knew a love of reading was a good thing."

Madelyn and Grigori’s story, was as easy to slip into as a warm fragrant bath, the heat levels between them grew as they got to know each other better, and I really liked that Madelyn had her own secrets to tell as the book developed, just as much as Grigori did.

"People always fear what they do not understand…"

Having had a fascination with Dragon’s her whole life, finding out that Grigori can shift into one and then learning all about his families history is like a dream come true for her, especially when the sexy-shifter makes it very clear that she is the only woman for him. But the Barinov Family have enemies, and discovering that Grigori has found his mate, brings them out of the shadows looking to take advantage of his distracted state.

Mate a mortal… It was a terrible idea.

Grigori was a quick read, I loved that the author actually wove true Russian history into the Barinov's past, it was done really skillfully and although fiction made me sit there and think,'that could have happened', and it hit all the right notes with me. You are also introduced to Rurik Barinov and I loved his dry wit and sarcastic humor. You are also given a small glimpse of exiled brother Mikhail, whose book is up next, Lauren has set the scene well, given the reader an epic love story to open it up, and I am looking forward to seeing the direction she takes in the future books.

"You dragons do like to hold onto things don’t you?"

Not long to wait, as Mikhail is due early 2018, and I cannot wait!

4 Dragon Shifter Book Stars

Don’t knock it until you try it. Yes, I like shifter books. I’ve read aliens, wolves, panthers and even a buck (that’s a thing) and I love a good Dragon one too.

It’s really no different from wolves to be honest, just a touch of something else and that’s good.
I took a chance on this author and it’s mainly because I liked the cover. It’s a bit shallow, but it really does a lot for a book and I think (a tiny part of me) made me like the book a little more.

Madelyn is a boring person. She’s in Russia researching for her paper. What is she researching? Well, dragons of course. Her theory is to prove that dragons once existed.

The beginning of the book is a little slow paced, but it sets up the tone of the characters. We get a feel to who Madelyn is and the author does a great job in character buildup.

Grigori is a dragon. Shocker! He’s rich, successful and powerful. He thinks Madelyn is coming in too close to his dragon world and what does he do? Well he kidnaps her course and don’t you love a good kidnapping book?
The chemistry between Madelyn and Grigori is a bit forced and I wished it was a little more organic, but after the first rush of lust, they start to get to know each other. And eventually it’s explained why the feelings are so heightened.

Parts of the book can be a little repetitive, but it helps you not get lost. Like any other fantasy book, there’s a lot of world building. The thing I enjoyed most about this book was the world building. It was interesting to read the rules, the history and what makes a dragon a dragon. It never seemed too far out of reach (you know when the author writes a solution for the purpose to only having a solution).

There are two clans of dragons in this world and they hate each other. Think of mafia book with two rival enemies. Grigori’s job is to protect his family and figure out his feelings towards Madelyn.

Overall, this book was decent, easy to read and I read it in one sitting. I like trying new authors and I’m happy to move forward with the series.

I love paranormal romances, and when you add an alpha dragon who is almost 3,000 years old well I was hooked on this giant lizard who not only breathes fire, but ice!
And what does a dragon want the most except lovely shiny jewels, but a lovey sweet smelling virgin.
This is the first book in this series and I did enjoy it.The heroine is a history professor who goes to Russia to research a paper on dragons, and the hero is a real life dragon. One whiff of the heroine and he had to have her,and had her he did.It also turns out that the heroine's bloodline is natural mortal enemies with the hero's .But all is well and they get their HEA, but not before a great battle in which the heroine saves her dragon from his enemy. There is also a future half breed dragon/thunderbird for our happy couple. On to the next book with the exiled dragon brother.

You had me at dragon shifters!

Madelyn Haynes has been haunted by dreams of a silver dragon. Of course, she would be drawn to the topic if you’ve had visions of them ever since you were a child. Now working on her Ph.D. in mythology, Madelyn goes to a Russian library that supposedly holds a diary of a man who met dragons. When she requests access to the book all kinds of protocols are set in motion putting her on Grigori’s radar.

Grigori is an ancient in a line of dragon shifters. He swoops in thinking to eliminate a threat to their secret only to find a fiery maiden who will do anything to prove her visions are real…but at what cost?

Heated from their first encounter, Grigori is slow building but then the fiercest passions burn long and hard. A great start to a new series, Grigori was a great start to what I’m sure will be a strong series from Smith.

I received this ARC copy of Grigori from St. Martin's Press. This is my honest and voluntary review. Grigori is set for publication October 3, 2017.

Dragon shifter romance just happens to be one of my favourites. I liked this but I’m sad to say I didn’t love it. I enjoy the world that the author has created. This book takes place in Russia with hot Russian dragons. And how scrumptious they are.

The brothers Grigori, Rurik and Mikhail are the last of the Barinovs.

Book one is Grigori’s book, multi-millionaire and one of the oldest dragons. He is somewhat sentimental when it comes to Barrow’s journal that documents what they are which is kept at the Russian State Library. But one day an American requests the book and learns all the dragon secrets in it although she doesn’t believe what she is reading.

Madelyn Haynes has travelled to Russia to find out more about dragons as she has always been fascinated by them. She has also felt as if she never belonged but once she meets Grigori that all changes and her own secrets and past come to light. Madelyn is truly magnificent. She is quiet with an inner strength.

There is instalust and love but as they are mates and paranormal romance it works. But the chemistry between them is somewhat flat for me. I’m sure others will see it differently. Different strokes and all that.

The Barinovs and the Drakors have been rivals for a very long time. The Romanovs have been wiped out. The treaty has been broken and now an all-out war is on the horizon.

The plot is very similar to other dragon books that I have read before that is why it only gets three stars and I felt it to be somewhat predictable. I also felt as if it is too slow paced.

Nevertheless it is still a cute, sexy and somewhat cheesy read. I will be reading Mikhail’s book as I am intrigued by him. The exiled loner.

Book Review For: Grigori Lauren Smith 'Grigori' by Lauren Smith is the First Book in a New Series called "Brothers of Ash and Fire". This is the story of Grigori Barinov and Madelyn Haynes. Oh man, I love a Dragon shifter story! And Grigori fits the bill perfectly! Steeped in mythology, Lauren Smith sets up a magical world where beliefs are challenged and reality is questioned.

Madelyn Haynes is out to prove once and for all that dragons are real. That they really exist and are not just mythological beings. Caught up in an epic battle to keep the dragon species hidden from discovery, Madelyn is in serious danger when she uncovers an ancient manuscript that details the dragons and their history. But when Grigori Barinov swoops in to eliminate the threat of exposure, he cannot deny the lure of Madelyn’s scent and he will do anything to keep the manuscript from landing in the wrong hands. Even if it means taking one for the team and seducing the beautiful, enticing Madelyn.

Wow. Talk about an amazing set up to a new series. I loved how strong Madelyn was in trying to prove her theories were true. Loved her sass and her smarts. And Grigori. Jeez, tall, dark, handsome, smart, and growly. Just how I like ‘em! Their interactions were smart, fun, sexy AF. And I loved how they both found a home with each other—that they truly belonged somewhere and to someone.

I can’t wait for more in this series! ~ Missy, 4.5 stars

******

Anyone who knows me knows that Dragon PNR is my jam. I absolutely loved Lauren Smith's Grigori. It was romantic, sexy and set the scene with detailed building for a new and exciting series. Grigori was so strong and powerful yet sweet and passionate about Madelyn. I could not get enough of them both!

When Madelyn Haynes discovers an old and mysterious manuscript about the existence of dragons and their history she hopes it will prove her theory that dragons existed in the past. But Grigori Barinov, Dragon Shifter and Barinov family patriarch is now on the prowl to eliminate this journal as he fears the secrets about the existence of dragons will now be revealed. But this puts him on a collision course with Madelyn as he needs to find out how much she knows about Dragons and his family. But after one sniff of her scent, he needed to have her and make her his own. What follows is an adventure full.of sass, adventure, steam and heartfelt emotion!

All in all I really enjoyed this title. It was smart, sexy and filled with alpha growly goodness. I would like to thank Netgalley and SMP for an advanced copy of this book for an honest review. Bravo! 4 stars! ~Ratula

As the oldest in the Barinov family line, Gregori carries a heavier burden than his brothers Rurik and Makhail. After Rurik kills Ruslan, Gregori, as the oldest, must agree to a challenge by Dimitri, Ruslan’s father. Dimitri gives him two weeks to prepare for the fight. While this may seem generous, Dimitri has ulterior motives.

This was paced well and kept me intrigued. I was engaged right from the beginning with Madelyn. The lengths she was going to to try and prove that dragons used to exist. Her years of dreaming about them, her background with her parents deaths and how she was naturally paranoid about her surroundings. This had me trying to figure out if they played a part into the overall story.

I liked how true mates were identified in this story and the twist the author threw in there about our main couple. It was unique and I look forward to more in the series. ARC provided by NetGalley.

“All that matters is that I found you. After nearly two thousand years of being alone, I found you.”

After coming off an intense and angsty read, we were in the mood for a story to lose ourselves in, a chance to suspend reality for a moment in time and Grigori, the first book in the Brothers of Ash and Fire by Lauren Smith, a new to us author, provided exactly that! We were captivated by this book! We love our PNR and easily devoured this read. We’ve read all kinds of PNR books but have to say, a Dragon Shifter is a first for us, and well, after witnessing those spectacular dragons on Game of Thrones, we were pretty excited to see what this was all about!

“Here there be dragons,” he echoed in a husky whisper.”

The series explores the Russian Barinov Brothers; Mikhail, Rurik and Grigori, the last three in a line of centuries old, Barinov dragon shifters. Grigori Barinov is the first brother we meet and his story sets up the series (which we’re dying for more of) perfectly. We were immediately drawn into Grigori and Madelyn’s fierce and fast romance. Yes, things do move very quickly for these two but the author does a splendid job of creating her world and providing reasoning for the intense and rapid feelings experienced between Grigori and Madelyn. There’s a familiarity between them that is later explored and explained.

‘The little human was bringing out old instincts in him, ones he thought he’d mastered long ago.’

Madelyn Haynes, a professor of medieval mythology, has been reading and researching dragons for years. Her studies take her to Russia on a fact finding mission to uncover the mythology of the dragons that have consumed her thoughts. Convinced they’re real, she uncovers a manuscript detailing the brothers Barinov and soon she meets two of the Barinov brothers first hand, confirming her beliefs.

‘He may have worn an expensive suit and looked like an Armani model, but he acted like an ancient warrior – one who took what he wanted. God help her, she liked it.’

Grigori has gone to great lengths to ensure his family secrets do not become public knowledge so when word hits him that a woman from America is seeking information, he acts quickly to find out more about this nosy American woman and veer her off their trail. What he didn’t count on was the fact that he may have just found his mate, the woman he has been searching for his whole life. But, Madelyn is human, he’s a dragon shifter – he’s immortal and couldn’t bear the thought of outliving Madelyn. After all, dragons are so connected to their mates, they grieve so deeply and don’t live much past the passing of their one true love, so Grigori must tread carefully.

‘Holding her like this felt right, natural, just like it felt to fly. In that moment he wanted to share himself with her, open his heart to her.'

Of course, the heart rules the head in this case with Grigori providing so much of what we love about paranormal escapism. The one true mate, the intense attraction and chemistry, the alpha possessive male, the woman who his heart beats for; and let’s not forget the epic battles, the threats and problems that plague them. It all went into making this a fabulously entertaining read.

“It doesn’t matter what you are. You are mine and I am yours. The fates brought us together for a purpose and I will not forsake you.”

For us, this gave off a Twilight meets Game of Thrones vibe – oh don’t worry, it’s very tame (not murder GOT), but the dragons were very reminiscent of the series and their history the author provided was fascinating! If this first book is anything to go by, we’ve just found ourselves a new PNR series to fawn over and you can bet we’ll diving straight into Mikhail’s books when it releases in January. Oh, won’t his be a tale to tell! There was so much mystery surrounding this man who had lived a lot of his life in exile. If, like us, you love the mystery, history and romance of these types of stories, you can bet you’re gonna love Grigori!

“What I promise you is a vow of love and loyalty. A vow to never leave you. Mates become one beating heart, one infinite soul.”

Gregori is book one in an all new dragon shifter series by Lauren Smith. With the exception of a few series, I haven’t read much paranormal over the past few years; I just seemed to burn myself out on it. Color me surprised when Gregori’s description intrigued me, I couldn’t resist the lure of a sexy Russian dragon shifter!

Madelyn Haynes has always been intrigued by dragons, she’s a professor researching more on dragons in Russia when she finds a journal that just may back up her belief that dragons are real. As the oldest son in his family it’s up to Grigori to protect his family and the dragon race. When Grigori finds out Madelyn has stumbled upon a journal that will expose the dragon race and his family’s secrets he knows has to find Madelyn and stop her. What he didn’t count on is finding what he’s been searching for, his mate.

Grigori was slow at times but interesting enough to keep me turning the pages. Grigori and Madelyn are drawn together by insta lust that grows into a love to last a lifetime, which is totally acceptable in shifter romance. Grigori is an uber sexy ALPHA male and Madelyn is a feisty, smart heroine.

With secrets, sexy dragons, passion and love, Grigori is a great start to a sexy new dragon shifter series!

I cannot wait for his brothers stories and to see how the fate of the dragon shifters plays out.

Enjoyed this true mate story. Both Grigori and Madeline were fun MCs and I liked the resolution of the small angst over their future.

It’s been a long time since I’ve read a good supernatural book and I loved every second of this one!

This is the second book I’ve read about Dragon shifters and I have to say it feels like something out of a fairy tale.

The way in which the author describes these majestic creatures made me want to be there just to touch their multicolored skin. And thinking they are actually people made them even more fascinating, since I could picture their different personality traits showing in their animal form.

Madelyn was a sweet girl that seemed lost, she didn’t know exactly what fascinated her about Grigori’s picture but she couldn’t stop herself from wanting a second look. Little did she know, she will get much more than that when she gets caught up in a Shifter war.

Their connection was instant and I loved the animalistic aspect of it. Grigori’s reaction to her smell was something else; there was no way he was going to let her go after having a taste.

The love at first sight kind of thing didn’t bother me at all, because the author made us believe that there was so much more than just physical attraction and good sex; their souls knew each other on a deep level and it was destiny that brought her into his arms.

A true timeless love story! I can’t wait for the next book.

Grigori is the first book in Lauren Smith's Brothers of Ash and Fire series. It was my first time reading this author, and I was pleasantly surprised. This series follows three brothers who are centuries old... dragon shifters!!! Woo Hoo! You know how I feel about dragons.

The hero of this first installment is, you guessed it, Grigori! He is the eldest Barinov brother, the one who takes all the responsibility on his shoulders. Doing what was best for his family was not always the easiest choice for Grigori, especially when rival dragons liked to stick their nose in his territory and rile things up. I liked Grigori, I felt like he was a "still waters run deep" kind of guy. He didn't get overly excited, but you could tell that he felt things on a deeper level and wasn't as stoic as his outward demeanor always suggested.

Our heroine is Madelyn Haynes, an academic sort who has always been obsessed with the myth of dragons. She never would have expected that her research would have placed her squarely in the clutches of real life dragon shifters. I liked that Madelyn took things in stride and didn't have over-the-top freak out moments. Things were also happening below the surface with Madelyn, but you should discover that secret for yourself. I absolutely loved this aspect of the story.

This is a fated mates story, so our couple is instantly drawn to one another. Grigori seemed more invested than Madelyn initially, but she had a lot to deal with given that she had no idea dragons existed. I liked the progression of their relationship and felt like it unfolded at a good pace within the confines of the story.

There is a secondary suspense storyline involving the rival dragon clan that was well-integrated and gave an alternate focus to help advance the plot alongside the romance. I think the final conflict could have been drawn out longer as it seemed a tad anti-climactic.

The narrator did a fabulous job. She did great Russian accents for our dragons, and had no problem affecting both female and male characters. I will definitely look for more of her narrations in the future.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this audiobook that I received from the publisher, Tantor Audio.

Great start to this new series! Dragon shifters are unique in and of themselves. I love it when we can get a new, fresh look at them. This is my first time reading this author. Although I thought the story rushed in some spots, for the most part it held my interest beginning to end.

This is Grigori's book. He is the eldest brother and thus patriarch of the family. All of his clan are gone except for his two brothers. In steps Madelyn, trying to prove or disprove once and for all the myth of the dragon. What follows is both eye opening and frightening.

This book brings us not only the mate attraction, but also some history, some action adventure and of course at least two super hot and gorgeous Dragons! I first thought to roll my eyes at the virgin "sacrifice" comments. Once the story unfolds and we find out all of Madelyn's secrets, it makes more sense. She is the right person in the right place to become Grigori's mate. What power and courage she has shown! Great match for him!

The best part....this is just book 1! Can't wait to meet the younger brothers in more detail. Looking forward to more from this author.

DNF Chapter 3.
Couldn't get past the fact that a 3000 year old dragon shifter would leave a book with his secrets (nobody should've read this book) in a public library for all to read. And then he's surprised when somenone actually requests it for reading.
And then there was this weird "I smell a virgin, I need her now" thing that was a total turn off for me.

I'll be honest. I've read this author before. I've read both her historical and contemporary novels. So imagine my surprise when this PNR came across my lap. To say I was shocked is an understatement. Why? Because I'm a true PNR lover and I couldn't wait to get my hands on this one!

Madelyn Haynes is a professor. She's obsessed with history, but Dragons have always been a personal interest of hers. She dreams about them and can't stop thinking that she needs to know more. So she's in Russia, researching Dragon's origin, when she comes across a book. But this isn't just any book, its a journal. A detailed journal written by a man who claims strange things. Things that shouldn't be viewed upon being real. So why does it feel so...familiar?

Grigori Barinov is a Dragon shifter. He's been alive for thousands of years, protecting his family and treasures. Now it looks like a mistake hundreds of years ago could jeopardize not only his family, but the entire Dragon race. He must find Madelyn to see what her true intentions are. But he gets more than he bargains for. He gets what he's been waiting for his entire life...his mate.

This was such a good introduction to the series. I love me some Dragons and this doesn't disappoint. We are taken on a journey through Russia and Russian history, learning of Dragon shifters as well as other creatures. The way this story unfolds is beautiful. And the way Grigori and Madelyn come to be mates is captivating. Characters have been established and enemies have shown their hand. Now that these two have found each other, I can't wait to see what the rest of this series will bring. Especially considering they now have some work to do. After all, Dragon's love them some jewels.

*I received this book from the Jeep Diva in exchange for my honest opinion.

There be dragons!

Ahhh dragons. I am rooted in common sense in every aspect of life but I can’t help losing myself in a good paranormal romance. There is whimsy, chivalry and (if I’m lucky) bad boys taken to a whole new level. Or scale. And Grigori fits that bill in every way…
Grigori is a man and a dragon with traits from both that make him the strong, loyal defender he is. When Madelyn stumbles into his life this seeming accident of fate quickly becomes anything but. Family secrets are the key to their story and the unraveling of events moves their romance along with danger and heart at the center….

“Dragons are real…”

And oh how I wish that were true! Grigori and his family are protectors who have been around for centuries, their friends list is a who’s who of historical figures. I lost myself in the past and the present as Madelyn and Grigori made dragons extraordinary yet so possible.

“When you kiss me, I don’t need wings.”

And not just any dragons but fierce, loyal, loving ones that are anything but scary. Well, except to their enemies of course. Get ready for battles, intrigue and a love story that is out of this world! I can’t wait to read more about these anything but ordinary brothers. ~Diane, 4 stars

I went into this book blind except for the fact that it was recommended by the ladies from Read Me Romance and I am so happy that I did. I knew that this was going to be a dragon shifter story but what I was surprised by was how much historical information that was included into the story. I was so here for the ride of Madeline and Grigori. Madeline is a history professor studying dragons in Russia. Grigori is one of the last dragons of one of the powerful dragon families in Russia. When Madeline checks out a special book from a Russian library, Grigori is notified and so the adventure and fated mates story begins. This story is engaging and interesting, sexy and swoon-worthy, and adds just this perfect amount of suspense that keeps you hanging on every word. I really liked the narrator's voice since I listened to it as an audiobook; she performed a very pleasing Russian accent for Grigori and an American accent for Madeline. I look forward to continue this series.

WOW! Lauren Smith has been my go to author for Historical Romances for a while now and this is her venture into paranormal romance and I have to say that she did a terrific job with it. I loved all the detail she put into her story because it made it easier to visualize everything, just as she does with her historical romances her words pulls you into the world that she had envisioned for you and you become the fly on the wall watching everything happening around you.

Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy:

GRIGORI is a modern fairy tale set in Russia, in deep dark libraries, high rise condos, and sprawling estates in the forests. It stars fun new mythology and just enough tropes to be fun.

Madelyn is a university professor on sabbatical, researching dragon mythology in Russia, when she stumbles on a secret and gets kidnapped by the very rich, very imposing Grigori. She does go through a period of helplessness which was a bit annoying, but she grows so much as a character throughout the book that I was rooting for her the whole way. I also enjoyed how she was able to find her inner strength without sacrificing who she is. She isn’t a super-hero, she’s a researcher; she became brave, but I never felt like she had become another character altogether.

There is one simple plot hole that brought down this book’s rating for me and left me wondering how this could have gotten past the first draft. The “ancient manuscript” that Madelyn finds is a journal at the library that Grigori put there years ago. He couldn’t bear to destroy his friends’ journal even though it exposed all his secrets. Has this guy not heard of safety deposit boxes? It was too easy to find this book, and it felt like it was plugged in there to speed up the plot.

Although I was annoyed at this weird event, I still enjoyed this book and will definitely pick up the next volume. There are two more brothers and I can’t wait to read their stories. GRIGORI does a good job of starting the Brothers of Ash and Fire series. It has a satisfying ending that still leaves lots of room to grow plot-wise for the next two books. It has characters that, although they fit into the paranormal romance tropes, are able to make the crazy occurrences believable.
