"In the bible, there is a verse from the book of Job about God giving and God taking away. This echoed for me in Rowe's Shattered The story of a woman betrayed who finally finds love, only to have it taken away at great cost. Still grieving. Still trying to find her balance, she is given one small miracle that changes the trajectory of her life". Sharon Sala - author of Heartbeat. March 2024 In the heart of Manhattan, Kate Alden appears to have it the owner of a top publishing house, a circle of supportive friends, and a life filled with upscale events. But beneath the facade of her high-society life lies a turbulent past, threatening to shatter the walls she's carefully built around her darkest memories.
When an innocent moment triggers a haunting memory from her childhood, Kate's carefully compartmentalized world begins to crumble. Torn between the shadows of her past and the promise of a future, she finds herself navigating a maze of emotions, relationships, and unexpected alliances. Amidst her struggles, Kate must decide whether to continue hiding behind the walls she's constructed or to confront her fears and start the journey toward healing.
C. Deanne Rowe, author of heartwarming fiction about life, love, and everything in between, was born and raised in southwest Oklahoma. She has also lived in Nebraska, Texas, and California. Iowa has been her home for over thirty years where she lives with her husband, two children and their spouses, five grandchildren, the memory of her hero teacup toy poodle, Allie, and her rescued Frenchie, Kendell.
3.5stars Kate’s childhood was really rough and it affected her outlook on people and life as she got older. It didn’t help that there were other forces in play that solidified her beliefs and kept her from really embracing life and people. She did find a measure of brightness that helped her move on.
Kate had tumultuous childhood, suffered loss as an adult and basically closed herself off. A chance meeting will give her the option to open up and let life in or stay on the same closed off path. This is a story of love, loss, grief, finding yourself and learning to love yourself. While there is romance in it, I did not think it was a "romance" book. It was well written and really drew me in.
This story was primary about love, but there was much more to it than just romance, and I did feel a cocktail of emotions while reading this.
On first impressions, while I appreciated the author's efforts to bring the characters and the story to life, I didn't feel very connected to the characters. Some of them had qualities that I could relate to or identify with, particularly Kate, but when I first started reading, I felt that something about the characters was and the story was a little too good to be true, not quite believable.
As I continued reading, I began to find myself connecting a little bit more with the characters and their experiences, wondering what I might do in their place. However, it seemed that just as I was beginning to feel a connection with the characters, events in the story took an unexpected turn that left me tearful.
It began to feel like an intense read after that, but the writing itself was beautiful, and by this point, I cared about what happened to the characters, and was determined to see them through to the end.
This wasn't just a story about romance, I think it speaks to the importance of family relationships, and to the fact that we can sometimes find the greatest strength within ourselves. Surrogacy is also a present theme in the story, so that felt almost like going on a journey with the character involved.
I felt this book took me on an emotional journey, and if you like a tearjerker, this may be your type of book.
