Shouldn't Have You (Fractured Connections Book 2) Kindle Edition
I've been many things in my life: daughter, friend, student, lover, wife…and now, widow.
Getting past those labels and finding who I could be without them was the hardest thing I've ever done.
Then I became friends with Brendon Connolly.
Every time I look at him, I see a past, I see a present, and I’m afraid if I look too hard, I’ll see a future.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2021This is a sweet second-chance romance between two old friends with a unique connection. Harmony and Brendon were friends growing up. He was best friends with her beloved husband, who was killed in a tragic accident, leaving Harmony widowed at the age of twenty five. Brendon witnessed his friend’s death and lives daily with the acute loss. Harmony was devastated and seeing one another hurt so they fell out of touch intentionally despite their longtime friendship.
The recent death of another close friend reunited their group of childhood friends as adults so the two have reconnected. Not a day goes by that Harmony doesn’t grieve Moyer, but she has to keep living so she forces herself to begin dating again. Each date is worse than the last but she soon realizes Brendon is the friend she rehashes these horror-stories with, not her girlfriends. They truly have a special bond but she can’t even consider being more than friends with him because it seems so wrong.
Brendon already had a lot of scars from his nightmare childhood and watching his friend die was a trauma that’s magnified in the face of his PTSD and OCD. He lives with a heavy burden and Harmony is the best thing in his life but even the thought of being closer to her fills him with self-loathing. This is his best friend’s wife, after all. The best friend he might have saved if he’d been paying attention. Brendon’s guilt is so strong that it nearly paralyzes him.
This is a slow-burn romance with a HEA thankfully, because it’s a sad story. There’s less action and more internal dialogue from the main characters than most but it works. The author really brings them to life and lets us feel their emotions in many ways. I was pleasantly surprised since I worried at first this book was a real downer but I enjoyed it very much. This was my first book from Carrie Ann Ryan but I’ll definitely check out more of her catalogue.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2019I loved this continuation of this series!! The struggle of letting go of the past to make a better future for the main characters. They really pull at your heart strings. You want to help them and just support them!! I can't wait for more!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2019I automatically pre-order and one click Carrie Ann Ryan. Her books are always entertaining with great character development and wonderful families. She writes about people that you'd like to have a beer with. With that said... Shouldn't Have You is epic. It's Carrie Ann's ode to angst, heartbreak, reality and love. This one is different, folks. She deals with two different sets of demons with such honesty that I believe only someone who has experienced it could write about it with such unwavering truth.
Brendon is the oldest of the Connolly brothers. The brother I would guess suffered the most from his life before Jack and Rose. I can only presume that a lot more than physical abuse was heaped upon his boy shoulders. As an adult he is still suffering with anxiety issues, insecurity, loneliness, OCD and perhaps some PTSD. Add to that the fact that he witnessed his best friends death and you have a guilt laden mess of a wonderful man.
The death of Brendon's friend, Moyer, leaves Harmony a widow in her twenties. As gentle and loving as Carrie Ann is with all of the baggage Brendon carries, the poetry of her words regarding Harmony's life after death is brilliant. Carrie Ann doesn't shy away from the ugly things that are felt and experienced.
As much as Harmony hated the word "strong", she is. But she is broken in ways that will never be repaired.
Brendon and Harmony have been friends since childhood, so they are wrapped in each other’s yesterdays. Brendon's friendship with both Moyer and Harmony means he is also in Harmony's todays. If they can both accept the help and the love that their friends and family have extended to them; if they can accept each other’s strength AND frailties; if they can work their way through the guilt that festers in both of them they will realize that they are both stronger together and that second chances are always possible and that they can both be each other’s tomorrows.
Ms. Ryan has woven a beautiful tapestry of pain surrounded with heart. Her words are like little snippets of diary entries. Deep and painful while at the same time hopeful.
Cover yourself with Ms. Ryan's tapestry as you read her diary and prepare to fall in love with her and her words all over again.
Bravo, Ms. Ryan.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2021The Dedication in this book is heartfelt and gives the reader insight into the author's life, separate from/related to the story. For that reason, I wish I could give it 5-stars. My honest assessment, though, is that this is a book that serves a purpose for the author and provides a somewhat unique story to the reader. For me, there's way too much internal discussion and a lot of slow parts. It's a story of growth or evolution and those don't come quickly but they play out slooooowly over time.
I appreciate the journey and the happy ending but the pace was too slow for me and the very realistic subject was not one for a "light" read. That said, it's enjoyable if your head is in the right space. Btw, I loved the first book and I just bought the third.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slow burn
Loved this book it was deep .Brendon and Harmony both had pasts , both sadness but in different ways. Brendon was treated appallingly in his childhood by his father who should have protected him. Harmony lost her husband who was also a co-worker and friend to Brendon. While Harmony tried to navigate her way through dating Brendon was there to support and listen to her. These two had always been friends could they be something more. Love this author

4.0 out of 5 stars Connections with layers😁
Harmony is coming to grips with her new reality, two years after her husband dies. She is putting herself out there to try dating again and to get into a new routine.
Brendon is literally a mess of emotions and still suffering with nightmares and guilt over not being able to save his friend and also about his past, and now he is feeling guilt because he can’t stop thinking about Harmony and the possible feelings he has for her❣️ And now the one person he never wanted to see again, shows up at the worst time.
This story was quite enlightening as it focuses on how Harmony is trying to move on, two years from her husband’s untimely death but also how the one person who is there for her throughout is the one she turns to when things get tough. Something else which I can see is hard is when friends decide to become more and worry that their decision will affect the group of friends they both have but also their relationship and if things don’t work out. I love these Connelly brothers and Dillon is certainly making a statement and his stamp on each of these new fractured connections that are being made😍

4.0 out of 5 stars Both of them deserve a second chance.
Harmony's husband is killed in an accident a few years ago and things have been rough, it's hard to know what to do and how to pick up the pieces your life has been left in.
Brendon had a rough start in life, even though he landed in a loving adoptive home he's always waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Harmony and Brendon have a relationship built on friendship, things progress at a nice pace, nothing feels forced. I love the way everything came together, it felt organic and respectful of the losses both had to deal with so far in life. I felt that the author did a great job of showing readers how there are different types of grief just as there are different ways of dealing with loss.
