The cynical divorce lawyer and the hearts-and-flowers wedding planner could be the perfect match . . .

If you ever get married, remember my name: Max Henderson. In my line of work, you acquire a certain perspective on supposedly everlasting unions . . .
  1. Pre-nups are your friend.
  2. The person you married is not the person you’re divorcing.
  3. And I hope you didn’t spend much on the wedding because that was one helluva waste of hard-earned cash, wasn’t it?

But some guys are willing to take a chance. Like my brother, who thinks he’s going to ride off into the sunset with the woman of his dreams in a haze of glitter on unicorns. And the wedding planner—the green-eyed beauty who makes a living convincing suckers to shell out thousands of dollars on centerpieces—is raking it in on this matrimonial monstrosity.

The thing is, Charlie Love is not
unlike me. We’re both cogs in the wedding-industrial complex. As the best man, I know her game—and I can play it better than her. But after one scorching, unexpected kiss, I think . . .

I might just want to get played.

Such a good read
5 out of 5 stars
Such a good read
This book made me all kinds of happy. Here’s the plot on a simple level: Max Henderson is a divorce attorney and a player who is still recovering from a broken engagement—even though he would say otherwise. His brother, James, breaks the news that he and his girlfriend, Gina, are getting married and that they’ve hired a wedding player. This is too much for cynical Max to take; there’s no way their marriage will last and also, who would want to spend that much money on one day? Gorgeous wedding planner Charlie Love has heard it all before. But besides loving her job, she believes that what she does—creating beautiful experiences that kick-start couples’ lives together—actually matters. On a personal level, after almost losing her father to a heart attack she’s looking for the one, but she’s dealing with her own issues here: namely a past that some might find unpalatable. Meader has pointed out that this book is a departure for her, and she’s right. Sure, Down with Love has all the good things we’ve come to associate with Meader and her style: an explosive romance, a fantastic dynamic between family members, and a book filled with strong women. But here, those trademark qualities are amplified and we get even more. The book is wildly funny; both main characters have the gift of snark. Told from both Max and Charlie’s points of view, the book has a strong sense of voice, and Max, in particular, plays to the crowd. And the romance between them is big, sexy, and beautiful: you see the weaknesses of both characters and the fact that they’re not a turn-off for each other makes them not a turn-off for the reader. I loved Charlie’s vulnerability and Max’s tenderness. After all, what’s swoonier (is that a word?) than a partner who accepts all of you? Nothing. Okay, maybe a partner who accepts all of you and who is also nicely muscled and has a keen intellect. And a good sense of humor. Down with Love is one of those books that’s going to stay with me for a good, long while, and I’m pretty happy about it. I received an ARC of this book through Netgalley, but all opinions included are my own.

I didn't read this series the first time around and I'm so glad Kate republished it!! I love this story of Charlie and Max!! He is a cynical divorce attorney. She is a gilted wedding planner. They couldn't be more different. She wants a forever relationship and he wants to remain single. They both have been hurt before, both are guarding their hearts. As time goes on and they really get to know each other, they realize that even though they are different, they are perfect for each other. I love this book!!! I can't wait to read the rest of the series! I highly recommend this! You can't go wrong with a Kate Meader story!

My heart may have skipped a beat or two when Kate Meader revealed the sexy cover and synopsis for book one in her new “A Love Wars” series. With that series title, passionate skirmishes—verbal and physical—were almost guaranteed to fill the pages.

The banter and sexual tension live up to expectations. How could they not when pitting a wedding planner against a divorce lawyer? Both main characters are confident and strong willed, so don’t easily cede control.

Charlie Love is the absolute perfect name for a wedding planner and specifically this heroine, although she is a bit of a contradiction. “Charlie” is her direct, a bit prickly, quick to call BS side looking for just a good time while “Love” is the romantic looking to settle down with her HEA. I quite liked her, but sometimes had trouble equating the two sides were the same person.

Max Henderson definitely fits the part of the ruthless; marriage is a trap, divorce lawyer. He and I didn’t jive for most of the book. His brand of cockiness, need for control, and need to be the center of attention is a bit much for me. Although I must admit that by the time he finally owned up to his feelings, I had warmed up to him a little.

Surprisingly, there is plenty of action throughout the story, just not of the steamy variety I’ve come to expect in a Kate Meader book. I missed that. A lot.

I suppose the side story involving Charlie’s parents is necessary for the development of the storyline. For me it cast a negative, almost depressing pall that dimmed my enjoyment. Our age and status are eerily similar, which could explain its effect on me.

Enemies to lovers is my favorite trope; Kate Meader is a favorite, auto-buy author; so I expected to love this story. I wanted to love this story. But it just didn’t gel for me or touch me like the author’s previous books. That’s likely my issue, not hers. I’m looking forward to book two, and fully expect it will contain that Meader magic I’m used to.

I’m completely enamored by Kate Meader’s writing style. With each new story and cast of characters I fall deeper in love with her storytelling.

I know a lot of people, including myself most of the time, don’t want predictable stories, but I actually enjoyed that it was predictable without being dull and/or familiar. Could I figure out the long play of the story? Sure, but it was the excitement of the journey and the development of the characters that really drew me into this story. I really enjoyed the Emma Chase feel of Max’s POV. It was like he was telling his story to me specifically and doing so with a ton of charm and character. Was he a bit of a jerk, sure but once you made it past that surface stuff, he was all cuddles and romance.

I’m also a big fan of how the conflict between Max and Charlie was realistic and not over the top dramatic. I think it says a lot when an author can make you feel the intensity between two characters without having to emotionally devastate me as a reader.

All in all, this was a fantastic start to a new series. I’m really looking forward to hearing more from the secondary characters but I’m especially excited for a particular second chance romance. If I’m reading the foreshadowing correctly.

This story was delightful to read. Any time I read about a man who has a negative opinion about marriage meet his match, I know there'll be sparks flying. And they were.

Max and Charlie (Charlotte) were perfect foils. He's stoic, set in his ways, and a divorce lawyer, while she's a wedding planner who believes in true love. Their banter was pithy, they were well-developed and the plot moved forward at a nice pace.

I wasn't a huge fan of the overreacting reactions both of them were guilty of, but it wasn't ground to death so it was palatable.

I look forward to Lucas's book.

Like this writer’s style. The story moves at a good pace, the characters are likable, and Kate Meader delivers sexy romance that reminds me a bit of early Kristen Ashley. Max and Charlie exchange clever dialogue that is often funny and always a direct hit. Will definitely read her next book.

I absolutely loved this book! I know it was a change in style for Ms Meader however I loved the first person between both characters. As always it was so well written and each book I read of hers I am amazed at how connected I feel to the characters and the story. I laughed so many times while reading and just thoroughly enjoyed the book. Max and Charlie were brilliant together and the opposites attract worked for them so well. Max was very sexy and I loved Charlie. She was strong and funny! The old movie references throughout was one of the things I loved the most. I am really looking forward to the other books in the series! Although I did feel this was different than other Kate Leader books it is fantastic start to finish! Enjoy!!

‘Down with Love’ is book 1 of the “Laws of Attraction” series by Kate Meader. It is a standalone enemies to lovers romantic comedy that I adored...

Max is a divorce attorney he is good at his job and loves it. He sees the down side of love and considers himself a realist especially after his own failed engagement.

Though they’re completely at odds, when Max meets his brother’s gorgeous wedding planner Charlie he knows he’s fighting a losing battle... Max and Charlie had a crazy push and pull that was very entertaining and kept me swiping... I found myself laughing during their exchanges, cheering when sparks flew and falling head over heels for Max – he may be a cynic on the outside, but inside lives a romantic...

This was such a cute story with plenty of humour, steam and sweet moments. I loved how perceptive Max was. These two were so perfect for each other. This is one of those books that make you smile. 4.5 Stars.
