Ten Trends to Seduce Your Bestfriend Kindle Edition
Yes, they’ve known each other for years, but they’re not even friendly. Winnie considers them more like casual, distant acquaintances who find each other barely tolerable, especially when he's being condescending (which is all the time).
The truth is, they have nothing in common. She’s a public school science teacher with stars in her eyes, and he’s a pretentious, joyless double PhD turned world-famous bestselling fiction author. She loves sharing her passion for promulgating women in STEM careers and building community via social media, and he eschews all socialization, virtual or otherwise. She’s looking for a side hustle to help pay down a mountain of student debt, and his financial portfolio is the stuff of fiduciary wet dreams. So why are they faking a #bestfriend relationship for millions of online spectators?
When a simple case of tit-for-tat trends between nonfriends leads to a wholly unexpected kind of pretend, nothing is simple. Sometimes, it takes a public audience to reveal the truth of private feelings, and rarely—very rarely—you should believe what you see online.
Ten Trends to Seduce Your Bestfriend is a full-length, complete standalone, adult contemporary romantic comedy.

“Ten Trends to Seduce Your Best Friend” is incredibly well written. Winnie was an appealing enough character, but Byron blows her out of the water. I have read hundreds of romance novels over the years and have never read a character like Byron before. I don’t want to say anything that would spoil the story, but he’s somewhere in the realm of neurodivergent. Not sick or bad, just very unique and interesting.
This book is filled with the best kind of conflict. The tension is high, but because of the characters’ hangup and ways of viewing the world. I was constantly on the edge of my seat, wondering what would happen, but not once did I feel compelled to scream at the characters for being such idiots and/or behaving so badly. That’s a skill.
If I were to criticize anything about this book it’s that I wish there had been more chapters written from Byron’s perspective, but that’s really it. This was a fabulous story by a very skilled writer. Highly recommended if you like a good slow burn romance and are comfortable with explicit content.
- Reviewed in Canada on February 17, 2023Verified PurchaseI’ve only read a few books by Penny Reid, mainly because they are not offered on Kindle Unlimited. I read far too voraciously to buy them all. But Ten Trends to Seducing Your Bestfriend was available on KU, so perhaps this is a trend, like her book title?!
***Can I just say that the spelling of Bestfriend is killing me and I want to correct it every time I see it?! I think the author did it on purpose and I’m pretty sure it was Byron who didn’t like it either.***
One thing I love about Reid’s books is that her characters are usually quirky. I loved Byron’s tell-it-like-it-is character who speaks his truth, or doesn’t speak at all. I’m not familiar with the condition he’s labelled with, but I wish there were more people like him in the world! And Winnie (Fred), well, she’s a girl who just can’t ask for what she needs. So, you can see how these two would clash. But when he steps in and helps her with her STEM videos, everything changes, and the magic happens!
I will admit to getting a bit lost in the back and forthing between Byron and Winnie. Thank Dog Penny made this a dual perspective book because I probably would not have had as much empathy for the characters as I did. When reading such an unusual character as Byron, and how Winnie responds, it’s a bit on the whiplash-y side. I’m glad I reread the last several chapters (never read a book you plan to review when your belly is full of wine and the best food you’ve eaten in a very long time) this morning, because when I did, it felt like a much better book than I’d given it credit for.
It’s quirky, but worth the read.
Favourite passage:
It’s a shorty this time, but it’s just so freaking perfect!
“Only the brave love.”
- Reviewed in Canada on February 11, 2024Verified PurchaseI adore Byron and will protect him with my life. Honestly, the first chapter from his perspective SLAYED me. I teared up. And like, it wasn't even that emotional?? I think it was supposed to be funny, but I'm sitting here tearing up for the feelings of a soft grump I've known for thirty minutes.
ANYWAYS. Loved the Instagram reel incorporation - it was such a fun idea and gosh, I loved the tension and their chemistry, and the beautiful tender heart-to-heart moments as they get to know each other and understand one another's perspective better.
I also loved the soft sell of women in STEM being able to be all things they want to be - you can enjoy dressing up but also know the chemical compounds of your lipstick, or caring about dating and still be a badass aerospace engineer. Like women don't have to pick and I love how that was weaved into the story.
Have I mentioned I'd fight for Byron? Cause I'd do it. Almost all the highlights in this are his quotes or from his POV and I cannot. He's so good. And ugh. My heart.
All in all, a fantastic romance full of warm and fuzzy moments, fully developed and wonderful characters, and a surprising amount of self-awareness from the male MC, to the point that he is probably one of my favourite romance leads ever. Definitely a new favourite for me!

Penny Reid always creates the most dynamic, lovable characters and Ten Trends to Seduce Your Bestfriend was no exception. (Social media explanation within for the spelling of bestfriends.)
Win and Byron were completely endearing, their rapport very witty, and their story was refreshingly unique…and hot, hot chemistry between the two as Win navigates Science and TikTok in this romantic comedy. I had to do an immediate re-read because I loved Byron and Win so much.
Byron will be one of my favourites forevermore, and I hope he will for you. The opposite of womanizer.

5.0 out of 5 stars We all have to learn and grow
Verified PurchaseI was excited to read this new standalone by Penny Reid. But the reason I know it was excellent is that I did not have to charge my phone during the day because I was immersed in my Kindle. Winnifred Gobaldi is a middle school science teacher that records and posts STEM related videos to social media. As much as she loves her job, she needs some additional income to survive in Seattle. Her friend and roommate Ameila has a job opportunity that would be perfect for her but in order to qualify she needs to increase her following online. Winnie and Ameila come up with a plan to boost her views and followers and enlist the help of their mutual friend Jeff. When things do not work out with Jeff, Byron Vissier takes his place. Byron is a reclusive, intelligent, bestselling author that has previously disappeared from social media. His exclusivity and popularity bring the numbers Winnie needs but at what cost?
This is a longer book, but you get so wrapped up in the story that you want even more. Winnie and Byron are both relatable characters, especially to individuals that have lived in a highly academica centered life. Penny has her own experience in STEM to draw from but like any true researcher she has brought her receipts about women in STEM too. Winnie is a smart woman that loves the STEM fields and could theoretically do anything she set her mind to do, but she has chosen to teach and inspire others. When they start filming TikToks for to bring in followers, Winnie feels like she is being disingenuous. She does not want to distract from her STEM focus, but as Amelia points out, she can do both. "'[W]e can’t keep thinking about women in STEM as us versus them, where girls are either good at engineering or good at quote, unquote girly things. That’s changing in a big way—it’s already shifted—and companies, nonprofits, advertisers need to catch up.'"This is a lesson I wish I would have learned a lot sooner, myself. As a female engineering student I was out number 15:1. I oftentimes felt I needed to downplay my femininity in order to succeed or be taken seriously, but you can be both “pretty” and “smart”. I love that Winnie discovers that and acknowledges that it makes her human. None of us fit into one box.
Byron can seem a bit eccentric but the more we get to know him the easier he is to understand. I am so glad that Penny gave us his POV, without it I think we would have been as lost as Winnie about his thought process. Byron has been harboring his attraction and affection for Winnie for many years but she thinks he dislikes her because everything out of his mouth is a criticism or critique. Oh, the quiet ones. We often have a lot more going on in our head than we ever let anyone know. He may seem like a standoffish guy to the rest of the world but to those he truly cares about he would do absolutely anything, including dying hair.
This book does not have a huge conflict that needs to be solved for everyone to get a HEA but rather it is about how we all have to learn and grow to be happy. Byron and Winnie both have to face things about themselves that are uncomfortable not only for them but others. I felt like Penny did an excellent job depicting these characters realistically. We all know or are a Byron and have to find different ways to live in a social media age. Or we all know or are a Winnie that never wants to be a burden to anyone else. There are so many great quotes and inspirations in this book that I believe anyone can find someone to relate to, just don’t be a Jeff.

Verified PurchaseWinnie is a STEM teacher who's on every social media platform in existence and Byron is a reclusive author who doesn't like people.
Winnie likes everyone... But Byron. But when a side job that would be perfect for Winnie comes up, Byron helps her and she realises that maybe under that grumpy exterior is a soft man who just needs acceptance and a big hug.
I loved the representation of sensory issues in this book❣️
I spent the majority of the book laughing, giddy or yelling to just talk.
Tropes:
🥀Sunshine/grumpy
🥀One bed
🥀He falls first
🥀Miscommunication (but in a good way)
Spice 🌶️🌶️
I've never read a Penny Reid book before, but she's now a favourite. Brilliant in every way!
5/5
🔥(One of many loved) Quote: "But right now, he was looking at me like I was a meal. And he was starving."

5.0 out of 5 stars 5+ stars!
Verified PurchaseThis book is extraordinary. If I could give more than 5 stars to this book I definitely would!!
It has been a long time since I lost sleep for several days in a row to keep reading, but this one had me hooked from page 1. I couldn't put it down and kept waiting to finally see Byron's point of view the first night. It was after 1 am and the next day going to work was extremely difficult. But that didn't stop me from doing exactly the same thing the next night!! I became almost obsessed with reading their story and I'm sure I'll be rereading it again soon!!
Winnie is amazing. I would have definitely wanted to come across her tutorials when I was younger and interested in STEM, and she kind of is what I aspire to be when I work with younger people in STEM subjects. And Byron was simply intriguing. Of course you could tell he was into Win from the start and the first challenges were just hilariously amazing.
I don't really know how to put it into words more than:
I loved it so much I lost precious hours of sleep over it and didn't regret it one single bit!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another amazing book from Penny Reid
Verified PurchaseI loved it! Nearly read it in a single sitting, but had to go to sleep at some point - sadly. I didn‘t expect it to be over 500 Pages long! But it didn‘t feel like it had that many pages, never dragged, never got boring. And as always I loved the characters. Pennys characters are always „flawed“ and different, and that‘s what I love about her books. Winnie has a lot to learn about relationships and herself in this book and so does Byron. God, Byron! I loved him so much!
And I really liked how Penny portrayed his sensory processing disorder. Maybe because I could relate to quite a bit of that because I also struggle with noise and different smells or being touched - not to the extent Byron does, but I get the feeling of easily being overwhelmed with my surroundings
This is an incredibly sweet love story that makes you feel good about yourself. And what I particularly liked was the fact, that the characters talked to eachother. Maybe that was because Byron was nearly compulsivly honest about everything, but I always hate books with adults who just don‘t communicate and that leads to all this unnecessary drama. I‘m all for a little drama, but only the necessary kind.
