Once Upon a Frosty Winter: A Small Town, Misunderstood Grumpy Holiday Romance Kindle Edition
From USA Today bestselling author Gail Haris, comes a fun, steamy holiday romance with a contemporary fairytale twist. This grumpy duo will keep you entertained from the first page and have you, despite your best efforts, rooting for their happily ever after.
Hilda Queen is the woman everyone in Mistletoe Creek loves to dislike. She's effortlessly beautiful, wealthy, and has a stepdaughter close to her own age. For years she's been the topic of town gossip. She became a widow early in the marriage... conveniently. Then she fed her stepdaughter a poisoned apple... wicked.
Jax Frost plans to carve a place in the Old Man Winter family legacy. Eira White wants revenge against her stepmother, and Jax is eager to help. If he could obtain Queen Orchards, along with the land the White Estate is on, he could turn it into an Old Man Winter holiday travel resort and winter destination. That would no doubt secure his place in the family legacy.
Neither one is prepared for the other. Will the chemistry between the two be enough to thaw their cold hearts this Christmas?
Once upon a time…it’s how every good fairytale starts.
But these aren’t your childhood fairytales. This holiday season, eleven of your favorite authors are spicing up your favorite fairytales all set in the small town of Mistletoe Creek, Tennessee. Grab your cocoa and meet your Prince Charming because happily ever after has a whole new meaning…

About the author

Gail Haris believes in fairytales, love, and laughter as the best medicine. She has somewhat of a warped charm.
Steamy with a dash of sugar! Gail loves blending romance out of life's everyday chaos. Stories filled with humor and steam and moments of sweetness, along with suspense and twists. Death... and then sprinkle some glitter. "Let's make it awkward" is her motto.
Gail enjoys living in a small town in Southeast Missouri, and then taking adventures all over the world with her two fierce princesses and Boo Bear aka her ultimate real-life book boyfriend and high school sweetheart – basically the love of her life.
When she’s not getting into mischief or scheming with her two girls, she’s busy coming up with crazy scenarios for her characters.
Using coffee and her imagination, Gail writes contemporary romances that blend laughter and true love out of everyday chaos. She writes in a variety of genres including romantic comedy, romantic suspense, and new adult/coming of age romance.
Hopefully by following her dream of becoming an author, she can be an example to her daughters that their dreams can become a reality. Maybe she can encourage you, too.
Never stop believing in love, dreams, and yourself. And coffee…don’t give up on coffee and books ;)

- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2023I really enjoyed this novella, a perfect short story of a evil queen/jack frost happily ever after!
Sometimes the villains need an HEA too!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2023Loved all the little references in the story . Best one is the "Yoshi following apples" it had me smiling and laughing. It was truly a sweet and spicy blended short story and with the read.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2024I was hoping for so much. This is a new to me author and I wanted to love this novella. I realize this is a short story, but the whole thing seemed rushed and choppy. Maybe it’s part of a bigger story, but as is not my favorite.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2024Hilda and Jax are quite the pair. Both not looking for anything serious, end up falling in love. Hilda has endured a lot in her young life which made her pretend to be hard and unfeeling but all that changes. I am enjoying the Mistletoe Creek series and looking forward to the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2023Once Upon a Frosty Winter by Gail Haris is the 2nd book in the multi-author series, Mistletoe Creek. Books are stand alone, but characters pop up from time to time from other books.
I loved how this book is loosely based on the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale! Hilda could be the "evil ice queen", even though she is only just acting the part. Well, except for when she tried to poison her step daughter with a poisoned apple...wait, what?!? Hilda really wants to make a go of her inheritance, but her stepdaughter is conspiring with Jax Frost to take it away from her so Jax can turn her property into a Winter Wonderland resort. What Hilda and Jax realize is that they are meant to be together.
This is a funny story and a quick read. Perfect for the busy holiday season!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2023Hilda Queen (formerly White) is a young widow that has a reputation as the Evil Queen. Her estranged stepdaughter Eira (it means Snow) is trying to sell Hilda’s apple orchard out from under her. So yeah it’s a retelling of Snow White with the Queen as the FMC. I have to hand it to Gail Haris, she does a bang up job bring the fairytale in to the modern. There are great nods to the original story (best friend is Mira, who owns The Fairest of Them All Salon). The MMC is Jax Frost. And he is a jerk just like Hilda. But there is clearly a lid for every pot and so they find their own softness in each other). It really is a sweet (and steamy) retelling. No new ground is being broken, but it is a great companion on a cold winter’s day. (I was given an ARC)
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2023A quick Christmas novella with a representation of the Evil Queen, Hilda, and Jax Frost.
If you’re looking for a feel good story, where two come together that say they’ll never marry… it’s this book because fate just hadn’t put them together yet.
Hilda wasn’t given that great of circumstances with her first marriage, so she’s never planning to marry again. It’s put her in a mess since he made her widow and the step-mother to Eiya, who loathes Hilda with everything in her. So when Jax comes into the picture, he can’t quite help being mesmerized by Hilda over Eiya, who are just six years apart themselves.
I love a good punny book, and this Christmas book is full of puns! You’ll love it as much as I did, I’m sure of it!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2023What if the Evil Queen was misjudged? What if the poison apple was just an accident?
Hilda Queen doesn’t care what others say about her. Just leave the woman alone with her Apple Orchard and she will be in paradise. Her one true love.
That is, until Jax Frost comes into this UNfairy tale. Let’s not forget her step daughter wanting to uproot Hilda’s content life.
What a fun twist to the Evil Queen and Jack Frost! This is part of the Mistletoe Creek World and it makes me want to read more. The town is adorable, packed with characters that feel real. It’s amazing how Gail packs in so much detail and entertainment into this short story. This is definitely a recommended read!
