The Right Song is a modern-day retelling of The Little Mermaid. It is a steamy romance packed with emotion and just the right amount of page turning angst. It will bring tears to your eyes, but it will also make you smile. It is an uplifting story. Do not read it if you want a book with a sad ending. Do you believe in fairy tales? In happily ever after? In love?

Her latest, The Right Song, a Little Mermaid inspired story, is the 4th book in this series- totally addictive, angsty in all the right places and sizzling with plenty of heat! This suspenseful and twisty story will definitely rocked your world!
This time, a gorgeous, broken drummer and former boy band star, gets a much needed second chance, starting over in a band of friends he now considers brothers. Years ago, bad decisions caused Jack to lose someone irreplaceable to him and now, he can't stop this need to be protective when he sees trouble brewing. A good man on a mission is so irresistible!
When Jack Howard notices a beautiful woman backstage in need of a friend, he remembers his biggest mistake and decides at that moment, he wants to know everything he can about this sweet, fascinating girl. She's not very open to that idea, at first, but Lorelei Lane, a homeless former addict with a questionable profession, soon finds out that Jack means what he says and does what he can to prove to her he can be trusted to keep her safe. And that means everything in her world.
Lorelei and Jack quickly form a fragile attachment and they seem to need each other to feel happy and alive. She and Jack soon discover they have so many shared interests which draws them even closer together than they thought possible. Both have been let down, hurt many times and suffered unbelievable losses. Protecting their hearts by hiding their most broken pieces is how they've survived- each afraid the other won't stay if their truths are revealed.
The Right Song was quite a story and hit all the right notes for me- a romantic, swoonworthy and loving hero that could melt even the coldest heart. What a sexy, caring man Jack was. Sigh, he was a keeper and now, I want a Jack of my own! A kind, gentle soul, despite the circumstances she's had to endure over her lifetime, Lorelei still has an innocent quality about her that makes you want to pull her in for the biggest hug ever and tuck her away for safekeeping! This fairytale has layer upon delicious layer to peel back, with many bumps on the road to its happily ever after. What a beautiful story Michelle Mankin has once again given her readers to treasure! She's written a fantastic, heartwarming and satisfying ending for her lovable characters in the Once Upon a Rockstar series, including a surprising one for a certain couple of myterious and powerful record execs as well! Thanks, Michelle, I've been wondering about these two for years and simply loved the part they played in Jack and Lorelei's wonderful story!!
While each book in this series could stand on their own, these stories exist in a bigger world, one that could keep you entertained for days, so why not let the binge begin?
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
“The Right Song” is a contemporary romance novel that was lightly inspired by the fairytale The Little Mermaid. It features Jack Howard, a rockstar with a troubled past, and Lorelei Lane, a woman who has been through hell and back, and their path to love. Jack and Lorelei’s love story was incredibly emotional; they’re both such complex characters that it really added depth to the book. Jack has been alone for a very long time, and he’s never had a serious girlfriend either. But when he meets Lorelei, everything changes for him, and he knows he’ll do anything to keep her in his life. As for Lorelei, she’s been dealt a bad lot in life, but she’s trying to do better and make the best of things. I thought Jack was a wonderful character; he made mistakes but he also did his best to fix them and do right by Lorelei. Lorelei was a total sweetheart, I felt so bad for her because of things that happened in her past, but I was also really proud of her for turning her life around. All in all, this was a great read!!! I will definitely be going back and reading the other ones.
This love story will blow you away! The love and healing inside the pages of this story are unlike anything I have ever read! Lore and Jack both have so much weight on their shoulders but the love they have in their hearts outweighs it all especially when it comes to each other!
I knew this book was going to be emotional but I wasn’t ready for all of this! Mankin really knocked me on my butt and I don’t know if I’ll ever recover! The raw, honest truth and emotions in the pages of this book are so real and I felt every emotion. The pain, hurt, struggle and battle these characters faced are real life and the story Mankin created fills me with so much hope!
I loved the raw honesty that existed with these characters, and I mean ALL of them! Their love, resilience and growth is one of the many reasons I love this series! The second chance at life and love just makes my heart feel at peace in a world that often isn’t! Getting lost in Michelle’s books is my favorite past time and this book, this series really warms my soul!
I really enjoyed this. I do recommend checking TW’s before reading, but this was a great, quick read with a ton of emotion and wonderful characters. A bit on the cheesy side, but I liked the fast pace and the plot twists. *I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
The Right Song by Michelle Mankin is a rockstar romance that is book 4th and final book in the Once Upon a Rockstar series. OMG! OMG! OMG! Michelle Mankin outdoes herself with every single book she writes! This story is about Jack, the drummer for the Rush McMahon and a former member of the disbanded boy band New Horizon. Lorelei had so many bottoms fall out of her life that she did whatever she had to do to survive which included being a “working girl”. She wanted to get out of that line of work, but lack of references and experience closes many employment doors. A chance encounter between Jack and Lorelei backstage at a concert causes both their worlds to begin to spin out of control. Tangled threads are woven into webs of deceit, half-truths, lies, and regrets that entangle their hurting hearts. Getting things straightened out may cause more harm than good. The passion between Jack and Lorelei ignites into flames at each touch fueling their attraction. Before a HEA could be realized; both had issues trusting others as tempers flare, hurt blooms, and both of their past intrudes into the present. In the midst of it, all is an adorable dog named Prince. Each book written by Michelle Mankin is worth reading! I devour each of her books as soon as it becomes published.
I am not sure any review will do justice to this magnificent story, you really just need to read it, is it what fairytales are made of?, yes, but the deeply moving and, at times sad story is not always of the softy side of fairytale romances, so have your tissues ready, as Ms Mankin's did not hold back with either of our MC, both have dealt with pain and grief in their past and with people that you think should be there for you, you find out the cruel hard way they are really only out for themselves, but putting that all aside this is a romance and Jack is a totally swoon-worthy rock star, right from the start he didn't disappoint and apart from a slight wobble near the end, he remains in that category, Lorelei is just an exceptional young lady who has gone through so much since being in foster care at a young age, now her only champion a dog named 'Prince' who needs love as much as she does are about to be pulled back into Jack's life.
There is doubting the attraction and the chemistry between Jack and Lorelei, which grows with each page that you read, there will be plenty of bumps, bruises and revelations before this couple finally get their HEA, and if anyone deserves that, it is this pair.
I was gifted an ARC of this book by Literally Yours PR. It is the fourth book in the series. I wish I had read the others before because they are so many interconnected characters even though it is technically a standalone. I enjoyed the story, although I did find it lengthier than maybe necessary. Lorelei is a poor girl from the wrong side of the tracks. Prostituting herself simply to be able to eat. She wanted to escape her pimp and that life and traveled across country in hopes of meeting up with old friends. I’m doing so she met Jack, the drummer of a rock band and a former boy band member. Jack fell for her instantly and wanted to do anything to protect her. They had plenty of obstacles to overcome, both of their pasts and volatile exes, but they loved each other enough to put that all behind them and be together. I love the friendships that make up this story. Found family and always having each other’s back always makes stories more meaningful for me. In the blurb for this story, they call the book a modern retelling of The Little Mermaid. The only similarities I see is Lorelei’s musical talent. Considering how vague the fairytale aspect is, I’m less hesitant to read the others in the series.
This modern day Little Mermaid retelling follows a former boy band superstar turned rockstar who rescues a homeless working girl with a rough past.
There’s a mix of love at first sight with imposter syndrome that keeps tugging at your heart strings. Jack Howard was a total cinnamon roll who used his money to show his affection. I loved seeing this character who had such a tragic past find joy in being a caretaker and protector to Lorelei. His internal monologue was super fun to read. I loved that he fell hard and fast and that he spent much of the book trying to hold back his affection so as not to freak Lorelei out. I also loved that he saw past Lorelei’s rough past and present and found the heart under the grime.
Their romance was very much like a fairytale in that although it started fast it was also emotional, complicated, tragic, and beautiful. There was a sweeping you off your feet feeling permeates the page as well as an unsteadiness which I know sounds confusing but it as honestly great.
I loved Lorelei’s story. Her history was honestly hard to take in (read the TW carefully). Her history involves abuse of varying types and the book features attempted SA on the page. Regardless, she was someone who had been beaten down by the world and was really tentative to test her good fortune when Jack storms into her life. I adore her growth because there is a scene where she had to decide her own value / what she would allow in her life and I was cheering her on the whole time.
Read this if you love:

Lorelei is majorly down on her luck and has a tragic past. Certain events and despirations lead her to Jack who is a gorgeous rock star with his own tragic past and a disastrous marriage.

Going into this one I had great hopes . . . but the longer I read the more frustrated and aggravated I became. The writing didn’t wow by a longshot and I almost DNF this dramarama that can easily be read as a standalone even though it is the last book in the Once Upon a Rock Star series. From other reviews I’ve read, looks like I’m definitely in the minority.
Repetitious and boring sexual scenes that are simply copy/paste copy/paste copy/paste. Same old language that is rather dull and mundane. “Oh, Jack, Oh!” "Yes, Jack, yes.” "Please, Jack.” And, of course, let me not forget their constant hunger and worship for each other's various body parts. I'll leave that to your imagination. And that’s about all there is to their chemistry. More of the same over and over and over . . .
I gave this book the third star because the book did contain some beautiful passages of dialogue regarding feelings and emotions and especially in respect to the song lyrics. There was potential for a much better read – it just didn’t get there.
An underwhelming read to say the least for this reader.
Jack lost his younger brother to exhaustion and drugs, he blamed himself. His band dismantled and he hit rock bottom. He rebuilt himself, new band which were more like family. Lorelei is homeless, hungry but hopefully her old friends will take pity on her and Prince, her dog. Jack can see her and she sees him, his pain. Ms Mankin’s stories are not always a fairytale even when she clearly writes a fairytale. The characters are broken but not defeated. Lorelei has hit rock bottom but she can see Jack is in more pain than she. The chemistry of these two is off the charts but getting this broken girl to trust him isn’t going to be easy. The journey is really lovely and heartbreaking too, for some reason Jack wanted to help her from the very first night he met her. When these two got together it was furiously hot. I love that this book mentions a lot of the characters I loved from previous books, like the Dirt Dogs, Ms Timmons, Charles and The Label Black Cat. I loved Charles and Mary in love, I love it!! This book grabs you from page one and doesn’t let you go, total rollercoaster ride. The ending is fabulous, giving this book five stars and highly recommend it.
Jack is a former boy band frontman, the group broke up shortly after his brother Micah died. Jack has felt guilty for his death because he knew he was using. He was the older brother and felt like he should have done something. They both were just kids when they were discovered. They came from an abusive home, their father was an alcoholic and blamed the boys for his despair. Lorelei is a young homeless hooker with a past just as sad as Jacks. She is picked to go into where Jack is performing with his new band to be his nightly pleasure but when Jack sees her there is an instant connection between them. He feels an overwhelming need to protect her from all the bad things that have happened to her growing up in foster care.
This couple had lots of obstacles in their path, like Jack’s wife who was his brothers fiancé that he felt he owed his brother to take care of her. Lore is also keeping a huge secret that could derail them too.
They get to their HFN but it was battle hard fought by both of them. Jack and Lore both had their faults but they were stronger together.
Oh my heart, this story is a wonderful fairytale retelling.
Lorelei has a very difficult and sad past. She did and chose things that were no good, but she is now trying to move forward and make up for.
Jack feels guilty because of his brother’s fate. With their traumatic childhood he feels guilty because he didn’t stop his younger brother from his destructive path. That guilt over Micah’s death led him to a lost path. A creative struggle to be able again to create something new.
When these two meet, there is an instant connection and feelings. They both are meant to heal each other. Jack opens his heart and Lorelei finds her voice.
They have to endure and overcome hurting hearts, demons of their pasts. Fight through a web of secrets, lies and regrets.
A very touching and emotional story, learn to overcome the hurdles and struggles in life and find your happy ever after. So they get their second chance at everything good in life.
I'm writing this review for United Indie Book blog..
This book was so beautifully written. Two people who have been thru some rough times come together and ignite passion. Healing from the past and moving on from grief is what's happening. Lorelai has a jagged past and it still haunts her. She can't believe someone like Jack would want her and want to have the best in life. She takes a little to warm up to this. Jack, on the other hand, is a rock star. Tragedy happened and his world was rocked. Meeting Lorelai and falling instantly for her, brought back his love for music and his heart open for love. There's hurdles they have to jump over and counseling that happens but in the end, they both find what they need to be happy. Their relationship moves fast and there's drama along the way. I really liked this book and the characters in it. It was nice to see all the healing and broken relationships become whole again. This touches on some sensitive topics and the author handles it with so much care and love. Very well done!
This was a first book by this author for me but it won’t be the last. This story was so heartbreaking so be prepared for that. Jack went through so much as a child to have fame and riches yet he felt empty. With all that game came more problems and those problems stole his brother from him. Lorelei had a tuff child hood, raised in foster care only to have the people she trusted more than anyone use her and then throw her away. These two broken souls find each other and their journey will rip your heat out and crush it and yet it will heal and soar by the end of the book. The only reason I didn’t give it the full five stars is because there were some things I don’t like. I mean I understood why the author wrote them that way but still I was not into that like the whole way things end with Toby or the whole situation with Carrie. I get that Toby gets help but Carrie she needed to learn a lesson. But besides that it was a great story and one I highly recommend.

There were many parts of this I wanted to reach in and shake some characters. The bulk of this is sweet. I kept trying to compare it to The Little Mermaid and all I got was hair, a dog, and music. Oh, and some of the colors Lorelei wore. The beginning was heartfelt. But I honestly wish Lorelei hadn't been Toby's ex. The justification of their relationship that began when she was far too young didn't sit right with me. A lot of this didn't sit right with me. Jack's getting drunk and lashing out in the most heinous ways contradicts everything we saw of him as a character before this. And it was insulting to the trust they had built as a couple. Her recently reconnected friends defending him didn't go over well with me. Then we went stratospheric with the grand overtures. I got secondhand embarrassment for both Lorelei and Jack. The bones of this are great. But there's too much schmaltzyness that didn't mesh with the conflict. Personally, I would have ended this after the whole Loereli/Jack/Toby debacle at the hotel/hospital.
Another amazing addition to this interconnected series. This story revolves around Jack Howard, who was in a boy band called New Horizons with his brother Micah and Toby. Five years later, after a tragic incident Jack is now the drummer in Rush's band and this is where his life is forever changed when he is introduced to Lorelei Lane. She has also known heartbreak and tragedy, trying to forge a new path for herself with nothing to her name apart from her trusty and loyal companion Prince.
Their chemistry is instantaneous and scorching hot. Jack tries to take things slow, but is instantly smitten and knows he has found his special person. There are definitely hurdles they must face and hidden secrets that try to ruin them before they have a chance to see if they can make it together and yet ultimately love will always win. This was an emotional heartfelt love story that I could not put down. I absolutely loved it.
The Right Song is fairytale perfection. This is everything you want from a perfect happy ending no matter the trials the characters have to go through to get there. It is a loose retelling of The Little Mermaid with the FMC having her voice and choices suppressed. And Jack is most definitely a gorgeously perfect leading man.
I've been waiting to see how things turned out for Jack and Lorelei since I read the first few chapters in an anthology. Their finished story does not disappoint. Lorelei has a difficult history having endured abuse and addiction. She has made questionable choices but is trying to make amends and move forward. Jack is consumed with guilt having lost his brother to addiction. He is a rockstar who has lost his mojo. Meeting Lorelei opens his heart to create and sets them both on a path to healing.
This book is touching, heated and emotional. Michelle takes the fairy tale and gives the characters real life struggles to overcome which makes their happily ever after all the more beautiful. Jack is endlessly supportive and Lorelei has incredible sweetness and strength to forgive the demons of her past.
I adored every page. Michelle writes such detailed and delicious rockstars and I think Jack might be one of my new favourites.
4.6 stars This is that storyline where you know it is going to be full of heartfelt emotion and love. It is the fourth book in the Once Upon a Rock Star series and a modern day retelling of The Little Mermaid where the author delivers a healing that only comes from two souls who have had a rough path. Readers meet Jack and Lorelei. He is a rock star who is no stranger to tragedy that upended his world. She is a woman tortured by her past that still haunts her. When the two meet, their relationship is fast tracked and they learn and grow while dealing with new obstacles and challenges. Will they realize what is truly worth fighting for? Ms. Mankin knows how to bring out the depth of her characters with her words that any reader will feel the struggle they are going through. Her writing is raw and you just get lost in the best possible way. When all is said and done, feel what a second chance at love and life feels like…you will be glad you did.
Michelle Mankin's stories are always lyrical, beautiful, and steamy. Jack & Lorelei are the same, and so much more!
Their story of falling in love, trust, healing, and forgiveness is woven delightfully. There is plenty of passion - 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 - and it's based on deep feelings from the get go. Jack is aware of the care he needs to take with her bc of her past, and he makes sure to take that care.
I love the healing that takes place through the story. It's not an easy journey, while at the same time it is an easy one to read, to get lost in, to enjoy!
I love the way family & friendships are highlighted, the supporting characters from previous stories are also perfectly voiced. This is one of my favorite series from this author, and I'm so very grateful for the things it's taught me, and the blessing I've felt meeting this group of characters.
When tragedy and heartbreak are all that you know your take on life is skewed. Jack has tried to overcome the loss of his brother but has always felt guilt over his passing. Lorelei's past is filled with drugs, prostitution and an unhealthy view on self worth. One chance meeting brings them together and it is the combination of love and lyrics that bring them out of the past and into a future they both deserve. But just because they are deserving does not mean that it will be smooth sailing and only happiness. What does not kill us will only make us stronger and in this case it makes for a tough road to follow but the end was so worth it. Michelle Mankin will bring the readers through a very emotional journey that will rip them apart but slowly put them back together again better than they were before.
The Right Wrong by Michelle Mankin is the 4th book in the Once Upon a Rock Star Series. This story is sweet, amusing and Hot! It is a retelling of the fairy tale The Little Mermaid with Rock Stars.
the H/h had loads of chemistry. I loved Jack, he was so sweet. I was excited to read his and Loreleis story. Jack is in a popular boy band called New Horizon when a tragic event happens and changes the course of his life. 5 years later he is a drummer in Rush McMahons band.
Lorelei was hurt and betrayed in the past and becomes a homeless prostitute to survive. Lorelei tries to turn her life around and is hoping that her past mistakes can be forgiven, she’s tired, hungry and desperate when she meets Jack for the first time.
I love the Once Upon a Rock Star series and am a big fan of modern day fairy tails. I recommend this book.
I have read others by Michelle Mankin. I don’t remember them being squicky like this. It was a good story in theory. The love they displayed was real, when they weren’t hurting themselves or each other. But here are my issues: He knows she’s a prostitute when they meet. He knows she hooked her way across the country with various truckers. BUT, he has zero hesitation to go down on her the first time they are together?
There has to be more to love scenes than “oh Jack”, “yes Jack”, “Jack”. It was as bad as the movie Titanic.
The sex was overdone; I had to skim pages and pages.
Toby is a user and manipulator. He’s the reason Lore had to prostitute herself in the first place. I don’t care how many Step programs she did, there’s no forgiveness for that.
This book was everything for me. From the beginning until the end, this book was amazing. The story was seamless and embroidered with so many emotions, that you can't stop falling in love with the characters. This is a story about second chances in life. This is a story about finding love when you gave up at everything. This is a book about finding exactly what you deserve when you believe you don't need anything at all, or are too afraid to need anything. This is a book about courage to trust and hope after everything and everyone around you let you down. This love story is like an amazing song that will keep running through your heart long after you finish reading it. I highly recommend it 💕
I absolutely love everything that Michelle Mankin writes. The Right Song is the 4th book in her Once Upon A Tock Star series. This is a modern day retelling of The Little Mermaid.
Jack is a famous rockstar and Lorelei is a homeless gal just trying to survive. Their chance meeting backstage at a concert turns into something more than either imagined. They are from completely opposite worlds but are meant for each other. They go though alot of ups and downs throughout the story but end up exactly where they are meant to be in the end.
I loved the connection between Jack and Lorelei. It was fun catching up with the other characters from the series. I can't wait to see what Michelle is working on next!
This book was dreamy. New Horizon, a band that was a trio. Jack and his brother Micah and Toby. Tragedy caused the band to break apart. Years later, Jack is in a new band.
Lorelei is a foster kid and the stepsister of Toby. They both go through some terrible things as foster kids and she ends up homeless. She crosses the country to try to make amends with her friends and ends up meeting Jack.
Things pick up from there. It’s almost love at first sight. Jack sees something in Lorelei. He has this urge to protect her and takes her under his wing. She has a sordid past and betrayal issues and it takes him awhile to gain her trust.
This is the story of Jack and Lorelei. They first meet when she is brought backstage for him at a concert (basically a hookup). She has a lengthy history with his former band mate, Toby, but she keeps that to herself. They are immediately drawn to one another but both are living in the moment and not sharing everything with each other (Jack is technically still married). There are a lot of misunderstandings and angst (and a couple of times I cried, because you just want these two wounded people to have some happiness, you know?). There is eventually a happily ever after though -- make sure to get the bonus epilogue (ahhhh, so sweet and a sneak peek).
Michelle Mankin has outdone herself! This book is full to the brim with relationships, emotion, adversity, trauma, heartbreak, love, passion, triumph, forgiveness and more! There’s so much love and healing that your heart will overflow. I love how there’s a consistent emphasis on strength in doing things together when there’s such a pull to do them alone. What a great message! Jack and Lore are perfect for each other and complete the family in a magical way! Also, theirs isn’t the only love story woven into this great book! It’s a must read!
