They say timing is everything, and for single dad Hamish Colquhoun, the timing couldn't be worse. With a new law practice to establish, a centuries-old farmhouse to restore, and the challenges of raising a tween daughter, romance is the last thing on his mind. But when Afton Lennox, his best friend’s runaway bride, comes home seeking redemption, she ignites all the feelings he’s tried for years to bury.
Will he let his guarded heart take a leap of faith to write a new ending to their shared history?
Kait Nolan is a RITA® Award-winning Mississippi author who calls everyone sugar, honey, or darlin', and can wield a 'Bless your heart' like a Snuggie or a saber, depending on requirements. She believes in love, laughter, and that tacos are the world's most perfect food. When she's not writing, reading, working the evil day job, or wrangling family (both the two-legged and the four-), you can find her obsessively watching The Great British Bake Off.
Things were going really well with this story until BAM they went off the rails at the end.
Listen, I’m a big Kait Nolan fan. To my estimation, I think she’s written in the neighborhood of 62 books, of which I’ve read all but 4 of them. One thing she did in all her early books was have a third act break up caused by miscommunication. It used to drive me bonkers. But then she stopped doing that and I was a happy, happy reader.
So guess want happened here to make me cranky? A third act break up cause by miscommunication. It was so silly and unnecessary.
I’m looking forward to the book that was “started” at the end of this one (I’ve already listened to the prequel). I’m just hoping we get later Kait writing instead of earlier Kait…
This book was a pleasant surprise, from the previous book we see how Afton arrives out of nowhere and one thinks she interrupts a wedding but no, reading this story, her book made me realize many things.
Afton left the town and was never heard from again until almost two years later when she returns to make peace with everyone she disappointed, while she was away she found love in cooking and becomes a chef, here I will say that I liked her personality, reading her story and knowing everything she thought when she left the town was one of the best things, her relationship with Hamish's daughter, Freya I loved, knowing that she could get along so well with her and teach her things was great to read.
Hamish is a slightly grumpy character, but just a little bit eh nothing out of this world, he went through a divorce where he did not end on good terms with his ex and ended up with full custody of his daughter, he is a lawyer and I liked to see a little bit of the struggle he had here with his career.
The relationship between these two was good, they were friends but they always felt something for each other but for obvious reasons they couldn't do anything, it has a little bit of drama out of nowhere and I think that's why I don't give it 5 stars, but it resolves quickly so let's say I liked it; it was a light and quick read.
Thanks to the author and Wildfire Marketing Solutions for the e-arc in exchange for my honest review!!

4.5 ⭐️. I love a book that can make me shed a few tears and leave me with the warm and fuzzies. I love the authenticity of normal lives being lived that Kait delivers. This book was worth the wait and I’m not at all surprised Ewan’s friends are getting a book. I felt more connected and invested in Ciara during Protector in a Kilt but I will still be liking up for Secial Op Scots. Back to this book, I absolutely loved how Hamish and Afton truly saw each other in a way no one else could which allowed them to step in and be what the other person needed when they needed it. Freya was a ray of sunshine. I do wish a little in the epilogue or bonus we’d got to see Hamish kicking a some non relationship goals because I felt like with Afton’s support he would re find his footing, maybe we will get to see glimpses in the next series. A delightful read
Kait's book #5 in this series goes back to the woman we met at the beginning of the series. It chronicles the current story of Afton's return to Glenlaig, as well as her return to Hamish, whom she has secretly loved from afar for many years. I highly recommend the story, it was beautiful. I've loved reading this entire series. And I'll miss these wonderful characters and their Glenlaig village setting as this, sadly, is the last book of the series. Sniff-sniffle. I see myself reading these books over and over again.
Loved this one. Aston & Hamish have some definite odds in their favour, but nothing is ever easy is it?
Single dads are the best because they have the meddling children to deal with. Freya was my absolute favourite character of this entire series. I hope she grows up to get her own story one day.
I was so excited to finally read about Afton and Hamish! What a great read - love seeing all the characters come to life in each and every book from Kait! I can’t wait to see what happens when Freya and Ari start a matchmaking business!
So glad to see Hamish get his HEA. If you like 2nd Chance, slow burn, Single Dad angst with the sweetest daughter “parent-trapping,” then Afton and Hamish’s story is for you.
Sigh! This is the story I’ve been waiting the whole series for. And it was so very, very worth the wait. Especially with the cameo appearances from a few of the Misfit Inn regulars and some Bad Boy Bakers. Afton and Hamish have been loving one another from afar for just about as long as they’ve known each other. But until recently, Fate had conspired to keep the pair apart. Now that they’re both free of other commitments, can the two of them overcome a lifetime’s conditioning and find happiness together? I adored these two. They made me want to smack them almost as often as I wanted to hug them. And even though we’ve finally seen Happy Ever Afters for all of Lochmara and Ardinmuir, I’m beyond excited to know that we haven’t read the last of the inhabitants of Glenlaig village. I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book from the author.
A love story set in Scotland? Yes, please! This book was better than I had hoped. It is definitely not a typical love story of boy meets girl and they live happily ever after. Afton and Hamish have waited a long time for their story to unfold, and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. This is part of a series, but the author clearly explains the backstory of the characters involved and it can definitely be read as a standalone. This book explains why Afton had to escape from a certain situation, and includes second chances, romance, misunderstandings (of course!), and a wicked ex-wife thrown in for fun. I love every Kait Nolan book (and I’ve read them all). I can’t wait for more stories set in Scotland. I’m hooked and am confident you will be too.
I knew I was going to love this bc of the novella! I was just so sold on the chemistry of Hamish and Afton !!
What I liked:
- Again, I adored the chemistry between Hamish and Afton - they were written like they were CLEARLY soul mates. Their journey back to each other was so stinking cute, I had butterflies reading their interactions. Both were so shy and timid and scared the other wasn't into them. Reminded me so much of my husband and me before we started dating !!
- The character driven plot was great. Both MFC and MMC had great character development and I was so happy to see how things turned out for them both.
- THE SIDE CHARACTERS. I loved them all, and even though I didn't read the stories before this one - I didn't feel too lost in their backgrounds and their role in the main characters development. Hamishs' daughter Freya was SUCH an amazing character, and she nearly brought me to tears multiple times.
Other thoughts:
My only complaint is the miscommunication trope was heavy in this one lol and I was getting a tad bit annoyed !
Likeable characters and a decent story. The conflicts came from communication issues, which I don’t enjoy. Glad it was addressed!
I wish these books didn’t end with teasers for future books. It always leaves the story feeling unfinished; and it’s even worse when this is the final book in the series! Apparently there’s a spin-off series coming. I’m not mad about that, but tell me about it in the afterword not in the text!!
Afton is finally coming home, years after she ran out on her family's old fashioned marriage pact. Her friend, the man she was supposed to marry, is marrying his real love, and Afton wants to see her friends declare their commitment to each other. And perhaps, see her own true love, Hamish, the man who's always been off-limits to her.
Hamish needs help. He's feeling so out of his depth now that his mom is away helping his grandma. He needs a nanny for his pre-teen daughter, and stat. Then Afton comes home and his daughter Freya forms this connection with her. Can he really ask Afton to be her temporary nanny, shortly after he rejected her feelings?
I've wanted to get Afton's story this whole series, and now that I've gotten it, I'm sad it's all over. Afton is quite simply, amazing. Though she says she made the selfish decision to gamble away her estate, I don't think of it really as selfish, especially considering the way it all worked out for everyone. She had her whole family's legacy resting on her young shoulders, I can't believe she hadn't crumbled long before that with all the pressure she was under, and no one there to really look out for her but herself. Hamish too had no one around to look out for him, and had put so much pressure on himself, thinking he had to be perfect, had to always win every case, be everything to everyone. Two wounded souls who finally find love with each other, with their friends and family around to give a helping hand, a pep talk or two, and to absolve them of the guilt both were carrying - this is a heartfelt, beautiful way to end this wonderful series.
ARC provided by Wildfire Marketing Solutions for an honest review.
Finally, Afton and Hamish story in Single Dad in a Kilt by Kait Nolan, book five in her Kilted Hearts series, the story I’ve been waiting for since the beginning of the Kilted Heart series, and a wonderful way to conclude this series that began with them. This was a story about forgiveness and understanding and friendship and love.
After intentionally gambling away her estate in Scotland to Texas cowboy, Raleigh, Afton Lennox created a new life for herself in Eden Ridge, Tennessee. Her new friends inform her that Connor, the man she was pledged to marry, thanks to a 300-year-old Marriage Pact, is getting married; to her friend Sophie. These new friends gave Afton the strength to go back home and face the consequences of her decision to leave. She has no idea what has happened in Glenlaig, or how she’ll be greeted; only that she needs to go back and figure out who she is now that the legacy and marriage pact are no longer hanging over her head. Afton arrives, armed with some new talents and skills; amazing in the kitchen as well as stronger and more independent.
Hamish Colquhoun was struggling with all the recent changes in his life: his divorce, being a single father to his twelve-year-old daughter Freya, becoming a small-town lawyer, and finding time to fix up his new home. When Afton returns, they finally have a chance to figure out how to deal with their mutual attraction and chemistry. With Afton in need of a job and Hamish in need of a nanny, they decide to help each other out. Being a nanny to Freya allows for a bonding between the two; especially shared time in the kitchen that were super sweet and moments that melted your heart. When things go wrong between Hamish and Afton, Freya plays a bit of the parent trap game, trying to push those two together; to give her dad Hamish the nudge he needed to claim the woman he had always loved.
Kait Nolan created the perfect finale for the Kilted Hearts series by perfectly incorporating characters from both of her Scotland and Tennessee series. Hamish and Afton were perfect for each other with a foundation of friendship and magnetism, drawing them together. As Afton attempts to find a new place in her old home town, we see not only how well everyone fits together and how much had transpired, her leaving had set in motion. It was wonderful how everyone united to help and support Afton as she forms a new life; especially finding her the perfect way to use the skills she learned while in Tennessee. Best of all was that so many others had found their own happily-ever-afters because one woman was brave enough to change her stars leaving everything she loved behind her. I highly recommend Single Dad in a Kilt to other readers and look forward to what Kait Nolan has next for her readers; hopefully another Scottish series with Ciara’s story.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
Afton and Hamish finally have their story told, which is a wonderful way to tie up this series that began with them. With Hamish divorced and finally free, and Afton liberated from the antiquated Marriage Pact, they get their chance to try to work toward a life together. The only complication for them is Hamish’s twelve-year-old daughter Freya. Will Hamish allow them to form a romantic relationship, or will he focus on protecting Freya and put up walls to keep Afton at arm’s length?
For the last year and a half, since she purposefully gambled away her estate in Scotland to Texas cowboy, Raleigh, Afton Lennox has formed a life in Tennessee. When she learns that Connor, the man she pledged to marry due to a 300-year-old Marriage Pact, is marrying her friend Sophie, she’s determined to attend the wedding. She has no idea what’s happened in Glenlaig, or how she’ll be greeted. Still, she’s resolute that she must attend. What she finds will have an impact on her life.
The author has beautifully incorporated characters from both Scotland and Tennessee. She’s also created a realistic romance; it’s not all smooth sailing. As Afton attempts to find a new place in her old home town, we see just how well everyone fits together. It was a delight to see how all those Afton left behind come together to help and support her as she forms that new life. As in earlier books, the characters are wonderful. In this volume, I especially liked Freya and the goats. You'll have to read this to find out just what that means.
Be prepared, for Afton has some new talents and skills. She breathtaking in the kitchen. She’s also a wonder with Freya.
While I’m sad to see this series come to an end, I’m delighted with how it ended. While this book can stand on its own, reading it will be much more meaningful if you’ve read the series from the beginning and understand all the relationships. The author does her best to provide most of the significant relationship details, but it’s not quite the same an seeing how each set of couples came together.
This was a lovely read, and I highly recommend it. Kate Nolan never lets her readers down.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book from the author. I thank her for her generosity, but it had no effect on this review. All opinions in this review reflect my true and honest reactions to reading this book.
Though I own a lot of books by Kait and had her books in my TBR from a long time this is the first book that I have read of her and I completely understand why everyone falls in love with her work. I was in love with her writing and the amazing world she has created.
This read was one hell of an emotional rollercoaster for me. I literally had heart palptations and could not control my tears at several instances. I was anxious throughout the read and was rooting for Afton and Hamish to find happiness together which was well deserved.
Afton and Hamish won my heart from the first page along with Freya. I was in awe with Afton for her strength and resilience. She gave up her everything for a chance at freedom and love. Though her choice effected a lot of lives she had the courage to take the leap when no one even understood her.
Honestly, I am a bit biased towards Afton coz she was my absolute favourite along with Freya in the read. I loved the bond Freya and Afton shared. I liked how the story progressed slowly. Coz Afton needed to move on from the guilt and Hamish had to overcome his own struggles.
I loved the read and it is definitely one of the top reads of the year but I had a lot of conflicting feeling towards the secondary characters. I believe that if I would have began the series from the start I would view a few things differently. I could not help but dislike many of them when they question Afton for her return.
From everything I understood she was the one who set everything in motion because of which they gained the love and happiness. I do understand that they might have faced a lot of trouble as well but despite them warming up towards Afton later I could not forgive them.
Coz at the end of the day all of them had each other but she was building a life from the scratch alone. She was lucky to find people to call friends and family when she had none. I'm gonna go and read the rest of the books from the series asap so I can fall in love with others in the bunch coz I liked them despite not forgiving them.
This is a heart warming read which tugged at my heart strings and left me craving for more. Thanks to Kait and Wildfire Marketing for the advanced copy of this mind-blowing read.
A strong heroine, a weak hero, and lots of gourmet cooking.
Having read the prequel to Book 5, I couldn't wait to read Afton and Hamish's story. Sadly, Single Dad in a Kilt let me down. Hamish is not the strong, protective hero I'd expected. Instead, he's a rather weak, self-pitying man who's overwhelmed by his responsibilities as a single parent to his 12-year-old daughter, Freya. When Afton Lennox--the woman Hamish has secretly loved for years--returns to Scotland and confesses her mutual love for him, Hamish shoots her down, claiming he has to focus solely on Freya.
Afton volunteers to work as Freya's temporary nanny, which puts her in daily contact with Hamish, who finally gives in to his desire during a steamy scene at 47% in. But he's not done "being an idiot." When Hamish--a family law attorney--loses a child custody case in court, he blames himself for "failing left and right . . . disappointing so many people in so many ways."
When Afton drives to Edinburgh for a day, Hamish wrongly assumes that she's interviewing for a job as a chef in one of the city's finest restaurants. Believing Afton intends to leave him for something better, "because he wasn't enough," he verbally attacks her when she returns that night. "What is it about me that makes the women in my life think that I should come dead last?"
Stunned by his groundless accusations, Afton wonders if Hamish really loves her at all. "Because if you loved someone, you didn't attack them without cause." Will she forgive him? I'm not saying.
I'm not a foodie, so the story's numerous descriptions of gourmet recipes and cooking held no interest for me. Foodies will most likely gobble up those pages! Also, the story contains virtually no suspense. Hamish's nasty ex-wife (Dayna) threatens to take him back to court over custody of Freya, but that goes nowhere. I loved Freya, a delightful "tween" who dislikes her mother and adores Afton. Rightly so, because Afton is a strong, resourceful person. I wish I could say the same about Hamish.
Book five is the final book in the series. Though it can be read as a standalone, it wraps the series that begins with the prequel in a way that readers will seriously want to read the whole series to get the maximum impact. It is written in third person from an alternating dual POV and ends with a HEA. Since Afton ran away in the prequel, readers and villagers have been in the dark about what she has been doing and where she has been. I adored her story arc. She has come to terms with her sacrifice for her freedom and set herself on a path to a fulfilling future. She returns to Glenlaig to tie up some loose ends only to discover that things are now very different to what they were when she left. The biggest surprise was learning that Hamish is now back in Glenlaig after his recent divorce. I love Afton’s faith, her perseverance, and the love she has for Hamish and Freya. Hamish is struggling with all the recent changes in his life. When Afton returns, he is terrified that he doesn’t have it together enough to be what she needs. Afton has a very mature outlook on their possible future. When Hamish messes up, she lets him know it, but is ready to forgive him too. On of my favorite things is how his daughter Freya and Afton bond in the most beautiful way. It touched me deeply. Hamish is a good guy that I have liked from the beginning. I love how perfect he and Afton are for each other, their foundation of friendship, and the chemistry they share. This was medium heat with some explicit scenes, humor, a little angst, and a very happy ending. I loved this series and felt like this final book brought all the stories full circle. At the same time, the author sets up the new series in Scotland to come in 2024. I am super excited about this, and I cannot wait. I am voluntarily leaving this honest review after receiving an advance reader copy of the book.
After finding the only way out of the Marriage Pact that she could, Afton finally finds herself ready to return to the home she ran from. Hoping to make amends and not knowing if she would stay or what would come next, she finds that the man she has been in love with for years is newly divorced . . . and in need of a helping hand.
Hamish has always been the man everyone can count on. But a failed marriage, becoming a single father, purchasing a fixer upper and moving from corporate to family law may be one thing too many to handle on his own. When his daughter suggests Afton could be a temporary nanny both are taken aback but agree, neither realizing what it would lead too since Hamish has been in love with Afton for years too.
What follows is magic. It's messy and emotional. It's beautiful and sexy. And it's the family and relationship they both have been looking for. But will it be enough as Afton searches for a permanent chef position in their tiny village, Hamish's ex wife causes issues and family law gets all too real?
Hamish is such a stand up guy. It’s so hard for him to admit he is drowning. He really deserves a bit of happiness since he is such an amazing father and friend. Afton has finally started to find herself after she escaped the marriage pact, yet terrified at how the mess she left behind and the people she hurt will react to her coming home. And, twelve year old Freya was wise beyond her years and a super fun addition to the story! It was amazing to watch the relationships and friendships rekindle with so many co-conspirators working with Freya on a bit of a parent trap scenario for Hamish and Afton.
This book had so many ups and downs emotionally. Which is life. It's beautiful and messy, wonderful and hard. And this book showcased that perfectly! I Loved this series so much and I’m glad to see the characters may be continuing into the next series. 5 stars
I have been waiting for Afton and Hamish story since the beginning of the Kilted Heart series.
Afton felt isolated and alone and did what she needed to do to get herself out of the marriage pact with Hamish’s advice. She knew her decision would have repercussions for everybody else but she had to make the selfish decision. Her decision changed everybody’s help. She did not want to know whether it was for the best or the worst but all worked out in the end for everybody else.
She had to go and find what she was without a legacy and marriage pact over her head and she came back stronger and more independent. Loved that she found a home and family in Eden Ridge. They gave her the strength to go back home and face the consequences of her decision. Afton was welcomed after everybody realised her decision brought more joy than heartache.
Hamish was dealing for the first time with failure. Failing to find an easy solution to the marriage pact was his first failure in his mind. He felt he failed Afton even though things worked out in the end. Then his marriage ended and he thought he was failing as a single father. He had to come to terms with the fact that things don’t always work out the way you want it and if you focus on the bad you won’t see the good.
Afton and Hamish got their HEA with a little help from their friends and family. Afton found a home where she was not alone or isolated but part of something and contributing. Hamish was able to come to terms that he could not control everything and settled into his new normal.
Can’t wait to get back to this little Scottish town of people who all looks after each other and support and love despite what you might have done in the past.
This was a cute story about Afton returning home and making things right with the people her actions may have hurt in her decision to avoid her impending obligations. We loved that she faced her demons enough to come back home to the people she missed and loved not knowing if they all would hate her or not but, still felt she needed to return even if it was only for Connor's wedding, and apologize for her actions that affected so many people loved. What she did with her freedom is she created a life that made her happy.
The story was about forgiveness and understanding and friendship and love. We loved that it seemed the whole village her friends and Freya were all in cahoots together to give her dad Hamish the nudge he needed to claim the woman he had always loved.
We loved the new version of Afton she was happy loving and funny. We admired Hamish for wanting to put his daughter first even if he was willing to sacrifice the woman he loved.
Freya was a sweetheart of a girl and we loved how protective she was of Afton when others spoke out against the woman she too had come to love. There were moments in the kitchen between them that were super sweet and moments that melted your heart.
Loved the slow-burn romance that was fun and made you smile. The characters were amazing and we got updates on all their lives it was exciting to see just how much had transpired with her friend's lives while she was off finding herself and chasing her own happily ever after. Hamish and Freya made such a cute couple but, would make an even better family. Most of all loved that so many others had found their own happily-ever-afters because one woman was brave enough to change her stars leaving everything she loved behind her.
This is the fifth book in this series, 6 if you count the prequel. Afton ran from a complicated situation involving an arranged marriage. Hamish life has taken a drastic turn since he let Afton about the possible out in her situation. Now she is back. Afton has come back now that she knows Connor is getting married. She doesn’t know if she will stay or not. She wants to make amends to everyone affected by her choice. What she never expected was to come back and find that Hamish was now divorced and had moved back with his daughter. Afton and Hamish will have to face how they feel about each other and whether or not there could be anything going forward. Hamish and Afton has wanted each other for a long time but nothing could come of it before, but now it can. Hamish feels like he can’t give Afton what she deserves so he doesn’t want to start anything. Afton steps up when Hamish needs help with his daughter, Freya. If helping out leads to him seeing that they should give them a chance then so be it. This book was a fantastic read. I was hooked right from the start. I haven’t read any of the other books in the series. I wasn’t lost of confused but I can’t wait to read the others now. Afton is a wonderful woman who thought her life was going to go one way almost her whole life and now has a chance to do what she wants. Her choice to run affected many people but it seems it was all for the best. Hamish holds himself to a high standard but lately he has been feeling like he is failing on all fronts. The pair will help each other in ways they never imagined. I highly recommend this book and the series. Wonderful job Kait.
Another of my fave series has come to an end but I'm hoping it won't be the last we see of these characters.
Afton is the one who set this whole series in motion, so it's fitting that she also be the one to close it. She's been hiding out essentially for the last year or two, afraid to come home to the turmoil she set off, the relationships she strained, the friends and family she left without a goodbye. She has managed to forge a career for herself and found a substitute family but she's decided now is the time to make amends.
Poor Hamish is struggling. He's a new law practice on the go, a daughter who needs him, an ex-wife who seems to have opted out of her responsibilities and a home that needs a serious amount of work. HIs grandma also needs an operation so he doesn't have his parents to lean on. Then Afton breezes back into his life. The one who was always there, in the back of his mind, the third person in his marriage. And now Freya's new nanny!
Afton may see herself as the baddie and running away as selfish. She was as much a victim to the wedding pact as anyone, she just decided to take action and do something about it. She didn't gamble away the estate willy-nilly, she made sure that the new owner would take care of it and was a nice guy. She cut herself off from friends and family and didn't even stalk them on social media so had no idea what was happening at home.
Hamish has tried too hard to be perfect at everything. Sometimes you need to fail to succeed. These two have sharp edges the other can dull. I loved the way Afton made amends and made herself part of the community once more. Beautiful ending to a fantastic series.
I have been waiting for Hamish and Afton’s story since reading the set up in Jilting the Kilt. This book did not disappoint. I loved everything about it. The storyline was imaginative, characters lovable and relatable, and the writing addictive. I want to live in this little Scottish town with all my new friends. And the goats. Hamish is a divorced single dad to 12 yo Freya. He is remodeling an old house, working full time as a family lawyer, and trying to raise his daughter who he now has primary custody of. Afton has just returned to her small hometown of Glenlaig after running away 20 months ago from a forced marriage resulting from an antiquated marriage pact and then gambling away her ancestral home. Hamish and Afton have had feelings for each other for years though neither one acted on it. Now Afton is back, feelings have been confessed, but lines have been drawn, and Afton is now the temporary nanny. The way their relationship developed naturally out of sharing time as a pseudo family with Freya as the center made my soft heart melt into happy goo. Freya was such a wonderful and integral addition to the story rather than a flimsy story prop. The story would not have been as rich and well rounded without the full development and inclusion of her character. The journey to Hamish and Afton’s HEA included sweet moments, steamy scenes, chuckles, supportive friends, messy families, painful pasts, healing, and all the heart squeezing love. Plus all the big feels - laughing, crying, swooning, teeth gritting, and cheering. I am so happy there will a new series in this world.
This romance is one I’ve been eagerly anticipating, and it definitely did not disappoint! I adore these Highland heroes and their strong ladies, but finally, we get Hamish and Afton's story!
And what a story it is! If you’ve been keeping up with this series, you know that Afton and Hamish have a history, with a side of unresolved…something. Now, Afton has returned to Glenlaig and, for Hamish, the timing couldn’t be worse. He's trying to get his family law practice off the ground, renovate an old farm house, and single parent his daughter, Freya. He doesn’t have the bandwidth for anything extra in his overly busy life.
For Afton, returning to Glenlaig is something she always planned to do, but she's rightfully apprehensive about the reception she'll get. Her actions have affected her family, and she has no idea what transpired during her absence. As she’s finding her footing and her place in the family again, while hoping to start her own business, there’s one need she sees that she can fill.
I adore these characters and this series so much, and reading Hamish and Afton's story was better than I ever could have anticipated. At it’s heart, this one is about family, the one you’re born into and the one you make. It's about redemption, second chances, and always being there for the ones you love. It's about mated souls, fulfilling dreams, and love's perfect timing. Charming, sweet, humorous, and heartfelt, this one will have you falling in love with kilted heroes all over again!
Hamish Colquhoun has loved Afton Lennox forever; Afton has felt the same for him. Afton was promised to another man through a 300-year-old marriage pact. She ran away and gambled her legacy away to save her and her friend Connor from their impending marriage. The outcomes of her actions were laid out in the first four books of this series. Single Dad in a Kilt is the final book in the Kilted Hearts series and it is so good to see Afton come home. At least that’s what the newly divorced Hamish thinks. He’s drowning in single parenthood, and Afton offers help, seeing his need.
I love Kait Nolan’s stories. She creates characters that are easy to connect with, found families you want to belong to, and stories you can sink into. I was captivated by these characters from the first page. Hamish, while not perfect, was a swoon-worthy hero. His heart’s always in the right place. Afton is ready to make the next leap in her life and wants it to be with Hamish and his daughter Freya. If you’ve not read the whole series, I urge you to pick up Jilting the Kilt, the prequel book at the very least, and read that for the background of the marriage pact. You’ll be delighted and want to read the entire series. I enjoyed seeing many characters from other series cross over to this emotional and delightful story. This was the perfect culmination of the Kilted Hearts series. I look forward to Ciara's story and the next Kait Nolan Highland series. I received an arc of this book from Wildfire Marketing, and this is my honest review.
I have been so excited to read Afton & Hamish's story that I gobbled up Single Dad in a Kilt in like 2 sittings. He is the protective (now) single dad trying to manage a daughter, a business and a bunch of goats. Hamish is used to being the one to provide everyone around him with help, whether it's legal or simply taking on a few goats for a former client, but he's struggling being a single dad, family lawyer and owner of a falling down farm house.
Enter Afton, the woman he's carried a torch for since the beginning of time but until recently she was promised to someone else--his best friend. When Afton learns that Colin is set to be married--not to her--she finall (finally!!!!) returns to Scotland and it's nothing at all like what she's expecting.
Armed with her chef's education, Afton wants to find a way to open a restaurant that lets her stay in town and serve her kind of food. But Hamish needs help and not just the culinary kind. With a meddling little girl and lifelong friends for backup, it turns out that the simmering passion between them won't be ignored.
I LOVED the story more than I can say, almost more than I love Kyla & Raleigh's story. Almost. They were great together, you really got a sense of their lifelong friendship and it's so seamless to watch it all fall itno place, not just with Afton but the rest of the crew as well. It was a fun time that kept me smiling, laughing, gasping and pressin' a hand to my heart.
I don't care that this book is the last book in the Kilted Hearts series because what I want to tell you is that it's one of masterpieces of Kait Nolan and I would recommend you to read it or at least start reading this series from the first book till the last one! They're all worth the time you spend reading, I can guarantee you that!
Afton and Hamish's love story touchs my heart HARD and Nolan writes it so good that I can feel all of Afton's insecurities. I cry, cry, and cry for her from the start through the end.
Afton has been through with her responsibility so much and she sacrifices her life to be free. Her unconditional love for Hamish breaks my heart so when Hamish who is a perfectionist hurts her heart again, I want to smack his head so badly! Don't get me wrong, Hamish is a good guy and he truely love Afton but he has a baggage and that is a reason why he trying so hard to resist her.
But while I cry so hard for Afton, the story is very heartwarming with Afton's friends welcoming her back... and I cry again for that as well, LOL.
I've waited for Afton and Hamish's book for so long and I have to say Nolan is quite cruel for making me wait for it. But it's worth the wait and Nolan's idea to make it the last book of the series is brilliant because we get a full circle of every main characters.
Anyway, there is still one character that I want to know more, Ciara... I know that her story would be in a new series and I can't wait to read it!
It's always a sad day as a series is coming to end, especially when the author gives us a family of characters we have all come to love, intertwined throughtout the series. This installment gives us Hamish and Afton's story, one of unrequited lost love, second chances, and a meddling tween.
Afton feels the need to return home if for nothing else but closure. Especially since she had gotten a glimpse that her selfish behaviour just might have worked out for everyone involved. She's done some growing up and finding dreams while she was away. Maybe they will work to her advantage when she gets home.
To say Hamish is struggling is a bit of a understatement, but he certainly won't ask for more help from his family or friends. Learning to navigate the single dad gig for Freya, all while starting a new family law business, and renovating the old farm house. One thing is for certain, he doesn't regret the divorce and has a new perspective on life.
Could it be that the stars have aligned for Afton and Hamish. I mean no 300 year old marriage pact, Hamish is single and it is quick to see the hidden feelings are clearly still there. Can Afton find a reason to stay and make her dreams come true in a place she once loved?

5 Star Review Single Dad In A Kilt (Kilted Hearts #5) by Kait Nolan
I have been waiting for this story for what seems like forever. From the first book I have wanted single dad Hamish Colquhoun and Afton Lennox story and it was worth the wait. I was captivated by the story that Kait Nolan wove from the first chapter to the last
Single Dad In A Kilt was everything I was hoping for and so much more as Hamish and his daughter Freya return to their home town and the friends they love. It was an entertaining, well written read that ticked all the boxes for me. It was wonderful being in, Scotland for one of my favourite series.
Afton has finally returned home after nearly 2 years to face her family and friends after fleeing in the dark. Will they forgive her? Arriving in the middle of Connor and Sophie’s wedding, everyone is shocked, particularly Hamish who has struggled with the feelings he has for his best friend’s sister for years.
Of course, everyone is invested in the relationship blossoming between Hamish and Afton and they all have an opinion which added an extra layer to the story.
Could Hamish and Afton finally have the love that they both deserve and in taking a leap of faith finally found the happiness that has eluded them both?
This is the story I’ve been waiting for! Since the beginning of the series, Hamish was the man I was most intrigued with. In love with his friend, who was engaged through a marriage pact with Hamish’s best mate…and Hamish being married himself…is what romance books are made of. And meeting both he and Afton in the prequel, but waiting through 4 additional books Has. Been. Agony, lol. While I’ve adored all the previous HEAs, friends to lovers has always been my favorite trope, and before all else, Afton and Hamish are friends first. So when she comes back to their hometown of Glenaig, right after Hamish and daughter, Freya, have returned, it’s kismet. And of course, Freta needs a nanny…yet another favorite trope. It’s like Kait Nolan looked at my virtual library shelf and wrote this book just for me. I didn’t just love Afton and Hamish. I was tickled with her relationship with young Freya as well. Not to mention how seamlessly Afton has been welcomed back, despite the jilting. Because everyone is with who they should be with. And that is what makes not only the “Kilt” series a winner, but every series that is born from the pen of Ms. Nolan. Having read them all, I think I know what I’m taking about. Hamish and Afton win best couple and best romance with Single Dad in a Kilt,
