Wish: A Male/Male Westbrook Elite Standalone Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 1,139 ratings

For me, choice might as well be a wish.
My parents died in a fiery car crash when I was barely sixteen.
I’m gay.
I’m also totally in love with my brother.
I didn’t choose any of that. In fact, I’ve tried like hell to deny it. But here I am in all my gay, brother-loving, no-parentals glory.
Technically, Max isn’t my brother. Not by blood anyway. That should make it less ick, right?
Considering he calls my parents mom and dad, probably not.
Also, did I mention he’s straight?
So that’s me: the freestyle swimmer doing my best to keep my sexuality on the down-low while simultaneously wishing my feelings for Max will evaporate into thin air.
Too bad he acts like he’s my keeper and my heart shakes every time his eyebrow ring glints in the sun or he levels his opaque stare on me with an intensity matched by nothing else.
My desire to keep my personal life personal drowns at the bottom of the pool when a fellow Elite lets everyone in on my business, which throws Max into macho protective mode all over again.
Enough is enough, though. I’m forcing myself to move on.
Maybe the best way to forget about my forbidden crush is to find a new one.
I have options. More than I realized.
Unfortunately, none of them are leather-wearing, tattoo-sporting, motorcycle-riding grumpholes.
So here I am wishing for Max while someone else wishes for me.
Someone who decides if they can’t have me…
No one will.

Please note that WISH contains homophobia. There is also mention of off-page child abuse and parental death. This book also contains a male/male sibling-esque relationship and mentions of male assault. Some readers may find these things uncomfortable.

Years of resolve. Deathbed promises. Sacrifice and pain.

One moment of weakness.

One moment to shatter literally everything I’d fought so hard for.

So you tell me: How will I live without him now that I know just how unequivocally essential he is to my soul?

I won’t.

That single moment of sweet surrender sentenced me to a lifetime of mere survival, unable to live without all of him but refusing to die because death would mean leaving his side.

Cambria Hebert is a bestselling novelist of more than fifty titles. She went to college for a bachelor’s degree, couldn’t pick a major, and ended up with a degree in cosmetology. So rest assured her characters will always have good hair.

Bro! Another wonderful story in the Westbrook Elite series
I have been impatiently waiting for Wes and Max to get their story since they appeared in book 1 Wet and let me tell you it was well worth the wait!Max and Wes were just meant to be together ❤ The road was definitely not an easy one for either of them. They have to fight through loss, hate, internal battles, and a stalker! This story was filled with more angst than I was prepared for but I'm definitely here for it.I love that Max will do whatever it takes to protect and keep his family together. Wes is such a sweetheart. I absolutely loved the push and pull between them leading up to that first kiss. I really enjoyed getting some of the interactions between them earlier in their lives. Plus we get the introduction to Win, the brother to Wes and best friend of Max. Cambria I can't wait for his story.Max and Wes have so many moments that will pull at your heartstrings but I won't give them all away. That's the best part of a story like this is going through it all with them for the first time.Go ahead and grab all these wonderful Westbrook Elite swimmers you won't be disappointed. The family just keeps growing and I can't wait to see what happens next. I also need to know more about Prism! You get it all in this book.RomanceAngstOver protective boyfriendSexy SwimmersBROmanceSuspenseSteamy scenesFound FamilyI laughed, cried and sometimes wasn't quite sure what to feel but loved every minute of this book.

Max is Wes’s unofficially adopted brother and his other brother Win’s best friend. So having more than brotherly feelings for Max is complicated. Even more so for Max whose family was so abusive Wes and Win’s parents fought his for custody. Wanting Wes feels like a betrayal of the trust their mom and dad put in him, but the pull to be with Wes keeps getting stronger, as does the yearning in Wes’s eyes.

“But I could never be afraid of the dark because Max stepped out of it so many times. I just thought he might need it when he snuck in at night.”

“When he came out, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. About him. My first thought when he confessed to me and Win about his preference? So there’s a chance. Not surprise. Not support. Not even disgust… Hope.”

This book had me feeling so many emotions! I got teary-eyed multiple times. Even though in real life it is not healthy or attractive, there is something about super possessive, co-dependent relationships in romance novels that is so addictive. I guess it’s the intensity of the emotions, the feeling that this love is epic. Max and Wes definitely have that kind of a bond—a connection formed in childhood that almost had no other choice than to grow into romantic love. I just love the bit about the nightlight and what it represented. And how even as a child Max sought out Wes for comfort. And even with Max’s violent, abusive childhood leaving him with anger management issues Wes is never afraid of Max. Max’s darkness holds no fear for Wes. And the way that Wes and Win’s parents gave Max the unconditional love his own parents were incapable of makes the conflicts and obstacles that Max, especially, feels so natural and understandable. Wes may not think so, but Max was right to give Wes time. Wes’s own traumas left him with issues he needed to get a handle on, and Max gave hime time and space to do that (well, a little space anyway). In fact, in a weird way, Wes’s hurt feeling about Max not acting on his feelings sooner is part of how Wes learns to put himself out there and make new friends and stand up for himself. So that when he and Max come together in the end they are more equals than they would otherwise have been.

If I have any criticism it’s that the steamy scenes go on a little too long—they are emotionally relevant, but just a little long. Also, I’m not really sure the stalker subplot was necessary, or the homophobic teammate. I mean if you removed them from the book, I think you still have a story. I don’t want to spoil anything but I will say a good point is made about how men can be victims too.

I adore Wes’s friends—Jamie, Ryan, Madison, and Rory—they are so much fun and so supportive and loving. Bro, one of the times I got teary was because of these guys! I will definitely be reading WTF because I need more of Win, Wes, Max, and the Elite swimmers.

The first MM Romance I ever read was a Cambria novel, so I knew that I would like the way she wrote this MM Romance. I have been looking forward to Wes' story since we first met him in Wet (Westbrook #1). Wes is reserved, quietly out, and apprehensive of new people after suffering intense trauma when he first came out. His story is truly heartbreaking and unfortunately so real to many.

For the longest time, Wes has been crushing on his brother's best friend and is pseudo-brother, Max. Max is older, mysterious, dark, and a possessive protective alpha especially where Wes is concerned. Tasked with watching over Wes while his brother is overseas, Max is overbearing and infuriating to Wes.

The tension in this book is SO good! When these two break, they go off like fireworks and we are on the winning end of some fantastic steamy scenes and raw passion. The love and affection between these two is equally as pure and sweet. You cannot help but fall in love with both Wes and Max, and them as a couple. The character development and overcoming of mutual trauma was so special. The healing in this book is incredible and a favorite of mine. Cambria handled these tough topics with a care and honesty that they deserve.

I love Cambria Hebert. I am a huge fan of her #Nerd and Gear Shark series and Westbrook Elite is definitely in the same caliber. In Wish, Hebert is once again showing how talented she is as writing New Adult MM romance. This book has everything the romance lovers want - pining, yearning, desperation, chemistry, passion. It is all there. I can't find enough good words for this book but it is definitely on par with Gear Shark and for me that is a huge call. I highly recommend this book and I can't wait for the next one.

Just a couple days into 2023 and I know this is going to be a year of amazing reads. This was an M/M story that I didn’t see coming. While I’ve started venturing out and trying things outside my comfort zone, I didn’t think Wes and Max would capture me the way they did.

I was very curious of these characters as you meet them in Wet and Wingspan but i didn’t think I’d get as emotional as I did.

Wes has gone through his fair share of heartache from losing his parents at a young age and having a really bad experience when he came out to his friends at the age of 16.

Three years have passed and now he is an Elite Swimmer who tries to keep to himself. The key word here being tries because he was no match for Ryan and Jamie. They recognize him as a fellow “bro” and consistently show that they have his back.

Max comes in all hot and broody and I was here for it. He is the definition of “he hates everyone but him”. He refuses to take chances when it comes to Wes’ safety. While it would annoy most people, Wes soaks up the attention because he has loved Max for as long as he can remember.

The problem is, Max is his brothers best friend.

To say that these characters go through some trying situations is an understatement. Their story was fast paced, suspenseful, hilarious and filled with so much angst (with a side of praise kink 😏) I loved how the past characters are still present in this book and how newer characters are beginning to shine. Mr. Win, I can’t wait to learn more about you.

I’ll end this review with one of my favourite quotes

Wes - “ I was not a boy. I wasn’t even good. but I want to be his good boy.”

This is my first M/M book. I wasn't sure about reading it at first as it wasn't something I thought I was interested in, but I had to read it. Wes was such a big character in the other stories in the series. I had to read the story, and I was not disappointed, not even a little bit.
This author knows how to write the drama! This friend group goes through so much together. Maxi and Nemo have been through so much throughout their lives together. They just make sense. They are meant to be from the beginning. I love that Win is the greatest brother and best friend ever when it comes to their relationship.
I can't wait to read the next M/M story now.
