One week. No strings. Sexy stranger. What could go wrong?
My name is Julia McDowell. I’m not the pretty girl next door, I’m the boss at work who solves all your problems. I’m an awkward genius with the worst taste in boyfriends; the last one left me with a 6-figure debt to prove it.
So, when the most swoon-worthy man alive saves me from a psychotic tree, who am I to say no to a drink? He’s sweet yet powerful with a darkness I can’t place. I should be terrified of him, but I find myself drawn to him in ways I’ve never experienced. He says I’m his guiding light, that our hearts beat to the same melody. But I’m not looking for forever, and he has his own demons to slay.
We agreed to one week, no strings. It will have to be enough. It’s definitely enough, more than enough, until it’s not.
I’m ready to throw our one-week rules out the window when tragedy pulls us apart. It would take a miracle to find our way back to each other, and life is no fairytale. With no happily ever after in sight, will our hearts learn a new rhythm? Or will heartache become our new theme song?
Avery Maxwell is an American contemporary romance novelist specializing in emotionally driven characters who bring love, chaos, heat, and a side of angst to every story she writes. She grew up in a tiny Vermont town with one flashing light and four stop signs. If you look closely enough, you can often find similarities between her small hometown and the stories she creates.
Avery now lives in North Carolina with her husband, four mini-humans, and two puppies. She fills her days with carpools and sporting events while using her nights to create stories that are impossible to put down.
When Avery isn’t on mom-duty or busy writing, you can find her at a concert or snuggling on the couch with a glass of wine and her very own Prince Charming.
We all have a book soulmate...have you found yours yet?
I was so excited for Trevor and Julia's story after finishing the previous book in this series and I had to get my hands on this one right away. But I ended up a little disappointed with it since there were a lot of scenes that we had already seen in Book 1. It's necessary so that readers of this book can get the full picture of these characters but it felt like a little much and made parts feel like they were dragging. Especially since it took the majority of the beginning to even get to where the last book left off. I did enjoy seeing the characters together and I love the group of characters as friends so I'm still excited to read more from this author.
What a rush! We’re everywhere in this book, folks. We get Julia and Trevor pre-Lanie-and-Dex, we get more of Loki’s mind and machinations, we get more dark than I’d expected (but not pitch black dark, just some deep shadows), and we get the wind knocked out of our sails by Lexi and Preston.
I know that this is Julia and Trevor’s story, but I truly enjoyed as much of Loki as we got. Otherwise, we may not understand what exactly is coming this group’s way or why. Loki has his hand in so many things, it’s a wonder he can keep himself together, much less anyone else! Trevor knows enough to lose the woman of his dreams, but Loki also hands that woman back to him on a silver platter. Then it’s all on Julia to convince Trevor that they’re as perfect for each other as they seem, despite everything swirling around them.
At this point, I can’t wait for what comes next. I need to know more about Loki and Lexi and Preston and even Ash. This was so well done that the 15 different possibilities for everyone’s future only left me wanting more. I’m impressed that this author is able to throw so much at the reader without it feeling like OTT drama or information overload, and I’m totally ready to continue this ride!
As seen on my blog (Jessie's Reading Corner): I found myself this week diving back into the world of Avery’s Westbrooks series, Broken Hearts, with Beat of My Heart, Julia and Trevor’s story. While the majority of the book takes place before the events of Cross My Heart (book 1 in the series), I really enjoyed how Avery had some of the storyline run parallel with Cross My Heart, but from Julia and Trevor’s perspective.
I’ve bounced around between Avery’s two series set in this world, but I think Beat of My Heart is my favorite (so far) in the Broken Hearts series and ties with One Little Kiss, my favorite in the Family Ties series.
Julia and Trevor meet at a conference in Boston. While there’s an instant attraction between the two, both have stuff going on in their personal lives that they don’t want to bring the other into; so they agree to a one-night stand. One night ends up turning into a full week affair because they’re both falling for each other and want to spend any chance they can with each other.
I loved watching their relationship and feelings develop during their time together. Julia was a riot, with her inner-turned-outward monologues and coming up with her own lyrics, and I loved how Trevor understood her and calmed her chaos. Trevor broke my heart in this. He really was between a rock and a hard place with everything he was dealing with and I loved how Julia was able to bring light into his darkness.
Having read Cross My Heart, I knew where their affair was headed, but it was still hard to read about their separation. Like I said, I loved how this part of the story ran parallel with the events of Cross My Heart while being from Julia and Trevor’s perspective. Since we already got Lanie and Dex’s story, Julia and Trevor’s story only highlighted parts of that story while also providing some more scenes between just the two of them (like when they’re texting and sending each other GIFS 😂)
I thought their reunion and the ending of their story was perfect, while also leaving me in some suspense about what is in store for the other characters (particularly Loki, Preston, Lexi and Ashton) and I can’t wait to read their stories! Out of the four, Ashton’s is the only one that doesn’t have his story written yet but Avery’s planning on releasing it later this year!
GG was, once again, a hoot and I loved reuniting with Lanie, Dex and the rest of the Westbrooks that I did not mention earlier.
I definitely recommend this book/series to anyone who enjoys a steamy small town romance with a hint of suspense. While this book is second in the series and the books are interconnected, it can be read as a standalone. I do think you might benefit though from reading Cross My Heart first (or after this one) because, again, Lanie and Dex’s story runs parallel with Trevor and Julia’s and you’ll get a better understanding of all the characters and some of the events that take place.
This was a great spin on a one night stand, baby he didn't know about, millionaire alpha story. Then add in Julia's quirks, the amazing band of friends with secrets, the mafia, a kidnapping, and some of the best family I've read and this was another one I couldn't put down.
What knocked the stars down a little for me was too much of the first book being repeated in this one. If I hadn't just finished the first book it probably wouldn't have bothered me and if it had been a long time separating the two I would have loved it as a way to help me remember the story but alas it was a little repetitious for me.
I will continue though. Preston and Loki are still drawing me in!
I genuinely can not believe how high these books are rated on here lol
The problem with the books is that they’re a let down. All of them in the series. There’s like one scene in the prior book for each couple to make you super interested in the couple but then you read the book and their relationship is just blah. There’s nothing there.
This book had literally like 240 pages as “part 1” where you literally had to go back in time and re read the same plot line from these characters POV after you already read it in the characters in book 1 POV. I don’t like reading the same stuff. All of that should have been condensed into 1 chapter as a prologue. But instead there was a prologue and then part one that was over half the book. That wasn’t their relationship? This book should have focused on them rebuilding their relationship after that but nope, there was barely any time for that in here.
I’ve learned my lesson with this series and will not be reading the next book.

So, I must say that I was really looking forward to read about Trevor's and Julia's story since I've finished the first book of this awesome Broken Hearts series, "Cross My Heart", that give's us the lovely love story between Dex and Lanie, that I also loved to read. Avery Maxwell gives us the most impressive characters. Each one of them are a must know person. Trevor, Julia, Dex, Lanie, Loki, Preston and all the rest of the people that gives us so much tender and positive vibes. I really would love to be a part of this big and awesome chosen family. Trevor's and Julia's story comes way back, even first then Dex and Lanie's love. They've met under some circumstances that were, at least, hilarious. Julia has the most funny and crazy way to express all her feelings and, with her, we can always tell what she's thinking because she, literally, says it out loud for everyone to hear. i guess that this was one of the most important virtue that made Trevor to love her. With Julia I've had so much fun and real released so many laughters because of her that it made me belly aches (lol). She could really be my puffin (when you read the book you'll understand what i mean). She is absolutely something else and only Trevor could be her one and only. Trevor is a caring and loving man that comes a long way of loneliness and fear since his mother died, and to have known someone like Julia, it literally blew his mind and heart away. Since he met Julia he would never be the same. Although this book is about these two characters, I think that it also served to explain us more of Loki. Since he is someone who always maintain his life as secret as he can from his friends. Now we know why he does that, and I must say that, if I already liked Dex's friends and family, after this book I really love them. I could tell you so much more of what I've read, but it would always be little to make you realize how much I liked this all "universe" of family love and safety. This book has much more action than the first one, since we have, as I said, a bigger inside of Loki's life that grants this story more danger and more sense of "must protect". He will, for sure, do everything and beyond to secure all the people that are his chosen family and that he truly loves. I must say that i'm really also looking forward to read more of Loki and also Preston. They really are major important characters and this all series would not be the same without them. Please, may the third book comes out soon!!
4.5 I read book one in the beautiful series and loved Dexters story but the second I put together just “who” Trevor was I knew I needed this book and WOW his book exceeded my expectations!
It was a little bit longer then I expected but it was worth it because the plot thickens. I know that as this series and the stories of this amazing group grow each book is going to be packed with surprises.
Trevor and Jules have off the charts chemistry and some super steamy moments that being a smile to your face 😉 ! I just can’t wait to see how it all plays out!
So this series was originally the “Waverley-Cay” novel but I see the series has changed to “A Broken Hearts” novel. This book can be read as a stand alone but these characters and their stories intertwine so much I suggest reading both books.
I loved Trevor and Julia’s story. What I think hyped me up so much is the ending of the last book. I was ready!! This has been a long time coming.
The beginning of the book is hilarious. Not that the rest isn’t but I was laughing out loud a ton! I love the throwback it sets the scene so well. Then the middle was more of a retelling and this is especially important if you didn’t read book one. But it also gave us a chance to check out the text messages which I though were some of the funniest things from book one. The end was beautiful bliss. I shed tears. I was so in-love with these two by the end I was crying over everything.
Julia is her own woman and she had no problem standing up and taking care of her and her loved ones. Trevor is a stand up guy with shit for a father. He has to hide his past to protect his future. Problem is they begin to collide. It was definitely intense at one point. I think Loki really drove me crazy. He had me so worried and now I want his story!!
This is a perfect afternoon read. You get a little bit of everything.
**I beta read for this author and this is my honest review*+
I loved this book more than I did Avery's first book. I know that is hard to believe but it is true.
Trevor and Julia's story is beautifully told. We get to see how it all starts for them. Learn about what happens during the course of book 1, Cross My Heart, without feeling like it is a summary. We get to see what happens with them and not so much what those of us who read book 1 already know. Then we get to find out how it all ends. There are a lot of moments where you are on edge, in a good way of course.
If you like a book that keeps you guessing, with solid characters all the way around, then you need to read this book. Avery has once again proven she is an author worth reading. I cannot wait to read her next book to read all about what happens next.
this would’ve been a good book if it had started where the last one left off but i was just bored and it didn’t even feel like the book centred on the couple it was about
I was super excited for Trevor and Julia's story. A one night stand week, two lost souls who can't find each other and a second chance to have it all. But will the obstacles of their past stop them from the second chance at happiness they both deserve?
Since loosing his mother many years ago, Trevor has decided that he picks his family and the people that are important to him. A wonderful man who is always their for his friends the best way he can. Doing what he can to bring down the people that have altered his life so drastically.
Julia is a beautiful and smart woman who has been used in the past. She is cautious with her emotions and sharing them. This small town girl gets a little bit in her head sometimes and her filters are almost non existent but that is part of her charm.
Though I enjoyed the story, I felt the middle dragged on a little bit with parts that series readers have already known. I understand it is hard when the books overlap like these two do. I wish we had have had a little more on the couple after reconnection, as this part felt a little rushed to the end for me. It was great to get a bit more of some secondary characters and I am excited for what is to come next.

I was so looking forward to Trevor and Julia's story. And for the most part I really enjoyed it. Just felt like some parts were a bit overkill, the middle part of the book was a bit too much. And then the last part was a bit rushed for me. Trevor and Julia had a one night stand, but Julia never got his real name and then her friend was attacked and she left without getting real name or phone numbers. Now its like fate stepped in and Julia's best friend got together with Trevor's best friend. And that's how they reconnected. But things aren't as easy as getting back together. Both of these characters have their own issues and their own pasts that can threaten their present. So will they be able to overcome all their obstacles??
I am really enjoying this authors books. I loved the first story, this one was a bit much the past could have been cut down a bit but all in all loved it. I am anxious for the friends story
A dull and boring business conference turns into so much more when Trevor and Julia throw caution to the wind and decide on a no attachment, no strings week filled with lust and excitement. When a tragedy breaks up their time together, the two are likely never to meet up again. But fate is cruel and the two are thrown together once again. Can they reunite once secrets are revealed? Will happiness be in their cards? With emotion that just drips off of every page and two characters that the reader has been routing for since they first appeared this was an amazing story. Avery Maxwell has a special way of not only making the key characters storyline shine but also keeping the other character's lives simmering on low in the background. I cannot get enough of these men!!
“My heart stopped beating the moment I lost you and didn’t start again until just now.”
WHAT A WHIRLWIND OF A BOOK! My mind is still reeling over this. Beat of My Heart is book 2 of The Westbrooks series. While it says it can be read as a stand-alone, I think you’d understand more by reading in order. But, since Trevor and Julia’s story overlaps Dex & Lanie’s, there is repetitive scenes.
What I thought was going to be a romance, turned into a suspense romance that kept me at the edge of my seat! I’m glad I already have book 3 downloaded because I have to find out what’s going on with The Westbrooks.
Read if you enjoy: • One Night Stand • Accidental Pregnancy • Second Chance • Found Family
I thoroughly enjoyed Trevor and Julia's story. Julia is an independent, strong woman, who stands up for herself and those she loves. Trevor is a great guy with a heart of gold, but a shitty past. After a one night stand, Julia and Trevor part ways not having gotten each other's name, when their friends get together they reconnect, but things aren't easy.
These are well developed complicated characters with complicated pasts and feelings. Overall, the book was good, however, there were parts that seemed a bit lacking.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The agreement: One week, no real names, no strings attached. What could go wrong? Genius, Julia McDowell is my absolute favorite awkward heroine of all time! Her inner monologue being spewed for all within earshot to hear had me cringing and dying of laughter at the same time. I seriously love this woman! Trevor Knight is a very complex character. He is a wonderful friend, a successful businessman, a misguided soul looking for his light, and he is everything you could want in a book boyfriend. Trevor and Julia deserved their HEA. The meddling friends and eccentric GG were fabulous bonuses to this storyline.
I was excited to read Trevor and Jule's story after I finished the first book in this series. I think the biggest problem I had with this book is that there was just too much of the book that was included in the previous book and too much of the "before".
I thought the story was good, and it was built as a bit of a romantic suspense, but I wanted more suspense. I enjoyed seeing the characters together, getting to know the other men in the group of friends and the found family in all of this. It's a fun and interesting series so far and I look forward to seeing where it goes.
Read if you like: second chance romance, one-night stand baby
While I loved this book it was a bit slow in the beginning. An unforgettable one night stand, and years later they come face to face. This is the point where the story really grabs hold of the reader. The story that develops between Julia and Trevor is wonderful and the underlying story that weaves this series together will keep you coming back for the next book.
This book had it all! Accidental pregnancy, secret baby, scandal, mob-adjacent, secretive characters, everything! There were so many twists and turns in this book, and I loved the whole ride! My first time reading from this author but I think I want to continue on to the next book in the series!
I loved seeing how Trevor and Julia’s story played out concurrently with Laine and Dex’s. I do miss the group texting though. I really enjoyed that in the first book. Can’t wait for Preston’s book but I really want Loki’s story so I hope we get that soon too.
I am glad that I continued on with this story after being on the fence after the first book. There was just something about the characters and the mystery that wasn't fully solved that had me wanting answers. I still don't have the answers but I'm still invested. This book didn't feel as choppy as the first book which I'm glad for.
I know Preston is the next book but I'm not going to lie and say that I'm not highly interested in Link's book. I hope that is coming
sigh........ i don’t even know what to say. this is the most confusing series i’ve ever read. i genuinely have no idea what is going on with the mafia stuff but oh well i’m in too deep now... onto the next one.
After reading Cross My Heart I knew I had to find out Julia's story and was so excited to read this! We get so much history in this story and not just about Julia and Trevor. I loved the peeks into the past and how awesomely awkward Julia can be and the link with Trevor and Loki. Sorry I'm babbling, it was just so stinkin good! The immediate chemistry then all the heart ache, this book has all the feels. I adore the Westbrook brothers and hope to see so much more of them in the future. Another amazingly beautiful book!
The only thing i didn't like about this book was that about 30% of the content was from the 1 st book. I didn't like that author included exact phrases and pages of texts from first book, a small description or a summary would have been sufficient.
I didn’t think it could get better than the first but this book is amazing. It made me laugh, cry and smile all the way through. The connection that everyone has with the chosen families is beautifully written. I cannot wait to start the next book in this series.
Beat of My Heart is book two of the Broken Hearts series by Avery Maxwell. This is a little bit second chance romance, a little bit missed connection, and a little bit one-night-stand turns into surprise baby. I highly recommend reading book one in this series first to get a little more backstory for this couple. Julia and Trevor have a one-night-stand that turns to a vacation fling with a side of instalove, that gets interrupted by tragedy. They spend two years lost and unsure how to move on or find each other again. This story has plenty of heat, drama and suspense, and a beautiful love story. Besides the story of Julia and Trevor you also get to see such great friendships in this group and the lengths they all go to to take care of each other. Which of course means that once you finish this story you will definitely want to finish the series.
