Okay I am shamed to say this is the first book I have read by this author, it a 100% won’t be the last that’s for sure. This book is freakin’ phenomenal! There is something so dangerously enchanting about this book, I was hooked and crooked from the very start!

Our two leads are Agatha and Erxy. When they first met, under circumstances that are terrifying situation for Agatha their chemistry is undeniable and strongly sizzling already! Every single moment they are together is so explosive and captivating for one reason or another.
They understand each other on a whole other level, their connection is so deep and souls encountering.

Agatha has been dealt one of the worst most devastating hands, life could give. Now she has no family left, has been beat down, tortured, kidnapped and still she has her fighting sprite. She may be down but Agatha is definitely not to be counted out. She is strong, feisty, and after all she has been through she is still able to see the goodness in some people.
She is willing to do whatever it takes for her freedom.. even if that means hurting the one she thought she could trust. Even if she will be half a person when she finally does get out she will do it. I loved her personality and strength so much!

Erxy *feeeew* how do you even put him into words!
Hot, possessive, protective, broken, dangerous, deadly to name a few haha 😆 I could go on and on about this dangerously mysterious man. He is surrounded in darkness, his past, his present and what he thinks will most likely be his future too. He tried to break free from his past once, only to be pulled back in.
He and another are paid to do a job, one he has done many times before for a lot less and it has never bothered him. So why does it now? Why does this woman affect him so much?

So many questions.. so many twists and turns.
In the darkness it’s easier to see the light but is there any light left for either of them to find and in the Magdalene of all places!

I loved this book SO F’ing much.
Please read trigger warnings. If you like it dark and dangerous jump right in in. I highly recommend.

    3.5-⭐️ 3.5-🌶️
    Okayyyyyy guys,
This was my first book by her and let me say. LOVE.
I wouldn’t say this is a slow burn but the heat comes and when it does oooooo Lordy it’s delectable!!
This was very much a lighter dark romance (for me) but still enjoyed it so much, there was a few twists I didn’t see coming, but it really tied it together.
The Magdalene is a dark evil place and Agatha is just trying to escape while dealing with the weight of her past.
Eryx is ready to ruin her, but can he resist her?

I’m excited to read more from Shanjida

3.0 out of 5 stars El libro es malo malo malo

4.0 out of 5 stars a deliciously dark gothic romance.

“the devil tainted us” is ms. ali’s book introduction into the gothic romance genre and man did she take me by surprise. had me in choke hold actually, haha. this book was dark, sinful, and taboo filled with mystery, betrayal, religious cults, and twists.

this book also touches on topics regarding religion and mental illness. how the world views these two topics is a focal point in the story and can be very heavy. amongst other heavy topics, so please read the trigger warnings.

we’re introduced to father eryx, a dark, cold man with secrets, a traumatic and horrific past. also the asylum’s doctor to help treat and cure the patients brought to them. but not everything is as it seems. then we meet agatha, who’s life, at first, was beautiful and full of love. but things started to change after meeting her brother-in-law, and her life proceeded to spiral down due to events which led her to the ‘mery heights’.

these two were drawn to each other, no matter the resistance. the chemistry between agatha and father eryx is intense and deliciously dark. and let me tell you, the spice in this book? was balanced, just the right amount. and let me tell you, that scene? THAT scene?? yeah. my jaw was on the floor. did i enjoy it? absolutely. haha.

depsite father eryx’s constant internal battle with himself on what he’s supposed to do and what he wants to do, in the end, he does what he knows is right. his loyalty is truly unmatched, especially when you learn why he did what he did, and continued to do so.

this book had me at “gothic romance,” then proceeded to pique my interest. “the devil tainted us” consumed from beginning to end; i read this in a day. the plot and setting was great, along with great character development. this is also my book introduction to shanjida, and it will not be the last.

I enjoyed the premise of this book, it was full of mystery, suspense, darkness and, of course, love.

The chemistry and attraction between the FMC and MMC was instantaneous. Both are stuck within their own prison and require one another to escape the darkness holding them captive. Their love is forbidden on many levels and although they should be kept apart, they find their way to one another time and time again. The climax was explosive, full of action, betrayal, and you could feel yourself tensing with each additional revelation.

The book didn’t just end after the climax, more was revealed and wrapped up before the HEA. At some points it didn’t feel like there would be one but they eventually made it.

This is the author’s first gothic romance novel and I hope it isn’t her last.
