Oh. My. God. I am seriously speechless. This novella has me so hooked and I want it to be 2018 already. Screw Christmas!!
The dedication was amazing and I knew it set up a good start to the story.

‘To anyone, man or woman, who has loved someone so much that you lost parts of yourself. Remember you have to love yourself first, the rest just falls into place... you’re worthy of love and kindness, quirks and all.’

I started off liking Parker. But as the story went on, I began to dislike him more and more.

‘He lied. Again. Just like the last four deployments that he volunteered for, he was leaving me behind.’

The cliffhanger though! I saw it coming but it still did not make it any less of an ending. I just want the next book so I can have my answer! This was such a good read. I cannot recommend it enough.

When We Were Young by Gen Ryan is the first book in her Hopelessly Devoted series. It is a heart wrenching emotional story that sucked me in and held me captivated all the way through.

Rainey has put everything into her marriage. Married young she is sure that everything will work out how she wants it to if she tries hard enough.
But not everything goes as planned. When her carefully constructed life starts falling apart she knows it is time to re-evaluate what she wants and how to achieve it.
And then she meets Levi, who shows her a whole new way of living, one she didn’t expect. But things still might not be as smooth as it seems.

This book pulled at my heartstrings from the moment Parker walked through the door and spoke to Rainey. The ups and downs throughout the book kept me hooked and on edge. I loved the complex story line and the process Rainey went through on her journey of self-discovery. A very well written book with great pace, I thoroughly enjoyed this and am looking forward to reading what else is to come from this series.

    When We Were Young
    By Gen Ryan
    5 stars

There were so many emotions I encountered whilst reading this book. I laughed, I cried, I swooned and I cried some more! This is the first book that I have read by this author and I can’t believe I have missed out on her books before! As soon as I read the blurb for this book I knew I would love it and I did – I didn’t put it down once! And then I got to the end and saw the words I was fearing – ‘to be continued’ I really hope that the author doesn’t make us wait too long to find out what happens between Rainey, Levi and Parker! I also really hope she writes what I want too!!
I loved Rainey, I thought that she was such a genuinely lovely person. She was loyal and tried everything she could to make her marriage to Parker work during his time in the military. She loved her job and that shone through so much during the story.
Parker, was a funny characters for me, I did like him and I think that he clearly has more to come in the next story. I really felt for him during some parts of the story.
I fell in love with Levi straight away! He was such a wonderful character; he was calm and patient with Rainey and was there for her when she needed a shoulder to cry on.
A beautifully written story that I loved every single second of. I cannot wait for the next book in the series! I desperately want to know what Rainey is going to do!!

When we were young by Gen Ryan is different to the other books I’ve read by this author. This is less of a crime story, more of a love story. Gen always touches on some form of mental illness in her books which I really like as it is something I battle with and she doesn’t make light of it, simply addresses it as an everyday thing. This time her novel deals with PTSD and how it affects different people in different ways. Also how it is also the family members of the soldiers who suffer. I really enjoyed this book. Gen writes great, deep characters and gives them a good history so we can empathise with them. Her books make me laugh, cry and have plenty of suspense. I am so pleased I discovered this author.
I liked the main character Rainey and the contrast between her husband, Parker and new admirer Levi. Rainey and Parker married young and he joined the military as a way to escape a difficult childhood but it brought its own difficulties and in the book we see the results of this. I liked that Rainey was a loyal wife who put others before herself but I was happy when she started to get noticed for her too. It is unusual for an author to warn us that the ending is a cliff hanger but she does and I’m glad she did! Just as I felt I was getting into the story it was over! I can’t wait for volume 2 in the series.

When We Were Young (Hopelessly Devoted Book 1)
    By: Gen Ryan
    5 out of 5 stars

The story When We Were Young (Hopelessly Devoted Book 1) by Gen Ryan is a military/contemporary romance book. This is a book that was very emotional to read. It was both heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. It is the story of a woman that is finding that her hopes, dreams and the man that she first fell in love with all slipping away. It has a lot to do with his PTSD and the way that he is dealing with it, or how he is really ignoring it, I love the character of Rainey. She is a wonderful woman who has a career as an ER nurse and had plans for the future. Every year those plans and her dreams seem to slip further away. She is faced with the decision to move on or to stay and hope for the best. It is very sad to read about how Rainey feels and all that she is going through. I had a lot to empathy for her and all throughout the book I wanted her to be able to find happiness in her life. As the story progresses, Rainey soon finds a light through all of the darkness. Even though her life is full of struggles she has that ray of hope put before her that she begins to believe in. This is a story that had my emotions all over the place. There are times when I would have a smile on my face and others when I would have tears in my eyes. I couldn’t help but be affected by Rainey’s story. It is a book that I didn’t want to put down until I had read the final page. This is an author who has created a story that touched my heart and a character, Rainey, that I loved and cared what happened to her. This is a story that does end in a cliffhanger. I can’t wait to read the next book.

This book wrecked me in all the right ways. Right now, I'm still not loving Parker even after how the book ends. Obviously, I need not want to know what happens in book 2. Rainey deserves better and I think Levi is it, but we'll see in February if our MC agrees...
