Out of Goodbyes is the second book in Gen Ryan’s Hopelessly Devoted series. It picks up immediately after When We Were Young with Parker showing up on Rainey’s doorstep to beg for another chance. Ms. Ryan is an excellent writer who uses alternating points of view to take the reader inside the head of her characters. When We Were Young is Rainey deciding what is the best decision to go back to Parker or more forward with Levi.

Rainey put her heart and soul into her marriage with Parker. Parker, however, didn’t give her the love she needed and, often didn’t show her the respect she deserved. The final straw is the way he broke up with her is so cowardly and hurtful. The character of Rainey is beautifully crafted. She doesn’t know her own strength. She spends most of her married life as the backbone of the relationship. She fights hard for her husband and herself. After Parker went on his last deployment, Rainey looks for ways to be happy without Parker as her center.

Levi knows about cheating spouses and has a lot of baggage too. He must figure out how to love Rainey while giving her room to come to grips with her feelings for Parker. Rainey also needs to deal with her depression, a disorder that has dictated her life for a long time. Levi is a strong character too. He is in a lot of pain after his divorce. He didn’t know if he wants another relationship, but Rainey is an exceptional woman. Is it possible that Rainey could give him a future? In Out of Goodbyes, Levi deals with his past and Rainey finds that she must be happy with herself before she can be with someone else and be what they need.

Taking a step back to When We Were Young; when I closed the book, I said to myself that I didn’t know what direction I wanted the story to travel. There are pros and cons for both Levi and Parker, in my opinion. However, over the couple months that I waited for Out of Goodbye , I did pray that Gen would consider forgiveness and healing for Parker. It is apparent that he is in pain and didn’t know how to handle his pain from his past, PTSD, and sharing with Rainey. Levi, on the other hand, is in a better place and knows how to love and listen to Rainey’s needs.

So…what makes me sad?

Anyway, since Out of Goodbyes is Gen Ryan’s story to tell (she didn't ask me for suggestions) she used her excellent writing skills to give us a realistic story that is one of my favorites so far this year. Out of Goodbyes is a beautiful story of love, growth, more love, and an HEA. I highly recommend Out of Goodbyes with the first book When We Were Young . This is not a standalone novel but trust me you will have a wonderful time with these characters. It takes the reader through a wide range of emotions and come out happy at the end.

You MUST read When We Were Young first! This story picks up right where the cliffhanger left off at. It’s a novella, so it’s a quick read and an emotional story.

After the cliffhanger from WWWY, I was dying to know who Rainey would end up with. And she did the best thing, she chose herself. She decided she was putting herself and her happiness first. Which is a lesson I think lots of people need to learn, especially while going through heartbreak.

Another great story from Gen Ryan!! I have absolutely LOVED every story I’ve read by her. This story will make you laugh and cry and feel all the feels but it’s such a great story!

Gen Ryan is brilliant, let me start of by saying that. This series leaves me at a loss for words to adequately describe how I feel about Out of Goodbyes. I loved everything about it. Rainey deserves to be happy and the way that Gen has written this following on from When We Were Young was perfect. I am happy with the direction that this story took. There are a lot of raw emotion within this book which Gen captures beautifully. I look forward to the next book in the series.

4 1/2 Stars!

Out of Goodbyes is book two in the Hopelessly Devoted. It can not be read as a standalone, you must read When We Were Young first. This one picks up where the last one left off. Rainey is just ready to move on from Parker when he shows back up. My heart went out to Rainey. She's worked so hard to get to where is she. I was kind of mad at Parker for coming back. I really liked Levi and was so hoping that Levi would be the one for Rainey. Levi has had he relationship issues too. He's very patient and really a nice guy. I really enjoyed reading this one.

I absolutely loved this second part in the series. Just went Book one tore me up, the second one filled my heart. Rainey has finally realized that she’s worth finding her own happiness. After everything Parker and her had been through.
While struggling with depression and a life changing event.
Levi is an absolutely amazing man. Having gone through so much and losing what he thought was his true love to someone else. He tries to move on without much success. Until now.
This installment will leave you smiling. It was a sweet short read that I truly enjoyed.

Out of Goodbyes is second in the series so be sure to read book one so you can meet the characters and not be confused. I’m happy with the way Rainey’s story ended. Out of Goodbyes is a sweet read of her finally surrendering to herself and allowing her to just be happy. I enjoyed it and look forward to the next in the series.

Holy Lord, I loved this book! Levi is everything!
I loved the all encompassing love Gen captured here. I also loved how it covered all the bad stuff too. Life isn’t perfect and neither is any of the relationships featured, but I love how it was all handled here.
This was a great end to the duo and I canNOT wait for the next two books!

This picks up where the other one left off with another very emotional read that is a big roller-coaster ride as much as the first one was. This is a very talented author that really knows how to pull on your heart strings. We start off with Parker going to Rainey’s home and begging for another chance, he will do anything to get back the woman he loves. Will Rainey’s give that chance and will Parker be willing to give her what she needs or could there be someone else putting a tailspin on the outcome?

Rainey gave their marriage her all where Parker didn’t give her what she needed, he never put her first. She gave him respect he didn’t always give it to her. Everything she did, she did out of love having no trouble showing how much she loved him. He has a hard time with showing love after all he went through he just has a hard time with most things. It is easy for me to understand both sides of the story and my heart breaks for both. The last straw for her was how Parker acted and how the break up came about. Rainey has always made her marriage the center of her world and tries hard to keep it that way. But something has to give and it doesn’t look like it will be Parker. I really loved how the author shows how strong Rainey is even when she doesn’t see it herself. She works so hard to keep her marriage together looking for ways to make it work. What I really like about this story is how the author shows both sides making it easy to step back and understand both worlds and see all that is going on with them both.

In walks Levi who know just what she is going through he has been down that road his self. It is a struggle for him to give her room to work out her feelings for Parker as he tries to build a trust with her. You can’t blame her for having trust issues. Both have issues they have to work out as the work on building a relationship together. To be truly happy first you must find peace inside yourself, love yourself and make yourself happy. This is something Rainey has yet to find. Depression has so many side effects, it isn’t an easy thing to deal with and it makes it harder for one to find that enter peace and be happy as Rainey is finding out.

As I turned the last page I have very mixed emotion between who I want Rainey with. Levi is such a great character, he is so strong, caring and loving. BUT Parker is going through so much and I see where he is coming from. I don’t know if I could forget or forgive the cheating, but I am not important here it is what Rainey wants. I think her feelings are just as mixed up as mine are. There are so many emotions you will feel and when you close the book you still are an emotional mess. The author knows how to draw her readers in giving a compelling read that has you so invested you start talking to the characters. I have to say I am hanging on until I get my hands on the next book in this series to see just where the author is going to take it. I sure hope Parker finds his HEA after all he is dealing with and has been through. WELL worth your time but you must read the first book in the series.

This is the second book in the series and book one, When We Were Young, needs to be read first.
Rainey Matthews had her life change on her in an instant and all her dreams were gone when her husband, Parker Matthews, said their marriage was over. Yet she slowly began to find herself again with the help of Levi Hayes.
But now Parker has changed his mind and wants Rainey back. Will she allow him a second chance like she has always done or will she find that it is time to live for herself?
This was such a great book and really addresses what so many women go through or have gone through.
I loved how Rainey finally followed her own path and did what was right for her - independent of both Parker and Levi. I loved her friendship with Ava and how when Rainey needed her the most she showed up to support her with everything.
I was amazed at how much Parker grew up in this book and changed. I loved seeing the change.
Levi was such a great guy and really truly listened to Rainey and was aware of what she liked and didn't like. He had to face his own past in this book and I loved how he handled it.
I loved the chemistry in the book and how Rainey chose the one who made her the happiest.
Such a great book and it makes you think about living your life for you! - By Rebecca

A beautifully emotional realistic look at relationships. I wanted another story but that doesn't mean this isn't perfect as is.

What I wanted.

She is finally getting her life together and here he comes. So typical, isn't it. Just as you clear your mind and move on here they come back to remind you. There is so much going on in this story and Rainey is feeling it all. It's up to her to decide if there is anything left. While Rainey battles with her decisions things are happening that make the decision easier. How do you choose between the man who has helped you heal and the one that you thought was your soul mate and lifelong partner. Rainey has a decision to make and it wont be easy or maybe Parker's actions will.

A beautiful story filled with angst and love. This author blends the story of the impact of our soldiers on the people they leave behind when serving our country. In this case we feel the loss and pain from what they left here and the ones they lost who were serving. It isn't easy for anyone involved and here the impact is felt. A different perspective worthy of the time to read it and more.

Out of Goodbyes is so well written you will need a box of Kleenex by your side for the sheer emotional weight of this story. Gen Ryan has written the perfect ending to When We Were Young. Rainey has a decision to make about her own happiness and she makes the right one for the first time in a long time she picks her. Her happiness, her future and her joy. That is the hardest decision for most of us to make. You have to give past whatever negative thoughts and forces are in your life to find happiness. This book will make you feel sadness and joy at the same time. I loved everything about this novella.

This is another emotionally charged story that had on a rollercoaster of emotions. This is a story about finding one’s self, happiness, and love. The characters are complex, and believable. I highly recommend reading the first book, When We Were Young, before reading this story. This book picks up right after the events of the first book.

Amazing

Wow the conclusion to Rainey’s story had me in tears in some of it she had the guy that she has been in love with since she was 16 back In her life than she had Levi! We got to see some of Levi’s background of why his heart was broke but can Rainey fix it, such an amazing book and I can’t wait to read Parker’s book!

This was a great book. It was easy to follow and the storyline was perfect. I loved Rainey and how she came through depression. Although I wanted a different ending for her it was perfect the way it was. I can't wait to read the next book about Parks.
