Drowning is the first Margaret McHeyzer book I have read, and there is no doubt I will be back for more. This one hit me in all the right places, and I’m desperate to see what else Margaret McHeyzer can do to me.

Despite how intrigued I was by the notion of this book, there was some uncertainty in place. I’m always open to books dealing with heavy topics, but when it’s a topic I have personal experience with I find myself fearful of how well it will be done. Thus, I was both excited and nervous to read this one.

Quickly, I realised my fears were unfounded. There was no reason for my nervous, as this book does a wonderful job of dealing with many heavy topics. The self-harm element of the story is well done: it looks at more than just the act itself, dealing with all the fears that go with it (the fear someone will find out, the fear someone knows, the fears of what you will do when it comes to clothing, and so many other fears many may not realise are associated with the act), the individual feelings towards the act (the good and the bad), and the way in which others respond. The mental health element is also really well done: it is a central aspect to the story, and it has a large focus on bringing to light the stigma and fears surrounding mental health. There is another element that is really well done, but I’m not going to say what it is. You get hints of it throughout the story, so you can guess what is coming, but I’m not going to say what it is before you get the chance to dive in – just know, the heavy topic I have not mentioned is also dealt with really well. There’s also a part in the middle of the book that was completely unexpected and equally heavy – and again, it was done really well.

In fact, this is one of the best books I have read in a long time when it comes to dealing with heavy topics. It’s a diverse story – the characters and the events – and all is done really well. You’re sucked into the story, into the lives of the characters, and you cannot help but feel. It’s very much a character driven story, you spend a lot of time inside the head of our main character, coming to understanding how she is feeling. The events that do occur all hit hard, ensuring you’re sucked in deep.

There is no doubt this is a heavy read, that this is a book people should read. It deserves to consumed, it deserves attention, and the more people who read this the more eyes that can be opened. I’m not trying to preach here, I’m not suggesting the book is either, but it is one of those books that will make people sit back and think.

The only thing to stop me from giving a five-star rating was the romance. I enjoyed it a lot – the way the characters grew, the way they dealt with their problems – but I felt as though it wasn’t quite given the focus it could have been towards the end. There was such a connection between the characters early in the book, and I wished to see the same level of intensity at the point where fears were being faced. It was well done, but I would have liked more. Hence, this is more of a four-point-five-star read: I loved it, but it wasn’t quite enough for me to round up.

Overall, this one hit me hard, in the best way possible, and it’s going to take a while for me to find my equilibrium again.

Drowning is the kind of book that takes awhile to read because it’s filled with heavier, emotional content. Ivy is a cutter and though I have read a few books with characters who cut at times, this is one of the few books I’ve read that selves so deeply into that mental condition. My heart broke for Ivy as I read her story. She was extremely relatable I just wanted to reach into the book and save her. Tobias was fighting his own demons, but these two found a way to help each other overcome their pain and the darkness they fought. I also greatly enjoyed the secondary characters. Tobias’ grandmother stole my heart. This was a difficult, but rewarding read because of the content and the emotions McHeyzer managed to stir up.

This Story will stay with me for a long time to come. It is thought provoking roller coaster of a book. It does deals with mental health issues and other issues that are both pretty close to my own heart. This book a beautifully written, the story is great, the feelings are so powerful.
It is emotional raw and heart breaking.
I loved Ivy and Tobias they are two broken souls both fighting their own demons in the only way they think they can... I loved Jared her best friend... The side characters are so good as well, Tobias grandmother I loved her she is so cool. I loved how she dealt with a certain person he only got what he deserved, A baseball bat<<<< that was brilliant. This will make sense when you read the book. Ivy and Tobias fought their demons came out stronger. However, sadly not everyone can fight his or her demons
All I will say is have loads of tissues to hand I went through a lot reading this book but so worth it. I love the message. . Therefore, please if you are dealing with one of the issues in this book or any mental health issues please speak out, there is someone out there willing to help or even listen.
There is no real way of describing this book to be able to do it justice. Margaret amazes me every time with her storytelling. This book will be one of my favourite books, definitely one I will never forget.

This story of Ivy and Tobias touched my heart. It made me ugly cry, the emotions seemed to jump off the page. As we travel with these two, we learn of their demons and how they overcome them. This author is amazing and her writing will move you.

It took me a while to write this review, not because the book was bad, but I needed the time to absorb what I read. I needed to give this author the respect she deserves; understand truly what this story was all about and the impact it can have on anyone who reads it.

Secrets; the characters in this book both have them, but are both unwilling to share them, even if it spells the end for them both. Tobias and Izy are 2 high school students that are caught up in a horrific incident, that forever changed them. But to add to this, they both carried into that "day" their own separate "demons".

I have always loved how this author writes, her flow of words can captivate anyone from beginning to end, she has never once disappointed me. But if we are to be truly honest; she had taught me so much; to be so much more accepting and has given me an insight into the stigma surrounding mental health.

When the new bad boy, Tobias comes to school, he causes a bit of a frenzy. However, Tobias only seems to have eyes for Ivy. Ivy has a secret, she is a cutter. Tobias is drawn to Ivy, he knows she has demons just like he does. He is trying to control his demon but every now and again something causes a trigger and his reaction scares Ivy. Can he open up to her or will his demon destroy any future for them? Ivy keeps having nightmares and the only way to control her anxiety is to cut. When an incident happens at school, it causes a chain reaction of events. While it was devastating it also allowed Ivy to finally get the help she needed. Unfortunately, Tobias does not get help, he runs instead. Can Tobias ever deal with his demons and convince Ivy to take a chance on him. Can he get the help he needs so desperately? Ivy learns to heal and manages her life with the help of those closest to her. When her path crosses with Tobias years later, can she get over the hurt he caused her or is it wiser for her to close that door? Can she give him the chance to explain? Can two broken people mend each other hearts and keep the demons at bay. All I can say is that Margaret McHezyer is one heck of an author. It does not matter what genre she writes, or which taboo situation she writes about. She draws you in and makes you emotional about her characters flaws. Her research on the subjects, are well researched and very informative. Her writing flows and while educating us, she also tells the story with so much angst, emotion and plot twists. Her characters have demons, and yet, you will love them from the onset. All I can say is that this book was an eye opener and so much more. Once again Margaret McHezyer has shown how very talented she is.

What a wonderfully well written story of abuse, self harm and healing. This book gives the reader a deeper insight into what mental health issues are out there and how they affect people. It tells of how traumatic the issue is and how love, compassion and understanding go a long way in helping the individual heal. Help is available if you stay strong and reach out. Margaret makes you feel like you are a part of the characters lives and just want to take the pain away. Recovery is a long road to travel but it will get easier if you just stay strong. This is a story everyone old or young needs to read. Thank you Margaret, I know this reader is Staying Strong.
