I was given a free e-copy of this book through the For Love of a Book ARO program. This does not in any way change my opinion or rating. I try to express only my most honest opinion in a spoiler-free way. If you feel anything in my review is a spoiler and is not already hidden in spoiler brackets please let me know. Thank you.

So I did enjoy this book. There was plenty to like. Unfortunately, I just had too many issues with it to rate it any higher than a 3 star, even though I am interested in continuing the series.

Okay, so I'm going to start with the things I enjoyed about the book first. The main storyline was intriguing. Trying to find a peaceful way to end a senseless war. I also loved the whole fairy world scene. Paranormal is one of my favorite genres. I also like the academy books, I like the fun atmosphere of them. Lucien, I'm loving. Some of the romantic scenes give me the happy tingles that make me love romance since the beginning.

So now for my issues with the book. So first of all, the first fourth of the book felt rushed and forced. I'm not one for a drawn-out introduction, but this just rushed through it so fast that I almost got whiplash lol. Tiana just needed more information on her personality and her past in my opinion. She also accepted the academy way to easily considering how much she did want to go there.

The relationships were to forced. Even with the whole magic as an explanation for the attraction, it was still so unrealistic. But even her friendships with some of the guys were just there, no real work leading up to it. There was a point in the book where she thinks "if I know Lucien" well she didn't know Lucien, they basically just met.

The only other thing I didn't really like was probably more about my personal preferences and not an issue with the writing at all. But the romance fell a bit flat for me simply because there was no focus on who were the romantic interests. I'm okay with multiples, like love triangles, but maybe harem and reverse-harem books aren't my thing. I think this is the first time I have read one.

Despite all this, the book did get better the other three-quarters of the book and I enjoyed reading. Couldn't put it down the last half. I love the ending, while it ends on a cliffhanger, it ends with the promise of something with so much potential.

How I choose my rating:
1* Hated it. Had to force myself to finish it.
2** Didn't really like it. Didn't hate it but not sure why I finished it other then for some closure.
3*** I liked it. I had some issues with it, but as a whole it was good. I probably won't reread again ever, but there is a chance I might finish the series. (If part of one) But if not it's not a huge loss.
4**** I really liked this book. Maybe not a work of genius, but highly entertaining. I might reread this again, and I will finish the series. (If part of one) I would recommend to those I know hold interest in this books content.
5***** I loved this book. I found little to no issues with it at all. I will definitely be rereading this and probably more than once. I will finish the series and reread it multiple times. (If part of one) I will recommend this book to EVERYONE!!!!

i received a free copy of this from the For Love of a Book ARO program, this did not affect my rating or review.

this was.... interesting. on one hand the start felt very rushed and i didn't like the writing at all, but it slowly got better, and then there was Rowan. Rowan just took the cake and was basically the entire reason i enjoyed this book. he was sarcastic and funny and took no shit and i loved it. i didn't really love much else, the characters were basic but ok, and the storyline wasn't especially original but it was entertaining so that was good. i'm disappointed that our MC left her 'best friend' with little care or worry and didn't call or text or even mention her for the rest of the story, it wasn't very best-friend like. i feel like her best friend could have been another fav character. ah well.
there were a couple of grammatical issues and the writing wasn't great, plus there were some stages where i hardcore cringed, but overall this kept my attention for a while and Rowan was definitely a legend and a half, so this wasn't bad!

thank you to the author and FLOAB for the ARC :))

It was totally different from other books. And the academy is simply awesome. The story is mindblowing. The characters are relatable and written very well. I was captivated by the plot since the start. I just can't wait for the next book in the series.

I received an ARC for my honest review.

Faetastic

This first book of the series is a definite must read.
The characters draw you in and hold you captive, the realm they live in is beautifully brought to life and the story line is captivating.
I would highly recommend this to all Fae or Academy Romance lovers.

This started out great. The blurb drew me in and then I started reading and loved the MC so everything was all good.

Then as I kept reading I started to get annoyed with not only the MC, but also the fact that...

👉🏼Up until she arrives at High Fae Academy, she has zero interest in attending. She is absolute against it. Then she strikes up a deal - give them a few weeks and then she can decide if she wants to stay or return back to her old life. It seems like out of nowhere, she's all in w/ the Academy. There's a chance I didn't read far enough to find out that maybe she changed her mind and wants to go back to her bar.. but the direction the story was going in leads me to believe that that's not the case.
Anyways, my issue, or where I was annoyed/confused is what changed? Why all of a sudden is she cool with going against something she was so adamant about... not wanting to be cannon fodder in some war that she has no interest in fighting.

👉🏼Then there's the fact that the MC just knew things. Things that had not been explained to her - someone who had not lived in or knew much about this fae society. There was one instance where, after the fact, the MC mentions reading something in a pamphlet. But other than that she just knew this or that and it didn't make sense to me, nor was it explained how she'd come by this knowledge.
Mind you, she grew up in human society and hadn't even known that she was fae. She just thought she was an elemental something or other. This world she enters is a completely different one, or so we're supposed to believe. While a lot of it seems quite similar, it is mentioned that she is different because she grew up as a human in the human world and there are some differences between the two societies, yet she's fluent in the one she knew almost nothing about...

👉🏼When her spirit power is introduced, the author set it up almost as a prediction of what the MC's relationship will be like with the Spirit guy. Then we meet the Spirit guy and I'm thinking... okay this is the gonna be the broody guy of the harem who makes her work for it. That lasted for all of, like, 5 seconds. Then it's almost as if the author can't decide if he's gonna be broody or all loved up w/ the MC. It just felt really indecisive, and not in an intentional way.

👉🏼The thing that bugged me most about this though was all the telling and not showing. We're told that she's got this intense connection w/ the five princes? leaders of the elements? whatever they were. She makes out w/ them after not really having an actual conversation with them and we're just supposed to believe that they are #endgame?

We're told that she's got all this power and she can do all these things, but we don't really see her using/learning about her power. At one point, she just instinctively knows how to do hand-to-hand combat and this is literally a few sentences after she tells us that she's never even been in a fight before and has absolutely no training.

Anyways.

So, I thought this was RH, but after getting about halfway through this... I'm not so sure.
As I mentioned, she's got this super intense connection...

Sorry, she's got this super intense connection with the four PrinceDudeGuys, but then she meets the fifth spirit KingHomieBro and all the others fall to the wayside. In fact, .
Errm.. that's not RH works. She gets to keep ALL the guys.. it's the whole premise of Why Choose.
It's also mentioned that she can only mate to one element. Initially, I ignored this because of course there's got to be some sort of roadblock to her HEA, but after I'm thinking maybe they really only can have the one mate.

Maybe their connection snaps back at some later point in the book? Don't know, don't care.
By this point, I was just over it.

So yeah, I wasn't impressed.
I might be judging too harshly.

High Fae Academy: Year One: Fae Paranormal Romance is the first book in the High Fae Academy series by Kaylin Peyerk. This is my first read by Ms. Peyerk, so I really didn’t know what to expect from her writing. But I really love a great fantasy story- and I’m not one to pass up a paranormal romance. So, I grabbed a copy and took the plunge. This isn’t my first paranormal, reverse harem college romance- so I was looking forward to seeing what Ms. Peyerk could do with the subject-matter.
This turned out to be a sweet, interesting, and intriguing story- although somewhat predictable- I still enjoyed the story. There were a few minor issues for me- I would have liked more on the character/s backstory(ies) and character information as this would have allowed me to connect with the character/s more quickly and easily. But perhaps we will get more backstory and character information in future instalments- I will have to wait and see. There were also times the story felt a little rushed, especially at the beginning while the groundwork was being laid out. But it did settle down part way through and I was able to enjoy the story more. Then there were storyline issues- such as the emphasis that was placed on the fact that Tiana was staunchly against the academy and all it ‘stood’ for- but kind of just ‘accepted’ being there without the ‘fight’ I would have expected knowing she felt so strongly about the Academy. I thought her transition went a little ‘too easily’. But that’s just my opinion- others may not feel that way about it.
The thing that really drew me to the story was the whole prophecy aspect of the story, and the promise of a great ‘adventure’. I am holding out my full opinion on this until I have read further instalments- and get more of a feel of where the story is headed. After the ending of this book, I am intrigued to start the next book and find out what happens.

Thank you, Kaylin Peyerk!

***ARC received in exchange of an honest review***

Let me start this review by saying this book has a kind of element I don't like in books, but even if it wasn't for that I don't think I would have enjoyed it better.

I'm not really into reverse harem kinds of books, but despite that I have enjoyed some, when it's written in a more organic and fluid way. High Fae Academy: Year One has a lot of elements I really enjoy in books and I am a fan of young adult and new adult fantasy books, but unfortunately this left a lot to be desired for me.

The story starts very abruptly and the heroine kind of abandoms her old life without turning back and some characters are never mentioned again. Then a lot happens very very fast. Also I felt like the dialogues were forced sometimes, so was her connection with many of the males in the book.

I would like to see where the story goes, but unfortunately I don't think I will, because this book was enough for me. I didn't feel captivated by it. The opposite, actually. Most of everything was very childish and made no sense. For me anyways.

The book and the story had potential, but it didn't reach there for me, but it still might appeal to other readers.

High Fae: Year One is a great book to start off the series. It was a bit different than the usual Far books I read.

So it starts off with you meeting Taina. She is raised in the human world but is half Fae. Then one day she meets Orin and then her world changes. She goes with him to High Fae Acadamy. There she meets the Princes of the Fae. Orin, Damon, Rai, Adrian and Lucian. Four are princes and one is king. These guys don't tell Tiana about something important and that changes everything. She is at the academy to learn more about her powers and to learn to control. But her magic wants her to mate shortbread five men. Howevrr, it's for life so she has to be careful. She is tested throughout this book and something else is revealed. Like omg what is is she going to find out before she goes insane.

You will get enraptured with this book and before you know it, the book ends with a cliffhanger. What? I need book two and hopefully soon.

Ugh.
I cant even review it properly yet im still trying to wrap my brain around the entirety of the shit show. On the upside their were some positives so im trying to focus on them and chill out before writing an actual review.
But basically TLDR steer clear.
Like seriously run screaming unfortunately.
Consider this me taking one for the team and save yourself the headache.
If you want a better written book with essentially a similar vibe try Hive series the one with the unicorn female vamp in a race of all male vamps military esque book.
Cause one of the few good things about this book is that it reminded me of the time i binge read the hive series and enjoyed the fuck outta it.

I started listening to this on audible while on a road trip. Because I was enjoying the writing and narration I decided to purchase book two before I headed into a no reception area. ... I have regrets.
This is not an r.h. and the heroine, although drawn to multiple men who really liked her and wanted her to be their soulmate, had to choose only one. (Which although that's what was said ... She really had no choice, fate chose). This created major anxiety for me as a reader. For example she decides to sleep with a guy who her powers are extremely connected to and right after they do the deed he's destroyed (in the heart) because their power didn't connect. I had to dnf after this because I just wasn't enjoying it.

** There were many other little things that were off as well, but I don't care to go into that much detail for this review. **

So the question is ... Do I go to the effort to contact amazon for a refund on book two which I will never read? I guess we'll see.

So many feels!

Tiana is my spirit animal. The bit before going to the academy could have been longer. But really liked her display of snarky magic. Loved the first 3 days of her at the academy. I felt like the time at the academy was actually longer than it was before the competition started. It seemed to start fairly early in the year. But makes since it only happens when Spirit King is on campus. But still.

Loved the interaction she had with the males. The tension she felt. The trainings they had. When she broke the sound barrier. I literally LOL'd. Such a great scene.

I love how she feels about the war, the killing, and the deaths. And that she is determined to halt the killing and the war. The ending makes sense to that coming true. But seriously how that happened and that cliff hanger ending. Ah!

My star breakdown:
Transition into the academy 4 stars
Magical training 5 stars
Male interaction 5 Stars
Sexy males 5 stars
Sexual tension 5 stars
Queen bee 3 stars. I wanted more+
Snarky heroine 5 stars
Badass heroine 5 stars

Magical!

I would've given 5 stars, but I hate cliff-hangers with a passion. I would not continue reading this series if I had to wait to read to the end of it, even tho this is an amazing book. As it is a finished series, I will read the next one, and hope for a better conclusion. This book is too good for this type of ending. Enjoy!

Tianta has enter the school of the gifted raised I the human world she's got to adjust to those who have been in the supernst world all along. Cryena is a very straight to the point character. The boys are tricky but you want them. When Tianta doesn't know they help her understand. She realise there a different between human and Faes. I can't wait to read more I need to read more.

I really wanted to enjoy this book. It was a first in the Fea/Fantasy genre for me. It just seems once it got to the point of only talking about the attraction and wanting to bump uglies, I couldn't keep listening. Not that I am a prude or anything, I just needed more of an interesting story. Maybe I will try again, but for now, I had to stop listening because it was not holding my interest.

Not for me.

I had high-ish hopes for this as the premise sounded pretty good. However the protagonist was so freaking annoying, and the ‘Kings’ surrounding her weren’t much better. The only character I liked was Rowan.

High Fae Academy Year One is a quick read with the short length it has and overall stays very shallow barely grazing the surface through it all.

There isn't much effort of world building and time to establish the FMC Tiana and set a certain mood for the story that's having a constant war and a prophecy for that war involved, like Tiana is going to be someone important according to the prophecy so I expected to see the war situation and it's effects through just Tiana's POV before being influenced by everyone else. I felt like half human unawareness a cop out and the way she basically forgets her life once she is in the academy enforces this lack of effort vibe. The academy itself doesn't have enough academy related shit for someone who is just starting. I think there were like two scenes where she has class without the princes who train her.

The romance is the most confusing, at first glance the blurb made it seem like it would be a reverse harem then it starts and the RH feeling grows stronger until she is starts to say that she is not feeling so intensely or not the same way after she slept with one of them. Huh? After reading the blurb again, it does state just "paranormal romance" so I thought it's a monogamy thing until the Rowan character comes into play and the darker Faes. I just have no idea what this romance is.

Tiana as a character is okay, nothing memorable and the guys are the weakest with barely any details or presence with boring dialogues or things that seem artificially placed like her up and down with Lucian or having some potential with others but barely have scenes to feel like there is something there.

The book doesn't offer even the basics if you are looking for an academy read and don't care much about the immersive quality but it's not even good for that.

High Fae Academy – Year One – Kaylin Peyerk

[I received this book free from the author in exchange for and honest review.]
Kaylin Peyerk is a new author for me, and boy am I glad to have discovered her. This book from the start reels you in and has you devouring it within hours. The book itself is a paranormal book based in the realm of the fae. Tiana the main character is half human and half fae who wants nothing to do with the magic she possesses, she is quite happy living her human life and suppressing her powers until she meets Odin. Odin is one of the five fae princes you meet throughout the book alongside him is Lucian, Adrian, Rai and Damon. Tiana is inexplicably drawn to the men and the slow burning chemistry she has between them is palpable. Tiana is a strong, kickass female lead who has strong opinions and an even stronger will and the author takes you on the journey she is going through in a seamless way.

The book is a great segway into what I’m sure is going to be an amazing series. The author has developed characters in a way that is individual, and they all have their own personalities that shine through. The fae princes each have a specialty element, and each have a hand in helping Tiana tame her previously concealed powers. Overall this book is a great, easy to read paranormal romance novel that I am excited to see continue, if you don’t like cliff hangers than this book will leave you disappointed, however this left me wanting to devour the next book.

Enjoy Everyday,

Has potential.

This story has a lot of potential, but it felt somewhat anticlimactic and it was hard to pay attention to main story points for a variety of reasons. The main character is often distracted by potential relationships, which takes away from her purpose in the story a little, she has half formed friendships on the side, and an enemy that just sort of fades into non-existence after one or two confrontations. Those things didn’t feel like they added to the story, they felt more like fluff to kind of move things along. The school aspect is also missing a little bit. From the beginning she really doesn’t even have classes, except one or two, in spite of being a first year student. The plot seemingly centralizes around a prophecy, but nothing regarding the actual prophecy truly happens nor do we see a whole lot of growth for the character-this book was pretty short with few chapters so perhaps there wasn’t even a possibility for that given it’s short length. The editing for this book was awful, so many typos, grammatical errors, words left out of sentences, and even punctuation misuse. That alone, was very distracting for me and did not provide a smooth read through. A good proofreader could have corrected a lot of that and even an alpha/beta reader could have brought it to the author’s attention.
I really wanted to like this book and while I enjoyed some parts it still felt pretty half-formed and lacking depth.

5.0 rating my review
Taina thought she was an elemental who had some powers until a man shows up in her cafe. She finds out she is wanted at the fae academy. She finds out she is a rare and has rare gifts she controls all elements air, earth, fire, water, and spirit. She is part of a prophecy and she doesn't want to be and to make matters worse her elements are calling to all the Masters trying to mate with them. She wants Lucian though he pulls to her the most. That is until she realized there is a other person in her. He is a fae king Rowan and he helps her through her problem now and now on more problem is in the equation she has feelings for him. Can she love someone who isn't real? She takes a life in a dual that the school has and she doesn't want to do it again. She goes to practice with Rowan and something happens it turns dark and she can't find him. She hits her head wakes up everything looks the same Lucian looks the same. Rowan won't answer her and when she looks out the window she knows she is in trouble she is at the dark fae academy.

Loved this book so much. Can't wait for the next one. There was some spelling errors but other than that I loved it.
