Alexei: Broken Hero Enemies-to-Lovers Mafia Romance is book for in the Belles & Mobsters series by Eva Winners. This one had me up all night because I could not stop reading. Alexei Nikolaev is a broken man. His soul is black, and he’s beyond redemption. Still, he wants to do one good thing - bring down Ivan Petrov, the man responsible for trafficking young boys whom he uses and abuses. Alexei was in of those boys. Before he escaped, Alexei helped Ivan lure two children for capture. The little boy was captured, but Alexei helped the little girl get home. Aurora is an FBI agent with one case on her mind - capture the man responsible for stealing her brother 20 years ago. When told she will work with the Nikolaev, a notorious crime family, she hesitates then goes along when she realizes this is the only way. The attraction between Aurora and Alexei is instant. Going undercover at a sex club, they give in to their primal urges and start a passionate affair. Will Aurora be able to see past the tattoos that cover Alexei’s body and love him? Will Alexei be able to get past his abuse and let Aurora love him. When Aurora finds out the part Alexei played in the disappearance of her brother, will she forgive him? This book hooked me! Alexei is such a great character who evolves over the course of the book. Aurora is a smart, take no prisoners heroine despite being a bit smothered by her I overprotective brothers. When Alexei and Aurora come together, it is fire! Alexei is a great book. It can be read as a stand-alone, but I think it’s best read as part of the series. Let me know what you think!

    Get yourself a man like Alexei, who only softens for his girl and only his girl.

    The man has one of the most mysterious lore of all the mobsters. His story dives deep, the truth of his being and the tribulations which shaped him are gut wrenching and tear jerking.

    As the ever growing web of families continue in the Eva-verse we get our first introduction into the Ashford family and this is a family legacy which needs to be unpacked. Luckily, we get spoiled and have Aurora taking us on the journey. She is the baby sister of the Ashfords and her upbringing provided her with a bit more cushion than her older siblings. She’s cunning but not entitled.

    The pairing of Alexei and Aurora is beautiful.

    Enjoyed this 4th entry in the series though the Belles & Mobsters thread was not prominent other than to help explain the interrelatedness of the characters from the first 3 in the series. The premise in this book was more far-fetched than in the other three - an FBI agent assigned to go undercover with a known Russian mobster - but once the reader accepts that context, the story is engaging if somewhat predictable. Even predicting outcomes, the HEA was sweet and real. Alexei may be a broken hero but he very likable and draws the reader in to the extent that, like Aurora, one wishes he could own the goodness within himself.

    Ok I’m loving this series but this one triggered me🥹. I quickly skipped those parts and tried to move on, It didn’t work. I was sad and found myself antsy wondering when it would come up again not allowing me to really enjoy the book. I know I’m sensitive but I keep trying to read these types of books 🤦🏾‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️. I did enjoy their love and protectiveness of one another it was healing ❤️‍🩹. I want so bad to know what happened to “Kingston” but I’m sure I can’t handle it 🤦🏾‍♀️. I hope he gets a book 📖

    This book could have been excellent if it were formatted like a standalone. But because it’s interconnected, and they want to keep those connections in the current story, the first 30% and oddly placed flashbacks, make it light on plot and even lighter on the relationship between Alexi and Aurora. At around the 25% mark they had only interacted with each other twice and one of those times was the prologue of a future chapter of the first spice scene. And it’s incredibly bland. I think they did this in an attempt to hook the reader, knowing the first third of the book reads like an info dump on every character in the series. I mean you’re getting the brothers, sisters, wives, friends, children, grandparents even. I actually know the age of the nanny that was on duty when the brother was nabbed but I don’t really know a thing about Auroras life prior to getting assigned to the case. I read several of the books prior, even ones from the connected series, and I was still lost for much of it. I still for the life of me don’t understand the Anya/Gabriel/Santos storyline and it adds absolutely nothing to the plot of this book.

    Then there are oddly placed flashbacks of Alexi’s time in captivity, after he escaped, when he goes back to retrieve the brother and the dog, how he finds his brothers, etc, placed at strange points in the couples current story that aren’t really related to the dialogue. It’s just weird and very disjointed.

    What they should have done is told Alexi’s story from the beginning, his childhood, his captivity, his abuse, his escape, in a cohesive linear timeline with some time jumps to get to the present moment. Because while Alexi is a character in nearly every other connected book, you don’t really get his POV and so in this one it feels glib and emotionally detached.

    It’s also very weird that he escaped from his abuser but then goes back to him as if he hasn’t been hunted for years by the same abuser. He’s currently threatening to steal his nephew and that’s his reasoning for eliminating the villain. Even though he expresses extreme guilt for his participation in the villains doings, he does squat about it for like a decade and we’re supposed to believe his connection to Aurora has motivated any of his actions or that he legitimately cares about her. No kissing, no touching, connectionless smex isn’t in my bag of lovable romance tropes.

    It’s a disaster of a plot and it could have been a real tear jerker. I’m at 65% and it’s still info dumping the past story lines. I should be neck deep in the relationship part of the plot by now. I’m not going to DNF it so I can’t do 1 star, but I definitely recommend skipping it.
