5 Devil’s Bargain Stars ⭐

Second read of one of my favorite books ever!

Bass-Awkwards is truly scandalous, surprisingly romantic and certainly the naughtiest book I have ever read. For all the wrongins like myself, if you haven’t read this, you’re missing out.

This was the most bass-ackwards courtship she’d ever heard of in her life.
And … and I don’t hate it.

Bill Marshall is an asshole and doesn’t shy away from that fact. He owns Haul Ash Truck and Trailer Rental in Texas and runs a tight operation. His staff would agree, that apart from being hard working, he gives zero fucks about anything else. This would explain why Christina Lee Dodd made a deal with the devil.

Christina is a young woman who is kind and has a lot on her plate. Namely looking after her grandfather when she barely has the means to look after herself. Finding herself in a bind, asking her boss Bill for a day off is a tall order. Except she never envisioned it would mean trading sex for favors.

"Everyone was a whore, though, really. Everyone had a price. People sold the labor of their bodies all the time. Building houses, working on cars …
Fucking Bill Marshall."

I can’t believe he went there. In simplistic terms, Bill saw an opening and took advantage of it. Expecting Christina to kick him in the balls, even he was surprised that she agreed to his terms. And because he was harboring secret feelings for her, the sexual exchange was just too convenient to resist.

You can imagine how quickly this escalated. From sexual favors for much needed cash to lines blurring, these two were in over their heads. Christina begins enjoying the exchange, while Bill is drowning under the realization that he’s seriously fucked up. Because when you do things ass backwards, it difficult to move forward.

"The asshole practically nuzzled her name at her own ear. She wanted to whirl around and slap him, suck his dick, and possibly make out with him, and in who-knew-what order."

You know when you can’t look away from a train wreck, well that pretty much sums up this story. I cringed, I repeatedly fanned myself and I wanted to throat punch Bill Marshall. That’s all before falling in love with him. I never would have imagined how well this story played out. Kudos to this author who annihilated this incredibly messed up romance.

baby needs to be put in the corner today. i feel real self-reflective, like i should take a time-out to think about what i've done

description

BUT TAKE ME AWAY THEN CAUSE THIS WAS SO HOT 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

the sexual harassment 🏃🏽‍♀️🏃🏽‍♀️🏃🏽‍♀️ the way he exploits her 💀💀💀 the fact that he cons her by telling her he wants her for an hour per week so she assumes he means one fuck per week, but he times each fuck and refuses to waste a single minute 🤣🤣🤣 an icon, a legend, he IS the moment

the reason i'm not rating it higher is cause it was too long and i was getting rly bored, i think this should've been JK novella sized. but still i loved the premise sksksdcj

what.the.actual.fuck.did i just read?

i went into this because I really enjoyed one of the novellas by this author and because of all the high ratings given by few of my gr friends but after reading this....
i now realize the only interesting thing about this book is that the romance formula is very different from the ones I've read.
that's all.

and did I enjoy it? hell no.
I can see what the author was trying to do—something completely different and 'fresh' since it's even marketed as 'a wrong way of romance' and let me tell you; it sure is wrong as fuck (not even in an acceptable way, at least for me). it was so bad and disappointing that I immediately deleted it from my kindle, not caring for all my notes for this book because your girl here is traumatized.✌🏻

me, reading the first ~50%:

ALERT: this a rant review because I’m ugh-ed by this.
Lets start with the heroine not being attracted to the hero in the first freaking place. She never even thought of him to be attractive or liked him as a boss the entire time she's worked for him (not in a hate way but more of an indifferent kind of way). They don't even communicate regularly at work and suddenly one lucky day, he asks to fuck her in exchange for a day off. Ok fine, some would argue that she said 'yes' and gave him her consent BUT she was desperate for that day off for personal reasons.
even better, we then find out apparently he's been 'in love' with her *cue eye roll*

ALSO, i just couldn't find it in myself to dismiss and not acknowledge how the heroine was uncomfortable with his approach and even felt the same way the entire couple of times he fucked her at work. yo i cringed BIG TIME while reading those scenes because he just took and took while she just waits and feels whatever he was doing to her body.....i-

After the 50% or-so mark, the heroine started to 'like' him and didn't mind the whole thing anymore but sorry sis, i wasn't convinced. Not only because it felt forced and I haven't moved on from what he did to her but also because the hero was BORING AS SHIT. I accept quiet, moody and introverted heroes but you guys.... this MF didn't even TALK 80% of this book. Only talked when he wanted a fuck. Maybe that was the author’s intention in the first place—to present to readers the true nature of our male species but i think i’ll pass because i’m surrounded by many of ‘em already, thanks though!
His background story was bland and lame as hell so you MUST understand how I couldn’t mentally digest why the heroine went all ’hey yea he's kinda cute and intersting’.
liiiike??? bitch-

anyway, that ending? wack and gross (only bc i hate them together lol)

I know I said I wouldn't mind questionable actions done by characters as long as they know what they did is wrong and feels bad for it but for some reason, there's no U-turn for this guy right here for me. nuh uh.

ugh never again! ciao

***A 2020 TOP PICK***

5 FULL STARS!!
She was Persephone to his Hades, sunshine all spread out and he wanted to do dark, horrible things.
I LOVED IT! Ms. Adderly is officially on my auto-read list.

Trigger warnings:

Plot in a nutshell: Despite knowing her boss, Bill, is a cranky, inflexible asshole, Christina Lee still asks for a day off work; she's desperate. Annoyed, Bill proposes an exchange: a day off for a fuck in the break room. Never did he expect her to accept.

Holy shit, you guys, this was so good. It started off with a dark, taboo premise and slowly worked its way backwards into a sweet, heartfelt romance - just like the title says it does!
This was the most bass-ackwards courtship she'd ever heard of in her life.
All respect to the author for pulling this off. I had my doubts with the way the first scenes between Christina Lee and Bill exploded in all their dark and dirty glory. Slowly, but surely though, something between these two very human characters began to shift.
The man who'd stuffed panties in her mouth and banged her on the bathroom sink wasn't allowed to do things that were cute. There had to be rules. Boundaries. Divisions.
Christina Lee made for a fabulous heroine. She was a gutsy survivor with a great, quirky personality.
The needle of her weirdness meter was jumping around wildly in the red.
And Bill . . . lurking just under all that despicable, asshole behavior were many redeemable qualities that he fought to keep hidden.
The man hit her with a split-second of eye contact that snapped her world from black-and-white to color and back again.
It took them a while but they finally figured each other out and I enjoyed every second of their journey. A definite re-read for the future. I highly recommend!

Well. 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

It’s a MASSIVE compliment to the author that she was able to turn this fucking workplace harassment lawsuit into the most unnervingly charming, funny, and HOT Small Town Romance.

I LOVED the heroine, Miss Christina Lee Dodd. This bitch. She was so endearing. She was just a normal fucking person. Being in her head felt like being in your own head. It was so natural.

I value writing > characters > plot, in that order. And I think your personal ranking of those three things will determine how much you like this book.

I agree with the reviews that say the plot was nothing special… but I liked that. I liked how real it felt.

I really think the writing was like… kind of fantastic. Eris Adderly was able to pinpoint and articulate these random, nuanced experiences we all have with such precision. You know on Tiktok when someone will post about a super specific, niche experience and the comments are all like— ”Wow, I’ve really never had a unique experience in my entire life”? That’s how I felt reading this book.

I love when authors are able a craft a world where the circumstances may be wild, but the characters’ human experiences feel so REAL.

4.5 backwards and unexpected stars

Oh this book, this book was totally not what I was expecting! If you are used to or like slow burn books, this is not the book for you LOL. The title itself is genius because that is exactly what happens in this book.

Christina needs to take a day off and has to ask her boss, Bill, to give her Friday off. Bill is kind of an a hole and is taciturn in almost a rude way. She goes to ask him and he immediately tells her no. He tells her the only way to get it off is if she bends over the desk, which he says she won’t do anyway, so there is her answer😬. Because Christina really needs the day off, she agrees, and it completely surprises him😅. He tells her that she can take the rest of the day off and he will give her a raise if he gets an hour with her a week. She concedes because she really needs the money. The beginning of an awkward, backwards relationship begins.

Although it seems as if it’s a one-sided relationship, really, Bill has been into Christina for a while. But because of his character and the type of person that he is, he hasn’t pursued anything with her. Christina hadn’t really looked at Bill in a different way until this backwards relationship started.

The chemistry, the tension, the hidden and quick looks was so filled with heat, that I’m surprised my fingers didn’t catch fire when I flipped through my Kindle🔥. This is the first book that I’ve read written by this author, and I am so in love with her writing style. I loved that we get both perspectives and that we feel, hear, see everything that they are experiencing. Every breath, every flutter, every sweat droplet (cause, yeah, it gets dirty🥵), it was purely amazing. Even their thought process was so in par to what was going on at the time. I’m not the biggest fan of third person perspective and they were times where I was a little bit confused as to whose perspective I was reading, but once I kept going, it became clear.

I recommend this book! I was completely drawn to what was going to happen and how their relationship was going to continue. Loved it.

Seriously, what more could I want as entertainment when looking for something to get my mind off of reality besides outrageous and delicious? *cough cough*

There was something in the writing that really grabbed me, a mixture of refreshing, bizarre, crude and witty tone. I couldn't help but gasp at some sentences and give them a backward glance, because I was like,

Yep, she did.

It was told in 3rd person, something I am not a fan. That said, I wouldn't have any other way here. It fits the story perfectly. Besides, we got both POVs, and I had a blast getting a peek in both heads. Especially Bill Marshal's.

Bill Marshall knew very much who he was. He didn't like small talk, pointless greetings, the placation of ass-kissing. He wouldn't tolerate lies or bullshit. He had zero patience for idiots. He would not bite his tongue. Blunt, harsh, taciturn and grumpy, in short, Bill Marshall was a hot unapologetic asshole.

But in the last 20%, Bill Marshal started to grow a conscience and feel remorse for the way he had been treating Cristina. Ugh.

You're an asshole.
Own it!
You need to change slowwwwly and then grovel.
The last 20% felt rushed and let me down big time.

A kinky boss/employee story with very little romance, and a bizarre ending.

I had way more fun chatting with Lana about this book, then I did actually reading it. The H seemed emotionally stunted for the majority of the book. I kept wondering why he was so off. We're not really given a backstory, everything's left up to your imagination. I still have no idea what he even looks like!

The idea that these two characters work together for over two years and are basically clueless about each other made no sense. The fact that he propositions her, she accepts, and he has no idea why she needs the money, felt like a plot hole. Especially given the fact that he was a

I guess if you read it for the straight kink alone, it's a pretty decent story. The writing was good, and the kink was steamy. I was just hoping for a little more character depth.

Thanks for suggesting this buddy read Lana!

5 'I was rating this ironically because the FMC is named Christina and it ended up humbling me by being hella good' stars✨
3.75🌶️

Of course I have to give my first time coming across a FMC named Christina 5 stars!

A deliciously fictional workplace smut fest, boss x employee finding new and tension-filled ways to get it on all across the truckyard. This is a filthy erotica with an unconventional start that evolves into a surprisingly sweet romance. An bass-ackwards process, indeed.

Sex between the MCs begins as a deal dripping with power-imbalance, our MMC Bill getting sex out of it and our FMC Christina getting time off and a pay raise. As the arrangement continues their physical connection grows with resolved lust but unresolved sexual tension, while their emotional connection makes surprising moves of its own behind the scenes.

The spice absolutely comes out swinging and holds back NOTHING for that first scene. I swear it had my jaw on the floor and I was barely 20 pages in. I knew then this one was gonna be a WILD ride.

Definite grumpy MMC x sunshine FMC vibes, and an MMC that is ONLY soft (and only sometimes at that) for the FMC. Bill is known around as 'Asshole Bill' and for good reason. As a former cop and the big boss at yard, he runs the place with rigid leadership. No one would ever know he'd been secretly, probably, in love, or at least mega-lust, with his employee Christina. Bill knows it's wrong, but when the off chance presents itself, he throws out the offer:

"Okay, Christina Lee." His voice was quieter than its usual bark, and it made her insides curl. "You can make it up by bending that pretty little ass over this table for me. Right now."

What starts as the one encounter soon turns into a 1-hour-a-week arrangement, and as physical and emotional feelings start to meld and tangle, both Christina and Bill get caught up in their respective roles in the arrangement, and what their feelings mean for it. I was rooting for them through to the end.

Also a note, I was surprised at how thoughtfully the author approached topics like caring for the older loved ones that took care of us in our youth, and the sometimes underappreciated and unpaid responsibility that comes with it.

Had massive fun with this one💛

⚠️ You will find spoilers about the first chapter.

Premise : I won’t rate this book because I only read two chapters.
Plus, the blurb implies what happens in the first chapter and I can't complain when an author delivers what she promised..I simply disliked the execution of it. This isn't a rant. Many people will probably like this story and my negative reaction is simply determined by my tastes and subjective perception.

I know it's not fair but I have double standards in Romance.

Dark Romance/Dark Erotica ? I always try to keep an open mind and I'm more forgiving because as their label suggest they are dark stories. It's like going to a Japanese restaurant and being disappointed because you don't find pizza.
Contemporary Romance (especially contemporary romance with no trigger warnings) ? I can’t accept certain types of behavior, period.
#Sorrynotsorry.

Labels are important and “a filthy wrong-way romance where two human beings make more mistakes than you can shake a stick at” isn’t a justification for what happens in the first chapter. As I said before I knew what would happened and I was okey because I thought it would be something playful and sexy..something like Beautiful Bastard. Unfortunately I was wrong and I totally disliked the execution.
Basically you will find sexual harassment, power abuse and sexual coercion .
I'm not a delicate Snowflake but the sex scene that takes place in the first chapter isn’t hot but totally uncomfortable.. it’s manipulative at best, and at worst, it’s abuse and I really felt sorry for the heroine because she didn’t even realize what happened to her.

I think this is a type of book you should read and form your own opinion.
I'll just share some parts of the “controversial scene” and let you judge for yourself if this story is something you could be interested in.

“What’s that?”
“I need to know if I can take tomorrow off.”

Dammit! Just like that?
“It’s really important,” she said..
He deposited a pair of red-handled pliers he’d been using on top of the stepladder.
“Answer’s still no”“Please,” she said, trying her best to add honey instead of salt.
“I’ll make it up.”
...
“You’ll make it up?”
Why did it sound like a threat?
Still, she nodded at the sliver of hope.
“I will.”
“Okay, Christina Lee.” His voice was quieter than its usual bark, and it made her insides curl. “You can make it up by bending that pretty little ass over this table for me. Right now. Or you can quit whining and come in tomorrow. And you won’t bring this shit up ever again.”
Her jaw hung slack.

“Okay.” His hand stopped on the doorknob. “Bill, okay.” […]”
“All the way down,” he said from somewhere closer behind her. “Shoulders on the table.”
Oh shit, oh shit.
How much higher would her dress come up if she bent over that far? But she went down on her elbows, and then laid the side of her face on the surface like he’d asked.

“You want the rest of today off, too?”
She swallowed, wetting her throat. “What?” Christina hadn’t considered having to sit around here all evening after this crazy shit had gone down. It wasn’t like she’d planned it.
The two fingers shifted. “You let me have this ass, you can go home. I’ll stay the rest of your shift.”

“Okay,” she blurted. “Yeah.”
“ ‘Yeah’ what?”
“Yeah, I want to leave.” She closed her eyes again and thought of the promise of her shower, waiting at home. “You can … you can have it.”
“All right,” he said, pulling out of both her holes at once. “Good.”
All right? Good? What a weird fucking thing to say.
But then what could he say at this point that wouldn’t be weird?
And now there was a spongy c*ck head pushing between her cheeks.
Relax. You gotta relax or this shit is gonna hurt.

You’re getting Friday. And the rest of today. That’s what you asked for, that’s what you get.
When he pulled out, she felt the leak, warm and incriminating as it oozed from her fluttering hole. After two deep breaths where she was sure he was done and gone, Christina began to right herself.
“No,” he said. “Stay where you are.”
She twisted her body. Turned her head, “What?”
“I said, stay right there. Back down how you were.”
This nightmare wasn’t over?
If it’s a nightmare, you agreed to it.
She leaned back down and sighed. The air from the vent overhead was cooling the fluids between her legs. One of her socks had slipped down inside her boot.
There were rummaging sounds, perhaps in a drawer, and then footsteps. A hand was back on her ass. Then not.
A tug on her panties. He was pulling them taut. Then she heard metal shearing through cloth.”
“Bill!”
“Hold still.”
Another snip and the tension was gone from her thighs. He’d cut off her goddamned underwear!
“Now you’re good.”
(...)
His eyes cut to the door to go outside and then back to her, and he jerked a stiff nod.
“All right,” he said. “See you Monday.”

A romance with this premise doesn’t work for me .
A male character who acts like this can’t be redeemable in my eyes.
Sorry, NOT MY CUP OF TEA.

PS: Second chapter, Hero's POV: his first sentence:

“William James Marshall was flat-out, stupid in love with Christina Lee Dodd. And not just because she’d let him have a piece on the table in the back half of the office. No, this had been going on for a while.”

I don’t think sexual coercion is the best way to show your love.

2.5 stars

The title is so appropriate for the indiscreet proposal Bill makes to his employee, Christina.

My review: the 2.5 stars are not due to the proposal — I thought the proposal was really hot and intriguing. My 2.5 stars come from the fact that I was uncomfortable and then bored reading this. I didn’t dislike it nor did I like it.

The first bit of the book was super awkward (to me).

Homegirl didn’t want to have sex though she (deep down) did. The way the first scenes were described, it just made me uncomfortable for her. I actually started pitying her.

But then things got interesting: Christina started to dislike herself because she seemed to want Bill.

In the last bit of the book, things started to get interesting — as in, Christina and Bill obviously wanted each other but neither one knew how to approach the topic, especially as the deal started coming to an end. And when Christina decides to take the next step, Bill, who really wanted Christina, acted like a dumbass and blew it.

Like dude. Seriously?

In the end they get their HEA, so whatever. But bro, this book was the most unromantic book I’ve ever read — and I’ve read quite a few.

The smutty smut was okay, though. It was steamy.

But I just..... wasn’t feeling it. Maybe this is one of those ‘it’s me, not you’ situations since I know a few of you enjoyed/loved it.

4.5 STARS

This is a GREAT read! Is it for everyone? Probably not. It is a love story, but there is very little in the way of romance. Still, I think a lot of people would love it just as much as I did, especially if you like something just a little different.

It was going to happen. She was going to let her boss put his dick in her for a goddamn day off.

Christina Lee Dodd works at a truck-rental place in the middle of Bumfuck, Texas. Asshole Bill owns the place, and Christina needs a day off for important personal reasons. So, she asks Bill for the time off, but he wants... something in return. The feminist in me was outraged, but I'll admit it: something about the situation was hot, and that only intensified over time. I don't really know why I had a soft spot for Bill Marshall; as I sit here and type this, I acknowledge that in real life, I would have had his balls for what he did (and continued to do). But for some reason, in the scope of this book, it just... worked. I mean, don't get me wrong- what Bill did is very, very wrong. Women have to deal with this shit every day and it isn't okay. But I never felt like the author was trying to excuse his behavior. This was simply a story of two people that took a really fucked-up road to end up together. Not all love stories are romantic, or moral, but that doesn't make them any less real. Maybe what made this story so refreshing was that it wasn't formulaic. It wasn't some fairy tale with a side of suspense, an alpha hero saving his weak heroine. Instead, it was about two people with real-life problems that make a lot of mistakes and still find their happiness in each other.

There was nothing left in the world for him but those blue eyes. It wasn’t awkward or weird. It was an event horizon, and he was gone.

The two most notable things about this story: the sex is filthy hot, and also, it is hilarious. The author clearly has a very dry sense of humor, which is perfect for this particular story. I really did laugh out loud more than once. Christina is a great heroine; she has a hilarious inner dialogue, but she's also sweet and loyal. It isn't hard to feel sympathetic towards Christina. Now, it took longer for me to warm up to Bill, but the fact it happened at all is a testament to the author. He made a mistake and it just really snowballed. I do think a part of him did want to help her, but I also think he was aware that she didn't hate what was happening. Is that an excuse? Of course not, but I don't think the story is trying to make excuses for him either. That being said, I don't necessarily blame someone for not wanting to read this kind of story. I'd be surprised if there's a woman out there that hasn't had to deal with inappropriate behavior in the workplace, to varying degrees. So if this doesn't sound like it's for you, then don't read it. But if you like funny, unorthodox stories that are just a little wrong, then I definitely recommend you give this one a read!

Bill Marshall named his dog ‘Daisy’. Why was that cute? The man who’d stuffed panties in her mouth and banged her on the bathroom sink wasn’t allowed to do things that were cute. There had to be rules. Boundaries. Divisions.

Who gave a shit how they’d arrived there. They were there.

Overall Opinion: This was some dirty boss/employee smut! I assumed going in that I wouldn’t be getting anything too deep, and I was correct in my assumption — and that’s great because I wasn’t disappointed! It was fun for what it was, bordered on wrong in general, and was a definitely an inappropriate jerk boss/in need employee situation. I enjoyed it for the fun dose of escapism it was.

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Christina and Bill’s story. Christina needs a day off work and Bill is her jerk boss who has been lusting for and in love with her for years. Bill blurts out his inner dirty thoughts when she requests off and that ends in a hot encounter that leaves him wanting more. They end up in agreement to have more encounters in exchange for a significant raise that Christina is in need of to help pay for a caregiver for her grandfather. There are some hot sexy times and stronger feelings start to develop...and they get a HFN ending.

Point Of View (POV): This alternated between Christina and Bill’s POV.

Overall Pace of Story: Good (except abrupt ending). I never skimmed.

Instalove:No, but they both had strong feelings for one another when this begins (H admits in inner dialogue that he loves her right away and the h doesn’t recognize her feelings)

H (Hero) rating: 3 stars. He was alright. I never felt like I fully understood what type of person he was supposed to be.

h (heroine) rating: 3.5 stars. Christina. I liked her more, but I still felt like I didn’t tap into much depth with her character.

Sadness level: Low, no tissues needed

Push/Pull: Yes

Heat level: Hot. They have some hot tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story.

Descriptive sex: Yes

OW (Other Woman)/OM (Other Man) drama: No

Sex scene with OW or OM: No

Cheating: No

Separation: Yes

Possible Triggers: Yes

Closure: This had an abrupt ending that I would call HFN ? Not enough closure for me because the conflict was resolved way too easily IMO and then it goes right into an epilogue that didn’t have anything really to do with their relationship (other than her job)

Me at the beginning: "Wow, I don't think I can read a hero named Bill."

Me after one chapter: "Is it hot in here? Why am I sweating so much? Why can't I breathe?"

This book is literally insane. Like...HR nightmare, for sure. BUT...I'm starting to kinda think everyone should have to fuck their boss to get a day off. I mean, if it's gonna be that hot?

Did this book have much of a plot without the sex? No. Other than a slight detour into stray dogs, tortillas on top of the car, and a hoarding situation. But it makes sense given that it originated on an erotica website. Still, this was hot, fun, and unbelievably sexy for those who like the idea of transactional relationships turning real.

I can't believe it took me this long to read something so deliciously filthy. This has a paperback and I'm trying to figure out if it's appropriate to put it on my wishlist for Mother's Day presents...I'm gonna go with yes.

Edit: Fuck it, I've re read this and it's getting upgraded to 5 stars because gosh darn it, it's unique and hot plus I enjoy imagining it's Jon Hamm who is the ultimate BDE.

Anyway...my original review:

At the risk of sounding like Paris Hilton... That was hot.

Was not really sure what I was in for when starting this and it really jumps straight into it to the point I think I gasped at one particular scene because omg...did he really just ask that?? 😂

So yep, I really enjoyed a book about workplace sexual harassment but this author really made it work and the inner monologue actually had me cracking up.

Bill was an unlikely hero but damn do I love the silent ones who only need a few hot words to raise the temperature. Christina was also a great h, honestly her inner monologue was the best.

Exact age wasn't mentioned for the H but there is an implied age gap which lately is catnip for me.

Go on.
Take it out.
You heard me.
Swallow.
She blew through a stop sign and swore. What the actual fuck is happening to me?

I was beguiled by Eris Adderly’s writing when I read her Skull & Crossbones Romances series, and Gallows Pole sealed the deal for me. The dark, gritty atmosphere, the feelings she evokes, characters come to life, beautiful prose and poetic turns of phrase. And damn, can she write raw, intense, smokin hot sex. For real.

I was reluctant to read this because I read historical romance; I’m not at all into contemporary but a few of my friends read it and loved it so I thought, why not?

Once again, I was impressed by the way the author weaves atmosphere through her stories. East Texas, pick up trucks, a dusty, slightly trashy trailer rental business, the heat, a blue collar working man sort of (anti) hero... I wasn’t just reading about it, I was there.

I didn’t feel strongly about Christina’s character one way or the other but Asshole Bill? Oh.My.God. He was definitely the star of the story for me. Don’t ask me how I could possibly be hot for a man who begins the story by using his employee’s desperation for time off as a way to coerce sexual favors, but damn, I had it bad for Bill.

“You’ll make it up?” Why did it sound like a threat? Still, she nodded at the sliver of hope. “I will.” “Okay, Christina Lee.” His voice was quieter than its usual bark, and it made her insides curl. “You can make it up by bending that pretty little ass over this table for me. Right now. Or you can quit whining and come in tomorrow. And you won’t bring this shit up ever again.” Her jaw hung slack.

“Reach back and lift up your skirt.” The voice was closer still. Christina swallowed. She was just supposed to bend over. When had this become some fucked up game of Simon Says? She reached back, began gathering fabric. “All the way up. Over your ass.”

Make no mistake, Bill was an asshole. But then… a stray dog shows up and…

And where was stoic, Asshole Bill? Bent down to magic his hands all around the furry face, a circus of I’m-not-touching-you, while the dog’s eyes rolled wild and it snorted with open-mouthed glee trying to catch the flying fingers. Christina caught herself smiling, and shook her head.

He was leaning over. Saying something, but it wasn’t his voice. It was a higher pitch than Christina knew, and had almost … its own rhythm. Was he … was he babytalking that dog?

Hmmm, so there’s more to Bill than meets the eye. Much more. I won’t give away more so that you can unwrap Bill all on your own, but I have to say I love love loved being inside Bill’s head:

You’re goddam lucky she’s not gonna be here tomorrow. How you gonna walk around the shop, hard as trigonometry all day? Fuck.

***

Not that he was blaming Christina. She was just doing like he asked, wearing a dress. Wasn’t her fault his dick was acting like a kid begging for candy at a grocery store check-out stand.

***

There were parts of him surfacing now around Christina, however, that Bill Marshall didn’t know what to do with. He was … aggressive. Making demands. Move your feet apart. Hold still. Swallow. Look at me. Bill’s jaw tightened. It wasn’t the commands. It was her obeying him. Those blue eyes wide and wary, asking ‘What else? What else will he want me to do?’ and braving it anyway. This was dangerous. She fed into the part of him that wanted to flex power. How much did he have? How far would she let him go? It could be a drug, testing those limits, and keeping the fuck away from cigarettes was already enough of a chore.

***

There was nothing left in the world for him but those blue eyes. It wasn’t awkward or weird. It was an event horizon, and he was gone.

No way did I think this was going to be a love story. But… it was. Really. Filthy dirty raw lusting fucked up real love. And there was a beauty in that love that I never expected.

I could not put this book down! I got absolutely nothing done yesterday except to devour this story.

I want to thank my GR friends Emtee and Merry for their wonderful reviews that popped up on my feed, prompting my curiosity and me deciding to give it a shot. To be honest, at first glance of the title I was hesitant that it would be a porn-fest with very little story and lots of ass-related activities 😂

But it wasn’t like that at all. I mean there was a little back door action (not my favorite to read about) but there was so much more to this story. It was just so real. I honestly felt the emotions, heart pings and love that grew between the two of them. They were relatable people dealing with normal everyday issues that surround us. This author writes so well, I COULD hear the gravel crunch as cars drove in, I could imagine everything she was describing and the inner dialogues were extremely realistic.

To quote my GR friend Merry, “….more than just smut. Some mainstream authors write sex scenes to fill page counts. This author makes the pages fly”

The setting is not your typical NYC office, CEO living in a high-rise penthouse with panorama views. It was a truck rental shop similar to U-Haul (?) privately owned by our hero in dusty eastern Texas town. I emphasize the privately owned, as there is no HR department 😂

Enter our cranky ass hero, Bill Marshall. On one hand I was happy to see such a regular name for such a regular guy. No trendy Jaxon, Elliot, Carson or Cameron here. But, lol every time his name was mentioned, it made me think of Jim Carrey from In Living Color, ‘Fire Marshall Bill’. (So I made myself picture Tom Hardy instead 😍)

Looking back, the author did not put a lot of emphasis on describing the physical traits, I’m not sure what Bill actually looked like besides being physically fit. And the heroine had blond hair. But to me, that was ok for once. It highlighted to me that their focus of attraction wasn’t based solely off of their looks, but how they were attracted to just each others being.

This excerpt describes Bill perfectly though: “He didn’t like the fake feeling of ‘small talk’ and extraneous fluff. Pointless greetings, the placation of ass-kissing. People called that ‘blunt’. He wouldn’t tolerate lies or bullshit. He’d put his finger right on the nose of what was really going on. People called that ‘harsh’. He had zero patience for idiots. He would not wait around, he would not bite his tongue. People called that ‘being an asshole’.” (So I guess I’m an asshole too then 😖)

Bill had it bad. He about had a heart attack from any possible sign from Christina that she was attracted to him. “There were pieces of his psyche urging him to be romantic, but Bill was high as a kite on this woman, and the rest of him ran roughshod.” And another…. “God, she fucking wants you. Christina wants you.” But based off his stoic cranky personality, you would never guess at his insecurities and vulnerabilities underneath. Like a wounded animal lashing out. My favorite type of hero, to watch him unravel, heal, trust and love.

The heroine was perfect as well. Yes, she starts off maybe looking like a doormat, not saying NO… but she had her reasons and I felt they were valid. Plus, she was attracted to him (but just didn’t know it yet). This was maybe an insta-sex story, but it was NOT insta-love! Hence the title, they went backwards in their way around starting a relationship. It starts off seemingly wrong and dirty, but I could not wait to see what was next, and next again, etc. Not much conversations going in the beginning either, lots of awkwardness and nervous glances on the heroines part, but it added to the anticipation to the plot. Loved it. Lol and her name was Christina Dodd (the same as a famous historical romance writer).

One of my favorite parts was the rule that the heroine set: No kissing on the mouth. I love when this rule is used, it adds so much to the sexual tension and when someone finally breaks the rule, it’s explosive. 💥

And this author mentioned Katydids! I’ve never met anyone else that calls them katydids, everyone always calls them lightening bugs (which is wrong! 😂)

Can’t wait to find some of this authors other books!

Asshole Bill. HR NIGHTMARE.
He’s not an asshole (okay maybe he is) just a man in love who wanted to get the girl any way he could. The perfect opportunity presented itself when Christina Lee ——who gives as good as she gets—— needed a day off. All she had to do was lay flat against the table and perhaps have her boss be her obgyn for the day? The things you do for love. Sigh. I’m in love with Miss Eris writing, dialogues and how organic everything this novel is. Very original. Thank you Isabella for the recommendation!!!

Oh my fucking god this is the best unromantic romance I’ve read in a long time. No strike that last bit, that I’ve read ever, period, full stop, the end. I want me an ass-hole like Bill Marshall, I want to be some foolish man’s Christina Lee.

I spent a good 70% of this book hot and bothered, 20% wanting to bash heads and the last 10% ugly crying and snivel-sobbing in the happiest of ways. I bloody loved grumpy AF Bill and adored on-a-knives-edge-to-insanity Christina. This couple couldn’t have been more wrong for each other and yet so very perfect for each other too.

Only a very small amount of this book doesn’t involve either scenes between Bill and Christina or ones on their own thinking about, lusting over or puzzled by the other. We do get a few scenes of Christina with her Pops, plus a couple of Bill at home. Mostly we are at Haul Ash Truck and Trailer Rental (I loved that name by the way and all the geeky references too), at the back end of nowhere, Texas.

Those were her favorites, she found. The stories where the heroine hated her love interest at the beginning. It was oh-so-satisfying to read, but that shit didn't happen in real life. Personalities in Assholedom tended to remain in Assholedom. It was Newton's little know First Law of Fuckboys; she was pretty sure of that.

Normally in a romance I want lots of background on and detail about my characters, so that I can get to know and care about them. (See that Eris Adderly , Bill and Christina Lee belong to me now!). However the truth of the matter is that this intense and focused plot, this pared down to the bone story didn’t need anything extra. Every single page dripped with emotion and the book gave me ALL the feels – especially those ones that require one handed reading 😉. TMI? #Sorry,NotSorry!

There is nothing about this book that fits any stereotype or cliche of the romance genre. Even after having read it I still don’t understand how the author made this story work but she did. She aced it, hit the ball out the park, broke the rules and carved her own path.

The relationship starts off wrong, it continues badly, neither communicates a damn useful word to the other (though looks, sighs and moans can say an awful lot too), they don’t even really know just exactly what they are hoping for, and they damn well are not going to go there with any of it. But there is exactly where they do go, so the question now is, just what are they going to do about it?

You DO need to find out the answer to that, and you need to find that answer by reading Bass-Ackwards. So stop what you’re doing and go read it now!

5 glorious smutty stars.

Ok ill be real with yall; I took one look at the cover, read the synopsis, and figured this was going to be another cring book of the ever growing 2020 dumpster fire DNF pile. For real, books have been TRASH this year and it makes me angry because this used to be such a great escape to take my mind off things.

But this is without a doubt one of my favorite reads of 2020.

2 weeks ago I posted a status about wanted a book with a working class hero, and this literally just fell into my lap. Do you know how happy this makes me to read a book with...

- Middle class hero that works a 9-5
- Isnt a million/billionaire
- Doesnt live in an expensive pent house
- Isn't a manwhore
- Thinks the heroine is out of HIS league.
- has a normal human-man sized penis
- Isnt made out to be overly attractive/beautiful.
- Has a normal goddam name. I am TIRED of Brayden/Killian/Damon/Stone/Flame/whatever names
- The very first sentence of his POV is how he's "stupid in love with the heroine"

God, I could yell off a mountain top with joy! :: Chef's Kiss::

But seriously I loved everything about this. From the rude and grumpy hero with a heart of gold underneath, to the heroine that was strong and loving and not annoying. To the way the hero has been in love with the heroine for years before she even had a single clue. To the work environment where these people have actual real-life jobs and the heroine wasnt just the hero's personal assistant. It also had this *great* forbidden element to it, where the H just takes what he wants and the heroine is turned on by it.

Oh can I also mention the fact that this book didn't have annoying side character/BFF convos? It was fantastic.

I will 100000% be re-reading this many times over.

Safety: Depending on personal preferences

No cheating, no OW/OM drama, no OP after meeting.
H has an ex-wife and she's only brought up once, isnt made out to be a meanwhile
Heroine wasnt a virgin
Dubious consent in the beginning, but lots of really hot sex scenes.
2 month separation/ break up
Marriage proposal at the end

I was expecting this to be deliciously naughty. And it was. 🔥 However, I wasn’t expecting sweetness with that. Bill Marshall absolutely was an asshole, and when Christina Lee Dodd got in a tight situation, he took advantage in the biggest asshole way possible.

But I was thrown by the things he was thinking and feeling while acting like an utter dick.

This book is aptly titled, because everything did happen completely bass-ackwards. Despite that, it ended just fine. 🥰

Thanks once again to Elfonso Twinkletoes, I genuinely enjoyed reading this! 💕

Listen. If you read the first chapter (no doubt with your mouth agape) and immediately hit “Return to Kindle,” no judgment here. I get it. And even if you keep going, you will definitely feel uncomfortable.

I kept going, because someone whose bookish opinions I trust implicitly recommended it, and… reader, I loved it.

This book will challenge you for sure. “Employee screws employer in exchange for a day off” could have been written in a way that made it disgustingly offensive and misogynistic, but Eris Adderly is a damn decent writer. Her prose is good—spare and understated—and I think she justifies the characters’ behaviors. I think the character work was great, actually. It turns into quite a sweet love story.

It is also insanely hot, of course. INSANELY.

So yeah. I won’t be recommending this to my sister, but I will for sure read it again.

“You are my deal. I’m a wretched sonovabitch without you, Christina Lee Dodd, and if you don’t marry me, I don’t know what the fuck I’m gonna do.”

what in the ninth-hour breakup! like … Bill, my man … whatcha doing ???

* * *

Well that was hot! Another review that I read put it really well. This was pretty much a super sexy version of Luna and the Lie. Basically less inner monologuing, the heat turned up to 11, and POV from both the hero and heroine.

Bass-Ackwards was a short sexy read that I really enjoyed a lot more than I thought I would. And honestly I wouldn't have minded a bit more conversation between Bill and Christina Lee but I don't think that's the kind of book this was ;)

--> who knew u-haul's could be hot ;) or maybe they're only hot if Bill works there ;)

The opening chapter is WTF and it doesn’t let up. This is one wild work place romance. Well romance is not really the right word. This is sexual harassment 101 and I was completely down with it. I was either laughing out loud, hot and bothered, or a little creeped out I’m not gonna lie. This is SOOOO entertaining. I loved this and highly recommend it. 5 so totally wrong yet totally right stars.
