An Uphill Battle (Southern Roots) Kindle Edition
Azalea Barnes has hated Drake Collins since the day he broke her teenaged heart.
Fast forward almost seven years later and her libido still hasn't gotten the memo.
Now they're frenemies... with benefits.
Which suits Azalea just fine. She gets what her body craves while keeping her heart safe.
Kind of.
Mostly.
Drake has loved Azalea since the day they met. He knows that she's his forever. Too bad she only sees him as a good time. He wants more. Needs more.
If only he could convince her that it's real this time. He's more determined than ever to prove to Azalea that chemistry like theirs doesn't exist only in the bedroom.
The odds may be against Drake, but he's prepared for an uphill battle.

About the author

★⋆★NOW LIVE: DIRTY LITTLE SECRET★⋆★
A new adult older brother's best friend/second chance romance.
LK Farlow (A.K.A Kate) is a small town girl with a love for words. She’s been writing stories for as long she can remember. A Southern girl through and through, Kate resides in beautiful, sunny LA—that’s Lower Alabama, y’all—with her amazing husband and four rambunctious children. When she’s not writing, you can find her snuggled up on the couch watching car shows while she crochets or with her nose in a book.

- Reviewed in Australia on 17 January 2018I received An Uphill Battle as an ARC this was the first time I had read this author. But let me tell you wow just wow. This story had me in hook line and sinker. Drake and Azalea's story was an epic love battle that was a fairytale mixed with moments of sadness. Reading this story was a fairytale in its own right everyone deserves their happily ever after right? Fate always has a plan and no matter how hard you push it pushes you right back.
Enjoy reading this fairytale and battle of love
- Reviewed in Australia on 21 January 2018Verified PurchaseThe second book in LK Farlow’s Southern Roots series, An Uphill Battle, is a brilliant “frenemies” (friends who act like enemies) to lovers romance. Drake and Azalea have known each for years and despite a long simmering attraction the timing hasn’t ever been right. I really enjoyed reading the journey that these two characters go on to discover whether each other is worth the wait or if things just aren’t meant to be.
Author Kate Farlow has shown great improvement in her writing - something that was clear to me having only read her debut novel a week ago. And while in the middle of the book I was concerned there was some “drama for the sake of drama”, I was satisfied in how it was all resolved and on reflection the conflict did, in fact, help Drake and Azalea’s story. I loved the characterisation of both leads and I felt their backgrounds really shaped the way in which they reacted to the events in An Uphill Battle.
And I am keen to read the next book(s) in the Southern Roots series as I’m hoping that Seraphine and Magnolia get their own stories soon as well. I’m looking forward to watching Kate grow and improve further as an author - something I really love doing as a reader of so many indie romance authors.
- Reviewed in Australia on 17 January 2018I am being complimentary when I say I found this story to be a soap opera in book format. I am unsure if this was the author’s intention but that’s the impression I got and, and it actually works.
It’s not a spoiler to say that lack of communication is THE BIGGEST issue that Drake and Azalea face in this book. Their sheer stubbornness and cluelessness made me want to yell at them or knock their heads together, preferably both. And I think that’s a testament to the author’s writing that even though I felt frustration at times, I wasn’t inclined to figuratively throw the book at the wall. I was eager to read further and discover how many ways they could wilfully as well as unwittingly sabotage their relationship.
My one criticism plot-wise is what felt like an about-face in Azalea’s hesitation in embarking on a relationship with Drake.
I found this to be a light read overall and a great way to while away a couple of hours. I hope that Simon and Magnolia get a book of their own. Their hidden past interests me and they seem like they’d make a good couple.
- Reviewed in Australia on 20 April 2020Ahh these characters got me glued to this book. Very well written
- Reviewed in Australia on 17 January 2018Holy moly what a roller coaster ride of emotions! I read this book in one sitting, the second it hit my kindle. There were times when I wanted to slap both Azalea and Drake upside the head for their stupidity and misunderstandings but it certainly made the story interesting!
Completely itching for the next book!
- Reviewed in Australia on 21 September 2019Ive read a number of LK Farlows books including the first book in this series which I loved, but this book just didn't do it for me.
I found Drake really annoying! The fact that he threw other girls in Azaleas face and let them treat her like crap didnt portray a man deeply in love.
Felt like Azalea was treated like crap by everyone including her closest friends, helping or encouraging Drake to hurt her. I really didnt think she was the one who needed to grow up. It was everyone else. And everyone calling her a little girl straight up just peed me off! Poor girl had her heart stamped all over and had other woman flaunted in front of her on purpose to give to give her a false idea and then shes the one blamed for jumping to conclusions.
She was a huge support for her best friend in the first book and I felt like no one had her back in this one not even Simon whos supposed to be her big brother!! And then she takes the blame when its not her fault and then gets interrogated by the two other woman that Drake has spent time making her jealous with. Yeah nah! Dum! Id tell those biarches to take a hike along with Drake.

5.0 out of 5 stars LK Farlow is an amazing writer.
Verified PurchaseFrom the start, I was hooked. Loved Azalea and Drake's hinted connection in CUR, so I was super excited to get their story.
Holy. Hell. I'm not a fan of rollercoasters, but this was one of the best rides of my life.
LK Farlow is a beautiful writer. Not only are her stories phenomenal in their plot and with their characters, but the words themselves are poetic. This is only her second book and I'm not going to lie, she puts more experienced authors to shame. There isn't a single aspect of this book that I didn't love.
The push and pull. The back and forth. The love and hate. Both between Azzy and Drake, and me and LK. I wanted to throw things at her for real. She was killing me. Taunting and teasing me with their story. And. It. Was. Perfect.
If it's possible, I love AUB more than CUR. Having the whole gang there, and it being about all of them, while still focusing on Azzy and D? I'm running out of words for how amazing this story is, and how well-written it is. But that to me is what makes an incredible writer. And an absolutely fan-freaking-tastic story. None of the characters were flat. Not the main characters, and not the side characters. They all added a little something, and even alluded to the possibility of their own individual stories. Which I am impatiently awaiting.
I love how you can tell that LK knows what she's talking about when it comes to the setting of the story and also their occupations. And I seriously hear their accents in my head as I read, which adds to the authenticity of the story.
Like I said, there isn't a single aspect about Azalea and Drake's story that I didn't love, except maybe that there wasn't an epilogue that had it end in exactly the way I wanted it to. But to be honest, the way AUB ended was perfect for them.
Totally on #TeamDrazzy for life.

3.0 out of 5 stars Normally I like this author
Verified PurchaseI gave this book three stars. Normally I really like this author and I’ve liked her author series. This book though, the whining by the heroine was just too much for me. They both should have moved on.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Uphill Battle was a fun fast read for me
Verified PurchaseAn Uphill Battle was a fun fast read for me. I didn't realize that this was the second book in a standalone series but now I really need to go one click book 1 ASAP! While I think this book worked great as a standalone I think I would have loved it even more had I read book 1 first since these characters are so amazing.
There were definitely moments that made me want to grab a hold of Azalea and Drake to shake some sense into them but that is kind of what made the story much more fun. Even their friends didn't help stop some of the crazy misunderstandings that were going on between them but since I really enjoyed all of the characters they just added to how much I liked this story.
Both Drake and Azalea are under the assumption that the other one is only interested in using the other for a good time and nothing more. The problem is that both of them actually have real feelings for the other one and just never seriously talk about it. This makes for some pretty interesting moments between the two of them as well as some super steamy ones since their chemistry is off the charts. Right when I thought things were going to happen for them an old flame pops back up and throws a wrench in the system. Things aren't always what they seem though and there are a few surprises around the corner.
A must read book for sure!- By Alisa

5.0 out of 5 stars Explosive!!
Verified PurchaseDrake and Asalea communicates one way he gets under her skin. She is mad at him for an incident that happy ack in high school. Azalea has had a crush on him since she was a teenager. She was all attitude and fiery. Drake has had a thing for her but the timing was never right. At a party Azalea found Drake and they started making out until his girlfriend showed up. Azzyjo left the room in tears. After that she didn’t trust Drake. Over the years he has made comments and flirted with her. She just doesn’t believe him but when he touches her it’s electric. So many times he comes on to her but she just doesn’t believe him. That back and forth between them is tiring. They don’t communicate and things gets all twisted. Definitely worth reading. I got mad at both characters. Damn they were making me mad. Definitely worth reading.
