For years, Portia was all I'd had. For as long as I could remember, she'd been all I ever wanted. Her past was as twisted as my own, the meaning of the word family tangled into something unrecognizable. We didn't share blood or DNA, but the unbreakable bond of being two people who knew all too well the pain and uncertainty of being castaway in the foster system. Her story had a happy ending. Mine had resulted in tragedy. Now, we were forced together under the blurred branches of a twisted family tree.I wasn't her brother. They weren't my parents. But Portia was still off-limits.Even though she was the love of my life, admitting that could cost me everything... **Family Ties is a heart-wrenching and angsty step-brother romance about the rights and wrongs of young adult love. If you love heart-breaking, angst-filled, beautiful YA romance, you'll love Stephie Walls' Family Ties. **

‪Family Ties is, hands down, the best book I’ve read all year! The angst, heartbreak, and hard topics that Stephie Walls intricately balance with humor, love, and hope create a beautifully written story that will leave you breathless. ‬
‪I knew going in that this author writes books that are always much deeper than the blurb portrays. Family Ties still managed to catch me off guard and completely wrecked me within the first chapter. Three hours later I’d made it to Chapter 3. I can read an entire book in three hours, but Family Ties decimated my heart in the first three chapters. For me, good books get devoured, but great books require an additional level of processing. Family Ties is a great book.‬
‪Told from both Portia and Jude’s perspectives, their journey from friendship to more is an enthralling, tear jerking, all encompassing tale. “‬Portia didn’t try to make a hasty exit or encourage me to put on a brave face. Just as she’d done since the day we met, she accepted me exactly as I came to her—broken.” But ‪their imperfect parts compliment each other in ways that aren’t always for the best. “‬I could feast on her body, get drunk on her scent, and swallow her affection for days. There was no doubt in my mind, I could starve to death trying to survive on Portia.‪” ‬
‪Without revealing any spoilers, I’ll simply say that Stephie Walls has created a masterpiece. I’ve considered another author as the queen of angst for years, but Stephie Walls has taken that title. Family Ties by Stephie Walls is a tissues required, MUST READ, angst filled shot of whiskey.‬ It’s gonna burn all the way down.

This forbidden love story gave me much more of an emotional punch than I was expecting. Being foster siblings was not the only thing keeping Jude and Portia from being a couple. They also had their own individual struggles to deal with, especially Jude and this book reads like a coming of age story as we see these characters undergo personal growth throughout these pages.

Jude and Portia meet as kids when they end up with the same foster parents for very different reasons. While Portia grows up with these foster parents, Jude actually comes and goes during his childhood depending on how well his mother is able to care for him at any given time. Regardless, they stay very close to each other even when they don't live together. In that sense, I don't think think this book is that forbidden. While people regarded them as siblings sometimes, these two were more like friends who fell in love. Mind you though, I do read a lot of forbidden, so maybe that's why this one didn't phase me that much.

We do get the sexual tension and excitement when they hide their relationship from their foster parents and they were quite bold with the risks they took. Their relationship had the added strain of Portia being a year older and away at college while Jude was still at home in high school. As an immature adolescent dealing with grief, Jude struggled with Portia being away and meeting new friends, especially guys.

I loved how the author took us on a journey of seeing these characters mature before they were able to find their HEA. The issues of grief were dealt with very well and I felt like I experienced everything with Jude. His pain and anguish and then his anxiety as he waited on Portia to come to him. I loved his character so much and what an amazing experience watching him grow from boy to man. This was definitely a unique romance story with a taste of the forbidden that I would recommend.

Oh Wow!! Just Wow!!!
"Family Ties" By Stephie Walls was friggin amazing; like sooo good.
It's an angsty coming of age story; with blurred boundaries lines and an almost forbidden attraction between two vulnerable young adults just trying to navigate lives obstacles while existing in a world of chaos where their path in life is still waiting to be forged and the coming chapter is still yet to be written.
Clinging like a lifeline in a storm to each other; Portia and Jude's destinies have been intertwined since a young age.
Both entering each other's life at a critical time these two share an unimaginable bond; foster siblings and confidantes since the day they met.
Shared Experiences and life’s lessons Portia and Jude share a bond like no other.
But what happens when these feelings start to morph into something more.
When one is almost more broken than the other can deal with and when the one who makes your soul sing is the very last person society believes you should be with.
So, This was such a beautiful and at times heartbreaking tale.
From the moment I started reading this, I was transfixed with fascination and delight; never have I wanted someone to win at life as much as these two.
I can not find anything about this story I actually disliked; it ticked every one of my boxes and more.
A raw and emotional tale that leapt of these pages capturing my heart with its magical and emotive Prose.
this slow build style of narration really did work here; building an atmosphere of almost hopeful anticipation with its smouldering low burner approach; I loved and adored every expected moment. Every twist and turn this took to arrive at its eventual end game.
At times this awakening wasn't always pretty or correct, but what this journey definitely was at its core was honest.
I can not recommend this story enough it was so thought-provoking and real and its one that will certainly stick in my mind for a long time to come.
This is an author I have never experienced before and she has undoubtfully scored a new fan in me; so impressed with this excellent piece of fiction; Bravo.
Thank You to the Author for providing me with an ARC copy of "Family Ties" of which I have reviewed voluntary.
All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

4 Lemon Pie Stars!

Stephie Walls just earned herself another reader for all her words. Family Ties is the first book I’ve read by her, and as cliche, as it sounds, it won't be my last.

I'm a sucker for a good forbidden romance, I've read a lot of them but Family Ties certainly stands out with her beautiful prose, flawed characters, and an imperfect tale of love, family ties and all.

Not every book is perfect—I had a hard time relating to Portia, for me, she was selfish, but as I flip the pages of the story, I understood her, I felt her, and at the end, I couldn't agree more with her. But despite my feelings toward her, I never doubt that she belonged to Jude. Walls did a great job making me root for them.

Jude and Portia struggled not only with the forbidden factor in their relationship but with the pain of losing someone. Grief doesn't come in stages, and it's not the same for everyone. Unfortunately, Jude's way of dealing with it was not the right one, causing a rupture in the relationship. Gawd, how I suffered reading those chapters! I wanted to vagina punched Portia and hug my baby Jude.

Did I mention that Jude was a bookworm? OMG! He has read E.L. James! He was an introvert, music lover, and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVEEEEE HIM!

Did I also mention that the secondary characters were ah-mazing? The parents, Ethan, Carson, Jet, BARTTTTTTTTTT!!! Dear Stephie Walls, I'd give you my left arm to get Bart's story.

Unputdownable. Family Ties grabbed me by the throat early on with a forbidden, yet sweet romance that delivered all the feels. Sadness, anger, angst, hope and happiness, I felt it all.

Family Ties
By: Stephie Walls
4 Lemon Pie Stars

I absolutely love the way Stephie Walls can draw you into a book just by the blurb. This book is exactly what the blurb states…

I wasn’t her brother.
They weren’t my parents.
Not that it mattered…

She was off limits.

Portia was placed with her foster family after she lost her mother from drugs. She was adopted by the loving couple who raised her since that day.

Jude was a in and out foster child. With no other family, he was placed in the home when his mother’s illness spiked.

Years have gone by; Jude and Portia were the children that Hensley and Ernie could never have. Family vacations, school functions, family dinners…they raised Jude and Portia like they were their own children.

When feelings get to be too much for these two to hide, is it truly wrong that they want to be together? Even though everyone sees them as brother and sister?

It’s a battle of right and wrong in their minds. Right because it feels so good when they are together. Wrong because they’ve been raised as brother and sister.

It’s a tug of war, back and forth, should we or should we not. Reasons vs. Doubt. Which side will win? At what cost to the people who have raised you as their own.

The Heart Wants What The Heart Wants
Let me start by saying that love follows no boundries, no age, no relations. It's wonder when Portia and Jude, foster kids in Shaw home, just stumble & fall in love. It's messy, conflicting, tearing, slaying love
This was the Portia I’d loved as a kid, through the various awkward stages of puberty, and now into adulthood—although each with a different passion.

description

Hearts oscillate between should we/shouldn't we constantly, which became annoying but I tota Lily get it. Social restrictions ,Tabboo relationship, which is technically not forbidden, but they are young kids. Moral compass is going haywire, physical reactions belie sensible morals.
I wasn't her brother
They weren't my parents
Not that it mattered......
She's off limits

At times, maybe few only, Portia seemed self absorbed and childish. Jude was angry and frothing with jealousy more than she was.  But at least he read smut. #GoJude!!
Pick up this slow burn story and watch your heart twist & hurt

4.5 stars!

A beautifully emotional sort-of forbidden romance between two foster siblings with an undeniable chemistry and an incredible love for each other. Dramatic and heartfelt with just the right amount of angst, I loved this one!

Jude and Portia grew up as semi-foster siblings. Portia was adopted into a loving family following the death of her drug-addicted mother, and Jude’s own mother was sick, necessitating him entering occasional foster care, and he was accepted with open and loving arms by Portia and her adoptive parents. For years they grew up side by side, their families spending holidays, birthdays and special occasions together, the two of them the best of friends, creating a bond and becoming an important and necessary part of each other’s lives. And at 17, Jude’s mother died and he went to live with the Shaws and now-19-year-old Portia full time.

Jude and Portia always shared a special relationship, but over the years things shifted for both of them. Far from the bond of a brother and sister, they share a soul-deep love for each other which leads to all sorts of confusion – they are both very certain of what they feel for each other, but they know that the rest of the world views them of brother and sister, even though they don’t share blood or any familial feelings whatsoever.

Things were black and white for me, although I could see from an outsider’s perspective how the morality of my feelings for Portia might blend into unidentifiable shades of grey.

So here is their battle. But what they feel is undeniable, and when they finally take that step and share their feelings with each other, all of the love they share for each other finally has an outlet and is able to be expressed, and they easily and effortlessly fall into something that is special, all-consuming and life-changing for them both.

Jude and I hadn’t talked about what was going on between us. We just let it happen on its own accord, and it was better than anything I’d ever experienced. He was safe – his arms, how close we were, there were no secrets. I’d never had that level of security with anyone in my life other than Jude, and it had been that way since we were kids. Adding in the physical and romantic part only added to the depth of the love I’d had for him for years. And without saying it, there was no doubt he felt the same.

It’s beautiful, it’s real, it's passionate, and it’s so gorgeously romantic. I could feel the connection between Jude and Portia, and I loved every moment of them together – wanting them to have what they so both desperately wanted.

“I need you, Portia. In a way I'm not sure I even understand. Everything about you makes me better. You create sunshine in a bleak world. You fill my heart and touch my soul. I'm invincible with you by my side.”

But perception is only a part of the struggle they need to overcome, and this story surprised me with its depth and intensity, and the storytelling is just amazing. It’s angsty and emotional, but it’s real. My heart ached for them, and though the story went in a direction I wasn’t expecting, it was so right for them, I was absolutely captivated all the way through, and I loved the way it all played out.

“Never doubt how much I love you … My heart is yours to keep.”

This is my first read by Stephie Walls, and I love the way she writes. She created two wonderful characters in Jude and Portia and I loved them both! And the side characters are well developed and bring a lot to the story – if she were to write a spin-off for Bart, I would be all over that!

I felt every moment of this book. The drama is real and emotional, and the love story is just gorgeous. It’s a beautiful, beautiful, story.

4.5 stars.

Family Ties is a different story then any others I've read by Stephie Walls. Families can be made up of different people who share no bloodline. The main factor in a family is the love. When 8-year-old Jude Thomas's Mom had to under go Cancer treatments, he was temporally placed in foster care and the home of Hensley and Ernie Shaw. The best foster parents any child would ever want. He also gained a 9-year-old foster sister named Portia. Through the years Jude and Portia grew to love each other. Complications began when the two of them found themselves “in love” with each other. I personally believe that people don't meet by accident. They are meant to cross our path.

Ever since Jude and Portia were just kids (him eight and her nine) he had welcomed the comfort that only Portia could give him. At seventeen Jude lost his mother, and he felt so lucky to have the Shaws to fall back on, but most of all Portia. All he knew for certain was that when two kids land in a house, scared and alone, they cling to each other because it's safer than the adults. But their feelings for each other, the love that grew over the years, was not the love of brother and sister, or even just friends. This is what filled this book with angst and worry. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Even though they were not related. They share foster parents, not blood. They are of no relation. But the fact they grew up together makes them siblings in other peoples eyes including their doting foster parents. Jude and Portia didn't talk much about what was happening between them, but knew to hide it from everyone. But what they had turned into love that was soul deep.
“I need you, Portia. In a way I'm not sure I even understand. Everything about you makes me better. You create sunshine in a bleak world. You fill my heart and touch my soul. I'm invincible with you by my side.”

If you like angsty, taboo and forbidden stories that make you nervous, then here is a book you will want to read for sure!!

Family Ties by Author Stephie Walls is friends-to-lovers, forbidden romance novel.

“I’d sell my soul for one more piece of lemon pie. And I’d dance with the devil to hear her sing another song.”

Jude has known Portia since they were children. Going in and out of the same foster home, she became a sister, of sorts, as they developed an innocent and compassionate love for one another.

“Nothing good could ever come out of me exploring anything with Jude or acknowledging just what that single kiss had done to me emotionally and physically. Mentally, I slammed the door shut and refused to keep the key.”

Family Ties was such an emotional ride. From the first pages of the Prologue until the final
line, I fell, head-over-heels, for this couple that, according to others, never should have been. Their relationship was sweet, precious, enduring, and heady. Nothing about it was awkward or out of place. They were each other’s souls, and their love was a direct reflection of the goodness deep inside them. Their dilemma was precarious and one that I feared would grow a head and try to destroy them. But in spite of the looming tension, I couldn’t help but lose myself In every desperate moment, as Portia and Jude met each challenge. For love. For themselves. For each other, never wavering in intent of devotion and mutual respect.

“I need you, Portia. In a way I’m not sure I even understand. Everything about you makes me better.” A tiny smile crept up her cheeks, and I kept confessing, hoping to earn a crooked grin. “You create sunshine in a bleak world. You fill my heart and touch my soul. I’m invincible with you at my side.”

I wanted to hug my Kindle to my chest and keep it there for hours after finishing this novel. It was that special. That lovely. Family Ties wasn’t perfect and easy love. It was love that had to be fought for, hard and with intensity. But the end result was a love to be cherished.

“This had the power to be the greatest love story of all time…or the greatest tragedy.”

Stephie has earned herself a new reader—I was completely consumed by Jude, Portia, and their story in Family Ties.
 photo IMG_2009_zpsu2v23dpq.jpg

The blurb doesn’t give much away—reading it, I only gathered it’d have that touch of the forbidden I absolutely love. However, that word doesn’t even scratch the surface—it was so much more than a forbidden romance between characters. It was a story of heartbreak, friendship, understanding, unconditional love, and ultimately...healing.

“I craved Jude against me, inside me, all over me. I needed it as much as I needed my next breath...”

Jude was hands-down my favorite. This story is Jude—him, his struggles, and the love he had for Portia. My heart literally ached for him. Oh, did it ever ache. It was a beautiful ache, and by the end, it absolutely soared.

“You create sunshine in a bleak world. You fill my heart and touch my soul. I’m invincible with you at my side.”

Family Ties is a story that rooted itself within my heart. An all-consuming, pull on the heartstrings, brilliant story that had me in a tangle of emotions. I simply loved it!

I’d also like to add, it put me in a 4 day long book hangover.

Sitting here after finishing Jude and Portia’s book and my heart is full. It wasn’t easy to read at some points because my heart broke for everything they have to go through to get to a beautiful ending, but I enjoyed the journey. It was real and raw but sweet and the perfect amount of forbidden feelings. I will say it wasn’t my favorite book by this author that I’ve read because at times it felt a little to YA for me, but at the same time it was a beautiful story. 4 stars #2OCCJD

Family Ties by Stephie Walls
4 stars!!!

“Never doubt how much I love you…or how long I will wait for you. My heart is yours to keep.”

Family Ties was a different kind of read from Stephie Walls, one that I didn’t expect, because once again, I went into this totally blind, I didn’t even read the synopsis. I love it when a book surprises you and when I saw where this one was going I was totally invested. This was a beautiful, emotional read from Stephie Walls, a forbidden love story of sorts when two foster siblings fall desperately and hopelessly in love. A love born from friendship and respect, from trust not given freely but earned and from insane chemistry that once admitted, could no longer be dismissed.

From a young age, Jude and Portia have always had a close friendship. Portia was the foster kid without any parents and ultimately was adopted by her foster parents. Jude was the kid with an incredibly sick mother, who would find himself with the same foster family time and time again when his mother was out of remission. Living together on and off, these two shared a close bond, they understood each other, they respected each other’s feelings and never diminished what they had. When Jude’s mother dies and they find themselves permanently together that friendship only intensifies. Jude shuts himself off and the only person that can chink through his emotional armour is, Portia.

“I was a Band-Aid when he needed a tourniquet. He was bleeding out, and instead of stopping the loss, I merely mopped up the pool.”

These two have never had familial feelings, despite what they might say to try and cover their true emotions. They have no blood ties, so as far as forbidden goes, there is nothing forbidden about it, however, their parents see them as siblings and it is this and what others think, knowing their situation that holds these two back from admitting what they have both known for years.

“Portia couldn’t grasp that without her, my nights never ended. The sun never rose. Days without her light weren’t days worth living.”

Stephie Walls deals with grief in this book and really brought home those emotions. The character connection was on point and Portia and Jude firmly imprinted themselves on my heart and soul. Both having come from totally different backgrounds yet find familiarity in where they end up. Both bounce of one and other and each buried into the others soul. Their connection was formidable, born from years and years of friendship, the perfect foundation for any relationship.

“Our family tree might have started off with different roots, but over the years our trunks had grown together until the branches now wove an artistic tapestry of love. It wasn’t born from DNA or bloodlines, but by choice. And we were all connected by those family ties.”

This book was beautiful, honest, intense and it was passionate, both in and out of the bedroom. A different twist to what I have read before and I couldn’t put it down. The bond between these two was unbreakable and despite their hesitancy they were only delaying the inevitable. I loved their foster parents, selfless, compassionate and so full of love, despite the lack of connected blood running through their children’s veins. Two people incredibly unlucky to not have their own, but who throw everything into the relationship they have with Jude and Portia. The love that flowed through them was palpable. This was a stunning story and was another great read from Stephie Walls.

Stephie Walls never ceases to amaze me. Every story is completely different then the last. There's no formula employed here, no two characters are alike and no two storylines anywhere near the same. I'll admit I haven't read all of her library but every book inspires me to take a dedicated Stephie Walls book club vacation. Probably near a beach.

Family Ties is truly astounding. The plight of Jude and Portia, their forbidden love, is so unique. Sure there's a "sister"/"brother" element but don't let that keep you away from this book. I promise it's completely plausible and acceptable. Early on in the book you'll find yourself rooting for a these two to see through the blinders of who they are to each other versus how they feel for each other. From the moment Portia heads off to college, your heart will be beating double time.

The story is delivered from both of their perspectives which is always my favorite. It just amps up the emotional tie to the characters. I loved them equally but I felt a certain tenderness to Jude. Jude knows what he feels, what he wants and is passionate about it. He's got a backstory that explains his intensity - he's loved and lost and life is simply too short. But he is a teenage boy battling typical hormonal surges and he makes some understandable mistakes. I found myself feeling protective of Jude and I love the young man he grew into.

The older and slightly wiser Portia is a little slower to admit to her feelings which makes for some great angst. She's always pretty clear about what she needs she just doesn't always go about it with the best sense. Her feelings run deep but she see's the writing on the wall:

"Nothing good could ever come out of me exploring anything with Jude or acknowledging just what that single kiss had done to me emotionally and physically. Mentally, I slammed the door shut and refused to keep the key."

She experiences some tough college moments but finds a great group of friends. But facing her feelings for Jude is really the least of her worries - They will test each other's resolve and devotion. and it feels like it will take a miracle to bring them together.

This story has an emotional depth that will keep you enthralled as you root for the stars to align, for Jude and Portia to find their ways through their beginning, rely on their friendship, and build a love story. I was captured from the very opening pages down the final lines of the book which begins with this beautiful and poetic musing " Our family tree might have started off with different roots, but over the years our trunks had grown together until the branches now wove an artistic tapestry of love."

Stephie Walls is a new author to me and I am happy to have read this story. The blurb intrigued me and I had to know what this story was going to tell me. First off this is not a taboo story at all. Secondly, this is a slow and emotional story that at some points I was about to put down many times but I am so happy I did not. The ending was well worth sticking out with it. Third, everything that happens in this story feels so real and true that tears were coming out of my eyes many times.

Jude and Portia are beautiful characters that needed to have a happy ever after, rather it was with each other or someone else. And there for a while, I wasn't sure which way it was going to go. And I won't tell you how it does end up, but I will say the journey is rough and hard, but they are strong enough to get through it.

This book deserves to be read.

Stephie Walls gave us another interesting read with Family Ties. This is a story about love, about family, about dealing with grief. Its a coming of age novel about two foster kids meeting as kids, becoming friends and eventually falling in love.
These character were complex and well-developed and I loved how we are taken on this journey with them, seeing them mature as we turn the pages.
This story was full of emotions and will give you all the feels. You will feel it all along with these characters. The secondary characters all added to the novel and provided great support to the main characters.
Told in dual POV, this novel will have you hooked from start to finish. You will enjoy this fantastic read. I loved it and would recommend it.

Family is a funny word. Some people think it means blood, some people think you choose your own.
For Jude and Portia, it means both.

Put in the foster system at a young age, they both grew up at the Shaw house (Jude going back and forth when his mom was well enough). While the world sees them as siblings, the two have a bond stronger than that. Acting on those feelings, now that they're all grown up, is harder than it seems.

I loved this story. From start to finish, it tugs at every emotion you can think of. It also draws you in so deep that you don't even realise you're reading (which are the best kind of books, let's be honest). Going between their POV's, we get a full glance at what exactly their bond is and a beautiful story of true love. 4.5 stars!

Every Stephie Walls book I have read is so unique and different to many other books I have read. Family Ties is complicated, Jude and Portia meet in Foster care, living with the loving couple Hensley and Ernie...the circumstances that bring these two kids together are vastly different. Told in dual POV, we are witness to an unconventional love story. I enjoyed this story, I got irritated with Portia and I got irritated with Jude but had to remind myself these two are only 18 and 19 y/o. I was sucked in right away, felt the story drug slightly 3/4 of the way through, but was smiling at the end.

An amazing 4.5 stars!! I really enjoy reading everything that this wonderful author writes.....it seems that she just knows what I like. This was one of those books that I literally didn't want to put down, I stayed up extra late just so I could finish it. It was beautiful and forbidden and everything else I could have wanted from a book.

This book was given to me at my request and I provided this review voluntarily

Stephie Walls is one of those authors that I'll read anything she writes. Regardless of the subject matter, I know I can count on her to deliver a solid story that's going to grip my heart. In this case, it punched my heart and left a mark.

Jude and Portia's story is the most touching thing I've read all year. Their story, how they came to know one another...seriously, this story gutted me. And when I was done, I sat and stared at the cover for the longest time. Such a fitting image for all this story is made up of.

I admit I had to hide the tears while I read certain parts. It made me think about what family really is and who is genuinely "your family" regardless of blood relation. I'm not sure how Stephie does it, pouring her heart into these gut-wrenching stories, but I'm so glad I discovered her books a long time ago. The message she delivers is one that will sit in your heart and make you think.

Clear out an afternoon because once you dive into this incredible story, you're not going to want to put it down. From start to finish, this is one of Stephie's best!

Family Ties is a beautifully written book. Stephie Walls definitely has a way with words! I thought this book was refreshing in that it showed a good side of foster parents. Often books show kids who were treated badly by foster parents and that experience shapes their adult life in a bad way. This book is completely different. The Shaws are an amazing couple who want to foster kids and end up with Jude and Portia. They do an excellent job in helping them through hard times and shaping them into the adults they become at the end of the book. Jude and Portia’s stories are similar but yet quite different also. They have to overcome a lot to be together. The characters are wise beyond their years, which is so nice to read about. You don’t want to miss reading about Portia and Jude and discovering whether or not they can find love with each other!

Epically emotional Family Ties had me grabbing the tissues one second and falling over from the heart melting romance the next. Delving deep into what makes a family and the reality of true love Jude and Portia’s story took me on a roller coaster of emotion. Even as children the bond between these two is undeniably powerful and growing older only shifted it into something much deeper. There is no way to describe the love they share other than epic!
What may seem taboo is truly not when it comes to Jude and Portia, so if you’re on the fence take that jump. Trust me, this book is overflowing with so many beautiful things it will take your breath away! I applaud Stephie Walls for creating a story unlike any other. Family Ties is not only beautifully moving, the story grips you from the very start and keeps you hooked until the end.

Family Ties by Stephie Walls is the story of Jude and Portia.
Both Jude and Portia were in foster care and ended up in the same home. Although Portia was adopted Jude came and went depending on his mother's health.
Although some would say this was a forbidding relationship I didn't feel that way. I felt more like they were close friends that had both went through a hardship and found a stable home that help save their childhood some.
Overall I really enjoy reading their story and will look for more books from this author.

Oh this story is special and take you through every emotion possible. I felt the heart break of a child losing a parent, the angst of teenagers learning to love, and young adults finding their purpose in life. Portia and Jude have a unique bond that not many will understand. Although I accepted it from the very beginning others may not but if you can look past it their journey is something so very special.

This specific video review will be included in the June 2018 wrap-up.

This book was amazing! It may have shredded me a bit with the angsty factor because of the quasi-taboo relationship that Jude and Portia stressed over. It's always easy to judge from the outside. But it's really hard to deny the impossible bonds and chemistry of this pair. I love Jude so much! This book is fabulous, you should read it, and remember lemon pie and cotton candy are life!

An ARC of Family Ties by Stephie Walls was provided to me in exchange for in honest review.

Family Ties by Stephie Walls is a coming-of-age story between our main two characters, Jude and Portia. Our main characters are two foster kids, who found their lives intertwined throughout the years of living together with their foster parents, Ernie and Hensley. During the years of being in one another's lives, Jude and Portia formed an unbreakable bond, a deep attachment to one another, one in which sometimes tested the bond of that said relationship. However, Jude and Portia didn't contemplate the romantic feelings developing between them. Their attraction to the other was taboo at best. They were supposed to be siblings, they practically grew up together, and they were living under the same roof. Of course, it didn't matter if they didn't really share blood. Everyone around them considers them siblings.

Ms. Walls does an awesome job writing the struggle that Jude and Portia are facing in light of their romantic feelings. Hurting their foster parents or rather in Portia's case, adopted parents, is the last thing on their mind. The two are constantly fighting their feelings, especially Portia. Speaking of Portia, she tries the dating game in College, but one bad experience leaves her confused and unclear of anyone's true intentions, even Jude's.

I have to say I liked the different circumstances in which Portia and Jude ended up with their foster parents. Jude certainly goes through a hard time processing his loss. He starts to act out, experiment a little. One incident creates tension between Jude and Portia, pushing their relationship almost to the breaking point, but eventually, it allows for Jude and Portia to explore what's really there between them.

The author really develops the ups downs of Portia and Jude's relationship. Their relationship is very intense, emotional. Both of them have different points of views on certain things in life. Neither of them were right nor wrong.

So, as a reader, it will be next to impossible to take sides. Jude has his vices and Portia has hers. I love how I was able to feel all the emotions that took hold of our characters. It wasn't easy to read at times. Readers' get ready for a rollercoaster ride. Ms. Walls shines best at depicting her characters trials and tribulations. It's beautifully written.

My absolutely favorite part of Family Times was definitely Jude's road to self-discovery. It works in the story's favor, especially for Jude's character. I don't want to have picks of which character I liked best since both were great individuals, but Jude was my pick. All his chapters tugged on my heartstrings. His character just had so many layers and the author truly peeled back those layers piece by piece.

I couldn't ask for a better ending. It was perfect in my opinion. It was as though everything came full circle. Both Jude and Portia are in a better place in their lives. They are surrounded by the most important people who matter to them.

Family Ties by Stephie Walls wholeheartedly deserves a five star rating⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐!
If I could rate this book higher then I would. Family Ties is certainly one of the best books of the year that I've had the pleasure of reading. Readers' you're going to love it. You won't be able to put it down. The story really grabs your attention.

Like Pink Cotton Candy and Lemon Pie!

By the end of very first chapter, I was drowning in a sea of emotions. By the second chapter, there was no turning back even if I wanted to. I had to know how this was going to play out. I found myself thinking of this book when I was doing daily chores. I was thinking about this book as I fell asleep at night, and I was thinking about it as soon as I woke in the morning.

Jude and Portia, two children brought together by circumstance and CPS. They did not share DNA but were raised as closely as brother and sister. They shared a bond, they were friends, they were always there for each other, always had their backs, they loved each other.... and then, they fell in love with each other.

The ups and downs of Jude and Portia trying to navigate their lives. They were the lucky ones. They had Ernie and Hensley who loved and raised them, and wanted them to be the best kids, students, adults they can be. They never gave up on them and always gave them what they needed, even if it wasn't what they wanted.

In the end, they want what we all want. Happiness. The paths they have to take is a long, rocky one, filled with a lot of love and beauty, but a lot of sadness, grief and self-destruction that has to be traversed first, before they can find the ultimate prize. Will they find their happiness or will they end up with an altered journey and find the answer to their prayers is "No!" ?

This is another well written book by Stephie Walls, that will leave you emotionally spent but a much better person for having experienced this latest work of love. I do not know how she manages to do it, but she captures the true essence of feelings and experiences, not just from from Jude and Portia, but from Ernie and Hensley as well.

This is an absolutely beautiful piece of Romantic Literary Art, and I recommend it highly! You won't be disappointed.

...You're my lemon pie...

I love the catchphrases in Stephie's books.  They are amazing!

I have admired Stephie's words since I read Label Me Proud. She knows how to write a story full of love, angst and odds that seem insurmountable.  She does it with poise and class and doesn't have to dumb it down to make people understand.

Yes there is a bit of taboo in the subject of the story, but it's slight and it actually brings more to the story of Jude and Portia.  They are foster siblings and grew up together, in a unconventional way. They were drawn together by personal tragedies. But that was also what seemed to have separated them too...

This story of Jude and Portia was original, fresh and it was a page turner.  Yes they were young, but their world experiences had aged them beyond their years.  And I truly believe that Jude was an old soul.

The two of them had depended on each other for such a long time that it was almost written in the stars that they should be together.

The words flowed from the page and I could really feel the emotions from both Jude and Portia.

I am in awe at how Stephie handled the subject of this book and made me admire her all the more.  This is definitely a must read book!  I am so glad I have been introduced to her work.  Well done Stephie! I cannot wait to see what you come out with next! Don't ever stop writing.

Family ties takes the notion of a taboo relationship and turns it into a heartbreaking but beautiful story of love, acceptance and understanding. We seem to see things in either black or white, but this book definitely shows areas of grey. I applaud the characters in this story and see it as the proverbial caterpillar to butterfly love story.

Even though I know that some people won't be able to differentiate the circumstances to accept the outcome in this story, I think this author has done an amazing job showing us all that it can be beautiful. Two foster children brought together over the loss of their mothers, seen as a family to the foster parents, but not to each other. There are extenuating circumstances in this story that has to be read to understand the path that has led to the end result of absolute love.

You will definitely fall in love the Jude, the ginger book loving outcast and Portia the sassy, spirited girl with all the answers. Their banter and relationship is one any family can hope for.

Although this is a somewhat taboo subject, it really is not taboo at all. It's how we view Family Ties as a society, but scientifically it has no standing in this storyline. This is another great story
for this author and one that will keep us pondering the question of family and what it means to each of us.
