Life is out to get me. Humvee accident that took my right hand? Strike one. Cancer three years later that stole my breasts and hair? Strike two. An overbearing mother who seems to think I’m twelve, not twenty-seven? Yeah, I’m out of there.
I thought moving to Oklahoma would give me a fresh start. I hoped life would finally cut me some damn slack. But between the inept people at the VA hospital and a boss who’s hell-bent on fixing me, I just want to be left alone. Haven’t I been through enough already?
Clay Prescott
Joining the Army and deploying to Afghanistan? Hard. Kicking an alcohol addiction and starting a business combining fitness and mental health? Harder. Worth it? Hell yes.
Battles, my gym, has been so successful that I hired a new employee—a veteran herself—to help me open a second location. And that’s when it all goes to hell. Everything I’ve ever stood for is called into question, and the one person I thought I could count on disappears. I’ve spent the last ten years helping everyone else. What happens when I can’t even save myself?
Hazel James owes her writing career to her 12th grade English teacher, who wrote, “You should consider a career in writing” on the top of her short story. As a kid who grew up bringing books to the dinner table, Hazel took that advice to heart and became a journalist in the Army.
Years later, Hazel read four books that gave her the courage to begin writing her own novels: Divergent by Veronica Roth, Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell, Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover, and Bright Side by Kim Holden.
Hazel is best known for her military romance novels, which weave in pieces of her husband’s Army career and journey with PTSD. Connecting with readers and promoting the importance of mental health awareness will always be the biggest highlight of her career.
Hazel lives in Tampa Bay, Florida with her husband and three children. When she’s not writing, she can be found knee-deep in a DIY project (usually accompanied by 90s music and a Diet Coke).
"Clay's staring at me like I'm the only one who can quench his thirst. I'd gladly be his water. The glass. Hell, I'd even be the ice cubes if he'd give me a few hours and a freezer."
Saved is a standalone contemporary romance. Release date: June 21 Blogger sign up: http://bit.ly/SavedRELEASE
Here’s the thing about this book: the storytelling is so effortless and easy to engage with that you just sail along feeling all the feels – mostly good, but not without a few suckerpunches along the way – and then suddenly turn the last page, feeling a little sniffily and with your heart kind of overflowing with happiness, but also a little bit like, “wait what? I wasn’t ready for that to end yet! I am not ready to say goodbye! And also, I will probably need more Clay in my life, for the rest of my life because…Christ Jesus and all the heart eyeballs.”
Or maybe that’s just me?
Nah. Y’all read it. You’ll see!
Seriously, though. It took literally no time for this book to capture my heart. Between Leilani’s kind but fierce spirit, and Clay’s easy charm, I felt myself sucked into this book from the very first page. These two, you guys. GAH! These two are the very best kind of couple to read about: sparky and fun, sweet and emotional, and packing just enough heat to set my heart to racing. I loved them so hard which makes it no surprise that I adored the crap out of this story, right?
God, I so did.
I mean, what’s not to love? The writing was smart and engaging, and the characters felt so real (flawed, but lovable). Despite the fact that there were a few very serious issues touched upon in this story, the story itself had a lightness to it. The love story, for the most part, was playful and full of that sort of flirty banter against which I am completely powerless. That said, I felt like the more serious issues were handled respectfully, if not in great detail. It’s topical without losing sight of the fact that, at it’s very heart, it’s a romance.
Bottom line: if you’re looking for a completely captivating story - sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes swoony, but always completely enjoyable – you will not go wrong with Saved! ~ Shelly, 4.5 Stars
Loved this book. It took me so long to read just due to distractions and no audiobook, but I read it on a plane and was glad to finish. I love when stories, characters and plots are outside the box. There was a part that aggravated me, but I still liked this story. There’s just something about when the hero or heroine is disfigured in some way making them not “perfect.” Sigh…
This is only my second book by Hazel James but so far what stands out about her work is that it’s real. It’s about real life, and about hard things that really don’t get talked about. Her stories are something very relatable and this one is no exception.
If you’ve read Chased (not really necessary to this story), then you’ve met Clay. He owns the gym, Battles, but not only is it a gym, it’s also therapy. I think it’s a unique concept. Clay is a great guy, he sees past the outside and looks at the things that have more meaning. He’s also way too trusting. Leilani (I love her name!) is awesome! She is strong, stubborn, and sassy. She has overcome losing her arm in an accident to losing her hair and breasts to cancer. She doesn’t let that get her down except for a few certain moments. Clay and Leilani are in like/lust with each other but they don’t seem to have the courage to do anything about it, until they do. Once they get together, they seem perfect, flawless, and easy. But of course, they aren’t.
There were two really neat concepts in this book that I loved. The 30 random acts of kindness (or Clayness) using one word and the starfish. You can’t save everyone but you can make a difference to someone. ❤️
Where do I start? This was such an intense read that I am having difficulty finding the words to write this review.
Saved is heartbreakingly poignant and soul shattering. My emotions are fractured after reading this story. Hazel James has delivered a brilliant, emotional story of hope and loss, of pain and courage.
This book is confronting on numerous levels but so well written that it had me totally engrossed from the start. I freely admit that I was in tears several times whilst reading Saved.
Saved really is a story of strength, courage and determination to overcome the obstacles that life throws at you.
Extremely well written this story will grip you and take you on an emotional roller coaster ride which will stay with you long after you have finished it.
There’s always that “one” book that hits you right in the feels. For me, it happened twice. By this amazing author. When you can feel the words that you’re reading it’s the most incredible thing. Clay and Leilani’s story did that for me. Their story isn’t all fun, games and love. There’s also heartbreak, strength, courage and faith. I enjoyed their journey
I don't always do so well with life, but holy hell! Poor Leilani, I'm not sure how she's still standing much less moving forward that's for sure. She moves to my god forsaken state of Oklahoma (yeah I hate it here LOL) for a fresh start but there are still some hiccups for her & now she just wants to be left the hell alone (I can relate). Clay is our hero who I fell hard for from the jump, and I'm so glad Leilani (who I loved as well) came face to face with him because they were perfect together but since they took their sweet time about it, well, I found myself cheering them on out loud. Now, while Hazel James definitely writes stories light on the angst, there was a bump or two in the road after she started working for him. To find out what it was, and to see how their journey played out, you'll have to hit those one click buttons as I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
There is something about the way this author writes her characters. You instantly find a connection with them. Hazel James excels at writing the conversations between characters. They are realistic and witty. It pulls you into their lives and in turn they find there way into your heart.
This is my second read from Hazel James, set in the same town as Chased, we join Clay- if you have read Chased you may remember Clay as DH's conscious and the owner of Battles- a gym where you get the therapy session included. Clay is also a military vet-he created Battles due to some of his own demons, demons he thought he had slayed. Leilani- Former military vet who seems to have the cards stacked against her, not only did she lose part of her right arm in a Humvee accident, she was diagnosed with breast cancer-causing her to lose her hair and her breasts, add to that a helicopter mom who won't let her breathe and you have Leilani at the end of her rope, needing a fresh start she jumps at the chance when she sees a program for vets out of Oklahoma, finally she is able to breathe- with a place to stay provided and a job- she thinks things might be falling into place-until she meets Clay- the handsome boss she didn't count on. A little gun shy due to how her last relationship ended, she and Clay fight their attraction, until they can't fight it anymore, only there is something or someone lurking in the shadows to bring it all crashing down. Faced with betrayal, lies, and someone out to get them both, can Clay and Leilani find the strength to remember what is truly important or will this be the final straw that not only destroys Battles but the relationship that neither Clay and Leilani knew they so desperately needed. Filled with heartbreak, laughs, family you choose and the strength to not let something break you, if you need a book with a well written story and well written characters, this is the book for you! - By Carli
A 3 star review by Haven Leilani has not had an easy life. In fact, all she seems to have is bad luck and strife. While others may say this, knowingly exaggerating, Leilani is only speaking the truth. Losing her hand in a Humvee accident? Okay, she can adapt. She's alive after all, and that's what matters. But a second hit, breast cancer at that, which resulted in losing her breasts and hair? Again, adjustments can be made because she's survived once more. Add both potentially tragic incidents and an overbearing mother who treats you as a child? Leilani has had enough, too much actually, and she's done. Ready to start elsewhere, and Oklahoma seems like a good place to make it. And now she's dealing with those who are supposed to help but appear as if they're unable to, and a boss that wants to fix her, and she's quickly reaching the end of what little patience she had left.
Clay enlisted and was deployed to Afghanistan, and lived to return home. It was hard, but he conquered it. Then he had to face the truth of his addiction to alcohol. That was definitely much harder. But he did it. He's sober and starting a business to combine mental health and fitness. Again, difficult, but just like winning his battle with addiction, the end results will be so worth it.
With Clay's business being such a success, he knows he needs more help. That happens to be a veteran herself, to open a second location. Things are moving along nicely, until they aren't. And now once more, Clay is dealing with a difficult task. Everything he's believed in, stood for, is being questioned, and the one he felt always had his back vanishes.
Clay has always fought for others, always willing to help whenever possible, yet when he needs the same in return, he's left alone, wondering who he can depend on for support.
As Clay and Leilani begin a friendship, both hesitant to risk hurt again, regardless of which way that is, they also know there's a connection between them that can't be denied. While they continue to spend time together, that bond steadily grows, and they must choose whether the possibility of forever is worth the risk of heartache.
What happens when two people, both dealt hard blows throughout their lives, meet and find something neither expected to? Can Leilani help Clay deal with what's coming his way? Can their new love withstand all obstacles? Is a future together theirs for the taking?
One-click now and follow along as Clay and Leilani strive toward achieving their dreams, both personally and professionally, and discover a love that knows no bounds. I like that they start with friendship and get to truly know one another before moving forward. Plus, it shows that their feelings are real, not anything due to circumstances or proximity, but a result of their hearts yearning for one another. I also like how they grow individually and as a couple, helping each other heal in more ways than one.
4 1/2 stars. Hazel James is quickly becoming a favorite. I LOVED Clay and Leilani. They were both so open and honest. My only issue was how fast Clay went down. What happened to him was awful but for such a wonderfully positive person, he sank back into bad habits in what felt like seconds. I just think he would have struggled more before taking a drink. Otherwise this was a fantastic book.
Saved is an emotionally gripping story that was incredible written. This is one story that you could tell how much emotion that the author put into the story. There was so much emotion in the story that really stayed with me well after I finished reading it. A lot of the time I was not sure what was going to happen throughout the story and was completely surprised at some of the things that happened in the book.
The heroine of the story Leilani had experienced a lot of hardship in the last few years but that didn’t stop her feisty attitude. I absolutely loved reading about this character because of the strength that she showed throughout the story just made me really connect with her. I love the way that she helped people and the way that she never gave up despite all the obstacles that she experienced.
Clay I absolutely fell in love with during this story. I loved the way that he was able to put a positive spin on thing and help others out when they were at their lowest. I really loved the selfless things he did for others and the way that he helped the less fortunate. Clay was an incredible male character for this story that I absolutely adored reading about.
Saved is about Leilani who lost her arm and then three years later was diagnosed with breast cancer. After all of this her mother has become a little overbearing with her constant worry and over the top ways. So, Leilani makes a decision to move and she meets the owner of Battles Clay who she has an immediate connection with.
Hazel James really has. Away with her stories and creating storylines that really open my eyes to the experiences that people have. The stories that this author has written stay with me well after I have finished reading the story. Saved was another great story by this amazing author. This is a definitive must read for everyone
This is my second book by Hazel James, and boy does she deliver!
We met Clay in Chased. He owns Battles, the gym where he works his butt off to make his clients stronger, not only physically, but mentally as well. Clay has had a rough go at life. It's only about to get rougher when the unstoppable, smart-mouthed Leilani signs up for the program his best friend runs. Leilani has had her own struggles in life. An accident while serving her country cost her part of her arm. Cancer cost her her breasts. But none of that could take away her drive and passion for life. She moves to Oklahoma to get a much needed fresh start.
The attraction between Clay and Leilani is undeniable, but life is never easy for them. They'll have to fight if they want to stay together.
Hazel has an incredible way of bringing her characters to life on your screen. I laughed, cried, and swooned while reading Saved. The story sucked me in and didn't let me go until I devoured the last word. Hazel's knack for putting you in the middle of the Clay and Leilani's world is unmatched. This book is filled with lovable characters, and also some you hate, imaginative story-telling, and, of course, romance.
Clay and Leilani both have a desire to help others, but they may just be the only two people in the world that can save each other.
Saved by Hazel James was my 2nd book by this author. I loved Chased and was very excited to revisit the characters in Saved. We are introduced to the kind hearted Clay in Chased, but really get to know him in Saved. Clay turned his life around, and now helps others through his gym Battles. At Battles, he helps his clients regain their life both physically and mentally. Leilani is a former military woman, and a cancer survivor. She applies to Battles for one of their work programs to start her life over. After a failed relationship, low self-esteem and trying to get away from her overprotective mom, Battles seems like the fresh start she needs. Clay likes Leilani from the start. A friendship between the two develops, and turns into much more. They have a spark, and Clay finds any reason he can to be around Leilani. They have their ups and downs like any couple, but this only makes them stronger. Clay and Leilani not only help others, abut together they help each other and heal each other. Hazel James’s storytelling and characters get you hooked, and keep you wanting more. Saved has lots of feels in it, and you will want to take the ride with Clay and Leilani on their journey to find happiness.

It says something about a book when you can read it cover to cover in one day. I started this one with my coffee this morning and finished it right before dinner. I am still at a loss of how to feel, I was blown away by all the emotion this book stirred up.
Leilani is one of those girls that life has done its damndest to break her down. She has been hit by curve ball after curve ball and has managed to get back up again. The strength she has is astounding.
Clay - who we met for a brief couple of moments during Chased - is a gym owner and a badass counselor and motivator. He’s exactly what Lei needs, but the struggles that come their way took even me, an avid romance reader, by complete surprise.
This book is about taking the power back over your fears, insecurities and depression. It’s about allowing yourself to be vulnerable again after you’ve been hurt one too many times. It’s a reminder that no matter how deep rock bottom is, there is always a way back up. Fear should not stop you from reaching for your dreams. I am so stunned by the amazing words of motivation and encouragement these characters offered between the pages. So many lessons to be learned. And, as Lei’s father always says “fear makes a terrible compass”.
Gah! Yet another book hit out of the park by the fabulous Hazel James. Saved included Hazel's signature humor, sass, and steam, as well as characters you can't help but love. Leilani is a badass heroine with spunk, grit, and a penchant for sweets...needless to say, she's a girl after my own heart. Clay is a swoon-worthy dude who at times, could've used a swift kick in the pants, but truly has a hero's heart.
"We can't choose our battles. Sometimes life chooses them for us. All we can do is turn and face them head-on."
As the book evolved, there were certainly battles to face. The past, the present, even the future. Who would we be without people in our corner? What people do we need to surround ourselves with to leave the mark that we hope to leave on others? Claylani are those people. If fiction became reality, I would love to have both of them in my corner, and I'd be the first to root them on.
If you loved Chased, you'll enjoy seeing little snippets of our friends DH and Paige, too.
So now, I'm asking each of you to go out and seek out a starfish that could use your help.
Admittedly, this is my first book by Hazel James and it's safe to say it wont be my last. Hazel delivers a genuine romance with some not so subtle undertones of self reflection, strength, and courage without the "in your face" call to action. Her technical knowledge of the military can only be achieved through personal experience and made me appreciate the story that much more. In Leilani we find a true h who experiences severe loss not once but twice while trying to rebuild her life. Although, her losses are great, her grit and determination to lead a normal life are more than admirable. <-- #GirlCrush. In Clay we find a H who has over come his past demons and stands strong as an honorable and dedicated man, who finds his true happiness through selfless acts. Definately one of my favorite reads of 2018.
Saved is a book about 2 people learning to love together through tough situations. This book gives a emotional story, where in the mist of loss and pain- true love and happiness can be found.
Leilani gets an opportunity to have a new start and being an amputee and fighting cancer. Clay has overcome issues in his past and works to help people empower themselves everyday.
With Clay and Leilani's troubled pasts with medical and emotional issues but through the strength of these characters and the people around them- even when issues arise, they find a way to be together.
Hazel James takes the readers through so many real emotional issues so many people deal with everyday, and when it shows when people have good support systems- anything is possible.
This book dealt with a lot of really tough issues in an excellent way that made everything feel absolutely relatable. These characters felt like my friends and I wanted to lift them up, support them, and be present for them.
This book also had a sad twist that made me want to cry. After everything that Clay had gone through and built from the floor up, only to be totally screwed like he was ... sigh.
And for Leilani to come back the way she did. She has been one of my favorite heroines because sh's fierce. She's determined. She never wants to give up.
I could probably read about Leilani and Clay forever. I absolutely adored them.
I finished this book a few days ago but I’m struggling to put words on paper that will do the story and the author justice, when a book leaves you feeling not just reading the words you know that this is going to be an incredible read. Leilani and Clay’s story isn’t all sweetness and light they have to find their inner strength to get through heartbreak and loss. This book is not just a beautifully written love story Hazel James takes us on the journey that her characters have to take to realise they can save each other. You may love be the characters you may hate some of the characters but this book will leave you feeling every emotion known to man. Brilliant read thank you Hazel James.
Saved was such a touching love story. It's the kind that haunts a reader days after it's finished and makes a person feel that they want to be loved like that. I'm a sucker for flawed characters, especially those with emotional baggage. A story is so much more gritty, real, and captivating when the reader gets to discover the ugly side that could be easily glossed over. This story affords a real-feel glimpse into the lives of our heroes, a perspective that needs to be on the minds of us all. Another job well done. I can't wait to see what this author does next.
I'm pretty sure you've never read a story like that. Not that I know your bookshelve but this story is so unique, that I would bet you never met a character like Leilani. You might say "Sure, everyone is telling this to sell a book", but trust me, it's worth the buy. And I don't sell the book - I just love it. And the story. And Clay - because c'mon, you know you're into good lovestories.
Saved by Hazel James is a brilliant story about adversities in life, starting over, and never giving up. I loved the plot, the characters, and the love. From page one, I couldn’t get enough, swiped through to the end, and finished feeling so content and happy. Kindness goes such a long way, what we can do for others, and I think the world would be such a better place if more people were to #belikeclay.
Oh Hazel. This book was beautiful. I didn’t realize it was integrated with Chased. I was super excited to see Clay and hear his story. I loved this. Clay and Leilani rebuilding their lives and fitting together seamlessly. The insight into the struggles after military service is eye opening. Thank you for putting this out there for us.
I feel like I've been through the wringer with this book. I'm exhausted...but in a good way. The book talks about picking your battles, and the duo in this book has a lot of them. To be honest, I wouldn't have the grace that they shared, but they weren't always perfect. They were perfect for each other, however, and great role models for others. They were each other's "saving" grace.
Hazel James is such a brilliant storyteller, I hung onto her every word and I felt every emotion, it just seeped through the pages and into my soul. Unforgettable!
An emotionally beautiful story with amazing characters, it's definitely one you'll want to read over and over again.
First time I read something from this author, and I gotta say it was a pretty darn good book. The writing was strong, the main characters were fabulous and unique. The storyline was great a bit over the place with many different little things going on, but not anything too distracting.
I enjoyed this book. The story is great but it's the writing that stuck with me. I have so many favorite quotes from this book.
“It’s easier to see the bright side when you let go of the dark.”
"Because of it."
"It doesn’t take a lot of time or money to give someone hope.”
“My mom always said when you see something beautiful, you should take a moment to admire it."
See! So many! The author is one wise woman.
Clay is so smooth! I want to lick him like buttercream frosting. He's a perfect book boyfriend.
Leilani is one strong woman. I can't even imagine everything she went through. She's feisty and fierce with an open heart.
I loved reading about a place I know. Moore, OK is a small town that has been hit hard. I liked the way the author wrote about it. Not too much description but enough to get a visual.
Their story was fun to read. Different emotions were brought forth through out. I smiled, felt sad and then felt hope.
This was my first book by this author and if she keeps writing like this it won't be my last.
She’s not the first woman I’ve kissed, but she’s the first one I want to be my last...
Leilani and Clay’s is one of struggles, determination, and finding one’s self worth. Clay is a vet who has overcome PTSD and alcoholism to find himself being able to help others. Clay has a unique program that helps struggling vets to find their way in life again. Leilani is a vet who has lost an arm due to an injury while in the service and then lost her breasts from cancer. To say that she is a survivor is putting it mildly, she’s a fighter! After recovering from Cancer her mom has become overbearingly protective of Leilani. Leilani needs an escape, hence she moves to Clay’s apartments for his group. Leilani and Clay quickly become more than just boss and employee. They challenge each other, support each other and at times annoy the crap out of one another. Even with all that they know that at the end of the day they truly and deeply love each other. But when loyalties and trust are tested will their love be enough to save them both?
