Joey… I wouldn’t say I ran away exactly—twenty-two is too old for that. I’d call it self-preservation.
I have one objective: protect my heart from the boy next door who has no clue I’ve loved him my whole life, even with a front row seat to his revolving bedroom door.
My escape plan almost worked. Except I left one thing behind.
Logan Carter hijacked my heart, and now it’s time to get it back. This time for good.
Logan…I wouldn’t say I’ve been lying this whole time—not about everything. Not about how much I miss my best friend, and definitely not about how pissed I am that she left with hardly a goodbye.
She’s the last person I ever expected to ghost me, and her absence left a gaping hole in my chest.
When Joey Grayson steps off that bus, I know I’ll do anything to keep her home, and that means finding out the truth. But I’m not sure how to tell her my truths when I’m living so many lies.
Lex Martin is the USA Today bestselling author of Varsity Dads, Texas Nights, and the Dearest series. She writes contemporary romance novels, the steamy kind she hopes her readers love but her parents avoid. A former high school English teacher and freelance journalist, she resides in Texas with her husband and twin daughters. Drop her a line. She loves hearing from readers.
Breathless was my first book by Lex Martin, and I liked it a lot. It was a great friends to lovers story with just enough steam and angst that kept me hooked.
Joey's been in love with her best friend Logan for as long as she can remember. At twenty two, she heard a one sided conversation that had her running away from him, but months later, she's back for his brother's wedding. Logan has no idea why Joey left, but it hurt him. She's his best friend and to disappear so completely from his life cut him deep. He's determined to figure out why it is she ran away, and even more determined to make her stay.
Logan was the absolute best hero. I adored him. He was a great friend and tried to do the right thing, even if he was a bit misguided at times. I liked Joey most of the time, but all the miscommunication with her drove me crazy. I wish she would have been more open and upfront. There was a moment toward the middle end that made me ragey... I thought it was going to go in a completely different direction than it did and I'm so thankful that didn't happen. I was so happy with the way things turned out. Even though there was a bit of an ott moment at the end, I loved the way it ended overall. Joey and Logan were amazing together and it's like it was meant to be.
I listened to the audio version of this book and as always, Joe Arden did an amazing job narrating. Rose Dioro narrated Joey's book and she did a great job as well. After reading Breathless I want to go back and read the first few books in this series. Even though this was a complete stand alone, I'd like to know more about some of the side characters. If you're looking for a friends to lovers romance to sweep you off your feet, I recommend checking this one out!
When Logan and Joey are just meant to be, there is no way the world separates them for far too long because the chemistry is off the hook...
I sighed, I cried, I... oh look! THAT RHYMED! But seriously y'all, this book had me in so much angsty emotions. I was anticipating so many things, but ended up getting so much more. Because Lex Martin, that's how she does it. That's how she hooks you in with her writing and magical words that keep you flowing with those tingly feelings in your stomach, and you heart skips so many beats when reading the true romance of her characters, true romance filled with that powerful chemistry that you just love reading about.
If you have not read the previous books in this series, YOU. ARE. MISSING. OUT!
ARC kindly provided by the publicist, in exchange for an honest review...
I am hopelessly in love with this book. I can't stop thinking about it. I can't stop swooning over it. I am obsessed. I have this urge to push it into everyone's hands and tell them they NEED TO READ IT RIGHT NOW! You guys, it was BEYOND amazing. So swoony, so feel good, so sexy, so fun and flirty and tender and endearing, and I am just IN LOVEEEEEE with Logan and Joey. They charmed me until I was a melty puddle of feel-goodness. Seriously, I felt so wooed by this story. I know it's going to be on my FAVES of 2020 list. It just hit me in the heart.
Breathless is a friends-to-lovers with some unrequited love, and it made me feel EVERYTHING. And I am talking EVERY-FREAKING-THING!
Right from the start, when Joey shows up in town for a wedding and Logan is there to pick her up, my heart was in my throat. Joey and Logan have such a natural effortless to their relationship, an ease that lets you fall right into them. As a reader, I LOVED how right their friendship felt. I was instantly able to connect to the closeness and intimacy of the connection they shared. I could tell these two characters BELONGED together. I could feel it in my gut. And it was DELIGHTFUL. Logan doesn't know Joey is in love with him and that brought those unrequited feels of longing and need that crawled under my skin and had me feeling it big time. It was sooooooooo good.
SO SO SOOOOOOOO GOOD.
I can't even tell you. I ate this romance up. I couldn't put it down. I didn't want it to end. Lex brought MAJOR romance to this sweet story of two best friends falling in love while overcoming insecurity, vulnerability, and proving they can be each others be-all and end-all. It was dreamy, it was romantic, it was magical, and memorable! And I can't say enough good things. I am a FIVE STAR fan of this one, you guys!! I can't wait for you to read it. It's a perfect standalone.
”I didn’t even know you were the part of me that was missing.”
Lex Martin absolutely KILLED the “girl next door”/“childhood best friends” trope with Breathless. Joey & Logan have been best friends since he saved her from a well as children, and that’s about the time she started crushing on him as well. If you’ve read the rest of the Texas Nights series then you may know a bit about Joey and Logan. If not here’s a small bit, Logan is known to have a bit of a wild manwhore persona, and Joey is known as the good girl. When Joey leaves town to get away from the pain of seeing the man she loves, loving on everyone else, Logan realizes how much she TRULY meant to him. I enjoyed this story, because not only was it sweet and steamy, there was also that perfect level of angst that Ms. Martin is so good at achieving. There is a bit of mystery surrounding Logan and why he’s always running off for long stretches of time late at night. Joey has some angsty drama in her life she needs to deal with an figure out, and these two figuring out things together and struggling to figure out taking their friendship to a different level, makes for an AMAZING read. My only complaint is that it’s over. Can I stay in this town with these people forever? Reasonable request, right?
Tender as the ranch breeze and sizzling hot as the Texan sun, Lex makes us believe in the power of Eternal bonds of Love that bring back the wanderers home. The return of the Prodigal Bridesmaid...Josephine Greyson is returning home to Austin, having run away to Florida Six months ago with nothing but meager belongings and a less than meager heart. But the pulse stayed behind, "Logan Carter. The boy next door and my lifelong crush." is there to pick her up...much to her surprise
"We’re each other’s one call from jail, for fuck’s sake. My Netflix binge buddy when I genuinely want to watch a movie and relax. The one woman who makes me want to try to be a better person." A languid tale of belonging, longing and healing. The mood follows earlier two books- Shameless & Ruthless. There's unrequited love knocking on the hearts, there's reticence because secrets pull them back like tethered to hooks. Family gets together with love and laughter and in the center of it all are pre-designed LoJo. Tori and Ethan from Ruthless are getting married and Joey is the bestie bridesmaid. When faced with Logan, all the memories rush back with the force of the tsunami. Passions re-ignite and much to her consternation, her heart and body decide to betray her.
"My head knows I’m an idiot for being in love with Logan, for wanting someone who’s never wanted me, but my body has never gotten the memo. " There's too many people wishing them their HEA, but some of them are hell bent on being interfering villains and will not hesitate to resort to violence to push them far apart Hot scorching sexy scenes are Lex's speciality and paired with heart touching poignant love her comfort zone. Writing is very fluid, pace a bit slow in the first half, but later it picks speed. Unexpected twists slap you in the face and you think all is lost... What happens next- you have to read to find out.. 4.5 stars for Density and Center of Gravity #BookBistroBlogApproved Follow me on: BookBistroBlog@gmail.com https://Twitter.com/BookBistro www.instagram.com/BookBistroBlog https://bookbistroblogger.blogspot.com/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/BookB...
Texas Nights is becoming one of my favorite series! Each book can be read as a standalone. Lex Martin is definitely one of my favorite authors. She always creates an amazing story that has me hooked from the start and doesn’t let me go until the last word of the last chapter. Every story has love, emotions and wonderful characters, and Breathless wasn’t any different. I absolutely loved it!
Joey and Logan are such loveable characters. Joey is strong, fierce, funny, loving, independent and loyal. Her past hasn’t always been easy and she’s struggling a little bit now, but she’s determined to make it work and doesn’t need any help. Joey may be a little vulnerable in some way, but I found her mostly to be a strong woman. Logan is hardworking, loyal, strong and caring. He does what he thinks is the right thing to do, even if it isn’t easy. He may not always show it, but the man has a big heart.
I just adored Joey and Logan’s friendship and later on relationship. They have been best friends since they were little kids. They spent so much time together and had fun together. Joey had a crush on Logan, but she didn’t think he would ever feel the same way. Joey and Logan’s friendship slowly develops into something more. It was beautiful to read how those feelings become stronger, more intense, and how they fell in love. Joey and Logan are characters I was rooting for to be together and to be happy together. They both deserve the happily ever after they have gotten.
It was great to see the couples of the previous books and to see them still very much in love. I love their bond with Logan and Joey. The friendship between them is great and solid. There is definitely one secondary character I want to get his own story, even after he didn’t appear much in Breathless. I’m crossing my fingers that he’ll get it.
-- My honest review is based on an advanced reader copy of this book. --
I gobbled this book up! I couldn’t get enough. Their delicious chemistry sucked me in immediately and I was a complete goner. I forget, sometimes, how completely decadent a well-written friends-to-lovers book can feel, but Breathless served as a solid reminder and satisfied on every level.
There is so much to love here. It’s a little angsty – but in the best way. The sort of feeling when your heart aches for two people to be together and you can hardly stand to wait while they figure it out themselves? And then they do – and your heart begins a crazy dance – knocking around wildly in your chest leaving you, well…breathless. All that. Plus: heat. Lord almighty, the heat between these two. Sizzling hot and devilishly dirty and, most importantly for me, perfectly balanced with their emotional connection. This story is the whole package, y’all. So swoony!
A little bit heavy, a little bit light, the story felt well-rounded and perfectly paced. I laughed out loud in a couple of places, and other times my eyes welled with tears. My heart raced in suspenseful anticipation, and oh, how it ached for these to fantastic characters sometimes. This was just what my sappy little romance-loving heart was craving and I could not have been happier with it! ~ Shelly, 5 Stars

It doesn’t get much better than this smart, sexy, steamy friends-to-lovers romance! From the first words, I was immediately sucked into Breathless and Joey and Logan’s romance.
One that almost never got off the ground. #Denial
I loved the friendship between Joey and Logan, that at the heart of their relationship they were friends first, and fierce protectors of that friendship. Until the truth comes out—at last!
These two definitely stumbled and the miscommunications and misunderstandings and the past hurts nearly derailed this deep-seated love from the start. Especially because there were still some secrets that needed to be shared. **side eye to Logan**
I absolutely fell in love with Joey and Logan and couldn’t help but root for them to get their act together, to admit their feelings, to allow love in—and to trust that love is enough to see them through tough times.
Swoon. I can’t wait to re-read Breathless and the rest of this fantastic Texas Nights series. ~ Missy, 5 stars
Ohhhhhh this book. It's so good! It's sweet yet super sexy. There are some serious swoon-worthy moments. I freaking adored it! So much, I just wrote Lex a loooong email going on and on about it! ☺️
I have enjoyed every book in this series and couldn't wait to finally get Logan and Joey's story. It was even better than I had anticipated. If you are a fan of the friends to lovers trope , then you should try this gorgeous book.
Joey (22) has adored Logan (26) since she was 8 years old and he rescued her from a well that she fell down. Logan used to be best friend's with Joey's big brother Silas and so Joey was always off limits romantically but she was his best friend until she suddenly left six months prior to the start of the book. Logan doesn't understand why she went and he is miserable the whole time she is gone.
When she has to return for a wedding, he is determined to find out why Joey left so unexpectedly and soon he realises how much he wants his girl to stay. But, Logan is keeping some deep secrets and when they are revealed people are going to be hurt.
Fans of small town romances, friends to lovers and all round fabulous writing should grab this book with both hands. The characters are well written and out of all the Heroes in this series, Logan is my favourite. His loyalty, humour , mischievous nature and the way he puts his family above all else makes for a gorgeous character. Plus he's H.O.T.
Watching him realise he was in love with Joey was adorable. She was no longer the kid with pigtails, she was all grown up....
Damn. The girl next door has got it going on.
There is drama, humour , a couple of unexpected twists and the plot held my interest. I was invested from start to finish and really didn't want the story to end.
HEA? Yes - gorgeous Cheating? No
I read and listened via audible. The story was narrated by Rose Dioro and Joe Arden who did a fantastic performance.
Re read 2023 - I love this story more each time I re read it.
5 BREATHLESS STARS!! FREAKING AMAZING!! Lex Martin has touch my heart with Joey and Logan. These two going from best friends to lovers was perfection. Their story has it all, with every emotion button being pushed and even some suspense. I absolutely love this series and i know you will too. Make sure to download this book, it is a must read.
I liked it, but I needed a little more. I loved Tori and Ethan’s book, but this one was ok. I was expecting more from Joey and Logan’s story. Maybe what’s bothering me is that Joey questions Logan’s feelings a lot. She can’t believe he loves her, and maybe at first I can understand why she feels that way, but it got old fast. Also I didn’t feel a strong chemistry between them.
Overall I was very excited about this book but it fell a little short for me.
"Quiero hacerte feliz. En esta vida y en la siguiente. "
This story was so wonderful and sweet. I loved Joey and Logan very much... Those two were meant to be, even though it took a while for them, or maybe just Logan, to figure it out... But i really enjoyed their story , even though it was full of bumps and hidden truths...
"I though I had lost you, but you're back. And I feel like I'm getting a second chance to do what I should've done a long time ago."
Well, Joey run away six months ago from the only place that she knew as home and the reason for that was the boy next door... Her best friend... A man that unknowingly was holding her heart on his palms... But Joey couldn't see him anymore to wasting his time to another girls... Girls that weren't she!!! Her heart was broken, so she put some distance between them... But now, she has to go back in order to make an appearance to Logan's brother's wedding, and maybe... Just maybe... she has to make her move toward the boy that she will always desire!!!
"Logan Carter. If my heart had a sound beyond the thump in my chest, it would be his name."
Logan is pissed off that his best friend had ghosted him for over six months and without a reason... At least a reason that he knows... And now, she is coming back into town and even though, he is still mad at her, he wants his best friend back... Maybe for other reasons too... After so many time away, he is starting to seeing her in a different light, but could he risk it all for them to happen??? How he will manage to tell her the truth about the lie that he is living??? How she will react if he will be honest to her??? Will she understand or will he lose her for good???
"I want to become that man, the man she needs. I want to deserve her, and right now I don't."
Well, i loved Logan and Joey very much... They were so perfect together, even though they had wasted so much time before... Joey was so sweet and caring... But she was so insecure in everything that had to do with Logan... She needed to be a little more agressive, i think!!! As for Logan.... I loved that guy... Yep, he was effortless sexy and i could understand the appeal to Joey... The man was busting himself in order for everyone to be happy and he had so heavy load upon his shoulders... So many lies were pilling up and were suffocating him and when he decided to take something for himself, all these lies almost destroyed him...
"I don't know when this went from giving the relationship thing a shot to being all in, but I'm fully invested now. And it's scary as hell. Because if i don't work out my shit, I might lose the best thing that's ever happened to me."
Well, I enjoyed very much and this ride in the "Texas Nights" series... I love small town romances, friends to become something more stories... And this one was a very good story....
"You rock my fucking world..."
*I received an advanced copy of this book in the exchange of an honest review.
Breathless is the third book in the Texas Nights series. I got all the feels while reading Joey and Logan’s story. It hooked me right from the start and I couldn’t put it down for one second. So good!
Joey is a sweet girl and she’s been in love with her best friend since childhood. But Logan has always kept her in the friend-zone. It hurts Joey to constantly watch Logan’s player ways. She’s had enough and decides to move and get away from Logan after having her heart broken for the last time. She hopes the distance will help her get over him. She heads back to Texas for a wedding, but knows she can’t fall down the same path as when she left, but sometimes your heart can’t help what it feels, and Joey’s heart wants Logan.
Logan has always been known for his playboy and jokester ways. He doesn’t take things too seriously. His life turned upside down years ago and he used women and alcohol to get him through. And through everything there’s been one girl who was there for Logan, Joey. She’s his best friend and sees him for the real person he is. And he doesn’t know why she left or why she isn’t returning his phone calls. But he’s determined to get answers while Joey’s back in town. She’s part of his heart and he can’t lose her again.
Ever since Logan saved Joey from a well they’ve been best friends. I loved their friendship and their banter. The swoon with these two was at a high level. They have intense chemistry and you feel it jumping out from the pages. And when Logan realizes how much Joey truly means to him had me saying “finally” and smiling so big. I loved these two and their journey from friends to lovers. They just put me in such a good mood and made me happy.
Breathless was a fantastic friend to lovers romance. It was sweet and steamy, but also angsty. It was filled with so many swoony moments. I loved and adored this story so much and didn’t want this book to end. I was left smiling from ear to ear and my heart full of warmth. I wish I could stay in this small town with these people because I really don’t want to say goodbye to them—they’ll definitely be missed.
*I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book*
I adore Lex Martin. Her writing style just hits every single one of my buttons. So every time she has a new release I can't read anything for the days leading up to the book being in my grabby little hands because I am so fixated on reading her words.
However my biggest issue is my goldfish brain. So every book is like a standalone for me. I vaguely remember the story and characters from each book but I forget the secondary characters. So I couldn't remember who Logan and Joey were. But this isn't an issue because as soon as I started reading I was caught up in all things them and their lives.
Joey was so perfect. Words can't even begin to describe her character. I always worry about these kinds of friends to lovers books where the h has been in love and pining for the H and he has been sleeping with everything with a pulse. But with Lex writing it, it doesn't matter. The heroine isn't going to be a doormat and the hero is going to pull out all the stops and that's exactly what I love about it.
Joey had loved Logan forever but she had self respect and a backbone. She knew she deserved more than she thought he was capable of giving her and she packed up and left. And she didn't come home for him or even plan on staying there even once their relationship started.
But of course Logan knew what he was missing when Joey left so he had no intentions of letting her leave again. Now as the blurb said Logan is drowning in secrets and honestly I guessed what it was immediately and I spent most of the book waiting to see how they would come out and tear his life apart. And although I get why he felt he needed to keep it all secret I wanted to slap him for being so stupid.
Naturally once I picked this book up I couldn't put it down. I loved every second of the story and I think I need to plan a complete series re-read. There is a link for a novella at the end of this which I have downloaded and ready to go as my incentive to write this review so I'm off.
Another Lex Martin smash hit! I absolutely fell in love with this author after reading Shameless a few years ago, and she blew me away again with Breathless. She just has a way about sucking you into the world she has created and not letting you go. I love her writing style -- it's fresh and fun and comfy cozy. It feels like sitting down with your best friend and a bottle of wine on a Friday night, just gabbing and telling stories. The best!
Breathless was such a fun friends-to-lovers. I loved the little angsty moments that were tossed in, and the fun Texas charm of the story, and the raw emotions of each character. I found myself smiling on one page and then clutching my heart on the next -- and that's the sign of a good book!
I highly recommend Breathless and this author in general. Five stars!
Not my cup of tea. You have a pining h who has loved the H for years and have watch and heard about his many exploits with other women. H is your typical playboy. h left to escape and try to get over the H, of course without success. She returns for a wedding. They reconnect and eventual get together.
OW drama in that past hookups around and also a woman, Samantha, that wants the H but he never wanted nor had her.
No cheating between the H/h.
Logan’s been keeping a pretty serious secret that involves Samantha and. Child. But you can smell that conflict a mile away.
Not a bad story just not my story. I feel it’s like another rinse and repeat relationship between the H/h.

I officially worship at the bookshelf of Lex Martin!
The third in the Texas Night series, Breathless is a heartwarming, uplifting romance of friendship, family and love.
We are welcomed back with characters from the first and second books, but even more so we get the story of Joey and Logan.
Logan Carter has always been known as the ladies man of the brothers, and while that is true, no one knows the real him. No one but Joey.
Joey AKA Josephine, his lifelong best friend. A best friend that just returned from a six month trip to Florida. A trip that Logan has hated.
Joey ran away from Logan, to clear her head and to try and get over the man who she has been in love with for as long as she remembers. As if that works, after retuning home, the drama kicks off right away.
The spark that has always been there between these two is finally burning...but will secrets come a calling and drown that spark before it can burn bright.
Join Logan, Joey and the rest of the Carter brood as they navigate family drama and secrets that may just ruin the entire of the family.
This book has it all, romance, friendship, family and vulnerability. Once you start this book you won’t want to put it down, the pages will just call you right back!
⭐️ 4 "Missing Part Of Me" Stars ⭐️ Friends to lovers is a romance trope I always enjoy. There’s just something captivating with watching friends fighting their feelings for each other and ultimately admitting them that is so gorgeous! Breathless was the picture perfect small town, friends to lovers romance. It got me in the feels with the audiobook narration that was so well done!
Logan has always been a player and Joey always had a massive crush on him. Many reasons kept them from admitting their love for each other, never taking their relationship to the next level. When Joey is back in town for a wedding after months away, it’s the perfect opportunity to finally reveal what both their hearts hide. Both were miserable without each others all these months apart and it made them ready to take the plunge into a new type of relationship!
Joey and Logan were just so beautiful together! They were just so sweet with all the flirtatious repartees and teasing. They had me smiling a lot at their perfect connection. This lighter part of their romance was swoon-worthy, but the passionate aspect was absolutely scorching hot!
Breathless was another amazing addition to the Texas Nights Series, where it was pleasant to revisit the characters from the previous novels. The right combo of beautiful, steamy mixed with a little suspense made this novel riveting!
I always knew Logan’s story would be a doozy, but the drama and angst that happened I did not expect. I loved this book! I love childhood friends to lovers romances.
I love when one of the characters have been pining for an eternity for the other person on the DL. Granted, Joey was younger than Logan, but she was always just his best friend. Until that blessed day he saw her in a new light, and as the gorgeous woman she grew to be before his eyes.
“I didn’t even know you were the part of me that was missing.”
The steam factor in this book was scorching. Logan was a dirty bastard, and I love that. He brought out virginal Joey’s naughty side.
“Can my sweet little best friend handle all the ways I want to corrupt her? God forgive me, but I plan to find out.”
So many moments, drama, omg moments, and finally that blessed Hea. I have devoured all three of these books in the Texas Nights trilogy in a week, and I have found a new author that I love!!
Another Lex Martin smash hit! I absolutely fell in love with this author after reading Shameless a few years ago, and she blew me away again with Breathless. She just has a way about sucking you into the world she has created and not letting you go. I love her writing style -- it's fresh and fun and comfy cozy.
Five stars!
“I’ve always loved you. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love you. Do you think you could love me?”
I couldn't get enough of Joey and Logan! They are such an amazing pair with lots of hot chemistry and spice! There's just something about Lex Martin's writing style that makes the sweetness and lightness of her stories shine. And I can always count on her to make my heart melt. The whole gang was also a part of this story and I loved that.
This sweet friends to lovers story will leave you breathless and smiling from ear to ear.
